Yes, this will definitely be my story soon! I’m making the change to move to the Netherlands. I’ve always had a connection with the country, even though I’ve never been there before. I’ve been learning Dutch and the culture for years! Now it’s all up to divine timing! Great video!
Hey, Brittany! Really cool to hear! I'm curious what got you connected with the Netherlands? Glad you enjoyed the video :)
Learning how to swim. About that subject I saw something really touching last week at the beach. A person in the Netherlands whom can't swim is a exception.
There was this foreign guy and he didn't know how to swim, we saw him hesitant at the shoreline, looking around seeing the kids running into the sea without fear. It became clear he wanted to do the same. A couple approached him and they told him that they would learn him to swim. Before you knew it a total of like 5 adults were teaching this foreigner how to swim. It was nice and heartwarming. Society should be like that all the time. Be kind to others and help each other
Wow, this was such a heartwarming story to read. I just imagined seeing this scene myself. Thank you!!
Welkom in Nederland.
Thanks canada big LOVE FROME AMSTERDAM HOLLAND
Thumbs up for learning the language and learning to swim.
Thanks! :)
👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 those last talking points hit!!!
Thank you, bro!!
Hey Sam, as far as I'm concerned you've earned the Dutch passport and dual citizenship 👍
Thank you for becoming an Dutchy 😊
Haha, dankjewel Jan!!
Travelling broadens the mind!
I agree!
Good for you! Now that your getting Dutch organized you’ll have time maybe to also learn the Spanish language. When you’re in the US you’ll be able to converse with them aswell!
Thanks! I actually learned Spanish before Dutch but it's fallen off a bit since moving here.
Good to see you learning the language.. I learned it in my first 2 to 3 years here also. Have you had the chance to meet other expats?
Hey, David! Nice that you've learned as well🙌🏾 I've met a few expats for sure. Where are you from?
@@exploringtheforeign I'm from Connecticut. After leaving college and joining the Air Force I decided to live here. I live in Amersfoort, about 20 minutes from IJburg..
I never thought of speaking another language as having a superpower. Most of us speak English, German and/or French. In the northern part it could be Fresian. Speaking a second or third language is almost as natural as speaking dutch. Not to speak of the languages spoken by differnt groups that live here, like jiddish, marrokkan, turkish , indian (from India) idonesian, polish and ucranian and all the others i didnt list here.
Jolly good Sam !!💕🌷
Vind je de video leuk? :)
Good stuff👍
Thanks, Antonio!
As a person of color, do you experience any difference in the way you were treated back in the US compared to NL?
Funny you ask this because I was just discussing this the other day! Honestly, I haven't felt any sense of racism towards me since moving here and definitely feels like something less prevalent here than what I see in the US. But with that being said, I have heard stories from other expats that live here that feel the opposite, but yeah for me personally, it's something I just haven't really seen.
I'm glad to hear! 🙂👍
feel like a foreigner in amsterdam (and i am dutch myself). Mainly toerist spot for drugs sex alchohol and studies. Any other city would be far better to visit.
I'd like to Know how's the racism over there for a person of colour. I got a job offer n m South African m very scared to take it due to our history of oppression by the Dutch.
First, congrats on the job offer! I can honestly say that I have not been in a position where I felt discriminated against or something. The people here have been very nice and welcoming to me. I'll definitely touch on this in more detail soon in a video :)
Ohhh thank you so much for your reply. Highly appreciated 🤗🤗
Learning to swim is wise, yearly a good number of foreigners drown
Yeah, I've heard a lot about that, that's quite sad. I'm glad I feel more confident in the water!
In Amsterdam only the building and the passports are Dutch. For the legals: They use Dutch as a common language. You want Dutch life you need to get out of the Randstad.
You have no idea how important that swimming part is. Every summer there's tragic stories on the news about somebody who drowned somewhere and they're usually here on holiday or moved from another country and just never learned to swim. Such a vital life skill that really should be universally taught...
Yeah, I've heard a bit about those stories. Really sad!
but remember one thing, don't think you can beat the sea now that you can swim.
And don't go farther than waist high into the sea. The North Sea is treacherous, even when it looks calm. We want you to stay alive and living here.
Bro dont go into water of which you cant see the bottom.
@@petervanderkruk8346 Isn't that a bit exaggerated? One can swim in the sea. Just need to pay attention to warnings and if there are certain currents or tides that seem to pull you in. I swam in the sea a lot this year, I never go too far but definitely to a point that I can't stand on my feet anymore.
Wow, all the changes you’ve realized are because of your open mindedness, kudos for you for learning the language, Dutch isn’t easy for English native speakers, I guess because of adapting to our culture and way of life you’ve become a true asset to our society, dus een groot compliment waard, kanjer!!
Wow, thanks, Robert!! Appreciate the words.
True asset to our society indeed
You learning the language is brilliant. I'm regurarly in meetings where six Dutch people have to speak English, because of the one member from the USA who lives here for seven years, studied at Dutch university and still doesn't speak Dutch. We all speak English quite well, but after a long day at work, when you're tired, it's getting more difficult...
Thanks, Casper! I could imagine from your perspective how tiring it may be at times.
I would hold the meetings in Dutch, give them 3 months warning and that’s it! I’m Dutch and had to learn English when I married an English guy in the 70’s
Do you have any learning pointers for those who would like to learn?
The guy on the bike lol
Proud of you for learning how to swim and learning to slow down and enjoy life.
YOU INSPIRE ME SO MUCH!
Haha, he was hilarious, right? I noticed him when I was editing.
I appreciate you, cousin!!
@@exploringtheforeign Camera happy delivery boy...
I laughed so hard when he said i cant swim.
I am a dutch guy so yes i learned when i was 4 something like that. I didn't know it was here so importend like i was thinking i was arround the world and the transformation what he had in swimming is so cool🤩
@@justvibeandplay5648 I had my first swimming lessons in second grade of elementary school. In an open air swimming area of a lake. When an indoor swimming pool opened a year later, we all got our A, B and C swim certificate in school sports. Very funny because at the same lesson hour, military got their lessons too. Crying young men afraid of the water! Hilarious! But already almost sixty years ago...
When I was young I thought that swimming lessons were a basic part of almost every young childs education in every country in the world. I was really shocked when I found out this wasn't true 😅
interesting!
As a Dutchman who has now lived in the States for 46 years I enjoy your intelligent conversation style. Keep growing and exploring the world and its peoples and you'll look back on a life well lived. I did!
I just moved over to the Netherlands and I gotta say, I love your videos. They are not the usual reviews, opinions or advice that you see. Gives some really good insight into the things you have learnt personally which can be relatable to a lot of people. I really like your style too, you always give me a chuckle with some of the comments and transitions. I am hoping to be proficient in Dutch very soon! It is at the top of my list
Really really appreciate this, Amit! Thank you! My vibe when making a video is just to be authentic and speak from my reality, so it's really cool to read this feedback. And I have no doubts you'll pick up Dutch; just force yourself to speak with people, be confident in whatever you know, even if it's just one sentence you know, master that one sentence and eventually it'll keep building up more and more :)
Exactly what I like so much in the Netherlands is meeting all these different cultures. I’m married to a Surinamese but my whole youth I spend my time making music with Indonesian and Molukkan friends. It was so much fun because they’re Dutch but still maintaining there own habits, music and food culture. If you have the chance, visit a pasar malam (evening market). Very warm and welcoming people, with interesting stories to tell. And yeah, swimming is so natural for us we have no idea it’s not common practice in all parts of the world. Great you picked up on that.
That's awesome to hear! You seem like a very welcoming and open person so I could understand how you got to meet all of these different people! And yeah, swimming was one of the first things that stood out to me when thinking about this video haha.
@@exploringtheforeign Actually I’m pretty much an introvert but I was fortunate that my parents used to attend a church with a lot of Indonesian people and right away they felt like family and we share a passion for music so I totally submerged in their culture and music. That’s many years ago and the elderly Mollukans told me firsthand there story how they where forced to relocate to the Netherlands, very interesting history they find out about. But you already experienced the Surinamese culture a bit and how easy it is to make friends, if you’re open to it. Like you said, live to short to not explore new things.
@@hunchbackaudio Interesting! I learned a little bit about the Moluccans last year and the unfortunate history they have with the Dutch. It was my first time hearing about them! By the way, where do you recommend to go for a night market?
@@exploringtheforeign Yeah that's a whole story in itself and most of the first generation is no longer with us. But their children will be happy to tell you about it. Most Indonesians are situated around Den Haag, if you're looking closer to Amsterdam, you can find a big population Moluccans and Indo's in Huizen (NH). But Pasar Malams are held all over the country, I would try to find a bigger one. Their most famous band is called Moluccan Moods, if you can find one where they play your good. And then the food, that's a whole world in itself to discover, but you'll see.
Awesome! As always, thank you for the suggestions :)
I love the positive energy that you are showing in your video. You seem like the kind of person that lift other people up. I enjoy your videos and it is nice to see the country i was born in from a different set of eyes.
Huge thanks for this comment, means a lot! And I'm glad you find it entertaining to see the Netherlands from this American's perspective :)

you look like european metrosexual with your purse since u been in that country
You should come over to the south once to the province of Limburg, you thought the big city's were multicultural you haven't seen anything yet.
About the work effort here in the Netherlands i think u missed a critical point.
We know and firmly believe that being healthy yourself in body and soul, is the only way to endure a life of hard work.
This gives us in the long run much more healthy citizens who can work longer harder, without the high rate of mental or physical problems along the way.
But i think the biggest thing here in the Netherlands is our gouvernement, at least in the past we always had a business like cabinet who ruled the country as a company.
We rather have a ruthless businessman in charge looking at every cent spend, then a politician giving out gifts.
Great video keep it going.
Dude when we film I have so much to share and you can bring me up to speed on whiskeys because I smoke plants normally not drink anything more than my hefe weis or a Dutch liquer from.time to time
Which your attitude,to me,you're more as welcome. You're learning Dutch, that's a PRO to start with. But also learning from different attitudes and culture around you,is a great thing.Go on likes this Bro.
thank you, Jochem!
Oh man… I need to definitely learn Dutch! Man.. I can’t believe you picked it up so fast!
Haha, you can do it, Sky!!
It can't be more of a compliment to see someone flourish while being in completely different surroundings, let alone as an expat. You've invested in living here and it looks as if you're succeeding.
Absolutely love it!
Man, much appreciated, Ruben! Thank you for this

yeah, whenever I watch the video back I wonder if they were tryna scare me or something haha
Massive respect for learning the language and for sharing your "struggles' with swimming and growth as a person!
I appreciate that, for real!
Another great video nephew! Wow, I did not know you couldn't swim. CONGRATULATIONS!!! That's cool you've set your mind on accomplishing to learn. That first step is always the biggest. And when you keep going you want to do more!
It's nothing wrong being spontaneous😆I think the whole family has that vibe, it's not your fault!!
It's true, life is too short! Enjoy every moment!
Oh yeah, and the guy😆 on the bike.. he made a complete U-turn to show some love.
But, I was worried about that red car that passed by a little too fast!😧
Thank you, Auntie!! Haha yeah, swimming was never in my toolbox, but I got it now haha. And the fam definitely has the spontaneous vibe, so I know where I get it from!
And don't worry, I was safe :) haha, thanks for watching, Auntie!

I hope you cycle on your bike too, bc that's mandatory in NL. For the rest...goed bezig👍👍

Mandatory? Really?
@@jasonwright9405 to turn into a real Dutch man.
Not to get all philosophical on 'ya 🙂but that must be such a great feeling that you're in a place that allows you to grow. It's not even about comparing to where you grew up, it's about being in a place that 'feels right' and that seems to have released something in you that's a bit hard to put into words. Hey, when it's working you know it. Look forward to hearing more about your journey.
You're 100% right, Peter! It is a great feeling. Thank you for joining the journey!
Finally you can forget imperial and joined the logic wonders off the metric world.
lol
Just moved to Belgium, How long did it take you to learn Dutch ? Would appreciate a video or some insight on free tools or things that helped you get to where you're at now with the language.
Hey awesome! How's it going so far there?
As for learning Dutch, so just to be clear, I'm not fluent haha, but I'm at a level where I'm comfortable with having 80% of conversations and can understand about 80% of things I hear. I'd say getting around this level took roughly 5-6 months. And to the way I got there was consuming as much stuff in Dutch as possible, reading the news in Dutch, only using Dutch when doing every day tasks like grocery shopping or ordering food, watching a lot of TV in Dutch, etc. And the key is to just be confident in whatever you learn/know. We're not native speakers, so no point in being scared of making mistakes :) just go out and try and through repetition of all of the things mentioned above, you'll find yourself speaking in no time!
I guess the issue here is that in much of the Dutch speaking part, they speak the Flemish dialect of Dutch, which in some cases leads to question marks when I hear it. Or rather a big fat "Huh?" So learning Dutch will get you there eventually, but it is part of the journey.
I can recommend Duo Lingo. Their method is very methodical and clever and will get you on the way. Trying to find Dutch spoken documentaries with subtitles and listening to it will train your ears.
indeed ... don't worry about making mistakes. ask people to correct your mistakes or to explain, and refuse to switch to english because that's what most flemish and dutch people will do immediately, but you won't learn anything that way.
Excellent work my friend 👏 new friend here 👍 Thank you very much for sharing 😊 keep rocking ✌
Thanks!
Yeah, work is just work and work is there to finance your free time and the est of your life. While you're at it, you may just as well get the most out of it, and no I was not referring to money ;-)
Having an excellent time at work without any work related stress is the goal to achieve.
We tend to make life worth wile, even at work. It not about having or earning much, more, most, in money that is. It's much more having and earning much, more, most quality in life, friends, a fantastic partner (this will take some effort from both sides!), happiness in general. In the end it's like this: who cares about money, if you can have friends in stead? I mean a little money is convenient of course, but not over the top. Nobody needs money over the top, ever! Over the top money usually comes together with fake friends, fake relationships, fake Castle houses, well a lot of fake basically. It's like living in the lie. In Dutch it's like this: Beter 1 vogel in de hand, dan 10 in de lucht. It's better to put your extra time in a partner and friends than in work.
Great words, Dutchy J!
What a beautiful City it is being Dutch and after 40 years in L.A. just moved back to Amsterdam omg what a difference to the quality of life i did not realize as was excited to live and work in L.A. as a great experience but yeah 40 years omg. Happy i returned not sure i would appreciate it as much if i stayed in Amsterdam as now.
3:04 When someone sits that close to a canal, you just know he can swim 😄 Well done; now the beaches are more fun too.
Haha, dankjewel! Yeah, I look forward to doing some open water swimming :)
glad to see a typical Dutch idiot making a classic fool of himself 4:33 ... :P
Thank you for making the the effort to learn our language.
Enjoy your stay .Maybe forever?
Living close to a canal AND drinking whiskey make learning how to swim a wise decision.
but at sea or rivers can be dangerous for even experienced swimmers!
Just a little warning.
I live near coast almost on the beach , every year several people drown over here , but they are never dutch, swimmig is important

They don't learn to swim in primary school???? Weird.... You learn to bike and swim at age 3 or 4 here, and skate, if there is ice...

But if you live in Amsterdam, do you really live in the Netherlands? Some would say no
Yeah, I don't agree with Amsterdam being seen as separate from the rest of the Netherlands. The touristy part, sure, but I feel the rest of the city is just like another Dutch city.
I'm trying to move to the Netherlands in 2023 - I'm really glad I found your channel

as a Canadian, im really surprised the USA doesn't have much for swimming classes. All through school I had swimming classers. Never thought of the difference, but it makes sense because Canada has the most amount of lakes in the world. As Canada has a whopping 2 million lakes, I guess swimming is a necessity
Yeah, it's not as common there as people would think aha. But there are still a lot of Americans that do lessons and also some high schools that require it as a class.
Please stay spontaneous as well 😀
Will do, Maria!

What a wild assumption. He's on the job you can't do that high. He is just waving at a camera.
Its important to respect time, but only in the Netherlands is the clock so important (i think 🤔)
heel belangrijk hier haha
learn the politics and see what u think about us then let me know
Sounds like a plan!
You're a good person m8!
But how do you look at the state of the government?
Appreciate you saying that! If I'm being honest, Dutch politics compared to the US is so much more lowkey, I feel like I need to really dig around to see what's going on, whereas in the US it's constantly in your face.
With that being said, I've heard of a few scandals in the government since I moved here, but overall, the government in my opinion seems to be organized and also quite transparent relative to what I'm used to back home. But based on a lot of comments I get, I see that the Dutch may have a different perspective.

Netherlands is not only Amsterdam. Amsterdam is not the that it was i go never there. Before 2000 was it better. Now there are to many toerist. But Netherlands is not only Amsterdam is a chit cyti today.
Well said, haha
I was there before 2000 absolutely great, you’ll missed something and good rave, festivals just everything.
Have you adapted in using the metric system when measuring distances, or when weighing groceries, or when you want to know what the temperature is? Or do you find your self going back and forth and converting to the US Customary System?
Where the hell where you at when we all learned how to swim cuzzo, smh.
😂😂😂 you guys left me behind, fam!
The last point is probably due to the difference in European and American work culture. All Europeans get paid vacation, we also have as many paid sick days as we need, parental leave is long and for both parents and a full time job is per definition 40 hours a week. In America the employer gets to decide all of the above, naturally a comoany tries to maximize profits by providing as little service as possible...
Best thing about Amsterdam: Antwerp is nearby! My favorite city in Europe!
I respect your grind and I appreciate your enthusiasm for learning the language. Whenever I meet expats, I automatically change to speaking English so that I can make it easier for them but does that help at all?
Heel erg bedankt! As for the switching to English, I understand the natural desire to want to do that if you see someone struggling with Dutch or not speaking at the same level that you speak English, but if Dutch people do that, I also don't think it'd be valid for them to be upset that no one speaks Dutch haha. For myself, I'm very aware to be stubborn with speaking back in Dutch, but I know most people don't feel comfortable going back to Dutch after a Dutch person responds in English.
Wonderfull that you took the time to learn the Dutch way of living. Now I am curious , have you only learned the Dutch way of living in the big city in the western part of the country or have you tried another part of the Netherlands as well to see how their Dutch way of living is ? Each part of the Netherlands is so different , socially, interests, language (dialects ) pace of life. Could be interesting for you to find that out. Here in the Eastern part of the Netherlands specially in the small villages it is very normal for everybody to greet each other and it doesn’t matter if you are familiar to us or not. Spread your wings and find out how beautiful and interesting the rest of the Netherlands is. 😃 loved the video 🫶🏻❤️
