In fact, growing up isn't all that bad. You get to enjoy things more because you do it for yourself. You cannot afford this as a teenager. Let me give you an example. The usual cooking in childhood is simply unnecessary. Your parents do everything for you. But having matured, cooking becomes something chill and useful, since it is done for yourself, which is very cool I guess. Sorry for my not that good English please. I was using the translater smtms xd
Jamie hugging Ryan is actually my favorite part of the song. Like she was trying to protect her kids because she knew Ryan was on a bad track but she had all the faith in him knowing he was going to rehab for Dave and his family.
I really liked this story though, Dave was a real friend to Ryan, helping him out of the rut he got himself in. Like no joke I cried a little when Dave dropped him off at the clinic to help Ryan get over his addiction.
^ I believe they were just saying "I cried a little" as hyperbole for emphasis.. Do you also call bullshit ("bollocks" whatever Brit :p) when something really funny happens and somebody says "lol I died"? Or like if something is particularly cringe and someone says it gave em cancer?...
One small detail I think I noticed: At the end (about 3:17) Ryan is skating on a skateboard while Dave is on a longboard. Skateboards are smaller, faster, and harder to control (crazier if you will) while longboards are bigger, slower, but very easy to control (well-mannered if you will). These match Ryan and Dave's personalities, with Ryan being the crazier more rowdy one, and Dave being the quieter more reserved one.
I'm a mix of those two. A quiet, reserved person on the outside, but a rowdy person on the inside; being polite under normal circumstances, but aggressive and snappy when triggered.
Since to me they look about the same in size I would guess they are both skateboards, but the distinction here i believe is that Ryan seems to not have grip tape on his board an intentional choice that makes skating much more dangerous while Dave has grip tape. I think this shows that Ryan makes intentionally dangerous decisions that can go badly easily and are hard to get out of i.e. him doing drugs or seeming to yell at someone near the beginning intentionally dangerous decisions that easily could have and are shown to have gone bad and that he is struggling getting out of.
Not only did Dave help Ryan get a place to stay, but he stayed by his side to make sure he did go get detoxed. That's a true friend. I really love that even his wife cared about Ryan and wanted him to get help as well, bidding him goodbye. You tend not to hear good stories where past friends end up helping each other to the end, especially if one ends up on drugs and needs help getting clean. This is heartwarming and I was scared and expected something bad to happen at the end. But it ended well. I love these story driven songs. Always will love you Rare Americans.
@Ban this youtube to put this on an open site, you are brave, I don't know what your name is or who you are, or anything about you, but that fact that you are a real good person to your bro, and probs not even just him is grand. I hope you have a great life... In a GOOD way. Also hope your day will be a little better reading this.
Honestly this song relates to me too much really makes me think, but I’m the worst type of person so I’ll want to do something but won’t do anything to fix it.
I know this sounds really stereotypical, but this song literally helped me through my fetanyl detox. The most painful experience of my life. Just the realization that I’m not alone meant so so much to me.
No, I don’t think they are dark. They are a story arc, about a man who needed help from family to make that step to a better life. Because of his friend, he’s getting the help he needs, and has a second chance.
2:36 This scene is actually heartwarming. I like the idea that Jamie was the same girl under Dave's arm in the beginning and also watched as her friend slowly got worse and worse. She eventually stopped communication with him since she didn't want that influence on her children. But when push came to shove she still really does care for her friend and husband's cousin. She wants him to get better and have him in her family's life. Just a theory tho
Everyone else is human, so i think its just to make the 2 more distinct, though it carries over to the kids to make it apparent theyre HIS kids, not that hes a stepdad or something.
My old friend I’ve stayed in touch with since middle school has been through some rough patches and hung out around the wrong crowds, he finally got his shit together recently and got a job that pays really well and he came back in town recently to chill at my house. I’m incredibly proud of him and who he’s become.
"My old friend" and "he finally got his shit together" where tf were YOU, as a 'friend'? cuz theres friends and theres 'friends that don't wanna deal with that junkie' and as an ex-addict myself....hmmmm glad he was able to do it without any of your support you could've gave.
In Dave's situation rn. My lil bro is strugglin with a lot but i wanna help the poor bastard straighten out. Respect to the Daves helping out a pal get over addiction. Respect to the Ryans trying to fight those demons and get sober.
i wish the two of you, especially your brother, the best of luck. im in a similar situation and seeing people in pain with stuff like addiction really makes my heart ache.
@@emilycoombs4727 Thank you, I wish you luck too man, it's a difficult battle but I'm glad some have friends and close family helping them through it. I wish others were just as lucky
The first time I listened to this song I got kind of emotional. This is my, what 20th time and still hits me. Then I read the comments and I have tears welling up. I'm not in the same boat (maybe similar but mostly not) and my heart goes out to all the Ryans and Daves out there. I have seen substance abuse hurt people and I glad there are the Dave's that care and the Ryan's want help. No matter who you are in the comment thread I wish you all the best and hope everyone pulls through. Best of luck everyone. My heart aches and goes out to all of you.
@@rocknmetalultima It's such a great song, I love how unique the band's music is, and the way they find the perfect words and visuals for their songs, and their fans seem real supportive and kind, I love what Rare Americans is doing with their music, it's amazing- It makes it so much more emotional knowing others are going through similar situations, and even if they aren't, they're still so supportive :)
This is just like my friend helping me with my alcoholism. I always lived with my mom and just recently moved in with this dude and although there's been plenty of people who've tried to help, he's the first one to really yell at, scold, and sometimes force me to do the right thing. I'm still having trouble but I'm slowly cutting down on the drinking and although life still throws plenty of bullshit at me, i still feel proud because I'm finally making an effort. This song hits close to home and i love it.
I love the hug at 2:30. There are genuinely so many people who live in the streets or are addicted who long so intensely to just feel the comfort of another person treating them human. It’s so very real. There are a lot of studies demonstrating that the best tool for overcoming addiction isn’t medical or therapeutic, it’s just having people around you who understand and love you, many addicts will attest to the fact that their love for their friends and family is what motivated them to stick with the program. In the occasion that people do relapse, it tends to be from chemical addiction-or, because they suffer a great loss or change in their social circle.

I like how rare Americans has anthro animals as the main characters to have them stick out from the rest. But notice how the children are dogs too? This could imply they will grow up the same and have the same bond as these cousins. Just a theory
I have that one friend since high school - he was with me during my ups and downs, saved me from my suicide attempt and never stopped supporting me. Really wise, hard working and best friend I ever had. People come and go, but he is always there for me since about 20 years. Take care of your best friends, they are worth it.

We're all a little Ryan, we're all a little Dave. Dont put yourself in a little box to waste your precious days. Sometimes you're your only friend but if you've got someone else, be each other's Dave, be each other's Ryan.
This song’s really helped me put beating an addiction into perspective. It’s not quite as comparable, but, I’ve quit smoking. I’m almost a full year in and I was even able to beat “six-month backslide” without returning to the habit. Thanks to RA for writing songs that keep it real.
My parents and most of my siblings are all smokers, so while it's not first hand experience, I know how hard it is to get out of that cycle. Well done, and even though it means little, coming from a stranger like me, I'm proud of you man! Keep it up, it's gonna be worth it!
The thing that makes me laugh is when The Wolf is on the phone he puts the phone to his “ear” but it’s on his right temple and his ear is on the top of his head.
Want to know why? Its cuz if they put it to there ear, since there ears are so damn good if the phones where up to there ears it would hurt them. Makes sense, right?

It's probably because people dislike it because its furries. Rightfullly so, furries do weird shit, a lot of it and it's not smart to associate yourself with it.
I know that if i had found this song years ago when my english was poor, id enjoy the music. But now that im older and have good english, i can barely keep tears back every time i hear it. Gives me the power to keep going, keep getting better.
I love how every song has a story like how in cats dogs and rats shows how bad prison is and how messed up the justice system is ( at least that’s how I interpret it). In brittle bones Nicky it talks about how child abuse and bullying can change a person. And Ryan and Dave shows what drugs can do to harm someone and their life’s and friendships.

Who else wants a sequel of Ryan and dave? I honestly think it'd be cool if there was another music vid of Ryan coming out of detox and turning his life around like it's his teenage years again
I’m not an adict but this shows me to trust the resources and well known people around you because they only want you to get better and be the best person you can.
It’s kinda weird to know that when Ryan is recovering from his addiction Nicky is making his first real friend Ben, Since we saw him selling drugs to Ryan and recording takes at least a few years I’m guessing

I love how there are different symbols in the music video. For one the art is amazing, but besides that, the one cousin, a pug bull dog mix maybe, has his life together, and it’s easy for him, because he gives off the look of domestication. While as the other cousin is more wild and wolf like, just like his looks. It’s also cool about the colors, you can’t tell if the wolf is high because his eyes are always red, and you’d think that red and green, the colors that each brother are, would not wrk out in the end and would clash, but they pushed through together. Overall I love his video and can’t wait for more!!!
Adding onto the color metaphor, near the end you can see that Dave is wearing a red hat (Ryan's color) and Ryan is carrying a green bag (Dave's color). It goes to show that they really aren't that different, and that they're looking out for each other through it all.
@@carbonatedboard2233 Hmm, maybe they did a sequel to brittle bones nicky cuz it was one of the most popular songs on this channel? I mean Ryan and Dave IS popular but. idk man, we probably would tho

This song has really made me appreciate this band. Before i just liked it for the jaunty tunes but the story and message in this one is just perfect. Great job
I'm just hoping that in another universe this happened to my late sister and she got help. She deserved the world, she could've traveled to every part of it, just like she wanted, but drugs stole the opportunity from her. She tried rehab many times too, but always gave up. I hope that everyone who needs it will get help before it's too late. Stay strong ❤
My best friend is going on almost a year sobriety. She says I've been there alot for her, I'd like to think so. I've seen her at her best and at her worst. I'm just really happy that she is staying strong, and i know she feels happier too.
Best thing you can do is be supportive it's great to hear they're staying sober just keep in mind though if they do backslide stay supportive don't make them feel bad about it because mistakes happen
man this song was so sad yet happy due the the memory they had together when they were teenagers and now ryans is a broken lil wolf. i just loved this animation so much and the song ofc. 10/10
I like at 1:50 when Ryan's pupils are really big and don't show the whites of his eyes very much (like regular dogs) except the small bit of white eye is like when real dogs get scared or sad, you can see the whites of their eyes better.
Idk if you will ever read this, but this song has helped me handle my best friend/soul brother addiction w a gentle approach. I showed him this video when talking about how I felt and it stuck w him. He is now working on going sober, it hasn't been easy, I had to put boundaries, I had to learn to say no to him, but I also supported him w his therapy, accompany him to his monthly group meeting so he didn't felt so alone and also went to help him clean his room. I had hear a lot of songs that talks about handling a loving one when they are struggling w addiction, but yours is the one that feels like it comes from a place or love and care and that means the world to me. As a detail, I love how Jamey hugs Ryan before he goes to rehab, she knows Dave loves Ryan and want to help him, so even if she is wary bc she has kids, she doesn't see Ryan as lesser for struggling w addiction. I know it seems like a minor detail, but it seriously opened my eyes the first time I listened to your song. Thank you, Rare Americans 🖤🖤
I fucking love this song, reminds me so much of me and my cousin, where im Dave and he is Ryan, and boy did we go through this too. This song brought back a lot of hard memories and good times, keep it up guys. Love your music
Seeing so much of myself in Ryan hurts, but thankful to be sober. Incredible song and video - can't believe my furry ass didn't see this sooner. Thanks for making it.
My Favorite lyrics is: "Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time, Its time." 3:05 or the others.
My dad, his dad, and his dad’s dad all struggled with addiction. I’m planning on being the first in decades (my dad is clean now as well) to break the cycle which is why I’ve never drank, smoked, or done any drugs. I’m nearly 22 and still holding fast. I love this song because it’s a good reminder
i can hard relate to this, most of family on both sides are/were addicted to something whether it be cigarettes, weed, alcohol, drugs, etc i have a cousin whose two weeks older than me already starting to get into that cycle which makes me want to stay away even more i wish you luck!
“I look back at my truck and my only real friend” is a line that really puts in perspective ryans life. He knew the people around him were a bad influence and Dave is the only one he could actually trust. Which really makes me question the people I find that are my friends
This reminded me of when SomethingElseYT (in his mama seeks video) goes “what the frick brain stop it” and the brain press a button (or flicks a lever) and Adam falls over and was like “BAUVODHA”
Oh my gosh this is exactly me and my cousins story, were still young adults and he hasn’t recovered yet, but I will always be there to help him from his addiction
This was the story of me and my brother. He came out of recovery but he didn't make it. Make sure to keep a close eye on your cousin. I still really miss him. October 9th is gonna be a year.... fly high Dylan, I'm sure I'll see you soon

That's really good to have friends to do that for you
I'm so proud of you. Hugs from this internet stranger

We dont see it that way, furries are discusting beings that need eradication. This is an inoccent animation that uses animals
Such a cool metaphor
Adding onto the color metaphor, near the end you can see that Dave is wearing a red hat (Ryan's color) and Ryan is carrying a green bag (Dave's color). It goes to show that they really aren't that different, and that they're looking out for each other through it all.
Red and green are complementary colors. Opposite each other on the color wheel, but work well for showing contrast when paired.
Even tho red and green are opposite colors they look good together because they bring out each other

This song has really made me appreciate this band. Before i just liked it for the jaunty tunes but the story and message in this one is just perfect. Great job
As a recovering addict thank you for this. It seems this video has helped a lot of people help themselves.
Dude I’m definitely doing fanart for this. I like the animation more on cats dogs and rats but I’m happy your employing animators. A really good story

Why not with your homies around ?

Right
I’m waiting until quarantine is over so I can listen to this with the homies

It actually makes a lot of sense for Ryan to be a wolf, he’s wild and Dave’s a domesticated pug, but with help he was able to calm himself
Brittle bones Nicky has made me love your songs. More
Agree
Everyone needs a Dave.
And everyone needs to help someone like Ryan.
Damn I really did have a friend in this lifestyle, lost him due to overdose, this video puts my faith into humanity!! (Also really Catchy:)
Sorry to hear that man
Me and my friend are like this, he isn’t going the better route and I’m trying to keep him from doing it
Waffle Life well hopefully he gets the help he needs and deserves. Nobody deserves to go through something like that. Ever
Seeing so much of myself in Ryan hurts, but thankful to be sober. Incredible song and video - can't believe my furry ass didn't see this sooner. Thanks for making it.
My Favorite lyrics is:
"Its time, Its time, Its time,
Its time, Its time, Its time,
Its time, Its time, Its time,
Its time, Its time, Its time."

That's so awesome, I'm proud of you!!
i can hard relate to this, most of family on both sides are/were addicted to something whether it be cigarettes, weed, alcohol, drugs, etc
i have a cousin whose two weeks older than me already starting to get into that cycle which makes me want to stay away even more
i wish you luck!
Ur ballin bro
I hope thats true
Wouldn't mind watching a tv show about these two.
It would be a really deep show with a lot of meaning I would love it
Well, theres Bojack Horseman
I'd watch it for sure.
Same
This video, Brittle Bones Nicky, and any other of their animated music videos would make a good anthology series.
“I look back at my truck and my only real friend” is a line that really puts in perspective ryans life. He knew the people around him were a bad influence and Dave is the only one he could actually trust. Which really makes me question the people I find that are my friends
“Difference is Dave has an off switch, and Ryan doesn’t”
Yeah they don’t need an off switch because...
*just unflick the on switch*
No use reverse card

Oh my gosh this is exactly me and my cousins story, were still young adults and he hasn’t recovered yet, but I will always be there to help him from his addiction
This was the story of me and my brother. He came out of recovery but he didn't make it. Make sure to keep a close eye on your cousin. I still really miss him. October 9th is gonna be a year.... fly high Dylan, I'm sure I'll see you soon
