I just read that Texas, and some other areas in USA are adding “facility fee” to hospital invoices- not covered by insurance. $200-400 just for walking in the building! Please check your area and be ready.

They do that at doc offices here. My dad calls it a "greeter's fee," as he has to check in at the floor's front desk before checking in at the doc's front desk. Crazy. Medicare covers it, but I'm sure many private insurers don't.

My brother and I share one car. The last car we bought was only $5,000. There is still about $3,000 left on the loan. Not much for insurance and we share the cost of gasoline. Though it is 15 years old, there are very few miles on it......and we don't do much driving.
I like what Dave Ramsey teaches: buy a used car, never a new car. I was thankful that God provided what we needed.
    Amen and Amen 🙌.

I wanted a car 5yrs old or younger. I compared the prices and there was a $1,000-$3,000 difference between them and new, in 2018, I got a new 2019 for $18,500. So far, just normal maintenance and about 40,000 miles. I’m hoping to get another 9-15yrs from it. I probably won’t be around for the 15 but who knows.

We are not near a bus line so that doesn't work. Much too far for walking and too much traffic, no sidewalks.
We own older cars. We don't share a car as our schedules and part time jobs are in different areas and directions. Other appointments like doctors are not in the same area.I don't want to do Uber and there is not much taxi service. Keeping our cars in good repair is best. No family nearby for rides or to share a vehicle. At least for now. Later as we are older things might change.

I retired 3 years ago and move from a suburb of Cleveland Ohio to Western Illinois, No more stressful 4 to 6 hour commute to my job I had everyday back home. My wife is originally from this town of 15,000 people in Illinois and even though I always said I would not ever leave Ohio I also said I would never move here to Illinois she did say over the years that she missed her hometown and didn't like the city so she was very happy to move back to her hometown. I did my research and this town actually being a couple hundred miles from Chicago everything is much cheaper here. We have a university here, free bus service and a free shuttle bus for seniors that will take you anywhere in town that makes it nice because they pick up up at your house and take you anywhere, say you want to go to Walmart they will help you put your stuff in the shuttle bus and take you back home. I could also walk I'm no more than a mile from Walmart,Aldi and any of the other stores. I also live about 8 blocks from a Amtrak station that has 4 trains a day. I also plan on getting an e-bike. And being in the Midwest housing is really cheap here My house only cost 60k the same house would cost 250k + back in Ohio. So if your retired and not tied down to one place consider moving but do your research. Also where I live now there is no state or city taxes on any retirement income. Also my car plate sticker for last year was $10.00 because I was over 65 and qualified I don't think I've could of done better for myself and my wife. Also go and spend a little time where you think you might want to live before you move my first night here I had to go to the store and get a couple of night lights because it's so dark here and it's so quiet here at first it bothered me. I would also add I really really miss Ohio but it's so cheap here I have no stress.

I have friends who have moved to retirement communities where the community has a bus that takes them to mall or supermarket on a weekly schedule, drops them off and picks them all up at a designated time (hour or two later) The driver helps them with parcels they might have purchased. This same bus takes them on excursions that they might choose and they are able to make suggestions of places they would like to visit and if enough of the residents want to go they arrange it. ll included within their rent.

One of the reasons we decided to move from our area (we rent) is lack of public transportation. Husband takes the car to work and our children are at the age where they can walk to public parks and use the bus by themselves. It is also closer to hubby's work to save on gas.

You mentioned getting a ride with a friend and it gave me an idea. What about a neighbor or neighborhood group where if someone in the group is running an errand, check with others to see if anyone needs anything from the same location. Logistically this could get cumbersome, but if it’s a small group of trust a few people who are agreeable, it could save each of you the time of actually going yourself with someone plus the added savings of gas/car expense. You could likewise rotate who runs the errand (if possible) or do something nice for one another in exchange or offer to help the other in another way by taking their dog for a walk, watering their plants if they’re away, baking something you know they like, etc.

Thanks for all the good ideas about how to get by w/o your own vehicle. I used to work retail at a place off our county transit route. Had a car wreck and my car was totaled. Left without transportation for about a month and had no desire to impose or be a bother thus used Uber and Lyft to go to and fro. It is very cost prohibitive for a low wage part-time employee. I essentially worked to make almost zero dollars or maybe worse, lost money for that month or so, and basically just showed up to keep the job. Do research on fares for the ride services because they can vary wildly and that is if you can even book a ride when you need one.
As for tips, one (now ex-) co-worker, who had no transportation of their own just took it for granted that whomever closed up with them at night would always take them home. That's a huge part of the reason I don't work there anymore. One night I refused so mgmt decided to write me up for leaving that (adult) person behind in the parking lot at night. Not gonna work anywhere that extorts employees.

You have to consolidate your needs for transportation try to do everything in 1 or 2 trips with places close together, Make sure you schedule things when these alternatives are available. One more thing if you have an appointment find out if it can be done virtually (Over the phone or Video call) Eliminating the need for transportation in certain circumstances save money too. I am 85% convinced that between all the shopping available online& services that are mobile I think I could pretty much become a recluse. I've been thinking 🤔 lets pretend I do not have my own transportation - how many successive days can I stay home and still have my needs met? Andi recently discovered in my tiny hometown there is a small grocery that will take phone orders & deliver them ! I'm excited about that since many seniors are not comfortable using an APP& paying online!

Another guy picked up packages for Amazon on his way home as a contract driver. Once again it covered his commuting expenses and as a small business provided tax deductions.

@@kenyonbissett3512 my mum used to drive us to school, my brother and I. Soon she had other parents( neighbours) asking if she could give their kids a ride and they insisted on paying her. This became an additional source of income for her back in the 80s.

My sister-in-law used someone from her church to take her to her doctor's appointments. She charged $10 an hour and stayed in the waiting room and helped her to the car. She felt more comfortable doing that rather than Uber.

I only have vision in one eye and the DMV is really picky about drivers being able to see BOTH sides of the road, 😅so no license for me. I use an e-trike (3-wheel electric bicycle) with a small tow trailer. I can get everywhere I need to go and take my guide dog Charlie with me (and my dry cleaning and purchases home). For anything larger (furniture shopping, picking up a tree at the local nursery, etc.) I hire kids from the local junior college which is a lot cheaper than Uber in my area and they help me when Uber won't do (you can't take your dog to the vet in an Uber, for instance). It works out for me

Great video! Every once in a while I will see someone on the road on their e bike. Honestly it looks so dangerous. I'm sure the risk of injury or fatality is higher unfortunately because drivers of cars are not used to watching for them, just like bicyclists. There's nothing to protect them if they fly off, the way there is with a car. Plus I'm sure it's tempting for them to weave in and out of traffic putting themselves at greater risk.

great content, good information for seniors who might be at the stage of not being able to or wanting to drive anymore. Sometimes a neighbor or theit
children are happy to make a little extra money driving people to their appointments and errands, my friend use to do that for a living, drive people to the stores/doctors/shopping malls, before lyft and uber came along, she did very well. Our town also has free transportation for seniors, shuttle bus/handicap van, and the local taxi service gives a senior citizen discount along with discounted bus and lite rail tickets, it helps.

My sister’s husband passed recently & my husband passed 3 yrs ago so I moved from out of state back to TX & in with my sister. We each have paid off older cars that are in good shape. We have other means of friends & family who’ll drive us but if sis or me drive ourselves we only go to, Dr’s appts, few grocery stores, CVS & Walmart. We do go out to eat now & then but we stay in our area of town > many choices of restaurants/stores. Rode buses lots in my younger years but don’t think I’d feel safe on bus nowadays. 😬😬🫨 If I fly I use Uber to take me to airport since 2021. Not subjecting my family or friends to Dallas airport traffic ever again cause it’s getting SO HECTIC!!
