I live in South Carolina. On one of our hot days a few weeks ago, my compressor on my HVAC unit died. I called my repairman who has always been so good to me. He understands that my funds are very limited. After diligent searching and cajoling, he was able to find me a brand new scratch-and-dent unit for only $250 and won't accept anything for his labor! In a previous home, he had given me a used unit for only $800 for his labor and Freon. God has truly blessed me through him over and over! I share this so that people can realize that a brand new unit doesn't have to be the only solution!

I always tell people to do your research if an appliance breaks. Google the issue and look it up on UA-cam. You would be surprised at how many things you can fix yourself. Of course if you are uncomfortable fixing something then call a professional. My husband replaced a heater part for $80. An HVAC guy recommended we get an entirely new system 😬

We usually grill out once a week in the summer but when we do, we load up the whole grill. We will cook hamburgers, hot dogs, pork chops, chicken breasts, etc. Then we will reheat the meat during the week and add sides to go with. . This allows us to cook once and not heat up the kitchen with cooking most of the week. Enjoyed the video.

I got an ice cream maker on Amazon during one of their big sales. I love making ice cream, especially in the summer, to give as gifts, to bring to cookouts, and to keep for myself. Much better quality than anything you can buy and something fun to do.

In summer I try to (pre)cook at nighttime (before going to bed) with open windows. A) the house does not heat up and cools down over night B) Electricity tends to be cheaper at night C) I get to cook in peace without the kids running around😂

Hello Everyone, one of our family's favorite things to do in the summer is pack picnic lunches. When going to Dr., business, and various appointments, we will often pack a picnic and stop at a park and maybe even a beach, depending on where we have to go that day. Ever since I was a child, to me, a picnic is an adventure where we can eat, relax, and daydream as we watch the clouds float by.
    Enjoy your summer everyone😊

My best frugal tip if you have kids:
Make your own popsicles. You know whats in there and at least here in europe the ice cream prices are out of hand.
You can make it with water and juice
    Smoothie ices
    Yoghurt and fruit
They will love it and it saves me a ton of money every summer ❤️

Dear Emmy, most of the things you have mentioned are my summer frugal tips, lol, I think I have been listening to you for so long that it comes natural! One frugal tip that you have mentioned many times is to use your library. Turns out this time of the year my library gives away packets of free heirloom organic seeds. Every time I've been to the library I've grabbed a few and now I am planting them in our garden. And yes, there are tons of things to do for free! We have free summer concerts in our area, we go to parks, we go to the beach, and although we have to pay a parking fee, if you bring your food, and a book, it is so frugal! I love spring and summer!

My tip is for people who live in warmer climates
Turn your AC up. When it's 95 outside 79 is still cool inside...think about it...maybe even try it for a few days and don't forget to use your fans.
If you keep your AC on 68(which a lot of people do) you will have a harder time adjusting to the heat and if the power goes out it might be more difficult for you if you always have your AC set so low.

I take a blood thinner so I tend to be chilly so I can keep my a/c at 78-80 and be comfortable. When I am doing things around the house, I keep a small fan going along with ceiling fans. I live in the midwest and it is quite humid and hot in the summer.

We will probably keep the blackout curtains closed on really hot days. We run the fans. Hoping to get a few solar camping fans to save on electric that way. We also got two solar lanterns at Aldi for $6.99 for use to save electric.

You are right. Also use fans where necessary, do hot things at night (cooking, heavy cleaning, etc) and drink iced things. A side benefit I have found is that I rarely catch colds ( I keep the house very cool in winter). I live on the Texas Gulf coast so winter is rarely a problem.

Thank you for this video. It got me thinking about all the things we enjoyed in 1960s summers that didn’t cost anything.
We had picnics in our garden and cooled off in the paddling pool 😊
We played with skipping ropes, hopscotch, made a garden ‘den’ with whatever we could use. In fact, back in those days we used our imaginations more and that was good fun. We were cowboys and cowgirls, Indians and squaws, Superman, inventors, magicians…
We made lemonade, and ice lollies in plastic moulds and shared them with our friends. We cycled, scootered or roller skated, and played on the swings in the park.
Our father would make us children low stilts out of wood.
It was nice to read our library books and colour in pictures in somewhere cool and shady.
I don’t remember feeling deprived because we weren’t spending money going or doing expensive activities all the time. My parents were family oriented 😀

Black out curtains can save on electric or gas bills. If it is hot in Georgia or really cold, I pull the curtains. All curtains in my house are blackout. Yes, they cost a bit more but in the long run, they pay for themselves.

    Great tips!
I watch for anyone giving away free perennials to fill up the spaces in my yard that could use extra interest. People in my region are always dividing daylilies, hostas and irises and just giving them away. I have a large yard and prefer to spend money on smaller areas where I can get the most impact so those areas are where I plant the annuals.
Also have used silk flowers in hanging planters that look very real from the street and can reuse for several years.
You both scored on your date day. Those Christmas tablecloths are gorgeous and I know Emmy’s heart sang when she spotted them 😊. The little white lamp turned out perfectly. I believe Paul can fix anything.
Have a great weekend and Happy Mother’s Day to Emmy and Paul’s lovely Mom ❤

I have a "kitchen area" in my garage.. Counter, cabinets etc. I have a large toaster oven and electric frying pan set up. Instead of heating up (and messing up 😉 😂) my inside kitchen, I quite often cook out there. I often batch cook and make serving sizes for me and my husband and bake in my toaster oven. Sometimes we only have baked potatoes for dinner.. Why heat up the large inside oven and house? (we live in Florida.. Its already been in the hi 90's 😳😰) I can also cook many meals in my electric frying pan. It works great! 👏🏻

Going to a state park with a lake, small beach area, and lifeguard. It’s free. Bring a picnic and, if it’s hot, there is a food stand where you can buy packaged ice cream treats or a milkshake. For an extra special treat, there’s a small old time pretzel shop where you can still buy soft pretzels warm in a brown paper bag!

We love our free events in our area. We also check for senior day. We have places that let seniors in free on certain days. This tip is not free but it is one of the best things we have purchased. If you travel around the US and are a senior citizen, get your senior pass. It has a fee but does not expire. We get into all national parks and national monuments free. If you are a camper, you can camp for 1/2 off. We have used ours for several years and was money well spent. We usually spend a couple of weeks traveling every year just to visit what our country has to offer.

My favorite most frugal summer tip is to grocery shop in my garden. Today I had a stir fry. I was planning on getting pea pods and swiss chard. While shopping I also found 3 radishes, baby kale, an onion, 3 parsnips and beet greens. Along with a few other veggies from my freezer and fridge, and chicken breast- we had a delicious meal. We also go to rummage sales and get our winter supply of books to read. Summer is a fantastic time to stock up for winter things to do :)

I enjoy hiking which, beyond the gas, is free, I also like setting myself a quest, this summer it is to hike to find as many waterfalls as I can. I invited friend on Facebook to join me and have several takers. I have a book that lists 100 different waterfalls in one area of my state but there are many more. I have not decided yet but I am thinking of trying to see 25 different waterfalls over the summer and autumn. I always pack a lunch, usually meet up and carpool with a friend if it is a longer distance and, of course, always dress appropriately and carry water.

In summer I like free music in the park events & homemade popsicles & fudgesicles. Dollar general used to sell those plastic drink dispensers, I thought would be fun to fill one of them up with homemade bubble solution with a few cheap pie plates & bubble wands & keep it outside if you've got littles. Their are also recipes for homemade sidewalk chalk, or kool aid hair dye. Hosting a family or neighborhood talent show on a budget might also be really fun. I couldn't pick just one :)

We dry clothing outside when the weather is nice - Nothing smells better than line dried clothing! We utilize free walking/biking trails during the summer. We also enjoy fishing on the free public lakes in our area.
We visit the library a LOT during the summer! We check out books instead of buying more. They put on so many programs and activities for the kids. We check out movies we may not have seen before. They have baking pans to use when my 9 and 12 year olds want to try new recipes. They even are having ukulele lessons (with checked out ukuleles) for my 12 year old.
    All for free!
We also check out a list they have for free music concert opportunities in the area. We will often pack a picnic and enjoy some family fun or even a date night for my husbamd and I! I am a teacher and busy mama of 5 so I appreciate all the frugal fun we can find in the summer! Thank you for continuing to share these tips! Smiles, Abby Smith

Summer frugal tip - You can also start this in spring depending on whether or not you live in a hotter climate, but until the sun goes down you keep your blinds / curtains OPEN. My family doesn't turn on our lights until it gets dark outside and even then we only turn on certain lights and turn off others that we don't need. This can also extend to getting into the routine of turning your lights off when you leave the room and unplugging anything that doesn't NEED to be plugged in at all times. It will save you so much money on your electricity bill and the natural sunlight will help regulate your sleep schedule as well.

I make my own kombucha. The process is actually fun, and not that complicated. Pennies on the dollar! Also, making laundry detergent, dog food, infused salts, and oils. Folks and I made my dog’s Bailey chair for about $30. Saving hundreds of dollars! I appreciate all these ideas.

Mother’s Day weekend is being spent at a state park about two hours from our house that has a fabulous new playground for the grandchildren to play on, a packed picnic, and ending with a free outdoor concert with fireworks this evening. My children asked what I wanted… and I said just to spend time with all of you. Memories and good times don’t need a lot of money. Happy Weekend!

You can bake potatoes/sweet potatoes in the air fryer. In SC avoiding the oven is a must.
Those veggies would be great in the air fryer. You can add smoked sausage to the mix for protein. Yum!

That blouse looks great on you. I love your planner. I might have to check that out. I do use a planner, but I might switch to this type. I use my crockpot in the summer, but I put it out on my deck. In the summer I try to do all of my cooking outside to keep the heat out of the house. Unfortunately, we need central air conditioning here in Southeast Indiana but I try to set the temp a few degrees higher and then use my ceiling fans and other fans. I definitely use my blinds as we have a large window that faces directly West and it makes a huge difference. Those tablecloths are great.

dont know if this is frugal. i needed fish for my pond, i have a small 250 gallon pond. i didn't want to spend 100.00 on fish. so in the midst of praying about how to get fish for cheap. my neighbor called me and asked if i wanted her fish. she was getting rid of her pond. so for the adventure of fishing, i brought home, 3 bass, 2 sunfish, 4 gold fish, and about 40 small minnows. they are happy swimming around and they bring me much joy as i sit in my deck chair watching them cavort. my next project hopefully free, is getting a small pond and use it for a bird bath.

One of my summer tips is to buy off-season items that are deeply discounted.
I also love the idea of decluttering. One thing that can help is to have a container for various things, and that's your limit. For example, I have a small clear makeup bag. I use it for nail polish. When it's full, that means I can't buy anymore nail polish. It keeps things from getting out of hand and organized.

My best tip would be when you use your crockpot, insta pot or toaster oven put them out on your patio. I set mine on my table and it doesnt heat up your kitchen. We eat lighter and less in warm weather.
When we grill, outside, we grill extra for another meal that can be warmed in the airfryer, micro or toaster oven.
I set a small table on the deck near the outlet. My crockpot and rotissorie foods get cooked outside.
We often get up earlier (I nap in the afternoon) then stay outside later. This keeps us cooler particularly if doing outside chores.

When vacationing when our kids were young we tried to stay at places that had a kitchenette so we can make our own breakfast and lunch. We use the Harbor Freight Tools black mesh, 60% - 70% UV ray blocking, sun shade tarps liberally for windows, building sides, sometimes on the roof, and like a rain tarp but instead for sun in and about seating areas. They would work well over brick, stone, and cement surfaces about the home as these take 24 to 72 hours to off heat; far more hours than it is cooler in 24 hours and those surfaces are reheating. We have also used them as interior curtain liners. The fabric textile is sold by others in all sorts of dimensions on the internet too.

If you have kids and a back yard, consider a camping adventure in the back yard. Treat it like real camping with a bathroom just inside. Ideally a tent or a tarp using a boyscout or camping design. Super low budget? Back in the day, back yard camping often used a King sized sheet instead of a tarp; didnt do much for rain, drizzle, or dew but much more manageable if it didn't stay up. Slowly but surely add the "stuff"for camping. Free is great but use garage storage=age space and vehicle space as your delimiters.
