I totally love this video, The 3 Most expensive things in the world are Convenience, Impulsiveness and Cheap stuff! This is exactly what I talk about on my channel and on one of my latest videos. DO NOT BUY WHAT YOU DONT NEED. But you should still stock up on things you do need. I recommend getting freezer or 2 and some good shelving and buying on sale/with coupons everything you know you will need and fill up that storage. But again only if you need it and are going to use it. Also just because its cheap does not mean its worth it, I have bought some expensive stuff but its stuff that will last for ever so i don't have to buy 100 of the same thing over my life time.

I think it depends on how much one uses something too. I have the kitchen aid professional mixer, and I love it. I buy good leather shoes and handbags, they last for years. However good can be basic but well engineered. Plus suiting what one purchases to their specific needs. Just buying the “best” because it is suppose to be “the best” is not always the reason to spend the extra money. It is very personal, and doesn’t actually always out preform other models and brands. The more bells and whistles the more opportunities for repairs.

I'm happy you talk about this subject Dawn, because it was after watching one of your videos on this subject in the past, that woke me up that I was that "frugal" type of person. To be honest, it is still a struggle to not give into temptation when I come across amazing clearance finds. I repeat in my head "Death by a thousand cuts" because that's what you tell us, and that really helps me. I was doing so well with not shopping at the Dollar Tree for things I don't need, but I recently got into the habit of watching people's Dollar Tree shop with me videos in the evenings because I find it so relaxing. Well, I had to find a different way to unwind because I found myself shopping at the Dollar Tree more often looking for things I don't need that only add clutter to my home. I know better, and I am embarrassed I am that easily led. I just needed to stay out of the stores, stop watching shop with me and haul videos, and not browsing stores online. There are plenty of other things I should be doing with my time. I have gotten so much better with only buying groceries my family needs, and sticking to my budget. I try to make the majority of our foods from scratch, and I meal plan. Now my husband on the other hand would come home from the store with the lavender flavored hummus if it was on super clearance, but to be fair, he would eventually eat it because he hates waste. Lol.

I stock up on things I use all the time then something changes and I have a load of stuff I won’t use. Olive oil, and now I’ve gone carnivore, face cream then I learned about benzenes and didn’t want to touch it any more, a months worth of baking ingredients and then I realised it was making me ill. Snacks for my Grandson and now he doesn’t like them any more. I always think it won’t happen again, and it happens again!

I rarely stop at yard sales or go into thrift stores anymore. And when I do , I have something I’m needing. And lately, if I can’t find that needed item, I walk out not purchasing anything. God knows I don’t need anymore clothes or shoes or any kitchen gadgets. So, I’m not buying those random things right now. More money in my wallet 😅

As a larger woman I'd have to say clothes from the cheapest of stores that were not flattering but the price was good. Because eventually I ended up not wearing them due to feeling uncomfortable and self conscious about how I looked. I'm trying really hard to pay attention to minimalism to help me direct my spending but also because I struggle with having too many things to take care of in my home.

This summer I am saving money by only going to the grocery stores when I absolutely have to. I am eating all canned goods before buying more. I also have been
Clearing down my basement freezer before I buy more.the freezer is only a quarter full now. When it's gone, then I'll get more.
As for dollar stores, I am putting a halt on most purchases. Only items now are greeting cards, spices,
Garbage bags, personal and cleaning liquids. That's it!

Rationalizing keeps people from working harder, resting more, eating healthy, waisting money, letting chores go, loosing weight, living above their means and on and on. I did that for awhile. I learned to stop and buy from a list. I know how much I need or use in a year. I try for a 3mo to 1yr stockpile. I rotate. Try to combine simplicity with frugality. I started only buying from my list. I actually shop less doing this.
Example: I use tp at a rate of 1 roll per week. It goes on sale once a month. I usually by 3 months worth @ $0.50 roll for Charmin, normal price $1.50-$2 a roll. I do this with everything.
Hams are on sale at Christmas and again in April, I buy according to when the next deep sale price comes around. Christmas 3 months worth and Easter 8-9 months worth.
I do not need to take advantage of every sale. I do usually take advantage of sale where it is free or I get paid to buy the item, but even then not all the time. If it’s something I don’t need I get $5 to buy, I still only get it if I can give it away on my way home from the store.

    > Never buy ahead. Buy when you need it.
    > Never stock up on items that are on sale.
    > Forget shopping sales. Stick to the list of what you need.
    > Never buy to prepare for weather events. (Shops no longer except those returns.)
Think of alternatives to expensive items
    > Use long handled kitchen tongs for arranging firewood in a small wood stove. Fireplace tools are expensive and not needed. One stove shovel for clearing ashes and long handled tongs. Done.
    > Use a 5-gallon bucket for bringing firewood in from outside. It has a handle, costs $2.50 or less to buy, it can't carry so much that it's too heavy to lift, yet can carry enough to last most of a very cold day. Easy to cover with contact paper to match the decor of your home.

    This is not for everyone!!!!
But our family stopped depriving ourselves from luxurious vacations… for a long time we thought being frugal meant not spending money on vacations and doing fun little things for entertainment. Like going to movies or buying little treats.. instead we stopped a lot of small things like nail appointments, movie tickets, new outfits, or local amusement parks… and saved those little luxuries for a BIG trip!!
Not depriving ourselves of the big thing by skipping the little things saved so much!!!

I'm guilty of buying clothes at the thrift store because I envision the item looking differently on then what it looks like in reality. If I try it on at the thrift store, that usually nips it in the bud but most of the time I'm in a hurry so I will just buy it. Then I regret it later. Sometimes it goes in the pile of clothes to donate back to the thrift store. Or worse, I let it take up space for 6 months or a year thinking I will lose weight or I'll buy a pair of pants that will look fantastic with the item. Sometimes I do lose a few pounds and the item does look nice. But not often enough to justify buying the item in the first place. 😊

It didn't seem like much at the time (perhaps $25.00 to $30.00+ per weekend) but I now wish that I had saved and invested most of that money. Yes, there were some treasures found along the way, but going to these places encouraged shopping and spending because they were bargains. I still go now but only a few times a year.

Saving money can be an addiction. Just like people who cannot control their spending because of the high they get getting something new, people shopping for bargains get a high from how much they perceived they saved. So even if something is a bargain if you really don't need it it really isn't a savings.

    I have a couple things I do that😢 helps.
First, I only do a full grocery run every fortnight. Doing a full grocery run includes doing a stock take, starting a meal plan, and only buying what I am using and need that I can use. Only coupons I do are on store apps.

I can see how it is easy to say oh it is a good deal. I like to thrift and and I also find how I can afford a decent amount of groceries is I mainly shop the store adds and markdowns. But yes we can only eat so much and if I have a good amount of stuff stored in my freezer I have to make it through more of that then just buy buy buy. I think so many times people are afraid they will run out of food in our world so they stock up like crazy and that is the panic mind set of shopping and I do not want to live like that. yes I like to save money but like you said if we can stock up and stay in our budget that is so important and I am like you I many times would go over and I have wanted to work harder on being mindful. Even my thrifting trying not to do that as much so when I do it is a treat not just something I do all the time. I think sometimes things can start to become addicting if we do not real them in. I have noticed that can be the case with thrifting. I would thrift and shop so much when I was younger before we had kids and man when it comes to doing things your mind will say oh I can do shopping. Rather than finding something simple and free to do.

I used to stock up on shampoo and conditioner when it was on sale for $0.49. That was like 20+ years ago. I had so much. I donated some and I'm still using up a few bottles. I'd put it in gift baskets too. Bought way more than we could ever use. I finally used up all the air fresheners that I got really cheap or free. I don't find deals like that anymore, but like you said, it's not worth it if you don't use it.

I was never a big coupon user; however, I remember using a coupon to get free Tide powder detergent. The coupon was for a dollar off, and I'd find the small box that was 99 cents. The stores quit stocking that size, lol. I don't mind stocking non-perishable items if I have the storage space. I follow my grandmother's advice to buy the best quality I can afford and to take care of it. I know I reference that often, but it helps me buy things that last. Great video! Love to all, Linda 💕

I could see where that would happen, especially for me on teaching stuff especially art supplies and classroom books. The one thing that I did discover during the pandemic was a true number on what it took supply wise to get by. I am not putting up what I used to for that SHTF day where Armagedón actually happens. I am finding that I really only need about 6 months worth of stuff put up not years worth. Although I was very disappointed when my years (plural) of toilet paper ran out because Dollar General no longer stocks that brand. You may laugh but there are things that are free at the Senior Center that I just walk on by because I don't see them as healthy. People were hauling bags of candy out the other day and I didn't take any of it home, instead just stir fry stuff. I have picked up boxes of donuts and put them back even though I LOVE donuts and they are free. A "good deal" for me as I age is one that is healthy. I finally looked up Silver sneakers, which is free to me, and I will start right after this next round of flooding coming to my part of Texas on Mother's Day and the Monday after. Pray for my neighbors and the bridges to hold as several small ones that allow the rural communities to commute have been damaged and closed.

@@3TXSisters Me too! They just can't catch a break. Hopefully we get a chance for them to get dried out. My daughter lost everything in Ike in Galveston because she couldn't get back in for 2 weeks. We had also had 2 false alarms just weeks before, and by the third round of "Wolf, wolf, wolf!" she had tuned the seriousness of it out. Ground floor apartment, nothing left. I know the hurt they are going through, the panic. IF my house ever floods, I am putting it together, selling and moving to Tennessee.

@rusticgardenretreat4892 We live in hurricane country. You learn how to deal with it. Our house isn't on the water and we're high enough that we're not going to flood. We did reinforce our house and installed hurricane shutters. A whole house generator was installed after Ivan. It helps so much. I hope your daughter is safe!

@@3TXSisters My daughter is fine. We are of like minds as she moved from Galveston and left UTMB after the flood of Ike. Like me, she lives on the high ground in her town. Not to say that it can't happen, but if either she or I flood, then our towns are in serious trouble! We consulted elevation maps, and the less reliable flood maps before making our purchases. I considered installing a generator for the whole house, but to be honest neither she nor I plan on staying in Texas. We will one day move when she retires in 11 years. IF the world would ever settle down, we would move to Italy, but if not, Tennessee. We both love Italy. Too opposing destinations Italy and Tennessee, but Tennessee like Texas does not have an income tax. Unlike Texas, Tennessee doesn't have hurricanes, but does have the Appalachians.
