There's a very important piece of information missing from the SPS history. Jeff Cochran. He was involved at the beginning and the main motorcycle guy. He sold out after like 2 or 3 years and started Speedking Racing. He's still in business today building custom bikes 1 at a time. SPS suffered greatly when he left.
And to add to that, SPS started in Harrison Ohio. I STILL want 1 bad!! How much for this one??

Except for the Iron Cross mirrors, which are rather korny, this is a beautiful bike! This is exactly the kind of bike I'd like to own one day! Perfection on two wheels. 👌

When I was a kid I pieced together a trail 70 with pipes for rear shocks. The bike was un-rideable. This looks to be the same result! God bless.

Sean I just want to say thank you! After watching you buy, and, sale bikes across the country for a few years, I decided to try a little bit of it myself. This is my first season, and I have turned out around 18 bike's. Sean when I say turned out, I mean either I went somewhere out of town, or even state sometimes to buy a Motorcycle, and brought it back to my shop, and sold it for a profit. There were a couple of instances , that I took another bike in" as a trade in value towards something else. Those are some good profitable situations, if you don't take in a worthless peice of sh-t. Right now I'm working out of my Parents towing company. Well there's two different buildings, but they're joind in together. I'm making it sound terrible, but it's actually not. I'm still interested in getting my own place, but the overhead would just be too much for me right now!
Hopefully in a couple more seasons, I will be able to get my own place. But again, thanks for passing on some of your knowledge. I did get a few good pointers, from "Jon's Moto Garage " as well.. Good luck brother, and I mean this from the bottom of my heart. Thank God for Good people like you, and your employees. Well may as well say your family. I will always give y'all the credit you deserve, and when I have to come through your part of the country, to pick up a bike or deliver one, I'll give you a holler and hopefully we can meet up, so I can shack your hand and thank you in person. If that's really what you wanna do then don't give up. I'll bet about 99% of the people on here would have loved to do what they really wanted to but didn't because of responsibilities and or money so I am glad to see you doing it! And the advice about staying out of debt, man that's golden. I will add one more thing, pay in cash and collect in cash every time you can and use credit cards if you really need to and if you can, pay off the balance very month. Good on ya and good luck. I tried my hand at building custom parts. I found out real quick I didn't like dealing with people. Everyone and the mother wants everything for nothing. I had a guy Florida building custom pipes for me, another guy doing custom seats. I was doing handlebars, fenders, and tanks. At the end of the day all I kept hearing was such and such has (insert part) for half what you're charging. It sucked. I finally folded it up because I got sick of it. So best of luck.
The frame was an outsourced custom fabrication on the Ohio built bikes, shop was up the hill from Miamitown Ohio around 5 miles from where I live now,Jeff and Donnie sold the business to a shop in Arizona and that was the last I heard about it. There are photos and a small article about Indian Larry visiting the shop and the article said he was impressed ,I believe the Arizona built bikes aren't same quality level as the originals.
I remember going out to Sturgis during the rally back in the early 2000's, and seeing parking lots full of mass produced custom choppers. I admit, a few were pretty cool, and I wanted one . Not so much anymore, but, I would still like to build one for myself.

I still have it after over 20 years of being a rider.although I did have to take a break when I broke..lol dry for the long messages I'm jst a fan
I am a big proponent of 'ride what you like' but hardtails are stupid. They are made for going to the coffee shop in your pirate gear.
Took mine on a 250 mile ride back in the day, but yeah…not fun.

An original hard tail with the pogo seat, sits you up straight. Your feet sit flat on the running boards and the handle bars come right to hand. Most choppers spend a lot of time doing just the opposite.
Of all the bike builders that cropped up back then, these were the best made and looking bikes, actually practical and rideable.
I worked for the company. That's entirely what we were going for.

7:51 _A few little minor changes really makes this a cool bike._ Aha, little and minor like installing suspension for the rear wheel.
It was a swing arm not a softail and it was called the "Swinger" - the model in the video is the "Sled" - I have the exact bike in silver & black 2 tone, otherwise the same - it came with a 3" BDL open primary and an Ultima 6 speed. I ride mine every day - rode it this morning.
Suckerpunch Sally bikes are awsome. I dream of one..I wish places would make cool factory bikes that would do that.. your right about bikes that are cool..peopme over charge and or people wont work on them...

No offense to Sean but he's a motorcycle guy not a Chopper or bobber guy. Choppers and bobbers are all about anesthetics and going fast. That's what both of those terms mean. Stripping everything off not needed to go or stop. They're not about comfort and surely not about touring across the state.
I have a question! I recently bought a 2001 honda shadow sabre. Everything about the bike is great but there are now some small things that I want change up. One of the first things that I am wanting to do is change the position of the handle bars or change the handle bar itself. I am wondering what would be better? Risers or handlebars? I fit fine except my arm length is short in comparison to my body. Let me know your thoughts!

Seat springs that are heavy enough to hold your weight are too stiff to do any good at all. Get air bags for your seat, they're cheap and way way way more effective. Im a 275 pound fella, I speak from experience. Low Brow has them, its an easy switch.
I really liked SP bikes, they were aesthetically attractive and it made a statement here in LA.

I'm a shorter dude 5 6 120 lb. I want to bike that is capable of 100 plus because I like the top end power. Meant for highway riding but has cargo space and the front fairing windshield etc.. blocking the wind helps a ton. Any recommendations? I currently have a 92 Kawasaki Concours but I don't like how top heavy it is.

I used to own a ridgid Panhead. It had a little Gary Bang seat with 3" springs under it. Looked great with 14" apes. But what a struggle it was, dealing with it.

The season is just starting in central California. The 100+ degree weather is almost gone and I love fall riding better than spring riding because the nights stay warm. But any day on the bike is better than a day on the job!

I got the same feeling from my Virago. The problem is the buck horn bars. Go to low rise or no rise drag bars and you'll feel total control.
After all these years and new technology and all - I still want either a 700-900 Virago or a 600 or 900 Kawasaki Eliminator. I know there are analogs to these bikes now, sorta, but the older bikes speak to me more. But if someone gave me a new-ish Kawasaki 650 Vulcan, I'd be happy.

@@RARdeath Definitely not true. I have a rigid shovelhead and ride it every day. Even on the interstate. It's not nearly as bad as some people think. I was intimidated by them, until I finally rode one. It's just a different riding experience. You feel closer to the road.
@@lex.cordis in the states maybe, over here the roads are trash beyond repair in a lot of places. In all the years I’ve been riding I’ve only ever know one bloke to ride a hard tail more than 500km a year. Definite thumbs up to you sir if u do.

1:03 nope. SPS started in Ohio, not Arizona. I know someone who bought one of these motorcycles when they were still based in OH and he had all kinds of problems with the ignition system, so he looked into converting it to points but I don't know how that ever turned out. I ride a very reliable 40+ year old KZ650 and other than regular maintenance it has only needed new ignition coils.
After moving to AZ, the new owner was accused of fraud but I don't know how that turned out. AFAIK the company went under.
So when are you guys going to start shipping to the UK?

First of all, many of these companies building and selling Harley clone motorcycles started in the mid 1990s. People bought these bike because H-D wouldn't sell them a bike or wanted twice msrp for it, and you have to wait 6 months or more to get it. This happened to me. In 1995, I tried to buy a base Sportster 883, which had an msrp of around $5200. The dealer wanted twice that, and told me it would take several months to get it. He insinuated that if I were willing to pay even more, I could get it faster. I told him where to shove it, went across the street and bought a Kawasaki, for UNDER msrp, and rode away on it that day. I decided then and there that I would NEVER do business with H-D. And I haven't. I have since owned 5 Harleys, starting in 2005, when the used market started to become flooded with Harleys and the prices started to drop. I still have 2, a 1989 FXRS Low Rider, and a 2006 Sportster 1200L. I plan to keep them for the rest of my life.
That bike likely has no actual H-D parts on it. It is probably built out of 100% aftermarket Harley clone parts. The engine could be an S&S, Merch, Rev Tech, or a couple of other brands. Transmissions were usually Andrews or Baker. The switch gear looks oem Harley, but probably isn't.
Since Harley built it's last REAL motorcycle 5 years ago, before switching to the soulless, characterless, M8 engine, and has now even dropped the EVO Sportster, we need a few of these small companies around to build REAL Harleys, since Harley Davidson won't. I'm not interested in a chopper, but I would like an EVO powered bike with rear suspension and tubeless tires.
I do have a question. I have never rode a motorcycle. Will be taking the motorcycle safety coarse . I have gotten the bug to ride , I guess middle age Crisis- lol. But a family member has offered to buy his 2013 Harley Davidson Switchback for a great price with Stage 2 upgrade. Is this a good ideal to buy( at a great price- less than $7000.) The bike for my first bike. My son has offered to ride his smaller bike to get familiar with riding a bike.
If you can hold up the pig of a bike and know how to control your wrist go for it. Personally I’d go somewhere smaller to get use to riding.
2 wheels are already dangerous enough without being a nervous learner on a big bike.
$7000 for 2013 HD is good price.

They were called Sportsters, Harley Davidson made them before they went electric & copied the Indian S.
Harley Davidson Sportster, looked like a motorcycle should, a real Harley. Sportsters were classic style that Harley turned their back on.
Everyone loves it classic.
The factory custom chopper I like is the victory jackpot, stupid name but great looking bike if you're after that 00s nostalgia custom look but with that 40s chopper look a Triumph bobber or a BMW R18 would be a great start to go from, I kinda like the BMW it has that WWII look and a gentleman named Marcus Waltz has made one of the more beautiful looking 40s style chopper/bobber out of one
Saying "Factory Custom" is a contradiction in terms. That's the main problem with the general publics perception and discussion of the custom motorcycle scene. It's a long history dating back to the post WWII era, and in many ways even earlier in the 20th century. To customize is an action, not the description or title of a specific style of bike. If you learned your motorcycle history from watching discovery channel then you are seriously misinformed.

The original SPS out of Ohio are the rare finds (titled too!). I should know I have an '05 93" Shovel built by Donny Loos. Jeff and Donny were smart and sold the brand at the peak of the market before it was flooded by overpriced unrideable billett nonsense. The guy that bought SPS ruined the name (SPS cigars???) and went to jail for ripping off customers or died, depending on which story you believe. Still have mine and it's bad ass!

Run about 20psi in the rear tire to dampen the rigid rear end.
It'll still feel like your spine's going through your ass like a broken jack, but it's a little less painful.
