Everyone around me turkey hunts. When I'm out swapping cards in cameras I kid you not I've had turkeys walking within 30 yards of me while I'm standing upright and walking around. Either I'm an elite ninja, these birds know exactly where I am and don't have the brainpower to process the threat, or they're so smart they know what a firearm or piece of archery equipment looks like and viewed me as a non-threat. Option 2 seems to be more likely than the others to me. Turkey hunting is like rabbit hunting to me. If you're not actively presenting yourself as a threat or behaving like a predator waiting to ambush they can/will see you and not bug out of there like you're a coyote lining up for a takedown. That or I'm just an exceptionally lucky person that's developed a weird worldview because of it.
Got my first bird this year and that is where I aimed. He had a double beard. I'm 65 and never hunted for turkeys seriously. Sat with a buddy and he did all the calling.
I've missed exactly one turkey in my life and it was for this same reason. I shot right over the top of him. It remains, to this day, my most vivid memory of all the turkey hunts I've had, and I always double check myself on my decoys when I first set up to make sure that my head is down on my shotgun, and that I'm going to aim at the proper spot. Excellent video!
Great practice, I will also check on decoys and when I have kids with me I always have them check on decoys so they have gone through it once mentally before the moment of truth
Shooting up or downhill is also tricky. I have passed on shots because of so much head movement, especially when that was all I could see. Haven't missed since aiming for the low to middle neck.
Head shots only cause sometimes, that’s all you’ve got available to aim at! Knowing your pattern is most important and I recommend red dot optics for turkey guns!
Glad you got a 2nd shot. My Turkey targets are centered mid neck so that is where I aim out of repetition. The TSS pattern shows a good spread above and below that point of aim. I’m not saying I’m right or wrong, but it’s worked for me.
aim point may depend on the type of ammo and choke. About 8 years ago I was hunting family property in Florida. I had my Remington 11-87 with a modified choke and a 3" 00 buckshot load in the chamber and 00 buckshot in the magazine. Saw a buck across the fence (neighbor's property) so I walked back about 200 yards for some good cover near a creek bed. Long story short 2 gobblers walked out at about 30 yards from me. I put my rifle sights about an inch above the closest gobbler once he got clear of the other bird and pulled the trigger. He did a back flip. Had two hits, one in the head (fatal) and one in the neck (also fatal). My pattern at that range with those winchester 000 were the size of a volleyball. With the federal flite control 00 buckshot it was tighter, between a softball and volleyball. Point is, had that been TSS and an X-full choke I may have missed that bird.
Great video!! I learned this lesson the hard way when I first started turkey hunting. If I don't have a good shot at the waddles, he gets a pass until next time.
Many years ago, I missed what would have been my first turkey. Even though I've got many turkeys on my resume now, I still take crap from my friends about it, because I describe it as an unmissable shot that I somehow missed. This is exactly what happened to me as well and I started doing exactly what you said to do. I haven't missed since! Now if I could only figure out how to not miss ducks...
@@jacksonshelburne2747 I will certainly admit that I've yanked the trigger more than a few times in my life, so it's reasonable to assume that. However, I was a four time rifle expert in the US Marines and while that does not exclude me from making mistakes, I'd say that I'm skilled enough to know why I miss when I miss (and I do miss). The turkey in this story was a circumstance where I could do nothing other than throw my hands in the air and say, "I just don't know what went wrong."
Not an arm chair quarterback comment just truly amazed. If i didn’t wear a mask and had an orange lanyard on i would have been spotted in a millisecond. But it works for you so good for you. Also do you normally run that many decoys? It’s a personal preference but i don’t think i would want to haul that many. Unfortunately i didn’t even hear any remotely close or was able to call any in this year. I have one more chance in a couple weeks so maybe i will luck out.
The beard and stealth shades with a brimmed hat cover most of our face that a mask would cover. So many times no need for a mask when we have those. We had a very solid background too. Turkeys don’t react to color, they react to movement so the orange lanyard doesn’t matter IMO as long as you aren’t moving it. #of decoys we use depends. We have found a ton of success with the “love triangle” setup, which actually is a strutter with a strutt’n 360 motion base, 2-3 hens tightly packed to it, ideally with a breeder in front of the strutter and then a 3/4 strut Jake that is about 10-15 yards from the setup that looks isolated and alone. The birds see the setup, we turn the back of the tail of the strutter to face the bird to tell the incoming bird he’s dominant and then they come in and see the isolated Jake and size him up first. It’s crazy how well it works.
I took my first turkey ever yesterday (5/5/2023) he came and looked right at my decoy, i aim a bit low on his head at 20 yard or so, full choke, 3inch Winchester double X 1¾oz load shot 4, dropped him right where he stand, neck is totally pepper with bbs, apparently i never know what my pattren look like, really have to check it out, gun is a browning gold hunter pass down from my old man. Looking forward for this fall turkey season, got my first harvest of the year plus it was my first time turkey hunting ever
Awesome congratulations! Definitely recommend pattering your gun at short and long range (at least 40 yards) so you know your effective range and what your gun is doing. Repeat this anytime you change shotgun shells or chokes! Good luck out there!
That’s what I was thinking! How did he get away with that much movement on birds that close?! I’ve had turkeys pick me out that close with zero movement. He was looking back and forth and talking while 3 turkeys are standing 15-20yds away with no mask on. Crazy
@@-B_G- stealth shades, a beard and slow movement. Plus we had a whole decoy set that they were distracted with. These birds are obviously use to people but they aren't pets lol. they might be a little more tolerant to movement than a bird in the deep woods, but we hunt what's available to us.
I went back to a regular modified or improved cylinder years ago for this very reason. Still keep the pellets out of the meat up close, and still knockin 'em over out to 40 with number 4's. That was an impressive video.
number 4's with 2 ounces of lead in a 3" shell are deadly and kicks hard! Only now you caint git 2 oz becoz of inflation...1 3/4 oz is all I saw for sale earlier this year.
The breast meat is actually considerably lower and further back than most realize. The second shot was back and spine but no BBs on the breast meat. Especially in those tight up close shots.
No mask, bright orange necklace. I’m shocked those birds didn’t see your head moving so much. Full strut head tucked back and you aimed high that was a recipe for disaster for sure. Luckily that bird was fixated on one of those 30 decoys. Congrats.
Ever heard of stealth shades? They cover your eyes and you can wear a mask still but with a beard and stealth shades and hat it covers your face well. Also the love triangle decoy setup is deadly. You should try it, it plays off the dominance of the birds and gives them an isolated easy target to pick on while approaching the big pack
No facemask? What's with the red or orange thing around your neck? Both are like a neon sign at night in the desert to a wild turkey. And yeah I've missed before and it sucks but I learned.
People crying about the orange. No bologne, I see MORE turkeys when I am out upland hunting wearing an orange vest and hat then when I'm actually huntin the darn things. They don't care about color as much as we might think. I've also had them walk right past me while sitting in my running vehicle. It's all about movement in relation to the environment around you. Don't be too unnatural or sudden with your movements.
yep you can get away with alot if you are still or moving slowly and smartly, etc, etc. They don't care about color at all from what we've seen. (at all - very little as they do care a little about decoy face color, etc. lol)
Very good video I learned this the hard way years ago except was so confident I used a single shot and didn't have time for a follow up 8( so it was a big miss. Never again.
Personally, I think TSS patterns can be too tight. I know many are impressed with their tight TSS patterns, but you better know your gun's point of aim when using them. A complete miss up close is not a deadly pattern. I like the knock out power of TSS, but some chokes really shoot tight patterns with the stuff. Regardless, you really need to know what your gun & load can do. A tight TSS load requires a very still target these days, & live critters aren't always still! For those who never miss, you haven't hunted long enough!
Try a Patternmaster Black Mamba and then tell me if TSS is too tight..its all above the right choke tube and the gun that matches it....Apex 9and 10s you won't b disappointed on that combo...
@@wolvesnight I appreciate the suggestion. I know what my Indian Creek Black Diamond Strike chokes will do on my 20, 12, & 10 gauge shotguns. I've used Indian Creek chokes for a long time, & I don't see myself switching to anything else. Most serious turkey hunters in my area use Indian Creek chokes, & they were popular long before TSS. If I want a more open pattern, I will put a modified choke in my gun (which I haven't tried yet). I don't see myself shooting 9 & 10 unless I was using a .410 or 28 gauge. Patternmaster are great chokes, & I use one for my Browning Gold 10 when shooting steel shot at waterfowl.

I feel like turkey guns come down to personal preference and style. I like 12ga with shorter barrels especially when in a blind and probably would go with a trusty pump action to both save some money and ensure reliable cycling if you did need to follow up. Outside of that I don’t think you can really go wrong!
@@chriscampbell895 also if you hunt turkey, duck and goose, then I went with a 28” barrel Beretta A300 outlander. Great versatility. There are always trade offs when you are using an “all purpose” gun, such as the longer barrel is a bit cumbersome at times in the turkey woods, so if you are just turkey hunting with it, then that’s when I would go with the shorter barrel. Good luck out there!
Totally disagree, I hate picking pellets out of the meat, especially now with the TTS #9. Mistake was not making it stretch its neck out for you, easily done with mouth call, safety off, cheek buried into the stock.
I'm no pro or video guy. I don't like wasting meat. My sight is on mid neck or head. Been doing good. Never seen so many decoy on a hunt?? 2 0r 3 for me.
No pellets in the meat and we rarely do. The love triangle is a killer decoy setup! You should try it, it will blow your mind. Turkeys ATTACK this Decoy Setup | Turkey Hunting Tips ua-cam.com/video/Qdl3DIAr2H0/v-deo.html
Oh I use 3 most times. Hen laying down with Jake over her and a feeding hen. I've set up several times on a point of a field or wood line......the Gobbler's attention on the group.... shoot him in the back of the head!!! LoL 😂
Why would you have a perfect broadside shot and then aim at the body? How much meat did you get out of that? I totally agree with your placement of the neck meeting the feathers but i would never agree with a body shot, if that was too far for you to hit the spot then your decoys were too far away for your skill level. But it seems you are a pretty highly skilled shooter so i am confused.
Rushed the second shot in the moment and didn’t want to make the same mistake twice. No meat lost, not even a BB in the meat. The breast is so much lower and further back than people think
lol - I always aim at the top of the head (in fact If I have a good mid-range 15-20 yard shot - I often try to hit the head with the bottom half of my pattern so that I don't spoil ANY of the meat). Strict head shots have no chance of wounding and losing a bird. Haven't missed a turkey so far. My advice would be to aim at the head and don't miss. - spend less money on decoys and use that for a nice choke and a couple extra shells to confidently pattern your gun.
Oh and don't shoot at a strutting bird - make a "put" sound if he won't break strut (or do a quick 3 note yelp on a mouth call) - that will pull him out of strut most of the time and he will stretch his neck. - This reminds me of that turkey story I heard where a dude hunts with a new turkey hunter and the new guy doesn't shoot a turkey that was 8 yards away behind a stump- he asks - "why didn't you shoot?!" - the new guys says, "all I could see was his head".
Doesn’t change that the birds head can move. You are lucky you haven’t missed yet. Have missed upright birds because they moved too. It’s just a matter of time for you. If you haven’t missed yet, just wait…
I second that Isaiah. I put my bead on the eyeball. Not the base of the neck. Never understood the guys that suggest this. A low shot results in a breast hit bird. But hey do what works for you. And to say just wait you’ll miss….. buddy we’re talking birdshot here. If you miss a gobbler with it please stay the hell out of the woods and take up golf or tennis hahaha
You are talking bird shot that is the size of a golf ball when it is close range. So if you have a golf ball pattern aimed at a golf ball sized target and that moves the amount of a golf ball you are missing. I don’t understand how people watch this video where I am literally aimed at the head of the turkey like you are suggesting and miss because the head moves and say “aim at the head”. If you don’t want to take the video evidence and adjust before it happens to you then, good luck, I hope you continue your streak. You hunt enough and keep aiming at the head at close range, you will eventually miss
Your mistake was in your choice of chokes...you set up your decoys 15 yards in front of you with your cameras set up in your decoy spread. You fully intended to let the birds into the decoys before shooting so why the super full turkey choke that will keep a tight pattern out to 50 or 60 yards. If you pulled the trigger when the bird was out at range the pattern would have had plenty of time to open up.
Most important thing is sitting still. The orange lanyard is mainly so if you drop it on the ground it is easy to find. Don't want to lose the remote to our strutt'n 360 motion system.
there's a chance it would but most of the time they know to avoid it, they also get a little more suspicious anytime they're moving after they get shot at
Fun fact. Dad missed a Tom last year at 25 yards. Just kinda jumped and flew a little ways. I killed him 20 minutes later about 100 yards away. Even got to gobbling again lol
I’ve turkey hunted my whole life. There are so many things wrong with your set up that I’m surprised you even had a shot to miss. Blaze orange call lanyard? No facemask? A dozen decoys? Hard to take any advice from someone with those flaws glaring. I’m going to guess those turkeys had been baited to use that area.
That decoy setup is one of the most effective decoy setups you will ever use. People pay too much attention to color, and I had stealth shades on covering my face and eyes. If you haven’t tried that decoy setup you are missing out. It has killed 100s of birds. ua-cam.com/video/Qdl3DIAr2H0/v-deo.html You should consider looking at outcomes more than what you think is right
@@WeekendWoodsmen To each his own, but I couldn’t recommend anything that I saw for the way I like to pursue turkeys. There are turkey hunters, and there are turkey killers. I will chose to stay on the killing side.
I agree, all that movement usually means game over but only have public land access and though early season birds are not super skittish they become so after opening weekend - these were flocked up so maybe early season? Also maybe the land is a private hunting lease so they are not pressured?
Breaking News: DNR in whatever the hell state this is concludes annual aerial turkey survey and determines turkey population has doubled in the last 12 months. Commissioner announces extended season and increased bag limit effective immediately.
I could be wrong but I thought the first rule of turkey hunting was never wear red, blue, or black. Your entire chest is red paracord. The average hunter is an idiot and could shoot you without PID. Idk maybe you are on private land and this isn't a huge issue but it could be when that same hunter trespass on the private land. I'm not saying this as correction or a smart ass but more for your saftey because people are so very stupid.
Sorry... but as someone who's shot shotguns competitively for about dozen years... there's zero chance of you missing that shot simply because the turkey ducked its head, even with a full choke (which I can't understand why you'd use such a tight choke at close range... but whatever, if you did). Even at 10 yards, the shot will have spread by several inches. You just straight up shot over his head... likely because you didn't plant your face into the stock or you lifted your head as you were pulling the trigger (which is frequently why shooter miss high in target shooting).
Luckily those toms were full of testosterone & stayed for u for a second shot 😂. By the way, what was that bright orange/red necklace on your neck? Surprise turkeys didn’t pick u out
Yeah but when you say "for 30 yard+ shots aim at the head", it kinda sounds like your saying you can shoot it in the body when its in close, which is just dumb/unnecessary...there's a few more things I could say but ill bite my tongue. Your advice about getting down on the gun and and aiming at the waddles is spot on though...a pellet or two in the breast never hurt anybody
@@04granada you aim at the head at 30+ because the pattern is much wider and you don’t want to blast it in the chest with BB starting to drop at that range. Close range waddle shot ensures a head/neck hit and the pattern is so tight you don’t have to worry about pellets in the meat. Not sure what is dumb about that?
If you aim that low your gonna be shooting into the breast and have a bunch of pellets in the meat that’s not where you should aim and you also rushed the shot way to fast and didn’t wait for his head to stop moving!
They are animals your never know when their head is going to move, and per previous comments with that tight of a pattern you do not hit breast meat. Aim point for bow as reference, which is where the beard connects, that gives you a good indication of where vitals are and breast is 2-3 inches below that, so you are 4-6 inches above breast with that aim point with a 2-4 inch pattern. Have shot tons of turkey with that aim point and never wasted meat.
@@WeekendWoodsmen it’s really not that hard to shoot one in the head and yes the head is always moving but you just gotta be patient and wait for it to stop and yes you’ll have a tight pattern from like 10 to 20 but after that it’s gonna start opening up so I disagree
@@charliebruneau5779 in the video it says 30 yards plus, aim at the head…so where is your advice different? And in the split second to decide to squeeze the trigger the head is always going to be “not moving” the problem is what happens from the time you decide that to when the payload arrives…
Why in TF were you moving that much with turkeys that close!? It’s a miracle that they didn’t see you! I guess the decoys saved you. I don’t like decoys, they take away from the skill needed to bag a gobbler.
Watching the video back sometimes you realize the difference between how much you think you are moving and how much you are moving, this was definitely one of those cases!
IT DEPENDS ON THE DISTANCE OF THE TURKEY AND WHAT YARDAGE YOUR GUN IS SIGHTED IN AT!! THIS IS DUMB DON'T AIM HERE IT COULD BE WHERE YOU HAVE TO AIM MAKE THE SHOT. REALLY.
Covered distance in the video if you watch, and unless you sighted your gun in to shoot 2” high or low (which why would you) then this is the proper aim point and it’s hard to argue with clear video of why.
@@WeekendWoodsmen MAYBE YOU'D BE AIMING WRONG BUT DON'T TITLE IT; YOU'RE AIMING WRONG AS I EXPLAINED AND EXPLAINED IT IN DETAIL, IT DEPENDS ON SEVERAL FACTORS. I DON'T NECESSARILY SIGHT MY GUN IN JUST LIKE YOU NIMROD.
@@WeekendWoodsmen I will say, I am impressed with you having the balls to sit in the woods near a full strut decoy. I don’t think id ever find the courage 😁
I understood the point. The brain and spine connect into the head, not much for vitals in the waddles. Best of luck with your hunting and I agree to do what works for you
The spine does, that’s all that matters. At close range if you put a golf ball through the spine the birds brain no longer functions. Good luck out there
Agreed but you don't need a choked out 3.5" shotgun to shoot turkeys just a few yards away. I guess grandpas ol fixed choke shotgun makes more sense now. Tss, turkey chokes , and reaper decoys are all made for people who were not woodsmen. Trickery is the best part of hunting to me. Good luck with your golf ball sized pattern. Let me know if you need some turkey breast too
Getting birds in that close is definitely tough, it’s also fun! Totally agree the ultra tight patterns aren’t ideal in many situations. I do know when we are out west in South Dakota, having a little extra range is nice. Many other times, not as nice. Good luck to you also!
Meat is lower than that, head may not have been all the way down but you can also see the pattern hits right where the head was so my head was down pretty good
First you probably weren’t subbed to begin with. Second, that is the most effective decoy setup you can use. 3rd have stealth shades and a beard with a brimmed hat, and any one that knows anything about turkey knows that they aren’t going to react to color if it’s not moving and clearly wasn’t moving enough to scare them. You think as much as we hunt and film turkey from the ground you don’t figure out how to get away with moving. Guess you should spend less time being an ass and more time sharpening your hunting skill if you are getting busted moving. Glad you decided to take your pointless comments someplace else! ✌️
that's best case scenario, it isn't always going to be perfect, that's how hunting is, sometimes you got to just accept it and go for the best shot even if you get a little bit of shot in the meat
His head was up when I shot too, look how that turned out for me. Never know when they are going to move and when you are locked it you won’t see that movement. The breast meat is actually lower and back further than that and the tight pattern isn’t going to hit breast meat. Shot lots of birds and never ruined breast meat.

Thanks for the reminder!
thanks for watching!
Damn, thats like a thousand dollars in decoys you got there. 😂
The STRUTT’N 360 is the most important part of it. The motion makes any decoy you put on it work like a $200 decoy.
I'm still wonder how you got away without having a mask on. Enjoyed the video
The stealth shades make a big difference!
bc as u can see these are turkeys that are walking right past his house. they know him. he might as well shoot his own dog

Thanks for the comment!
You know I was gonna comment same thing, cause that's my experience exactly
number 4's with 2 ounces of lead in a 3" shell are deadly and kicks hard! Only now you caint git 2 oz becoz of inflation...1 3/4 oz is all I saw for sale earlier this year.
I’ve hunted ducks with smaller decoy spreads.
LOL!!
😂😂😂
us too but, big flock, they like the set up.
Hahahahaha
Lmao😂,,Thats funny right there
When aiming lower, or in this case a body shot, any tricks to ensure you have gotten the pellets out of the meat during processing?
The breast meat is actually considerably lower and further back than most realize. The second shot was back and spine but no BBs on the breast meat. Especially in those tight up close shots.
I always aim for the waddles, you made a rookie mistake 😂
Sure did!
The glasses and beard cover the mask. And turkey don’t give a crap about color as long as it isn’t moving, it’s orange.
Dang sorry to hear it and thanks for the comment!
Agree! Thanks for the comment!
Don't you know, before tss, turkeys were practically unkillable. Lucky we have it now.

Hey bud what’s the best gun for turkey hunting in your opinion
I feel like turkey guns come down to personal preference and style. I like 12ga with shorter barrels especially when in a blind and probably would go with a trusty pump action to both save some money and ensure reliable cycling if you did need to follow up. Outside of that I don’t think you can really go wrong!
@@WeekendWoodsmen
Thank you
@@chriscampbell895 also if you hunt turkey, duck and goose, then I went with a 28” barrel Beretta A300 outlander.

Part of the fun!
You hunt enough and keep aiming at the head at close range, you will eventually miss
classic I haven't missed yet....keep hunting
So much negativity Jasper, remember to each their own. It doesn't matter if you are satisfied with what you do. And accomplish
Yup, turkey hunters are some of the worst about thinking there is a right way and a wrong way to hunt and judging.

Cool dude
thanks for watching!
Yep, it’s a bit tricky predicting if the birds are going to commit close to stay further out so we are set up for worst case scenario distance wise
All the camo, but then orange rope etc. Why
Most important thing is sitting still. The orange lanyard is mainly so if you drop it on the ground it is easy to find. Don't want to lose the remote to our strutt'n 360 motion system.
Hands and face move the most so just cut tip of index finger to text and pick your nose

if you miss, would the turkey ever come back around that area?
Typically yes, they will. Sometimes even the very next day
I had them come back within half an hour just depends if your where they wanna be
there's a chance it would but most of the time they know to avoid it, they also get a little more suspicious anytime they're moving after they get shot at

We are on private, but the lanyard is bright orange. Might not come across that well in the video.
Sorry... but as someone who's shot shotguns competitively for about dozen years... there's zero chance of you missing that shot simply because the turkey ducked its head, even with a full choke (which I can't understand why you'd use such a tight choke at close range... but whatever, if you did). Even at 10 yards, the shot will have spread by several inches.
You just straight up shot over his head... likely because you didn't plant your face into the stock or you lifted your head as you were pulling the trigger (which is frequently why shooter miss high in target shooting).
Possible, but I am pretty sure I was down on it. Mistakes do happen though!

For clarity do Chronicles = Waddles?
@Weekend Woodsmen yes sir just different regions calls different things I suppose. I spelled it wrong with stupid autocorrect lol.
55 yards away i aim for the top of the head
Yes at that distance
Its better to miss than to hit a turkey in the body with a shotgun dude.. theres only so much meat on one to begin with.
There wasn’t a single BB in the meat. The breast are lower than that and lots of breast padding between that and meat
Yell, hey, head goes up periscope and pow

Covered distance in the video if you watch, and unless you sighted your gun in to shoot 2” high or low (which why would you) then this is the proper aim point and it’s hard to argue with clear video of why.

If you kill the head, the body will die too.
Agreed, and I was aimed at the head. I think you’re missing the point.
Should aim higher than you showed. Destroy a lot of meat. My guess your head was not down on the gun.
Meat is lower than that, head may not have been all the way down but you can also see the pattern hits right where the head was so my head was down pretty good
