Oh my, a turkey hunting video with good advice that will not cost me a fortune to get started. Thanks.
glad you found it useful!
I had trouble finding it on your site
What did you have trouble finding?
Tomorrow is opening day here in Alabama. Going with my grandfather who lost nearly all of his hearing due to a ton of blood loss a few years ago. This will only be my second time turkey hunting, but he has done it for over 20 years and has a huge passion for it. He's excited to be back in the woods turkey hunting for the first time in a couple of years, and even more excited to be taking me. But im a little nervous, yall wish us luck.
Came here for a few tips. thanks for the time spent and tips in the video. Keep up the good work.
thanks and good luck! you'll have to let us know how it goes!
Weekend Woodsmen we didn’t see or hear any turkeys but I learned a lot from him and look forward to the next time! I’ll be sure and let you know when we get one.
Add a compact folding saw to the essentials. If you are locating and stalking, you’ll appreciate having a quiet way to remove branches where you sit.
I always have one in my vest! That’s a great call out! Thank you
I have never hunt nothing. I want to start, thinking turkey will be my first hunting trip.
Turkey hunting is a great thing to start with! Just remember their eyesight is incredible and they can see movement from a long way off. If you must move make it a very slow move! Read this for some great tips: www.weekendwoodsmen.com/single-post/HennedUp-Turkey-Hunting-Tips-for-Tough-Gobblers
Awesine that is great :D i recommended Turkey Hunting
turkey hunting is hard to do. but it's fun. my husband killed 2 Tom yesterday morning here in ga
Deer hunting is easier
Same
I turkey hunted for a while here in East Texas, some of the toughest hunting I have ever done, but also the most exciting.
+Rick Nethery it is definitely our favorite time of year!
Excellent info for those that have not experienced the most awesome spring pastime. Good job.
+David Coley thank you!
going for my first time this spring. good video :)
+Jake's GoPro you will be hooked the first time you hear a gobble! Good luck!
Going my first time in October thanks for the vid it was informative
good luck! and thanks for watching
Thanks! I didn’t get drawn for AZ elk so I am putting my focus on turkeys for now haha
good luck! I've heard elk hunting is amazing but very similar to turkey from a vocal and strategy standpooint?
So far that holds true, a big difference being turkey’s have that incredible vision! Haha
@@WildTines what's easier to deal with? the turkey vision while not worrying about scent or chasing elk but worrying about the wind? They both seem to burn us all the time! lol
Haha man I’m excited!
Great video keep it up
+Samuel Beckley thank you!
Thx for info
Thanks for the comment!
thanks guys
+Chase Glover no problem!
I'm hunting this weekend
Good luck! Can’t wait for the season to start here!
Thanks man great video, I want to start hunting probably start with turkey.
Turkey is a great way to stay because it doesn’t take as much gear, easier to get permission on private land, and it is a really fun hunt!
Can I use a 20 gauge?
Absolutely, I recommend getting a turkey choke for it if you have the ability to change chokes in it. Either way make sure to pattern your gun to know what your effective range is. ua-cam.com/video/CdtKG9BKeqU/v-deo.html
Do u wear the turkey vest under or over the camo leaf suit?
We wear it over the camo
I'm going turkey hunting next weekend
What state?
Missouri
Nice! Good Luck! We have to wait until April 23rd here in Ohio!
Thanks for the comment! Good luck next week!
Weekend Woodsmen in Ohio I’m still 12 so my season starts the 18th
Glad you said shells, I totally would have went out with shells.
You laugh...but I am sure it has been done! 😂
Where did you buy your leaf suit? Please respond thanks.
Cabelas, but you can find many similar other places!
You can also use 410 and 20ga
very true
Where did you get your leaf suit?
cabelas a few years back. I love the thing and wear it when deer hunting on the ground too!
How about shotgun scopes?
We don’t use shotgun scopes. Some do though, personal preference!
I'm totally going to rip a crow call this season!
It a good tool to have in your tool box!
oh guys should try it out
+Chase Glover we will check it out. We might have a surplus of nitros to burn through first, we will have to crush some turkeys!
If you try it, you might have to look for a head, that's what happened to me when I shot mine last spring.
do you guys use thrid degree
+Chase Glover haven't tried that, do you like it? We usually use Remington nitro turkey
Should you wear blaze orange?
If you are in an area where you know there are hunters you may way to put something orange above you but there is no need to wear it. (Just be careful when you are carrying your decoys around)
but read you state rules to be sure
Am I allowed to use a 20 gauge and still get a turkey?
Thanks for the comment! In most states yes, always double check your regulations though. As for effectiveness get a good turkey load like long beard xr and pattern your gun at various distances to know what your effective range is. We have videos on patterning our guns on our channel.
Can I use a 16 gauge with modified choke
that is hard to answer without knowing more about the make and model of the gun and choke. but you should be able to work with gun smith to confim
@@WeekendWoodsmen Remington 870 express 16 gauge
It should work. All you need to do is pattern your gun at various ranges and make sure you stay within that effective range. Here is our video on patterning guns so you know how to do it. Thanks for the comments! ua-cam.com/video/CdtKG9BKeqU/v-deo.html
@@WeekendWoodsmen I just traded it in for a maverick 88 12 gauge, with a modified choke. I'm just gonna use that with #6 turkey
Don't forget to breathe Riley.
+Jason Glover knock it off!
How much would the leaf suit cost?
+Jeffery Brummett 120-135, its the Cabelas leafy pro II, however we wait until they go on sale. Pretty sure we both got them on sale. I paid 100 for the 2XL which is normally 135. You can also find other types for cheaper but his is a mesh that is very light for those warmer days!
Okay thank you very much. Im 14 and never been and i wanna be ready as possible. Its very close
+Jeffery Brummett no problem. The leaf suite is nice but you can get away without it, just won't be able to get away with as much movement
Jeffery Brummett go on amazon you can get them way cheaper especially for a beginner you don't need to blow 100 bucks on camo
Upstate Angler thank you!
they are making a 20 gauge version
cool, I'll have to watch for it
How many cups of coffee did you have before you filmed this?
I talk fast in general!
Shouldn’t you wear orange for turkey hunting?
No, turkey hunting is done in full camo. Turkeys can see color so you want to make sure you are fully blending into the environment. You have to be careful and aware of your surroundings when turkey hunting. You should avoid wearing anything with, red, white, or blue when turkey hunting.
Okay thanks!
Happy hunting
You too! Good luck!
Also, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention to check your local game laws. Some states require that you have an orange hat on when moving or an orange band around the tree when you are set up. The states we hunt allow all camo. Thanks again for the question!
That's deer hunting
yeah it works really well, but is kinda expensive
+Chase Glover looks like it's on sale a cabelas right now!
You say not to wear a logo with brightness on your hat for Turkeys? How come WA State requires Turkey hunters to wear 400 sq inches of blaze orange or fluorescent Hunter pink? If a Hunter is to be visible to other hunters, then how the hell are they to hide from Turkeys? I thought that turkeys are color blind. In fact, I really haven’t found any videos of any Hunter, wearing orange and hunting on public land. Washington requires your hunting blinds that has orange on them too so you don’t get yourself shot by other hunters during the busy season. Anyway, thought I’d share because to be ready for Turkey hunting also means to be ready for a game warden.
Some states do require it. Turkeys are not color blind. The biggest thing is not moving and bright colors will make it easier for them to spot movement. So we avoid it on our hats if we can because your head tends to move a lot.
it's good but kinda expensive
everything is now days
I usauly use a turkey mouth call so you don't make so much movement
We agree those are the best to minimize movement and we use them too, however due to the longer learning curve associated with them we didn’t feel it fit in an essential turkey gear video. Thank you for you comment and good luck this year!
@@WeekendWoodsmen I'm glad you said that because I just bought some cutter calls yesterday from B.P.S and some of my calls sound like animals other than turkey according to my sons and wife. Do you recommend me hunting from my deer pop up tent with the calls you've presented since I've never turkey hunted b4 and our Texas season starts tomorrow and I wanna go next weekend maybe? I'm more likely going alone as I do all my hunts deer, hog, squirrel etc... I only have UA-cam to guide me.
You can hunt out of any sort of a ground blind to hide your movement. Turkeys are NOT like deer and do not need to get used to blinds, so you can take it out and set it up the morning of the hunt and turkeys will walk right up to it. You can even set it right out in the middle of a field. If you know the turkeys pattern from scouting you won’t need to call. Otherwise you may want to just get a box call or something that is easy to learn. Good luck!
@@WeekendWoodsmen Ok thanks! That makes me feel like I'll have success , I duck hunted for the first time last year and I loved it except for the wading in the mud and gator filled waters so turkey hunting will be the new thing for 2019.
Awesome! Good luck out there!
hard to get turkeys inside that 30 yard range....good luck to all bow hunters lol
STRUTT’N 360 helps with that!
What is a Remington 11-80? That doesn’t exist .......
Hence the immediate correction.
If you used a better deke instead of those POS ones they wouldn't spook so bad.
Debatable. We did use an Avian X hen last year. I like that decoy a lot but it isn’t necessary to spend that much money just starting out.
3/4 Jake with a real fan will pull them toms in. Small enough not to intimidate.
You are right, jake decoys are always an option, and we use them but haven’t put a really jake tail on it because neither of us ever want to burn a tag on a jake, but we have definitely thought long and hard about it! That is also something that is optional for a beginner.
You don't need to burn a tag on a jake. All of my tails go on the wall with the beard. 20 bucks is what I paid to get a jake tail mailed to my house from ebay. Also a possibility to use a tail off of a domestic bronze turkey if you have access to them.
Good to know, thanks for the info!
So how did people hunt turkey before all this crap came around?
🤷🏻♂️
Wasn’t even a 870 it’s a 11-87 and it’s a semi auto not a pump
you're actually completely wrong. Not only is it an 870 but it is a pump...like it pumps...I own the gun lol but I appreciate the attempt and comment :)
@@WeekendWoodsmen I was going solely of how the gun looked before it cut away I couldn’t tell if it was the same gun
@@WeekendWoodsmen The real question is what is that gadget over the trigger guard you have and what is that for?
@@leroydaniels5793 that is a gun that I keep hung on the wall so that is the trigger lock in order to keep it safe in the house
