”P-Funk is the DNA of Rap.”
(George Clinton)
Welcome to the wonderful world of FUNK, youngster! Enjoy the ride. It's wild.
I can dig it💯💯💯✊🏿
I love when the young find and enjoy music we grew up with.
@@TheMsPhyl It's the sole reason I'm here.
@@slappyslapstick4045 Same here. The reactions are priceless.
Ain't that P Funk?
Parliament and Funkadelic are the same band headed by The funk legend George Clinton.
Yeah George was trying to make money for a tour and Motown on the parliaments so he name the parliament and his our name was funkadelic and p funk all stars
Appreciate the knowledge.
He was label hustlin EARLY. RZA followed the blueprint very well 🤣
Sort of. George said Parliament made more money. Funkadelic got more pussy.
Intermingled rotating members, but distinctly different musical directions.
Parliament, Funkadelic, Parlet, Brides of Funkenstein, Horny Horns, all put out records in ‘76, all under George Clinton’s influence.
Parliament was the funk r&b group and funkadelic was the funk rock group. You can’t have parliament singers without the funkadelic musicians and you can’t have funkadelic musicians without parliament singers lol.
James Brown started the funk and P-Funk took it to another level.....space funk
You skipped over Sly Stone, the bridge between the two
The monkey sound you're referring to is the quica a brazilian talking drum.
Yes, everyone should get to see a skilled person play it.
Eugene Chapman school me/ us bruh. Interesting I need to google that.
Cuica
One of my favorites by them. The long version is about 15 minutes long, and trust me, we got our workout at the club. Love this.
Welcome to the realm of when musicians played their instruments and vocalists sang without auto tune. FUNK, baby!
When I was a kid, their album covers were my first posters😁💯💯💯
Sadly, this short version robs you of one of the greatest GUITAR SOLOs of all time!!!
Facts.

Exactly
Facts
100%!
Young man, this is what we call a FUNK opera!
Funk's ELITE = Parliament Funkadelic
- Funkadelic and Parliament are both George Clinton's bands..... so yep.....
- It is funk...... but it was definitely funk on a different level
-"YAAAY YAAAAY" -Ice Cube
-Everyone in the world has sampled this and just about every other George Clinton based song... lol
Former lead singer of the 70's group The Spinners Philipe Winn left the group and joined PFunk you can hear him on this track. At the end, "I got ants in my pants and I need to dance"...
Best part of the record he killed it.
You noticed they used twerk in a phrase. These kids trying to catch up to the past. Nothing new but the cussing
@THINK!! I'm singing on the record, he say's twerk
@THINK!! HIGH, My name is ...C L I P P A Y N E
...and I ain't from NJ.
@THINK!! 44 years "BRUH"
You need to listen to the extended version with incredible guitar solos!
They were and still are their own astronomical genre lol
Parliament Funkadelic are combined musical forces led by George Clinton & Bootsy Collins. It was called Funk, P-Funk, Psychedelia, Funk Rock, Psychedelic Soul...P-Funk is the father of G-Funk. Another song that has been sampled over 150 times by rappers. You need to check out George Clinton- Atomic Dog.
@IceManLikeGervin .... Bow-wow-wow-yippie-yo-yippie-yeah!
Black steel in the hour of chaos!
But when P-Funk was used, it wasn't used as a genre, it literally just meant Parliament + Funkadelic, so it was exclusively used when they became P-Funk allstars. For example, a group can't say they are the genre of P-Funk, it can only be P-funkesque as an homage to George Clinton's P-Funk allstars.
Don't forget legendary keyboardist Bernie Worrell, who plays the main riff of this song.
@@PeckiePeck Him too!
Yeah, boyeeeeee!!! This is The National Funk!!!! That "monkey sound" is actually a percussion instrument called a guica. If you explore the funk band Cameo, you'll really get some exposure to the guica!!
Cuica also known as a Monkey Drum.
The original song is more than 12 minutes long. In your personal time listen to that version. The shorter version is dope but not like the original
Ive got the album and knee deep is 15. 30 sec long.
@@louisokeefe8307 exactly..the short version does this song no justice
15 minutes, 4 seconds. Um, listened to it a few times...😎 @Douglass is sho' nuff right: check out the long version for one of the best guitar solos ever.! (Mike "Kidd" Hampton)
Bring those 70s and 80s back. The Good ole days and the best music eras hands down. I enjoy watching the younger generations appreciate it and jam to it.
This is funk, more specifically p-funk, the greatest genre ever produced!
You know the entire song is about 15 minutes. Now I have to go listen to all of it...thanks for nothing 🤷🏿♂️
Glad you did this one!! My son is 6 and this is favorite song. He’s listened to it nearly everyday since he was 2 per request lol.
Long version 15 minutes and 14 seconds the guitar solo is so dam” funky! You’re doing a great job youngsters keep up the good work,

FUNK! PURE FUNK! UNCUT FUNK!
When I first heard Funkadelic in the late 70's I remember hearing them and not knowing what to make of them because their 7" singles I heard were straight up doo-wop r&b (like in the 50's), then they would do a psychedelic rock-blues songs but incorperate the doo-wop harmonies into it, then they did "Little Old Country Boy" (on the Osmium LP) which was almost a parody of country hillbilly music with a funky twist and then I heard The Mothership connection which incorporated all their past influences with a new disco type funky sound.
At the time even though they were funk, it was hard to pinpoint what they were before it went commercial because their influences covered such a wide spectrum but everything they did they did such a great job doing it. So much left field ideas which seem random but there's a method to their madness. Even their song "Atmosphere" which is just a funky organ tune with background comedy inside jokes was soo good and so entertaining to listen to.
They were totally crazy but they were equally so talented.
Don't overthink and second guess. It's funk and they put it in the name! A lot of artists have used George Clinton samples especially in the west.
I think P-Funk could be classified as Space-funk. Maybe not all their stuff, but they did a lot of really out-there music , that i reckon you can follow straight to Newcleus and all that early 80s alien craziness
The category is funk. Period. Pure, unadulterated, only the way Parliament would do it.
You need to listen to Cosmic Slop, in its entirety. The title track is my favourite p-funk track ( tied with Munchies For Your Love for best Bootsy Collins song ) but the whole album is just beautiful
the scatter is Phippe Wynn who was a lead singer of the Spinners, songs like Rubberband man and Sadie. He was known as the Thrill Sergeant
The funk, the WHOLE funk, and NOTHING BUT THE FUNK!
You are now a star child
Ha! YES he is.
Now every time I listen to this I think of good burger
Funkadelic is "Funk". They were genius. Some of them experimented in psychedelic substances to be free creatively, or that was the excuse used.
"Cosmic Slop" is the truth.
I use to drive my mother crazy with pfunk
Shout-out to the Funk World...check-out Con Funk Shun, Cameo, Slave, Barkays, The Time, The Gap Band, Lakeside, Zapp ft Roger Troutman n and Midnight.
good list! and one way, brass construction, bt express, slave, skyy, mandrill, sun, mantra, the meters, ohio players, cymande....
Aurra Sun platypus Isleys 70s jams
Nope We didn't sample in the 70s y'all sampling off us now
You need to listen to the extended version ! Parliament/ Funkadelic/ Parliament Funkadelic/ Funkadelic/ P-Funk, all the same. Long version could give u funk overdose, be careful !
Just so you know, Parlament, Funkadlic,Georg Clinton are all basically the same people, and they invented the category of Funk as we know it.
Love your internet, and enthusiasm! No turning back when I discovered them! Welcome!
Lastly,
George's metaphors and punchlines are better than cats rapping yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
There were some great Funk bands out at this time, but Parliament/Funkadelic were something different. Slave, Zapp, Fatback Band, GAP Band, Lakeside, Pleasure, just to name a few, were also awesome. Funk never dies, it multiplies!!!
Don’t forget Bootsie
it’s Funk, soul and Opera.
Just Jammin', check out the 15 minute long 12in version. It should be easy to find on UA-cam. That is the version that was played at parties in the 70's. That version is off the chain. Mostly instrumental where you just dance until your heart is content.
These were GREAT TIMES. Takes me wayyyy back bro! And yes, this is the essence of funk.
The whole Parliament-Funkadelic group calls itself, "P-funk".
A line in one of their songs goes, _"Make my funk the P-funk... I wants to get funked up."_
It’s definitely funk, but P-Funk is pretty much it’s own sub genre. This some has been sampled dozens of times. Another big hit that used it was “Kiss You Back” by Digital Underground - definitely worth a listen. The full length album version.
Parliment and Funkadelic were two difrent groups that George Clinton headed up. Collectively they were known as P-Funk. The genre is Funk. There an episode on George Climtom on TV One's Unsung.
Same group, hence, Parliamentfunkadelic, P- funk All-Stars.
One of the greatest songs of all time.!!!!!!
Maybe it's just my age but I continuously wonder why I am so amazed when people say they never heard music by Parliament-Funkadelic et al.
I only heard this P funk stuff when I was his age in the 90’s. Before that our local Cape Town radio stations and DJs would never play this kinda stuff. Way to stinky for radio I suppose!!🤣🤣
People heard it when it was sampled, but didn't know where the song came from. Like everyone knows 3 feet high and rising, but don't realize they like the song because of the sample.
”P-Funk” (Pure Funk and/or Parliament/Funkadelic together)
You done messed up u hooked now!
Thanks for acknowledging my post keep up the good work nice to see the new generation discovering the music that has been the soundtrack of my life
I don't think that anyone ever sampled this one. But the early Funkadelic: "Maggot Brain" I one of my favorites. It has a Santana vibe. The extended guitar solo by Eddie Hazel will change your life!
Correction: He stated DeLaSoul and he is correct.
Genre = Funkadelic
Monkey sounds = cuíca
Imagine not liking this music
Imagine...
The King of Funk. George Clinton. Atomic Dogg
Funkadelic is psychedelic funk
Digital Underground- Kiss me and I'll Kiss U Back
Funkadelic in the early to mid-70's was funky hard rock, whereas Parliament emphasized horns and keyboards, even recruiting away the horn section of James Brown's band by '74 or '75. But by '78 Funkadelic had started to sound more like Parliament. (And the two bands had a lot of common members and the same leader, George Clinton.)
Pure FUNK. from the Funk Master himself Dr. George Clinton.
Young brother, I would share the majority of popular HipHop tracks throughout the 80, 90, 00, and even today are samples from yesterday. This is R&B music with black cats playing Rock!!!
This is da Sh_______t!!! You just don't know how it was living in this time. Amazing!!!!
This can definitely be categorized as funk. But a lot of people consider Parliament-Funkadelic to be their own separate sub-genre of funk, called P-Funk. Also, the other sample you're hearing is Dre Day by Dr. Dre. One last thing, there's a 15-minute version of this song that is definitely worth digging into...
thank you for learning about the old school, where samples came from, etc.
youre the only young cat on YT to recognize the De La Soul song sampling this.
& yes - this isnt just funk, this is P-FUNK
Soooooooooo many sample these guys - all love.
Always loved this Jam!
Hence, Funkadelic.
Allow me to explain it this way to the younger generation, take the Wu Tang Clan for example...many artists came out of this camp. Parliament had divided its groups, Funkadelic is part of Parliament: Bootsy Collins, George Clinton and the Brides of Funkenstein are just a few groups completing the circle of Parliament Funkadelic
Jazz/Fusion drummer and arguably one of the top 5 drummers to walk earth Dennis Chambers was a teenager when he played on this track.
I do remember this song being over 15 minutes long so it WAS JUST GETTING GOOD...!!! This is Funk from way back in the day. My High School music. Heatwave, Earth Wind & Fire, Con Funk Shun, Bar Kays, Isley Brothers, Sun, Faze-O, (thinkin'), hmm... oh yeah, Slave, Pleasure, Lakeside, Vaughn and Mason, Fatback, .... (thinkin' some more), gotta remember I'm jogging my memory over 40 years ago so you can pretty much guess how old I am.....!! Oh yeah, Gap Band, Newcleus, Zapp and Roger, The Time, Rick James, ....... I could go on and on till the break of dawn and I didn't even Google this...!! If I do I can come up with more. I grew up on KSOL 107.7 in the San Francisco Bay Area, so this is all R&B, Soul, Funk. These groups ALL ACTUALLY PLAYED REAL INSTRUMENTS AND SANG....!!! Imagine that...!!! Cherish your Family and Friends and don't take life for granted as 40 years will come QUICKER THAN YOU'LL EVER IMAGINE..... God Bless young Man
the monkey sound in background is a brazillian instrument called the cuica, its like a drum with a strick inside of it that you rub... you ever move your straw up and down inside your sonic cup?
Cool!
Definitely Funk. They played their instruments. Horns, guitars, keyboards, drums. Check out a live performance.
And the dance floor was always jamming. Women were fine as 🤬. Those were some good daze
George Clinton is the master of FUNK! He created Parliament and Funkadelic as single groups, but it was the same group of people. It is FUNK! There were many artist that he turned into their own groups, ie, Bootsy's Rubberband, Parlet, The Brides of Funkenstein and several more groups. George was a genius.
and the drums was played by BOOTSY COLLINS check him out Too
Parliament and Funkadelic are the Same, ITS PURE FUNK YOUNG BRO, You’re Exactly Right
pfunk is the dna for hip hop!! welcome to the mothership my young 1, you are just scratching the surface good place to start come on and take a ride free your mind and your ass will follow you got that do do because pfunk IS THE SHIT fly on
This is the short version. The entire length is about 17 mins. A long guitar solo. The song just goes on and on. 😄
It’s Funk young blood…Absolutely love your voice…They all sampled our error 💕
P funk is what its called. They're all one big happy family parliament and Funkadelic.. You must listen to one nation under a groove its the ish. Thanx for keeping this music alive. So much good music theyoungsters are missing out on.
The "Quica'" is that Monkey sounding instrument played by Larry Fratangelo'. This sound is the basis for many Hip Hop records.
No samples, computers, just TAPEd musicians and singers with lots of people clapping hands in the Studio.
I was one of the people there. This is your GrandPa's shizzzznittt (lol). People danced at the club back then.
Just to be clear, Funk preceded and superceded Disco
The other samples you’re hearing is Snoop Dogg “What’s My Name” and 2Pac “U Can’t C Me” just to name a couple.
**Edit**
I see you picked up on it near the end! You got a sharp ear, young brotha! Can’t wait til you get to the ones I requested on StreamLabz!
This is pure 100 percent Funk. I always thought of it as Funk Opera.
Just Jammin check out the Kneedeep Acapella version on youtube

EPMD also sampled this for 'Gold Digger'.
Parliament and Funkadelic are the same band under different record labels...
You are the only one to give the correct answer. Thanks for letting the young brother know !
You need to hear the 15 minute version!
This is the Mothership Connection P-Funk
It’s *P-FUNK* Youngster. Enjoy your journey into the land of *FUNK!!*
The Funk,, The Whole Funk, And Nothing But The Funk...
Now this is making music. Creativity to the nth degree.
Half funk and half phycodelic
Classic song from good burger
Junie Morrison wrote the music and playing the keyboards. Bootsy is playing drums
P-FUNK
It is Funk music 💯
Disco is way different lol..
I FINALLY found out the name of this song is KNEE DEEP not "Freak Of The Week", which is a different song on another album!
Not just knee deep ... she was Tow-tall-EE deep; when she did the freak with me.
Thank you for checking them out 😁
My pleasure!
Funk, funk, funk. "On the one" means... bass and drum beats start on the first count of each bar. FYI
Classic Funk.. You would like "Holy Ghost".. That song is insane
PURE PHUNK!!!!
