- Hi! Is there a restoration of an unknown instrument or device today? No one could tell what it was? Obviously, during the restoration process, I realized that the steel of the component parts is good, but for what? The condition of the object is average, the handle is broken, there is a lot of rust, the mechanism does not work. I'm starting the restoration.
The first thing I did for a long time was to disassemble the device (tool) into parts, put it in a rust remover, cleaned and treated with an iron brush. Some parts are sandpaper from 400-600 grit.
I carved a new handle out of hornbeam wood, soaked it with beeswax and oil. I wanted to do a test, but how? Likewise, I do not know what it is. Please share this video.

I spent a good five minutes frieandily ribbing him _before_ allowing him to explain me why he thought it was actually ritual. (Spoiler: it might have been a ritual, "beautified", copy of a standard knife - but that wouldn't spare him of the joke!)

@@ScrewsAndToolsLooks, like it is a tool for wire. A clamp, to pull it into a mashine under tension. Or to shape a round wire into a square form. This tiny hook thing should give you the diameter. Clamp the wire at a wish lenght to the workbench, open the tool, lay the wire inside near the tool, close it firmly and pull back. You may use both hands on the handle, or put them on the steel parts left and right. It is just a guess, may it has something to do with wire, or small steal bands.
That’s the official motto of Hi Point owners.

I think it is an adjustable saw setting tool for large circular and even small saws. Of course that is just a guess--

That was my first thought, it does somewhat resemble the tool used for cutting straps from a hide. However where the blade would go is instead a strange little hook which *might* be the holder for a blade but the angle would not be correct. Also, it is very heavy and strong- if it’s intended for cutting strips from animal hide the animal would have to a dinosaur or something and it doesn’t look old enough for cutting dinosaur hides.😊
My second guess is that it’s a kind of adjustable jig or pattern used to set up some sort of machine to make a specialized part. It looks to have fairly precisely ground and squared surfaces at exact right angles and dimensions, just what would be needed for tooling accuracy. It would have to have been made in-house in a factory for that specific job because standardized commercial tools for that kind of work just don’t exist, which would explain why it has only cryptic number markings and no brand on it. But what kind of machine, multi axis mill? I would run it by an old master machinist and ask them if they recognize it.

That looks like a casting mould for needles used in the textile trade many years ago...The needles were plased in the mould & molten lead poured into the top...If not it looks very similar

Доброго времени суток, Алекс! Как всегда отличная работа на 5+! Никогда не встречал такую штуку. Даже не представляю что это, может держак для полотна, может формовка для ключей или форма для отливки, а может ещё что... Одно понятно вешь времён СССР. Цифры - это код изделия в чертежах, однозначно. Можно попробовать по фото поискать в Яндексе или в Гугле, если там есть такой поиск (в Яндексе он есть). Я пробовал искать, но картинка на скриншоте не совсем удачная получилась, ничего похожего найти не удалось... Надо сделать фото самого инструмента и попробовать поискать. Если интересен такой вариант выяснить что это - желаю удачи в поиске! Возможно получится узнать что это.

Это предположительно. Точно такую штуку давно я видел в ювелирной мастерской на полке ,ювелир был пожилой еврей.

У меня с Chat GPT есть предположение, что это специалный зажим для работы с кожей или мелкими деталями. А цифры на частях могут указывать на то, что либо это серийные номера деталей. Либо они сделаны из разных сплавов и могут иметь разные свойства. Но это всего лиш предположение!

@@ScrewsAndTools The little indentations on the main body of the tool look like the cutting parts on a wire cutter. Is the big screw a clamp or the thing around which wire is bent when the tool is closed? I think the action of opening and closing the tool is the key to what it does. I'm sure you'll figure it out!

It is obviously a lateral clamp for a zelikatron jig.
My best guess is that this is a part of a complex device. It's hard to determine what something is if it is incomplete. That may be why you are unable to determine what it is.

I'm on an Android tablet and all the non-English comments have a little line under them that says "Translate to English". Makes it nice to read comments in other languages. Not sure of the accuracy but they mostly make sense.

I wonder if it is for bending wire into a specific shape. Find a wire the correct size and put the tool into a vice and tighten until you feel the part has no more give. Similar to carburetor linkage on small engines.
On the restored item:
If the bolt with knurled head nut is loosened, can the part with the small metal handle swing open? What does this look like?
I suspect this is a mould for casting "something" out of a lead/tin/antimony alloy.
I *think* that in the textile industry, the latch needles used in knitting machines need to be heavy, so the steel hook is placed into a mould, and some lead (or similar metal) cast around it, to make the final part. This might be a mould for that.
