Felt can take the rain and snow no problem but I like to do it to make water bead off the hat. If it doesn’t get wet much it doesn’t need drying much. It just makes caring for the hat easier.
My hat is an Akubra camp draft , imperial rabbit fur felt . It got it drenched in a down pour and my head was dry as a bone
