My Fiat 500 ABARTH Shudder Is FINALLY Fixed *And It Was SUPER EASY*

- If at first you don't succeed, try, try again. That's been the motto as I chased down problems with my cheap Fiat 500 Abarth. From worn out motor mounts and installing better coil packs to finally fixing it for good today. Replacing the inner and outer passenger side CV axles cleared up the rest of the vibration under boost. All you need is 36MM, 17MM, 15MM and 10MM sockets, an impact, and some VERY expensive CV axles from your local Mopar parts counter.

I know this is an older video but I just wanted to say thanks for the Abarth videos. Because of you and Tyler I went out and bought myself the “cheapest Abarth 500” and did the CV and all new struts and springs and many other jobs and your videos really helped me with this car.
Did you rebuild the CV's or did you buy new ones?
I thought the Cody guy with the Ram truck was Zach.... until he blinked.
JR, I could be wrong but, I believe that the CV boot should be filled with bearing grease as the grease in the roller bearings gets warm and seeps out while driving. I’ve replaced one or two of these in my seventy years and never had one fail when placing extra grease in the boot. I could be wrong but I’ve never had a replacement fail in thirty years. No criticism intended...
Your knowledge of cars never ceases to amaze me.
Kind of figured it was the passenger axle. Good job on finding the issue. You need to replace the battery. These cars are super sensitive to battery voltage. That is why you are getting some of those faults. Keep up the good work JR
Zach looked like a scared baby dear while you were driving
For a second there, I thought JR had the Jets Coach in the car
I think it's the light on the camera because JR had a bit of that wide eyed look when he was doing his closing thing in the dark.
He always reminds me of Sergei the Meerkat in the British comparethemarket.com insurance commercials... always the downtrodden underling.
Scared of never driving it again 😂
Ok, I admit, I've just ordered a passenger side CV for my Mazda 3 2008. It had this vibration for a long time and I was pushing away doing the repair. Looking forward going at any speed without vibration!
Remove the tierod end and ball joint, not the strut bolts...then you don't have to worry about alignment
have my doubts this car has any adjustments in the camber ,
Moody DF is correct.
It's funny, I'm over here with 3 vehicles and thinking to my self, time to sell the Mini. And then there is JR with no job and 15 cars most of which still need work. Making me feel like a peasant!
You should always do wheel studs by hand with a torque wrench. You can crack wheels the way you did it. And don't forget to retorque to spec after 100 miles.
I'm several hours in and transpires it wasn't super easy on a 12 year old UK car lol. Track rod end nut was just spinning the ball joint thread so I've had to cut the nut off, and weighing up whether I have to replace the TRE (which won't come off easily, I'm sure).
Fiat manual says 10nm for the 3 bolts on the offside shaft (the one you said was only ratchet tight - so correct).
Lots of aftermarket cv axles available now .... just beware there is a good chance the part number ordered doesnt match the right part (a screw up in the early parts listings) - so use the factory sticker on the original axle if still there, for the original number to x-ref. Good luck!
Shmee is the type of guy to walk into a lady’s restroom by misteak and say hi guys I’m shmee 😂
Some american guy called him sheemee.
- Hey, look!
It's that guy from youtube - sheemee !
Dude... great video series on 500 Abarth. You scored a great deal on it. CVs are common problem on this car... but if willing to fix, can score a great deal on used market.
I bet Zach's real happy to have his car back
TPMS code is easy to fix. It's just the batteries on the transmitters have died. It's like $10 per wheel to have it replaced. BTW would you be interested in a 2008 Aveo cheap? I'm just tired of working on it. Would rather have an early 90's Honda with a manual.
Glad it’s finally fixed!!! Good work.
Glad you got to run the dragons tail...most fun I ever had on that road was a all wheel steer prelude...like riding a roller coaster...318 curves in 11 miles...and the scenery at the end is breathtaking...if you go...and I recommend you do if you love bikes and sports cars...check out Joyce kimar forrest and maple springs overlook...you can see 10 layers of mountains from the overlook in a panoramic view.
Hey! I was born and grew up in the Flintstone Era. We all had arms the size of thighs from all the manual wrenching. Show some respect to the ancient.
Ok boomer
I am doing this now to my Abarth! Can't wait to get it back.
Glad to see you investing some of that tool money in the reader. Absolutely love being able to read wiring diagrams in the vehicle.
Okay JR, on your recomendation I just bought the Autel scan tool! Hope it works as well for me as it does for you. Merry Christmas to me!! And all of you, of course!!!!!
You can buy the tripod joints for £30 from a Volvo c30 and Ford Transit CV boots fit the inner CV joints ! I rebuilt my shafts 4 times now!
CV=constant velocity axle, in case you did not know.
I didn't, I had to look it up. JR, please say the meanings of the acronyms at first, not everyone already knows.
did a mate of mines it had the same shake i bought the tri lobe from my local parts store for £15. job done!
Did that cv get some grease? It looks like you shoved it in dry!!! What would Amberghini say???
What happened to getting the factory wheels for the scion?
If I'm not mistaken most fiat 500s here in Europe at least are start stop and use EFB batteries which tend to be quite fussy when the start getting low
The wonderful Fiat Fartbox. Don't you just love it. 😁 Hundreds here in the UK mainly used as doorstops lol.
trainmanbob 100 quid you drive a Metro grandpa
I think the 500s are fun tiny cars
I hope you filled the inner joint with plenty of grease, otherwise the joint will only last about 100 miles. I like to assemble out of car, because it’s easier to put lube in inner housing while vertical, sliding joint down, then banding boot.
I'd be really interested in seeing how that Autel scanner interacts with the E39.
Itll blue screen
If I got to change out the CV axles with Watch JR Goes I would pack up the Hash Pipe with Rocky and get all schmoked up.
Thanks for the video. What are the part numbers for the axles? I look online and they say discontinued. I need the passenger side as well, boot is torn so I need to replace. Thanks.
the Sea Ray videos did so well you should do more boats.
John, the type of guy to reuse axle nuts.
Middle of the night not first. I'll have to watch this tomorrow.
Great to see you using the new toy! Check it out at 7:55 into the video. Great work JR and excited to see your future projects, there are many more features your Autel MX808 will provide.
What happened to Amberginni ?
thinking the same thing, he still has her Tracker.
Women are only loyal as their options.
She was in the last video
I told you before you started throwing parts at the engine that 9 times out of 10 shudder is transmission related. I guess sometimes I just get lucky.
Sometimes it's from a transmission flash
Can that Autel MX808 also do the PROXI alignment to repair the blinking odometer every time you change a module (such as the radio)?
Hi JR, I am still in the hospital and I watch you next time, need PA plate, my son bought a lot of plates for the bear cave garage, and I got plenty of PA for some reason, I will make a video when I get out of this hospital about it!
keep hearing negatives on Fiats. looking at the Abarth to replace my '15 Cherokee (4cyl) to use to commute to work (57 miles one way). 1. thoughts on long term/high mileage reliability 2. thoughts on using it for pretty long work commutes ?
Have 140k miles on my 13 Abarth, running strong with larger ported turbo etc
Where did you get those cv shafts ? Im looking everywhere online but can't find them. Is it the same for the 2009 abarth 500 ?
I hope Milwaukee will sponsor you. You have done good placement and everything works.
DarthSmartt I bought the same high-torque impact driver from Milwaukee because of this channel. (and because it was on sale for Black Friday for only $200 at Home Depot.)
ahhh the way you tighten the nuts back on the wheel urks me, unless its a torque adjustable power tool
Agreed. 3 uggas is not a torque measurement. My experience with European cars says use a torque wrench and recheck after 100 miles, MAX.
I recommend using a low traction tire like the Pirelli P4. Less stress on the weak drivetrain. The MX-5 is more of a daily driver- these Fiats are more of a weekend only car for fewer miles per year.
Oh, really? LMAO. Do you own one? Many people with 150k+ on their Abarths. Just take care of the fucking thing, like any car. Weak drivetrain? Not sure if serious. For under 5k, you can build a pretty quick daily driver that's more fun than anything on the road. You're fake news, fuck face.
@@onlyfoolriding8223 Good to see you weren't a total prick to him.
So, even though the shudder was on the pass. side, don't you think you should replace the axles on the driver's side? I mean it's like doing the brakes: if you do one side, you MUST do the other. But that's just me.
And just HOW FAST did you have that pocket rocket going? Zach looked like he'd have been better off hitchhiking home. :)
I was gonna say the same thing.
What was the part number for the CV and Axles?
$490? At least it comes with a fReE sCrEeN pRoTeCtOr!
Thats my favorite car you own..
Milwaukee Tool, better start paying attention, lol, cheers!
Scotty is the GRANDFATHER OF THE CAR COMMUNITY
I've looked at that scanner a few times, I just can't stomach spending 500 dollars on a scanner when I have several working scanners, I'd love to have a scanner that can scan and clear TPMS and air bag lights though, that's the one thing I'm missing, I can do everything else but that's a lot of trips to Firestone at 25 dollars a pop.
Why do I feel like he's always rushing, maybe it's all the liquid ice he drinks 🙄
Let's crowd fund for some impact sockets!!
Right?! Dude needs to at least hit up the Hazard Fraught for some throwaways, js...
They might not go in the recesses in the wheels. Don’t lose your thin six points
@@sammolloy1 I can certainly agree with that I have a 1/2" Snapon air ratchet with a LOT of snot and had exploded chrome sockets with ease. Yet again prob should have used torq sticks
I am no mechanic but is it customary to grease the new shaft before putting it back??
Every car ever :
Zach - "Better than my Subaru."
Stick a screwdriver inside the center of the rotor and wedge it against the caliper bracket to keep the hub from turning.
By abarth only shakes when I accelerate around 40-60mph …. Motor mounts ? Or cv ? Doesn’t make when noise when turning wheel tho …
Seems like the alternator is failing
Seems like you could get rid of the cat error by dropping a resistor in someplace
JR has a grease-grey thumb? Seems to have the feel for these machines. I guarantee this job would have taken me a weekend, and four trips to the parts store.
Why not put an O2 Spacer on the O2 Sensor on the downpipe so no more check engine?
Nick Martinez A spacer works on the aftercat sensor but that one runs the computer so get a new one but leave it alone
@@sammolloy1 you can run a spacer on the post cat sensor no problem, its the one that is throwing the code. You dont run it on the pre-cat sensor, which is what determines A/F Ratio, EGT, ect.
Nick Martinez Yes. Will an aftercat spacer work if there is no cat at all?
sammolloy1 absolutely, that’s what they are for.
Kool vid, my son has 2013 pop.. do you know if this cars have an external fuel filter?
If your boots have failed and just need replacing , They can be ordered from GKN Lobro.
The alternator is just about dead. It should be charging around 14.2-.6 even with a dead battery . 12.6 v is not enough to run AC , lights, heated seats ect...The longer you wait to change it the more damage the battery will incur . Very common for a alt to die shorty after a battery is replaced and vice versa
Please tell me you put grease in the cup before fitting the outer drive shaft
Looks like he didn't.
homeboy is driving a total of 16 hours for some old audi rims the cost of gas alone isn't worth the cost of the rims guess one mans junk is another mans treasure
john cushman not the brightest bulb clearly. Gas+wear+time. Easier to ship and much cheaper. They were curbed to hell too.
Some times it is about the journey to the rims not the rims themselves... --- master kongfu 🐼
Hi! Just a quick question. How did you tighten te CV boot CLAMP? Mine keeps loosening and mess all the underbody with grease.. seems impossible to tighten it with te CV joint in the car. :(
Zack looked all tweaked out and coked out! Lmfknao Hahaha
Zack.... please BLINK at some point......
😂
Wonder if that's a factory defect, how would one check to see if it's bad besides the shuddering.
Find out the resistance in the O2 sensor and put a resistor in the plug. It will tell the pcm the sensor is working correctly
Doesnt work that way. O2 will fluctuate up and down between .1 and .9 volts.
.1=lean
.9=rich
It will keep the light off...
@@nelsonmcclure141 No. The computer needs to see constant switching from rich to lean. Please refer to my previous reply.
This dude is cool make sure everyone gives him more thumbs up and more subscribers
Please help.. My Fiat 500 Pop is vibrating only at 40mph & is fine at 50mph .. Absolutely driving me crazy .. New tires, alignment, new shocks, motor mount replaces ..
TPMS codes telling you to check the tire pressure on the four wheels. After checking the pressure on the four wheels and there still is a problem, could a wheel or wheels possibly need new batterie(s) for the TPMS or do they use the ABS system for TPMS?
Didn’t know these had lsd thought it was ttc ( tourque transfer control)
I feel like they complicated the cv design. My MKIV GTI had 1 whole assembly for the cv shaft and it didn’t actually take too much to do it if you know how. 😂 But that wasn’t a terrible job either.
What a dainty little car.
Bring the scanner along when you purchase another used car to see what you are in for.....
Can you help what are the part number for driver and passenger cv axle or are they both the same
If I recall by memory... This isn't Tyler's Abarth. LOL.
I don’t remember if you mentioned it but do you know if it has any lowering springs on it?
Google/youtube spark plug non fouler p0420 and you should find a guide to get rid of that catalytic converter code for around $4.
yo, did you not end up putting any grease on? is it not necessary?
I want to buy one
Where can I find OEM parts ?
I want to se the price of them.
How much would you pay for a car that was missing vital components? A guy near me is trying to sell his Accord, but someone stole the battery, spark plug wires, and HVAC controls. It is entirely possible there are other missing parts.
That's a $300-500 if it's the early 2000s era car I'm imagining. You'll be in it $150-200 before it drives, best case 🍻
@@WatchJRGo I mostly expect to try to sell parts and have the rest hauled off, but if I can get it running first then I know which parts are good and I do not need to tow it. I have a compatible Accord.
Whatever happened to the Geo Tracker? Did you get it finished?
Hoovie needs to hire you, for car work ;)
How many miles on the car when unchanged your cv?
Beard guy doesn't blink.
Milwaukee powertools rock
What's the model for the milwaukee impact wrench you use, JR?
Got to get Milwaukee to sponsor you
14.4 should be your running voltage, 12.6 should be your voltage with the engine off. your voltage is stupid low
You are asking why parts are so expensive while working on a Feeble Italian Attempt at Transportation?
Bennet Fox what are you? A furry?
Well made parts ain't cheap
Milwaukee...not a sponsor...but, OH, you SHOULD BE!
Where did you get the CV axles from?
Super simple CV half shaft replacement? Later he said if you have a lift. Everything is easier with the correct tools and equipment.
