I bought my '12, USA FIAT 500 from a used car dealer in 2020. It had 124,300 miles on the Multiair engine. Manual transmission. One right away issue was the hatch wiring. I fixed all the chafed & broken wires best I could & left it alone. I don't use any of (turn them on) the items the wires supply electricity to (wiper or window def.). I put on a universal license plate light & all is well there. My front shocks are exposed as in this video but rust free. I'll give 'em more scrutiny after this video, put some grease on 'em. My brake/clutch cylinders haven't given me any problems & doesn't leak. The pass. side door handle is tight as can be, very little play in it. The driver's side has a little more play in it but is not broken at all. My instrument panel will flash on & off a little bit here & there (I've read that each year has different problems) upon start up (more with cold weather) but works normally after that. I'm in my 4th year of owning the 500, nothing has really gone wrong, & I'm replacing all the wear & tear items as I roll along.
Very informative guide. Just purchased a 2012 1.2 pop in red for my daughter. Looks like it had the speedo problem very early on in its life after going through receipts. Glad its done. This one has also had a new rear axle as rusty cups had previously failed an MOT. Again, pleased seller had this work done.
Not faults, features! Seriously, thanks for this video, even though it's a few years old. Just bought a '13 Abarth, and this inspires some preventative maintenance.
This video got me hooked, a chap who is honest and tells you what you need to know, many thanks, since this video I’ve just started watching as many videos of LOVE500 as I can!
Great advise ! - I checked the wifes '65' reg car (23k miles) and the drain rubbers were blocked with rubbish.! Already lubricated the door handles to stop them seizing hopefully. 👍👍
thanks, bought a 2013 fiat 500 that had hill start, stuck in 2nd gear, (automatic), red hood light, see dealer to check engine, among many faults. After clearing faults, they came back. I pulled all plugs under battery, ECU, and others, cleaned all grounds I could find. The car seems to be fixed after 6 months of guessing, thanks again.
Great informative video. Just been to look at a 10 year old Twin Air Plus model. Some of the common issues have been done (front shocks replaced and nuts now covered in grease rather than caps, and rear hatch wiring been repaired). A smashing little runaround car so bought it on the spot thanks to your info 👍
Great video. Gives anybody thinking of buying one a heads up on some of the more common faults too look out for. I have seen the corroded nuts on top of the struts on quite a few modern cars. Makes a relatively easy job into a real pain in the --se. Wasnt aware of the top covers thats a good idea thanks for sharing. Rich
I bought an Abarth with 37000 miles for $5000. Not a problem ever. Now has 79k miles and 3 years later. Much better than the two 128's I owned years ago.
My wifes larger 500L model also had bare top strut mountings, bit more of a faf to get to,but I managed to coat them with spray grease. But it was a very reliable car.Miss it very much!
Most of those serious faults .... I’ve had to fix myself.. including the coil pack! And all in under a year of owning the car !! It’s no wonder my knowledge has expanded... I had no choice 😂 I got seriously fleased with my car .. if only this video had existed then! I’m pretty sure this will help many many potential 500 owners to swerve the lemons!
Awesome Vid, helped me fix the back of my fiat 500c truck wouldn't open and rear license plate was off, took off electrical black cover on left in canada, and showed a wire split i added some copper jumper and voila good as new, also the key fob wouldn't work to open trunk :) thanks again
Just found both of those drain holes completely blocked on a 17 plate Abarth with standing water in the tray around them. The only reason I happened to notice that was because my front windscreen wipers stopped working yesterday and, when I removed the scuttle panel to access the wiper motor, I noticed the standing water in there. I also had the broken rear hatch wiring issue, which I fixed a couple of months ago. The car also had a lambda sensor fail about a year ago.
Hi Paul as usual Great, informative advise, your general content and with these common issues with our 500s🙄 The one you mentioned about checking the oil cap, its not always necessarily a head gasket issue ,these cars can suffer from engine condensation build up in the cold of winter with the sudden stop start temperature changes can cause the gunk build up you mentioned, my abarth does or at least did as we recently moved and my car is garaged now☺ so its clear now as its sheltered. I think headgasket failure leans more towards overheating on a test drive, heater not getting hot, coolant in the oil or on the dipstick, oil mixed in coolant expansion tank, an a very excessive build up of emulsified oil and coolant, also worth checking the breather system pcv valve for build up of gunk or for internal rust corrosion if so replace it Another on the abarth, sticking or seized calliper slider pins particularly the rear, this causes foot, hand brake imbalance, uneven pad wear, the inner pad can stick also scoring on the disc's and in worse case the piston can also seize, all the callipers slider pins need to be checked annually to prevent this and unnecessary expense of replacement! Premature underside rust is another, rub down with wire brush or drill attachment then apply direct to rust metal paint will help slow the rust process down and always looks good come mot time Also these cars are very sensitive to the slightest voltage drop so of the battery is a bit dicky it will throw up all sorts of electrical warning issues when all it needs is a new battery which should always be your 1st port of call before panicking and delving deep as this will generally cure the issues ,I'm sure you know yourself are aware of some of these I've mentioned but hopefully will help some of your subscribers ! if I think of any others I'll add them . 🙂👍
Really really appreciate you for this video and your passion for these vehicles I'm super new to the scene and about to purchase one of these cars. this information is vital for anyone searching the second hand market for a 500 thank you.
Hey. Great video! My Fiat 500 Pop only starts second time and the remote key doesn't work well despite changing the battery, any idea what's going on? I really want to get rid of the car, but no one will buy it with this issue.
Thanks for the 500 advice my daughter has just bought an 2011 turbo twin air done 78,000 mint cond fsh and sailed through mot hopefully it’s a goodun 👍
I'm looking to purchase a 1015, 500 that's called a 1956 Edition. I'm really very glad I saw this video about the car before I made the purchase. Great video and very educational! I appreciate it very much! So hopefully my purchase will go well. I just love these little cars! Zoom zoom zoom!
Thanks for all this. I am a new Fiat owner, not a new car just new to this brand. I bought it to tow behind my Class B camper. It is light and they make a lot of equipment for that purpose. I live in Oklahoma so the water problem you have over there will not be a factor here. Hot & dry. One problem we have with any car is headlight cover deterioration, solar radiation causes them to cloud up. I have been sanding them with 600 grit WD paper then spraying on a layer of clear coat. Lasts for years. Your video gives me information on what to watch for. I found a 2012 W/ 94K miles that is in very good shape and it is white, white is important here. Again, thanks.
Subscribed! Just bought a 62 plate Street edition for my daughter. Very detailed explanation of the common issues. Will be checking all the things you mentioned👍
Great video - excellent! The clutch pipe connector sits on the chassis rail next to the nearside front strut. Its position is so exposed the brass push-fit becomes impacted with crud/salt and they can split! Replaced the master and slave together last year (10 plate). Passenger door handle done, and rear tailgate wiring harness had to be fettled too. Rear taligate release handle suffers from water ingress and the whole chrome strip incorporating the numbef plate lights needs to be changed. Rear axle spring cups are corroding but not an MoT failure.....YET. Keep up the great work on the videos.
Hi Paul. Great video, really helpful. One thing you didn't mention is I see lots of 500s with mot advisories of rusty rear axles or rear spring carriers. I would like to treat mine to prevent this as some rust is starting. I've thought of coating the axle and spring bases in grease or waxoyl. What do you think 🤔
Some people paint them. Use a wire brush or wire brush on a drill to remove the surface rust and any good quality treatment will to the job. I’ve had them myself.
Yes, great video. Have problem with tailgate latch and wiring. Can sort wiring but Any recommendations on where to get a new latch mechanism? A lot on eBay but wondering if you had any suggestions? 👍
👍👍 Thanks, I gotta fix one of those damn wiring looms... Partners car has the odd electrics on the boot... Will be checking the rest of these bits as I seem to be default repair person! Thanks for great video.
Hi Paul, Great vid as always. i am finding that on most of the older Fiat 500s 2008 /2011 the rear axel rusts quite a lot and some times rots. Have you come across this yet?.
Not completely rotten, but project dirt was quite bad. Still a good couple of years out of it hopefully but yes, quite common on the older ones. Luckily not an expensive job to replace.
Hiya Paul Love the channel. I'm subbed and followed for a while and it's helped me with my partners car a lot. Wonder if you have ever replaced the resistor which gives the cabin fan speeds ? Hers only works on highest setting and I'm told this is also a common fault. One of your wonderful simple clear videos would make me a fan for life.
@Love500 I can see the bloody thing, but it's right behind the steering column. I'm not a confident enough mechanic to disengage the column. Was hoping there was a clever expert trick.
Great vid. I have a 2015 convertible. Great car and very easy to work on. I live in the desert so many of the issues for corosion , struts, door handles breaking, airbag ecm, are non issues for me. Love it.
yor information videos ,are by far the best, love 500.,have you any videos on how i cant get reverse gear?,its a 2008 manual 500....just discovered your video just now,,will have a look at your other ones today.!!thanks ,well done you.....ian
We LOVE our 2016 Fiat 500 Lounge. Just so much more character than anything else in its class. It doesn't give us any trouble at all. I don't know why they got a bad rep in America. Maybe the U.S ones came from a different factory. Bu they're such a fun car.
@@Love500 Ah I see. I've just now being watching youtube videos on it and immediatly noticed those from the U.S were suggesting dubious reliabilty. Which I found strange. Some of them were quite harsh on this car. So, without wanting to insult Mexico, maybe that's the reason? I love our 500 so much (we bought it for our teen daughter's first car) that I'm thinking of getting an Abarth for myself :-) The auto transmission is a bit funky. I change the gears in ours myself, and I can do it smoother than the auto can. So I'm looking forward to trying the manual. (Great video by the way..thank you for sharing your knowledge)
Amazing video, thanks a lot! I wonder if Fiat fixes this faults in new versions or not? By the way, I am planning to buy a 500 automatic, do you know any problem specific to automatic? Do you recommend it?
If you specifically want an automatic I would get a different car as they are a robotised manual and have terrible problems which cost a fortune to repair.
@@fatihbulut9567 there are plenty of people out there with perfectly good ones but it’s very very common that it’ll jump out of gear or not go into gear. Oil seals fail. I wouldn’t have one.
ive just subscribed.your spot on with the faults,i just bought my first 500 this year .a 2009 1.2 sport,i hope its got the red engine thats reliable like you said in vid.learnt so much just watching this first vid, glad to have found you.keith from cambridge.
Hi great video thanks. Could you please advise me on my air conditioning its not working. There's power to the main fuses box but nothing to the compressor, clutch doesn't spin when turned on, all fuses are good . Been re gassed all ok holding pressure I'm starting to think the engine might have to come out to check the wiring harness. 2016 my 1.2cc 69bhp mega slow lol Any advice please Jason.
Thanks . Just bought got a nice F500 for my daughter - think price was ok - but I should have watched your video first :-) Both the suspension and lights were points of bargain I realize now..
great video thanks so much. buying my first 2013 1.4 lounge tomorrow, so great tips on what to look for, will make sure to do some checks before signing on the dotted line. look forward to seeing all your useful tips in the future. vehicle has high mileage 158 000km would you suggest changing the cambelt if they do not have the service history showing that it was done?
Absolutely. One good thing about a breaking belt on a 1.2 is it isn’t destructive so doesn’t actually damage anything. I’m not sure that is the case with the 1.4. Definitely change it if it hasn’t been done.
Thanks for the great information and detailed video! We are looking at a 2014 500 with 65K miles in California for $6,500. Do you think this is a good buy? Thanks!
Great vid thanks! I have the issue of the dim lights accompanying indicating right (engine, abs, temp), they all go out once the indicator is cancelled. Would that be a new speedo, or is it possibly the rear hatch wiring?
Very informative video. Ive a 2015 fiat 500 7 seater. Recently ive noticed a whistling noise while driving. Its more prominent when the engine is warm from driving throughout the day rather than first thing in the morning. Has anyone else had this problem?
Fantastic video. Just wondered if you had done on on the model history of the Fiat 500? Facelifts, what options are most popular? What break? Wha5 colours to buy thar sell best and for what prices? The experts history lesson on the fiat 500.
I've been a subscriber for a while and always enjoy your videos. Wondered if I could ask a question please. My daughter's 500 1.2 Lounge is leaking washer fluid under the passenger sill cover. Do you know where I can buy a repair kit for the hard plastic corrugated pipe from. Thanks David
All you need is a joint. If you look at my project Winnie video where I replaced the hatch wiring I have joined it there where i cut it as part of the loom.
Very interesting video. My daughters 2015 abs and oil warning light come on when she is indicating right (only) and hazards. I suspect that its the speedo after watching your video. Subscribed. Where abouts are you based ?
Do you know if you can buy the headlight repair kits for the ford ka mk2 same car more or less I mess with them a lot and the head lights are a big issue same as the 500 cheers Den?
Send the dash off to ecu testing and get life time warrenty after .. or buy a second hand dash pay to have it all reset and that can fail being second hand .. I send all mine away .. and have not had to worry about resetting programming and had them done under warranty also without hassle ... it’s worth the refurb ...
@@Love500 ecu testing ... I had one go back 3 times 🤦🏼♂️🤦🏼♂️over a two year span cos it failed differently each time flashing a different tail light .. first time engine then it was temp then I think it was fading in the handbrake and abs light ... I don’t know what they replaced each time but they warrenty the entire dash without hassle everytime .. luckily customer could go without the car each time ... but I gave them the option of brand new or this .. the others have been fine since first repair ...
That was a good video Paul Thanks. Have a question, That do you do for the car insurance on the cars that you repair on this channel. What type on insurance policy you have that lets you have a number of new cars, in one week then gone the next.
I have four separate policies. One for my own car, one for the Abarth and then two separate policies for the two I’m working on. When I sell one I swap the policy to the new one.
Hi, great videos, just bought a 2015 lounge for my daughter, B&M unit not working, seen your video on how to get to it, but do i need to replace it with a 500 unit, or will any Fiat B&M unit work?
Hi Paul! Sending you this from Athens Greece. I’m ready to buy a 2009 semi automatic. People here are strongly recommending to avoid this gearbox because I will have problems again and again. Could you please give me your advice? Thank you!
They can be troublesome and expensive to repair. I have one at the moment which is fine. I know a couple of people that have them with high miles which run completely fine. Get a warranty if you can.
@@Love500 thank you very very much! Unfortunately the one I was planning to buy does not come with a warranty. But it’s so damn nice… honestly I don’t know what to do.. I was literally on my way to give the money to the lady! Everything else was fine! It had the gearbox serviced as per the mechanic I went to… thank you very much for your time and help though Paul!!! I wish I could buy one from you but we are driving at the wrong side of the road as you know 😉😉😉
Great channel very informative I was just wondering if you’d ever come across a problem Fiat 500 on a 13 Reg after timing belt and service not sure if it’s a coincidence or not driving normally loss of engine power engine management light flashing turn the key off turn it back on back to normal no codes stored ? Be grateful for any advice
I would be very surprised if there wasn't a code stored somewhere. What are you using to read codes? I would expect MultiECUScan to show something as an intermittent fault. It's a possibility your cambelt is a tooth out, but I don't think that would be intermittent. If it was 180 degrees out, the car wouldn't start. It's probably more likely something has been disturbed and not plugged back in properly during the cambelt change. I would recommend MES for diagnostics rather than a generic scanner. Even a quality one wouldn't be as comprehensive as MES.
@@Love500 Thanks for the advice I’m just using a cheap scan tool off the Internet I’ll drop it into my garage where I had the Cambell change and get him to put it on his machine I was hoping it was something simple like a coil pack where it go’s into limp mode and get a slight Engine shake like it’s misfiring and Engine management light flashing Thanks for the advice again I’ll get it checked out properly
Hello Paul. Thank so much for such precise videos, explanations and advices. I have a 2017 Abarth. On -12:40 minutes, you mentioned about the draining plastic grill and some holes that you detailed on another video. May I know where to find it, so I can remove mine and get that area cleaned. Also, I am having issues with removing the negative terminal on the battery. It looks there is a ring in between, I don't want to damage it. It is a original mopar battery. Again, I appreciate your time and assistance regarding my case. Regards.
If you look in the how to series there’s a video on sloshing sounds and smother one on removing the scuttle panel. What is this ring you’re referring to? Is it a flick thumb release for the battery or the quick release with the red button?
@@Love500 Hello Paul. Thank you for your answer. I checked several videos of yours where you explained about changing the battery; however, terminals on my battery are totally different. My abarth is a US market version, if that may tell you something. Is there anyway to send you a picture? I removed the hex nuts, but the conector is stuck, it swivels a bit, but applying force upwards may damage the terminal. Thank you.
Hi, I have a Fiat 500 with semiautomatic gearbox, the problem I'm facing now is that the car can be driven on manuel only and not on automatic, can you help me plz to find out the reason Behind that and how it can be fixed Thanks
Often the selespeed fluid is low or contaminated. Can also be a problem with oil seals. You need to get diagnostics run on it. They are notorious for going wrong.
Hi mate excellent video appreciate the work I stumbled across your videos as I was looking for a fix for my wifes 500c blue and me issue and speedo flashing which thanks to your video I have diagnosed is her issue, just a another question the engine management light and oil temp light is also dimmily lit in the background is this the speedo unit faulty or to do with the blue and me module. I don't want to replace the speedo unit as we are selling the car and have already spent money on tyres, paint on the spoiler new battery and now this blue and me module any advice is much appreciated.
Our 2016 500 twin air has water leaking into the back. I find it coming from the back / side and then flows to the spare wheel space. I’ve been looking everywhere, using sealant around the wiringloom, back light units and refitted the bootrubber with loads of silicone. Current solution is some holes I drilled iot let the water out again, but I would prefer to stop to intake. Any suggestion?
Can someone help on here have a fiat 500 2016 lounge , changed timing belt, now when it starts from cold , there is a banging noise for 5 mins , and small bit vibration, belt was changed using the fiat kit. Was wondering could it be PCR valve and spark plus neither have been changed since purchase ...
Hi,I've an Abarth595 2016 and it didn't want to start at around 6pm today, would you know why as temperatures have dropped and it was cold start.ran roughly but wouldn't rub smoothly.engine light flashing.
Really enjoyed the vid but couldn’t see anything for the problem we’re currently experiencing with my wife’s Fiat 500 1.2S. When we fill the tank with petrol we’re getting a fuel leak - but only when the fuel filler neck is full. After say 20 miles when the fuel in the filler neck goes down the leak stops! Is this anything you’ve ever come across?
Yes it is. The pipe from the cap to the tank holds a fair bit of fuel. My project Stolen/Recovered Sport had the same problem. The pipe was cracked and leaked quite a lot of fuel. If you get under the back with a torch you’ll probably see it leaking from there. Take a look at that series, will probably be on the last one as it didn’t come to light until after I had sold it and the new owner filled up. It’s not in this video because it’s not a common fault.
recently got a 2015 sport.... fun little car, tho I do wish it had a bit more power for the hills. Good info! I do feel a bit ripped off - no secret compartment under the seat! Is it only the european models that have this??
Not all of them do. Seems random. Not sure whether it was just UK/European. Probably as US cars have a proper glove box rather than just a shelf. We had to wait until the 2016 facelift to get one.
just found your chanel. I have an unrelated question.. I have fiat 500 08 Plate (so rather old. ) the boot lock has just started to not lock. I have tried closing it harder sometimes engages but mostly remains unlocked and the warning light plus a pulsating noise can be heard in the car. Can you help by telling me what to do
I imagine the pulsating is the lock electrics attempting to lock. When it’s open and you press the button on the lock can you hear the solenoid clicking? You could try loosening the two torx screws on the striker plate and moving it up a bit.
Great video as always. My daughter recently bought a 2008 fiat 500 1.3 multijet but she rang today to say her powered steering stopped working and a message on the display saying check power steering see handbook. Anyway again I got to her the problem had vanished. Any pointers as to what the problem might be?
Most likely the dreaded earth strap. Can be temperamental to start with. Could also be the battery on the way out. If the battery is OK I would definitely change the strap.
Hey great video man! Liked and subscribed for sure. I was curious if these things would present themselves in the US versions. I have been looking for the right one for a while now and I have my eyes on a 2017 Abarth. Could I expect the same, different, more, or less issues ? Thanks !
Yours are made in Mexico although not sure whether the US Abarths are but the standard 500s do have some different parts and I think all of yours are the 1.4 whereas in UK and Europe the 1.2 is more common. Most of those problems are going to be just as common in US cars though. Thanks for subscribing.
@@Love500 fantastic, thanks for the reply. I think the Abarths over here are assembled in the same factory in Mexico, but the engine, transmission, and a few other things are from a different source. I'm still definitely buying one as it's one of the most fun cars I've ever driven. I'm going to watch a bunch of your videos and hopefully learn something, but I guess I'll just have to fly it over to you if I really need it worked on, haha
Hi Christian, I have a Fiat 500 with a speedohead that sometimes works, often displays what looks like a foreign language, sometimes not on at all. It needs replacing I think, although because the fault is intermittent I wonder if its an electrical fault. Because its a 2015 dualistic model I can't find any replacements on Ebay etc. Do you know where I could source one rather than having to spend hundreds on a new one please? Much appreciate you video btw. Pam
eBay is the best place. If you can’t find a used one there you’ll find one nowhere.. have a look at my video on changing the LCD panel. The company I got that from might be able to source you an auto one.
@@Love500 Thanks so much for your direction. I watched your LCD panel change and was so pleased to see it worked. Your video didn't mention the company where you got the new LCD panel from. Can you please pass me their details. I'm wondering if I do get one, who would replace it for me. Is this something a general electronic business could do? Any help much appreciated. Best wises and thanks again. Pam
@@pamsmart4180 it’s actually in the description but I got it here. www.akspeedo.com/fiat-lcd-pixel-repair.php Easy enough to change if you follow the video. blue and me module failure must be up there .after it happened to me ,looked online and it seems very common failure.sadly i looked at fiats new system uconnect online and that seems to have same problem
Not sure if you can help here. I have the same issue with a Ford KA dash. Do Ford need to programme the replacement dash cluster or will it work other than the mileage being incorrect?
good video, my fiat 500 lounge 2018 the cruise control has suddenly stopped working, no warning lights and the stalk still works for the speed limiter. is this common? I spoke to fit and they said its not a common fault but they will require the car for a couple of days. is there a fuse ?
shock absoserber mounts getting rusty : apart from the plastic cover is there a type of grease you suggest to put in there to keep the nut from rusting further ?
Not specifically but I use a CV moly grease on most things although it's black. I've seen some where they fill it up with grease, looks awful and messy if you need to change them. The caps on top are by far the best way of keeping the water out but a small smearing of grease around it will certainly help, just not too much. I'm sure some others here, will be able to advise what grease would be best.
@@christga100 yeah same. Caps on and water in. I ended up putting folded kitchen foil on them and amazingly they're still on despite the motorway commute
Hello, I have a 2011 fiat 500 lounge 1.2 fire model vehicle. This car has a start&stop feature, but I have never seen it active. Sometimes it gives a message that start&stop is disabled. When I measure the voltage of the battery, I measure 12.2v when the engine is off and 13.8v when the engine is running. What do you think the problem is?
The disabled message is most likely something like the brake light switch but could be many things. Diagnosstics may point to it if you have mutiecuscan. As for start stop itself, most people turn it off. For one it creates wear on other parts of the car continually restarting, makes little or no difference to fuel consumption and doesn't work more than it works. Will work more with a brand new battery in the summer, but when its cold with a not new battery it will rarely, if ever work, especially on older cars. I always turn it off.
@@Love500 This is my last question😬When the vehicle is running at idle, occasionally the engine vibrates and the idle level drops and then recovers. It continues this way for 2-3 minutes. Very rarely this happens and the engine stops. When I measure the voltage level of the battery while this is happening, the voltage drops from 13.8v to 12.5v during shaking and then returns to 13.8v immediately when the shaking is over. It's instantaneous. It continues this way for 2-3 minutes. Then nothing. everything goes fine as if nothing happened. It does it again while waiting at the traffic light. Then when I come to the front of the house, there is nothing. 😄 I wonder if there is a problem with the alternator?

I'm wondering which colour cable I should connect for the Gearbox ????? Cheers My car did go into Neutral loads from 2nd and 3rd, I've pretty much decided I have a combo of some kind of actuator leak leak, odd fluid drip off the bottom Selespeed bottle ! And the Brake light circuit failure itself . One or other WAS putting the car in Neutral driving, since new brake light switch and more actuator fluid I've still got the fault warning.... But I have got normal brake lights, not flickering as before, and a Selespeed. system that is working normally. It's booked in check the possible leak and the brake light message warning triangle never sorted. These do try me these cars I feel I've learn, more about these AMT systems and brake switches and as a noob, got nowhere , thanks for your help
If not the fluid level then it’s usually the oil seals failing. Most ECUs are yellow adapter excepts engine and steering, gearbox if connecting is clearly another.

We never stop learning when we watch your videos.
Not faults, features!
Seriously, thanks for this video, even though it's a few years old. Just bought a '13 Abarth, and this inspires some preventative maintenance.
Thank God I found you! I am an aging 61 year old American. Your channel tells me everything this 1 car family man needs to D.i.y. Thanx!
My pleasure and hello across the pond.

This video got me hooked, a chap who is honest and tells you what you need to know, many thanks, since this video I’ve just started watching as many videos of LOVE500 as I can!
Thank you for that comment, much appreciated and makes it all worthwhile.
Wife has just got a Fiat 500. This is a brilliant video. Many thanks for creating it.
Just looked at 64 Fiat 500s, fell in love with it, your tips will be very helpful when going back to look again, thank you so much 😊
Great stuff. The S is the nicest I think. I’m getting a damaged one tomorrow.
Great advise ! - I checked the wifes '65' reg car (23k miles) and the drain rubbers were blocked with rubbish.!
Already lubricated the door handles to stop them seizing hopefully. 👍👍
The fact that you mention the hatch wiring is common should explain why my trunk lock won't open after 4 year use. Thanks again!!!
More than likely the cause.
Just bought mine today, wish I had seen your videos first 😅
Amazing infos 🙏🏻
Same here engine light within ba week
Sell it and buy a Toyota.👍
thanks, bought a 2013 fiat 500 that had hill start, stuck in 2nd gear, (automatic), red hood light, see dealer to check engine, among many faults.
@Love500 Hey. Thanks for the reply. I have actually been to Timpsons to check the signal coming from the key, and apparently, it's all good 🤷♀️
Great video.
Had our Fiat500 10 years! and never knew about the passenger seat storage box!! Thanks
Wow, that must be a record.
@@Love500 we also never knew how the seats got stained!!
It’s funny how much these issues are almost exactly the same as the list for my old mk1 Saab 9-3 and very useful as I have just got the wife a 500 😊
You just look for trouble in a car don't you? ?
Thanks for all your help all about 500. My wife wants one which we getting today.
Just found this video, as I'm gonna buy my daughters first car. Thanks for the information.
So, many of these issues are due to poor design and quality engineering. Explains a lot. Great video!
Hi Paul as usual Great, informative advise, your general content and with these common issues with our 500s🙄
The one you mentioned about checking the oil cap, its not always necessarily a head gasket issue ,these cars can suffer from engine condensation build up in the cold of winter with the sudden stop start temperature changes can cause the gunk build up you mentioned, my abarth does or at least did as we recently moved and my car is garaged now☺ so its clear now as its sheltered.
Premature underside rust is another, rub down with wire brush or drill attachment then apply direct to rust metal paint will help slow the rust process down and always looks good come mot time
Also these cars are very sensitive to the slightest voltage drop so of the battery is a bit dicky it will throw up all sorts of electrical warning issues when all it needs is a new battery which should always be your 1st port of call before panicking and delving deep as this will generally cure the issues ,I'm sure you know yourself are aware of some of these I've mentioned but hopefully will help some of your subscribers ! if I think of any others I'll add them .
🙂👍
I’m actually aware of all of them. The brakes on the Abarth only too well.
You get that gunk on the inside of the oil cap on most cars. It's gunk on the dipstick you need to look out for.
Really really appreciate you for this video and your passion for these vehicles I'm super new to the scene and about to purchase one of these cars. this information is vital for anyone searching the second hand market for a 500 thank you.

Great video. Looking to buy a 500 for my wife so this is really useful

Just bought a 62 plate Street edition for my daughter.
Very detailed explanation of the common issues.
Will be checking all the things you mentioned👍
Due it's second cambelt change if it has one. Not deisel or twin air
Due second cambelt change. Not deisel or twin air.
Thanks for your video .. I have just brought one . I will look at these points .. much appreciated
You know your 500s.nice video. Really useful.. I just bought a little 500..
There less of you left on UA-cam now days more and more are willy vodkas now days. Thanks for this.

Hiya Paul
Love the channel.
Thankfully I haven’t as it’s grief apparently. Dash out job.

I don’t I’m afraid. That not something I’ve come up against.
We LOVE our 2016 Fiat 500 Lounge. Just so much more character than anything else in its class. It doesn't give us any trouble at all. I don't know why they got a bad rep in America. Maybe the U.S ones came from a different factory. Bu they're such a fun car.
US cars are made in Mexico and European ones are made in Poland. Different spec. I don’t think US cars have a 1.2 or Twinair. All 1.4 i believe.

Thanks!

The cars were 10+ years, Hoses leaked past original clips. Must be an age thing 👍
Great vid thanks! I have the issue of the dim lights accompanying indicating right (engine, abs, temp), they all go out once the indicator is cancelled. Would that be a new speedo, or is it possibly the rear hatch wiring?
Definitely Speedo. Nothing to do with hatch wiring. Get yourself a replacement on eBay with less miles than your car.
Very informative video. Ive a 2015 fiat 500 7 seater. Recently ive noticed a whistling noise while driving. Its more prominent when the engine is warm from driving throughout the day rather than first thing in the morning. Has anyone else had this problem?

driving normally loss of engine power engine management light flashing turn the key off turn it back on back to normal no codes stored ? Be grateful for any advice
I would be very surprised if there wasn't a code stored somewhere. What are you using to read codes? I would expect MultiECUScan to show something as an intermittent fault. It's a possibility your cambelt is a tooth out, but I don't think that would be intermittent. If it was 180 degrees out, the car wouldn't start. It's probably more likely something has been disturbed and not plugged back in properly during the cambelt change. I would recommend MES for diagnostics rather than a generic scanner. Even a quality one wouldn't be as comprehensive as MES.

Often the selespeed fluid is low or contaminated. Can also be a problem with oil seals. You need to get diagnostics run on it. They are notorious for going wrong.

I don't want to replace the speedo unit as we are selling the car and have already spent money on tyres, paint on the spoiler new battery and now this blue and me module any advice is much appreciated.
It's the speedo I'm afraid. Have a look at my Project Loopy Harold, I've changed the speedo twice on that due to the exact same thing.
100% got to be the aerial. It runs down inside of head lining, behind boot side carpets and into the wheel well.
Can someone help on here have a fiat 500 2016 lounge , changed timing belt, now when it starts from cold , there is a banging noise for 5 mins , and small bit vibration, belt was changed using the fiat kit. I couldn’t possibly say. You need to plug into diagnostics as it could be all sorts of things. Plug or coil or oxygen sensor probably.
So the air bag warning may be the wires in the back? I thought it may have something to do with unplugging the passenger seat
If you’ve unplugged your seat that will put the airbag light on. Hatch wiring can cause all sorts of random errors.
Thanks so much for this info. I am looking at a 2013 Abarth with 129K for mileage. What should I look to pay for it? I was thinking 6200-6500.
I would avoid one with such high mileage. Even if it’s been maintained well that’s a lot of miles.
recently got a 2015 sport.... fun little car, tho I do wish it had a bit more power for the hills.
The milky rubbish under the oil Cap, can also be condensation. If the car has only been used for short trips, never gets up to Temp, it can happen.

Yours are made in Mexico although not sure whether the US Abarths are but the standard 500s do have some different parts and I think all of yours are the 1.4 whereas in UK and Europe the 1.2 is more common. Most of those problems are going to be just as common in US cars though. Thanks for subscribing.

Easy enough to change if you follow the video. I think maybe an auto electrician rather than a generic electronic company would be better if you didn’t fancy doing it yourself. It’s fiddly but you can see the mistakes I made.
blue and me module failure must be up there .after it happened to me ,looked online and it seems very common failure.sadly i looked at fiats new system uconnect online and that seems to have same problem
Nice video,got at least 5 of them!!!And there’s plenty more…..
Not sure if you can help here. I have the same issue with a Ford KA dash. Do Ford need to programme the replacement dash cluster or will it work other than the mileage being incorrect?
Seeing as they are basically the same car I imagine it will work in the same way but as I’ve never done a Ka I can’t say for certain.
good video, my fiat 500 lounge 2018 the cruise control has suddenly stopped working, no warning lights and the stalk still works for the speed limiter. is this common? I spoke to fit and they said its not a common fault but they will require the car for a couple of days. is there a fuse ?
I’ve not had one with cruise control. It will no doubt throw up an error on diagnostics. Can’t think why they would need it a couple of days.
shock absoserber mounts getting rusty : apart from the plastic cover is there a type of grease you suggest to put in there to keep the nut from rusting further ?
Not specifically but I use a CV moly grease on most things although it's black. I've seen some where they fill it up with grease, looks awful and messy if you need to change them. The caps on top are by far the best way of keeping the water out but a small smearing of grease around it will certainly help, just not too much. I'm sure some others here, will be able to advise what grease would be best.
@@christga100 yeah same. Caps on and water in. I ended up putting folded kitchen foil on them and amazingly they're still on despite the motorway commute
@@christga100 I guess it can't hurst, but a smear of grease would be better.
@@Love500 Thanks for the quick reply. Then I will use it this way.😊
@@Love500 This is my last question😬When the vehicle is running at idle, occasionally the engine vibrates and the idle level drops and then recovers.
@@rehacankofuncu734 if you suspect it’s power related I wound change your main earth strap. £4 on eBay.

RE: Advice on Actuator Fluid DuoLogic and Brake Light Switch 'pain'
I did add best part half bottle 0.5l Tutela CS Speeda and found the switch on back 2 pedal set up G.Punto
I never got to the bottom of it tho, booked into electrical specialist tomorrow for Brake Light Switch and Permanent message triangle warning message, Lights, Brake Light
Fuse for Brake Light Switch, B.LSwitch itself, checked, changed. And Brake Bulbs in rear housing inc 3rd High level checked. Everything was dry good contacts no obvious earthing
I hate being beaten
Out interest on MES, I went into Gearbox Marelli Selespeed CFC328 Automated......, it didnt ask for Yellow Cable EML just 'Connecting to ECU'( and Failed to connect )..... I'm wondering which colour cable I should connect for the Gearbox ????? Cheers
My car did go into Neutral loads from 2nd and 3rd, I've pretty much decided I have a combo of some kind of actuator leak leak, odd fluid drip off the bottom Selespeed bottle !
These do try me these cars
I feel I've learn, more about these AMT systems and brake switches and as a noob, got nowhere , thanks for your help
If not the fluid level then it’s usually the oil seals failing. Most ECUs are yellow adapter excepts engine and steering, gearbox if connecting is clearly another.
@@Love500 Exactly what I thought , RE Not Yellow. I was cheap, only got the yellow. I didnt need get into it but could have checked some activations in gearbox. May connect direct just one ELM Bluetooth come think of it.
I'm on my 6th Fiat 500. I miss the cabriolet the most. I only keep them for 30 000km though
How many miles do they last for? Looking at second hand Fiats and not sure what is a high mileage for it...?
