- Most people know that cars come with two basic transmission types. Manual and automatic. In manual the driver needs to change gears by depressing a clutch pedal and using a stick shift.
In Automatics, the transmission will change gears for you automatically based on driving conditions, meaning you never have to think about which gear to use.
But there's also something in between that offers the best of both worlds, known as the dual-clutch transmission. In this video, we are taking a look at these different car transmission types.
Dual-Clutch Transmission (DCT): A dual-clutch transmission closely resembles a manual transmission but uses two clutches to synchronize gear changes instead of one. Each clutch operates a different set of gears one controls the even-numbered gears while the other controls the odd-numbered gears.
Multimode Manual Transmission (MMT): A type of automated manual transmission used by Toyota. The Multimode Manual Transmission (MMT) is a type of transmission system used in certain Toyota vehicles. Unlike a traditional manual transmission, where the driver manually operates the clutch pedal and gear stick, the MMT system incorporates automated technology to handle these functions electronically. It uses a traditional manual gearbox with a computer-controlled clutch actuated by permanent magnet motors.
PDK Transmission (PDK): A type of dual-clutch transmission used by Porsche. First developed in 2009, PDK is an advanced transmission that has revolutionized gear shifting in Porsche vehicles. The basic principles of PDK are the same as most dual-clutch gearboxes they have two clutches and two gearboxes combined into one casing.
Electronically Controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT): An ECVT is a type of transmission system commonly used in hybrid vehicles. Unlike traditional transmissions with fixed gears, a CVT offers a continuous range of gear ratios, allowing the engine to operate more efficiently across various driving conditions.

I started driving in the late 60's. I learned on 3 on the tree. I've owned 3 speeds, 4speeds, 5 speeds, semi-automatics, and full automatics. I've owned 2 DCT cars, a Ford and a Toyota. Those 2 transmissions gave me more trouble than all the cars I owned in the last 50 years. Want trouble free reliable transmissions? learn to drive a standard and be kind to the clutch. It'll last the life of the car.
Which one was the best?
Dual clutch systems have a downside not mentioned in the video. For very low speeds like parking, traffic jams or slow creeping at traffic lights the transmissions needs to constantly slip the first gear or in cases second gear clutch. Its especially damaging when on an incline. Regular torque converters dont have that problem leading people to adopt a driving style that can be very bad for dual clutches. And while its basically the same for manuals the driver usually knows when hes slipping the clutch and he for example wont stop his car on an incline by slipping the clutch. Having known that my DSG Golf never had any issues in that regard over 10 years and 250k km.
best automatics I owned were several cars with GM 3 speed Turbohydromatics, and a 2 speed Powerglide, and any of the several manual transmissions. Worst by far were the Ford 2DCT and the Toyota 2DCT. The Ford kept contaminating the clutch plates with oil, and slipping under acceleration, and the Toyota began having trouble with up shifts.@@controllex_
@@TheDude50447I have a Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid, a hybrid with a DCT. The electric motor is used in the low-speed situations you mentioned, and it seems to almost completely resolve the issue of clutch slippage at those speeds. It's a pretty neat solution, letting it be driven a lot more like a traditional automatic without much risk of damaging it.
That's all just to say, not all DCTs are bad! I'm at about 100k miles, and my transmission is holding up very well. It's pretty cool how a hybrid powertrain can shore up weaknesses in different kinds of transmissions, like in the eCVT you see in a Prius.
Some of the information is quite misleading or just wrong: Most modern automatics (e.g. Mercedes 5Gtronic, 7G-tronic and 9G-tronic, but also from Audi and many more) DO offer a manual mode in which the driver can select a gear by using shift-paddles or the drivemode selector. Modern torque converter autos have a "fully locked mode" in which a clutch-like mechanism engages, bypassing the torque converter, so you don't have loss of power and efficiency due to the nature of the torque converter. The torque converter is only used while shifting and when starting from a stand still. As soon as the engine- and gearbox-rpm get within a certain range, the clutch closes and you have a solid connection between the engine and the gearbox.
Exactly, this video and frankly, most if these transmission videos get basic autos wrong. Even my tacoma can select gears in manual mode
Pretty sure this is an AI generated video, purely thinking that PDK is anything but a DCT and the computer generated sounding voice, plus such factual inaccuracies is getting the alarm bells ringing in my head. Either that or it's people trying to hook into the engineering clique on UA-cam by just remaking other videos that explain it much better.
Manual only for me.❤
I love manual transmission
The DCT transmission that you are showing is from an F series BMW and used for ZF8 speed automatics that are NOT DCT transmissions, at 0:22 you are showing an F80/F82 M3/M4 gear selector, that one is DCT but only in the M cars with that rounded gear selector.
VW’s DSG has to be one of the best DCT’s I’ve ever driven. Have it on my mk8 GTI and it is phenomenal. No jerkiness at all, and really responsive shifts. I’ve also driven the DCT on a Benz a-class. Unfortunately very jerky in the low gears. So some brands do it very well, and some need work 😊
Ford's DCT 'automatic' used mainly on last generation North American Focus and Fiesta were a total disaster, in part leading to their demise in the North American market. The Detroit Free Press did an extensive investigative article on how Ford failed from development to create a reliable and good transmission. There were massive failures of clutches actuators, ruined clutches, the jerkiness so bad they were not safe for many drivers. An extended warranty was given to DCT owners but it was worthless as parts were not available, in backorder for many months. Like some, I had to get rid of my Focus as a significant loss due in part to its DCT problems.
In depth guide on DCT transmission ❤️
On the jerkiness of the DCT/DSG that is indeed true. Applying throttle at 10 kph is challenging. I know the sentence sounds stupid but adding throttle at low speed will put the vehicle in a state where it is constantly adding throttle and lifting off. My car is tuned so you can guess how difficult it is to get it moving. Manual is easier believe it or not
Same here. There are some "points" in the throttle where it seems like the transmission doesn't know what to do. It never happened when I floored it, for example
automatics came in various forms. AT or CVT or AMT(MMT in video) or DCT or whatever hybrid transmission.
AMT is very underrated. It is seldomly used on home vehicle because it is not smooth when changing gears. However this is a VERY GOOD replacement of manuals on semitrucks because it is cheap and takes the torque with ease.
Hybrid transmission came in its own segment because it is just that complex. The simplest one is electric transmission just like what you've seen on diesel locomotives. However there are other solutions such as BYD's DMI transmission or toyota's ecvt.
I drove an MR2 once with the computer controlled clutch and it was awful lol. You would literally have no power output between the fairly slow shifts. Seemed dangerous to me. My preferred transmission is a built auto or the newer autos that rev match and shift as fast as a DCT. The throttle response is beautiful
When will they make a video about how manual transmissions make you feel alive and in control of your drive, whereas automatics make you feel like a passenger. 😅😂 The DCT is a comfortable mix in the middle.
If you drive an automatic and you feel you are a passenger you have serious problems.
Manual transmission is always the best.. no slush boxes, rubber band transmission or computer controlled crap and you can clutch start a manual if your starter died
Having owned a dual clutch golf previously and a torque converter Mazda now Im pretty sure both transmissions can be operated manually through pedals on the steering wheel or an option on the gear selector.
Stick is the most fun. Period.
Very good information
I be honest I'm not exactly a fan with Stickshift, but that MMT is convinced me to get a car with a MMT
suzuki small cars ❤
MMT it’s ass don’t do it bro
Stick it’s the most fun and trouble free, but not the most comfortable one. I own a 2006 Yaris with a MMT, at lower gears (and in heavy traffic) it’s a pain in the azz driving my car, up shifts / down shifts are slow and feels like you driving a manual car and shifting urself. I reprogramed the gearbox many times. At one point i had to buy a new actunator, also new clutch (+ reprogammed ofc because it won’t move and gears won’t engage) but that wasn’t a big deal, i did that myself. So at the end of the day i don’t really recommend it, get a traditional automatic transmission instead. I had all those problems at 3.5 years of ownership & only +44K Km’s in total. Still have the car tho, i hope big problems will stay away from me😅
It’s not weird if it’s fucking mainstream. The Automatic is more relevant than Manuals are nowadays. And that’s the weird part.
Single clutch H pattern manual is the best and cheapest
Interesting
The eCVT explained in this video is used by Subaru
Ok
I think you miss one, during the 90's my friend have a car with a manual stick but it is a automatic with no clutch pedal. I drive it once but can't remember the brand or model. If you know which car it is, let me know.
He missed alot more then one
Saab?
SAAB had the “sentronic” gearbox with autoclutch.
I believe Fiat produced a gearbox like that back in the 90's
My vehicle is an automatic. It is a dial automatic transmission.
that’s the worst transmission ever
Wait..... I had a 2001 Honda Integra with an MMT.
So MMT is basically an AMT
unusual transmission car in my country
kick e power
atto 3
dolphin
seal
good cat
they are have no mechanical shifting they used computers to control phase instead
note : you can not revving engine at N positions in eCVT car because it controlled by computer and engine not ever started in N positions and notice to shift to D or B position the most advantage of eCVT was brake systems it can prolong your brake pad
Had a Toyota corolla 2008 with the mmt gearbox. It was like driving with someone who doesn't know how to use a manual. It was the worst driving experience i ever had. Don't buy cars with that gearbox.
Also the porsche gearbox is called doppelkupplungsgetriebe
Try saying it 3 times back to back
ECVT or CVT is the worst.
Toyota Ecvt is the best , even more reliable than regular autos
I will never get a CVT car again. The cost of repair for that whole assembly costs almost half of the car when it was bought brand new.
@@shadowalkyou got a jatco transmission? Nothing wrong with Toyota's ECVT and CVT is pretty reliable also with Honda CVT.
The issue is that this video said "an eCVT is nothing like a regular CVT", and then proceeded to demonstrate the structure of a regular CVT.
Toyota's eCVT has no mechanical changes to ratios, and instead all it does is use a planetary gear to give engine power to the wheels and a generator. There literally are no belts or chains in a Toyota eCVT like the video demonstrates, and instead the ratio is controlled by controlling the generator speed electronically.
I'd NEVER buy a CVT car, but happily bought an eCVT one.
CVT is technically the most efficient you can make. Williams F1 team made a CVT F1 car, and it was banned because it wasn’t fair to the other teams, it was just too good. You always had the perfect ratio for the engine to perform at it’s best. CVT means infinity of gears
