    Lightweight discs are a lifesaver for me after having shoulder surgery. It takes less effort to get distance. I had to switch to playing lefty a year ago, and just recently started to practice right handed again. It’s been a whirlwind learning all over again, and finding what works for me since forehand shots weren’t an option. I can throw them now, but can’t really rip on it yet because it causes shoulder pain.

    It is important to take into account, when you throw a "golf line" and not the grip locks since the grip locks will go further but delineate off the intend line a lot further. I personally think light weight is great for high speed discs and overstable discs especially as just a regular joe.

      as a fellow regular joe i might have to try out some more lightweight discs!

      I have 350 forehand power and threw a 157 blizzard destroyer for a while till it got too beat in. Great for stand still woods shots and tail wind distance shots

    I live at 8,000 ft elevation and the thinner air makes discs behave much more over-stable. Plus I’m sixty-eight and can no longer get as much rotation out of heavy discs. Light, under-stable discs such as terns and mambas solve both problems for me, and absolutely give me more distance.

    Lightweights will also exaggerate any errors in your throw. So you might get some added distance, but if you are releasing on a slight annhyzer angle, lighter discs will show it much more clearly.

    I like throwing lighter weight distance drivers. Fission waves or air spectrum D3s in Mid to lower 160 grams. It goes further me 300-350 ft.

      i have heard a lot of good things about waves and D3’s but never thrown them! i need to get my hands on them

    I tend to use different weights for situations. I like to have some distance drivers like the Tern, Hades, roadrunner in about 156g-160g then I have some heavier drivers that are more stable for windy days. Fairway drivers and mids around 160's - 170g and putters around 170g or higher. I could have 3 of the same driver in different weights and know I have one or two that will not turn over right on me in the wind just because the weight keeps the speed down. Furthermore I've got some friends and my wife that have had trouble getting a straight flight or distance out of their drives and convincing them to throw say a 158g driver with a negative turn like -3 or -4 has really helped with that. It's just so much easier to flick a light disc and get a good flight if the conditions are right.

    I have 160 mvp photon that freaking rips. Stable as a rock. Photons also go all the way down to 145 grams and I'll put a buck on it that'll rip rock steady too.

      150 wave flys great but after a bit of seasoning has gotten a little too flippy

    All of my max distance drivers are under 160g. I can throw them about 60ft (about 425ft total on the perfect rip) further than their 175g counterparts. It took some practice to not grip lock them, but now I can get a full turning flight out even something like Nuke. I also find lightweight discs easier for long turning shots that you don't want to hyzer out. I have a lighter weight beat in buzzz for my dogleg right woods shots. If it's windy, don't even think about throwing something in the 150s for a headwind. In addition to much higher risk of turning it over, they also don't go as far as a heavier disc. In a tailwind though, absolute dream.
    I've been playing for years. I'm not super muscular and I'm also short, so lighter discs are probably an even bigger deal for me than someone with longer arms.

      yeah i play in wind quite a bit that is why i have usually shied away from them but i kinda want to try them out now! especially for long turning shots that is a good idea

    I feel like I have a tendency to yank lightweight discs because the disc doesn't rip out of my hand with the momentum in the same way. I have to be more deliberate in the release, whereas I dont even really think much about releasing the disc with heavier ones. To each their own but I like the heavier discs.

      I have had that thought before! and still kind of do. i have recently been trying to slow my form down and i don’t seem to notice it as much anymore, but they are definitely a different tempo!

    • @SmarteeSteve
      @SmarteeSteve 5 місяців тому

      Totally agree! My Glitch is 157, and I yank it to the right much more than a full weight disc

    • @derekrochniak363
      @derekrochniak363 5 місяців тому +1

      The arm angle and release point should be the same regardless of the weight of the disc. If you’re yanking shots, it’s your form and not the disc. It’s psychological since we think we have to throw harder since the disc is lighter. You don’t. Focus more on form and you’ll likely notice more distance with less effort

      Practicing with lighter discs improved my form for this same reason. It wasn’t the lighter discs but rather bad form that was causing me to pull it.

    The classic beginner move is assuming that more distance from teepad translates to less distance from basket. That's rarely actually true.

    • @acfrisbee

      would you expand on that? im not sure i understand, but sounds interesting

      Assuming it’s thrown on target, it actually would be true every time…

    (imo) Lightweight discs are definitely longer in a tail to neutral wind thrown at full power, but if you don't have enough pop to make the lighter disc rip out of your hand they can be very inconsistent, and bad to learn with. For 300 ft - 350 ft players 162 g is The Sweet Spot. 400 ft arms can get away with the 150 g's, but if you're learning: stick with the max weight to develop better form. Ultimately, distance comes from good form and technique.

    Another reason to use lighter weight is to throw really over stable discs. I love my lightweight Ape (more stable than a Boss). It can sometimes go wide because of the weight but the disc is so over stable it will come back eventually. It's my favorite driver to throw in the wind, but I do wish it was heavier now that I beat it in! Just for reference it's 12 grams lighter than my usual drivers and 5-8 grams lighter would probably be the sweet spot, for me anyway.

    • @acfrisbee
      @acfrisbee  5 місяців тому

      yeah i like that! discraft just dropped the z light run with a similar idea, they are like more throwable overstable or high speed drivers right?

    I dont know your Arm, but a halo boss is a monster, so hard to tame. My 155g gstar boss only goes further when its a tail wind. The Gstar boss's are money for 400 to 450.

    • @acfrisbee
      @acfrisbee  5 місяців тому

      yeah the halo boss is too much disc for me, a mainly have it for my bad forehand lol

    Lighter weights make em slightly less stable and less reliable in the wind. However they absolutely add some distance. I speak for blizzard and Innova and myself only.

    All of these weight comparison, videos lack physics or statistics. Because objects in motion have a tendency to stay in motion. Sir Isaac Newton put this to bed hundreds of years ago. Given the same amount of energy, they will go to same distance. They may not take the same lines because the lighter disc may turn more. The same amount of energy will start a lighter disc at a higher speed. While slowing faster with the air pressure. Also, This is way too small of a sample size to make any conclusion. Especially out of an inconsistent thrower. Finding a disc that has the right amount of turn and glide based on your arm and wind is going to be your furthest distance Disc. Of course that choice can include weight, mold, and how much the disk has been broken in.

    • @acfrisbee
      @acfrisbee  4 місяці тому +1

      i appreciate the edit😂 and yes i was comparing the “same disc” in different weight for this video to see if i could tell a difference with a few throws. if i was trying to find my farthest flying disc it probably wouldnt be either of these. obviously im not a scientist and a perfect test would include some sort of launch machine that releases the disc with consistent power and angle👍 i am just having fun throwing some discs!

    • @crusher26638
      @crusher26638 4 місяці тому +1

      Yes, it would be cool to have a machine. But my guess is the machine would end up throwing both weighted discs at the same speed. And watching other videos trying to get to the bottom of whether or not lightweight plastic goes further have measured the throws with a speed gun. And with human input, I do believe your arm speed increases with the lighter disc. Which would include more turn on the same mold of Disc. Versus more inertia. Which is my argument to why they go to the same distance. But in the field, I have found that disc with the most turn is easily my farthest disc. Whether or not lightweight or heavy. It’s the turn or instability that matters. But obviously when you’re playing disc golf, having a real unstable disc is hard to control. I’m having fun too. I’m glad you are as well. I’m just a guy that doesn’t know how to control himself on the anonymous Internet. Lol I made a similar comment to Drew Gibson, while trying to figure out the difference between an 11 and a 12 speed. They went about 10 feet different and he thought that sounded about right. I seemed to be only after one throw each. Maybe he has a machine like arm but I thought it was a ridiculous post. I’ll keep watching.

      @@crusher26638 haha yes i think i remember a similar drew gibson video where he was testing mvp’s 14.5 speed or something. but hey drew gibson has a more consistent release than a lot of people😂
