It's Illegal To Fly The Drone Over The Prison 🛸🎥❌

- Опубліковано 5 лют 2025
- Today we take a look around HMP Leicester, 116 Welford Rd, Leicester LE2 7AJ.
We get told that it's illegal to fly a drone over a prison but we just wanted to fly it from outside the flight restriction zone.
After we walked around and made our observations, we take the drone up for a view from the sky.
We was joined by @TheTorbinator1 on this video.
Enjoy!
Thanks to @Carl & Alison Positive Audio Liverpool who donated the drone music for this video. To listen to the Music & Drone Footage only, see this Playlist - • DJ Audits / D.a.v.i.d....

I really love your style of auditing. You walk assertively up to the edge of your rights and firmly root yourself there with no intention of going beyond them. You're never rude or aggressive and you make people who act that way look like buffoons. Beyond all that, you even manage to be genuinely educational. Keep up the great work.
I've mentioned this to other auditors. There's a business opportunity available for one (or a group of you) to bridge the gap between new auditors and businesses and the police. You could be offering your services as a (paid) consultant, advising businesses, private security firms AND the police of what they should be aware of, when dealing with members of the public who are filming onsite. From a business point of view it should be pointed out to them the positives of how good audit reflects on their business
Teach the police, why they should stop going down the terrorist route for a stop and search. With the use of drones a lot of police are slow to become aware of what is and isn't legal.

As auditors go I quite like you pal. Your very calm and on the whole fairly well educated with the police and the law. However you need to stay away from those idiots like that fool that's latched onto you. They are only seeing your success and want a piece of the action. My advice would be to carry on as you have been and stay away from those idiots.
We only spent a few hours together mate, 4 videos filmed in total. 👍
@@DJAUDITS keep up the good work really enjoy your content 👍
@@DJAUDITS Just a bit of information for you to as I know you like to get into the details. It's reference the hash marks you seem to be confused about on Armed response vehicles. That isn't a national sign it differs from force to force. For example you may find them in yellow or a different shape ie a triangle. It's just a tactical regonintion symbol. The reason it's displayed on the roof is so it can be identified from the air. So it's nothing to do with a blood splatter. It's just an identification to show the vehicle is armed.
@@Crashawsome just an observation my friend just an observation.

Forget the prison matey...that is the BEST FLIPPIN BUS STOP EVER
If you don't already know, a fella managed to jump the wall by scaling a drain pipe, he broke his ankles....got to a house across the road and holed up for two days.
Stole a car and made it to Derby before they caught him.
Interesting video as I catch the 86 and didn't realise the new busstops talked to you as well as bang on bus telemetry. Thanks...just going to try one.😽👍
Wall looked easy to get over from the outside. Plenty of things to wrap a rope around on the top of the wall.
What a Lovely PRISON BUILDING 194 years old and as always some fab Drone shoys of the prison and city centre Well Done Guys - Stay Safe - PINAC!
Love the castle look, great video again DJ. 😀
We love Leicester audits! I do anyway haha its cool seeing familiar places and I've seen the prisons on the way to the kingpower stadium before
Always entertaining we can watch your vids all day long 👍 .I think DJ audits is the most experienced&educated with the law when it comes to drones. Respect
I find it funny when people think you need permission to be FREE to carry on with your hobby !
Watching To much American TV 📺
As folks have already mentioned in the comments about escapes from Leicester gaol the only man too do so was Albert Hattersley, 1953,who did break his legs quite badly.
But I know for a fact more prisoner's have been accidentally released than have escaped due too admin errors.
Leicester gaol does have quite an interesting history.
Just a comment. In many videos, auditors suggest that people requesting privacy should simply keep away from the person with the camera. In this video you try and question someone who clearly doesn’t want to be filmed, and thus retreats from you, and they get called out for being “rude”. Is there another option for someone who is camera shy which meets with your approval?
He was asking a question, the question was answered weirdly, the bloke has privacy glass so what's the problem?
@@chetwyn1030 I was actually referring to the attempt to question someone at about 3.00 minutes.
Yes there is. Any public servant sucking the tit of the taxpayer that is camera shy has the only option available at all times. QUIT and work for the private sector.
Not like DJ to be rude, but that was. Calling someone weird who was shy, or maybe hiding from a beater,
Chaps, fair play! I always wanted to fly near this, just to take images and see the skyline, great footage! Thanks!

yet another really interesting, informative DJ Audit. He summarises it superbly within his own narrative. Very enjoyable to watch and always an interesting reflection on the staff - who were very professional. Stars of the show included purple steering wheel cover man, polite & colourful 'meals on wheels' lady and the bloke who doesn't know if he is driving an unmarked police car. Fantastic work - thanks DJ and TORB. 🙂
Nice one DJ
There were rumours a few years ago about closing as a prison and opening it as a boutique hotel
8:47 "All buses services are canceled today, the next bus is in one years time and is subject to be cancelled." thats what Stagecoach would put out if they were in our City.
We have the same thing, an audio message plays from a tower at the bus stop like the one in the vid, it's been like it for a long time, in fact the message is recorded on a 78.
Great video again from dj audits well done matey keep them coming great the prison videos are cheers

Also on the Scudamore road theres oadby plastic. Keep up the good work 👍
Great looking building, great vidio, thanks DJ..
The FRZ for most UK prisons only extends from ground level to 50 metres. So, if you take off outside the FRZ and up to at least 50 metres and below 400 feet you can fly over a prison. They're concerned mainly with people dropping stuff like phones and drugs. So, they probably think that anything dropped form higher than 50 metres (164 feet) isn't a problem. Mind you, most prison staff don't know that. So, they might try and give you agro about it. Don't forget that some prisons, Leeds for example, are inside an FRZ from the proximity of the airport and the prison gets a free pass on that one.
DJ you translated what she was trying to say absolutely spot on
Woman in the van was trying to tell a drone operator who is trained and knows the rules how and where you can fly a drone. All because she thought it was illegal because of what the prison officer had said - and she's thinks authority figures are always right.
You mean like many auditors take the word of other auditors without question?
She wouldn't fly a drone without extra permission. I guess that's her choice. I know I wouldn't ride a skateboard in the area even if I got permission from the Warden and all the inmates, but thats because I can't ride a skateboard to save my life.
There’s more to legislation around where you can fly drones than you’ll learn on a drone course.
There’s laws and regulations around refineries and fuel depots for instance. These will prohibit overflights by drones as they aren’t intrinsically safe.
Prisons have their own legislation too - again, you won’t learn that on a basic drone course. The police have specific stop and search powers around prisons relating to drone flights as an example.
The CAA themselves point out drone flying is subject to other laws and restrictions that they can’t advise on.
A trained drone operator? Yet mentions a helipad , bet he didn’t call them to let them know he was flying , putting an air ambulance at risk . Amazing all theses drone flights you conduct yet you never show your drone height , be honest and open as you want every own else’s to be , unless you are breaking the rules too ?
@@pup6728 That's food for thought...
Refineries are quite rightly obsessive about fire safety.
Waving a lithium battery about,a few hundred feet above one, isn't really a safe or sensible thing to do is it?
For anyone that thinks it is, look at some of the vids showing the massive amount of energy released when lithium batts, get damaged..- it's scary !
What a awful looking jail! Interesting building but being a prisoner there must be shit! There is no yard other that that big cage. I feel claustrophobic just looking. Great drone foo again DJ well done 👍

You mentioned in a previous video about CAA height levels over buildings. Does that not apply here. Like your work. Keep it up. 😊
The CAA rules are only about ensuring safety in airspace.
Completely separate legislation override the CAA height/distance rules where prisons are invoked.
The CAA explain that other legislation that they won’t cover will apply to certain situations/locations in their guide to drone laws.
Where the taxi went in is called the Sally Port l think
I love they wont talk to you because of the camera, but theres a sign right by the door saying 'Your are being watched' :D Honestly, the irony.

I think the walls are tapered out at the bottom for strength rather than for people to bounce off on the way down 🤭
Very impressive camera on the drone. I take it you flew straight up to a specific height with no forward motion which might put you into the no fly zone.
How does the drone react if suddenly you stray into the FRZ?
Lol! Google is your friend!
Cool looking prison, still wouldn’t want to be inside it though 😉

Only my opinion and I can understand why it’s good to have an audit buddy but I do think a second person in your shots disrupts the flow of your excellent audits, Im not a lover of the more confrontational auditors, I think you’ve got it just right apart from the pre mentioned.
Possibly just me but I just thought I’d mention a bit of constructive criticism. Keep up the good work regardless 👍
DAVID did a great job, oh so did you DJ ha ha ha😎
you might not beleive this in 1989 i was in Stadelheim munich . There was building work going on .I collected a brick a day put them in 4 pillow cases and tied sheets together swung them round and round then fired them over the wall . then i climbed up the sheets and jumped off god it hurt . Hipps ankles arse teeth my knees Hit my chin .Then I ran wobbled ran then i came home . 4 days .
🤣🤣🤣😮
I lived there for a few month and personally met the Brighton bomber whilst working in the kitchens peeling spuds in the cage out back, he was walking around the yard for high profile prisoners and stopped for a minute to chat. I also met Reggie kray on the landing and spoke to him. My mates and people I tell think I'm bullshitting but I know who I spoke with. This was 1993. The prison was good fun at times and the food was good to. Slopping out wasn't pleasant with pee and excrement flying everywhere and the recess flooded🙂
Ha ha loving this guys...
Me too!
I go by it on the 86 quite often and fortunately....have never been inside.
There is a brand new state of the art prison being opened as we speak just down the road at the turning point of the bus 86.
I and a lot of people are hoping with its history, it will be turned into a museum but we have to see.
Google its history.
Lady in the van thought to toss her 2 cents in and found out it wasnt even worth 1.
Can u try to go to dartmoor prison I think it is one of the oldest prisonin England..
Is that John Cooper Clark with you there?
The munter in the van was trying so hard not to be salty with you.
This is a pretty cool prison
Spent 10 months in welford Rd seen some notorious prisoners in this prison I was here in 1990 it's a b cat prison and victorian Leicester used to have the Heigest walls in Europe..
A castle to keep people in .... now there’s an inversion for you
Pity ya d8dnt cover about the leg breakers on the outside I always found that interesting living near by as a kid

Hay mate can you do Milton Keynes jail 👊🏻
Well done DJ another excellent video,I hope the conditions inside are not as medieval as the prison portrays on its castle appearance. That woman was been ever so polite to you guys instead of saying piss off and get a life rather than hang around outside prisons but if you take your drone up you may well end up inside ?
wags have been known to flash their knockers to inmates from the top floor of the multi story car park opposite lol
Hi DJ, the tradition of building prisons that look like castles got all the way to Bury St Edmunds, your home turf I think.
The place I refer to is just out past the Brewery over the roundabout on the way to Lavenham.
In answer to your later question it could be that while you seem to be like normal people to me it is not common for such folks to actually go out and be so 'difficult' in public, dumb compliance and obedience is what they are used to and expect.
Cheers, Richard.
A lovely looking building, but I’ll bet it costs a fortune to maintain, and likely unsuitable for todays holiday camp style hotels, sorry prisons.

What drone do you use?
DJI MINI 2
If I were to be remanded to prison, in your country, I fancy that this joint would be a pleasant stay...especially with the swimming pool.
Got that weirdo again with you I see 😂
Thought their'd be more outside space for sardine inmates... very claustrophobic place.
When requested to supply operator ID by anyone do you have to give it especially if requested by police ?
I remember this prison from AB🤔
SO LONG AS YOU DONT FLY OVER IT . ITS IS LEGAL TO FLY IT ROUND THE BUILDING AT EÑEY HEIGHT
I just noticed there is no anti-climbing thing on top of the wall that’s unusual.
If this building where in london the prisoners would have been relocated and the building sold to investors...
Another absolutely fantastic video. More of these videos and stay safe PLEASE.
The gate is called a portcullis
There has been inmates jump off that wall of that prison and Nelson Mandela Park was called Welford reaction for years
She’s looks so annoyed lol!
As I understand it the drone restriction over prisons is governed by height above ground level. Different prisons may have varying height restrictions but once above that restriction they cannot prevent a drone being flown over.
164 feet and below ... 165 to 400 feet is okay .... apparently
My great uncle Jack used to say that meals on wheels was muck on a truck!..
Prison officers don’t want to be filmed as they don’t want themselves and their personal vehicles being publicly identified for their safety and security (as well as the safety of their families). They have to say no to sometimes very dangerous criminals who are well connected on the out and willing to intimidate and hurt them if necessary or if they are upset by officers who are simply doing their job and implementing standard prison procedures and rules. Leave them alone and have a bit of sensitivity towards the risk you could be putting them in. The job can be very dangerous
