  • After making my first Acoustasonic style guitar, I had so many wonderful suggestions from all of you viewers. Well, I decided to tear apart my favorite guitar and rebuild it using your great suggestions. I made some mistakes along the way and learned a few lessons. Thanks to everyone who offered ideas; I really appreciate the input!

The rebuild of your acoustasonic came to me as a real surprise. Many years ago (about 25) I began building a Martin style dreadnaught. I made the top and placed a beautiful rosette around the soundhole. Bracing was done according to plans. I never completed the guitar. When I saw your original build I thought I could use that top for a build similar to yours. The bracing should be sufficient even though it's much thinner than yours. Slightly under 1/8 of an inch. Lovely Engleman spruce that turned out just the way I wanted it. Then I discovered your rebuild. You have done what I was planning to do. Your rebuilt version is ecellent and gives me the impetus to finish one that's similar. I enjoy your videos and wish you good fortune.

Don't worry about mistakes, we all make them, if you are brave enough to admit it. Some of my first Banjos went in my wood furnace! That's how we learn! I personally feel if you do try another you might try making you top a bit thinner maybe 3/16" or even 5/32" and also maybe if you put a couple cross braces of the top short ones like an acoustic guitar would have and the scollop the braces some. That would allow your top to flex with the vibrations a lot more for the acoustic part of the sound. Great job though you build looks very nice!

@@DIYGene :) Yeah it looks like a lot of fun, and the end result is pretty good too ! I am myself doing research into creating an instrument like this ... i think it's fantastic, because you can get acoustic sounds out of an electric instrument and the woodworking is much simpler than building an acoustic from scratch because you only need to design and make the body since the rest is "standard" fender-style stuff. And that's briliant !

Wow, that finish in the guitar is stunning! I’m going to try that on my next build. Probably a Frankenstrat with a Humbucker Alnico 8 in the bridge, a Single coil Alnico 5 in the middle & a Single Alnico 2 in the neck. Also, an A250 pot with .222 cap for the neck & middle tone, and A500 pot with .470 cap for the bridge. I then want to have the possibility to make position 4 on a 5 way switch to split the coils. Should make for a range of different tones.

@@DIYGene I'm thinking on adding this on my to-do list (could be awhile). A couple of thoughts, yes, a bridge style piezo makes sense. Also there are many tools to blend the piezo and magnetic pickups. I've got an external device on my Rockabilly kit guitar, with a piezo enabled tune-o-matic bridge, and then wired it to a stereo output jack, and the magnetic on the other end. Finally it goes into a device from Brenner Guitars to blend them externally.
There are also internal blenders, that Fishman and others sell.
I know that on acoustic guitars Spruce is the most common top wood used. I wonder if that would help on completely acoustic sound, as that is something this guitar should give.
Final thought, I understand acoustic strings, coated in bronze, don't work well at all on magnetic pickups. Just curious how that works for you.
So it won't be right away, but it's sure tempting to do one of these.

Few grains of salt in the glue will help it not slipping while you are gluing.
Bracing is a great idea to reduce top's thickness. The lighter it is the better it'll sound. So the idea is to reduce the thickness of the top to someting much thiner than this one. After 3 snding it probably got better.
Excellent idea to mask the bridge area.
I'd have used just Tru Oil on the top. I apply Tru oil in several very thin layers rather that one fat layer.
To make sure everything is well alingned always have your centerline and check alignment with a laser.
    Very nice project anyway.

    • @DIYGene

The sanding did bring the thickness down a lot. I was scared to let it get much thinner. I agree on the Tru-Oil. In this guitar I put on several coats. Great suggestion with the salt. I will definitely try that. Thanks so much for the great advice and for watching.
