  • Wingback Chair Teardown is a demonstration of how we tear down a chair or other piece of furniture here at Kim's Upholstery. The tools I use are what any professional upholsterer might use but you can use any tool that works for you. You will be pulling tacks and staples out of wood and fabric.

My goodness 😮. I’m working on a vintage chair similar to your. What a job. I’m thinking that I was crazy when I said yes to this one.

I love watching your videos with both of you. Its strangely comforting. I've learned plenty from you as a newbie to the upholstery world and I thank you greatly.

Katrina Grady Thanks you so much Katrina. We do have a lot of fun making the videos together. I am sure Bill will be putting out more bloopers so you can see the goofy side.
      Happy upholstering, Kim

I picked up a button tufted vinyl wingback chair that appears to be made in the 1980s due to the faded label with a couple rips on the bottom cushion for free next to a dumpster. I use it as my chair for movie and tv watching, computer, gaming , and napping. It’s definitely worth reupholstering from the springs up.

Thank you for the clear and concise tutorial. I picked up a beautifully crafted wingback chair from Goodwill for $30. The current fabric is old and worn so I was looking to upholster myself. This is very helpful!

Great video. I am a "newbee" at upholstering and see great potential in the chairs I see in many thrift stores. Is there a follow up video to this one? It would be great to see the finished product as well as the steps leading up to it.

P Mantis , Hello. No we don't have a follow up on this specific video. However there are a lot of videos showing different portions of the upholstering process. Hope they will help you. We also have online project videos available at upholsteryclass.kimsupholstery.com. Have a great day, Kim

Hi, I just wanted to get my wingback sofa chair upstairs but its too wide for the stairs. Is there an easy way to take off one arm (side) to get it upstairs and assemble again or is it too complicated to do it quickly without having some experience?

Question...I have a wingback chair that has a broken leg and I wanted to take the whole thing apart to use the wood and stuffing for pet furniture, BUT as I started to attempt to take it apart I became a bit concerned because under all the fabric (and there are 3 layers of different fabric! ) the wood for the back and the sides all seem to have wooden pegs that are part of each piece that I would have to get apart to use each piece. How does one get the wooden pegs detached without destroying the wood? This has been a very tough job all in all. I didn't have any of the right tools and simply started out with a couple screw drivers and a pair of pliers. I have looked everywhere for "how to take apart a wingback chair" and this was the closest thing I found since most seem to be for reupholstering, not for re-purposing the wood. Thanks.

Hey, where's your dust mask? And most important--no loose change in the chair sides?? Always great info in your videos. Never used an awl before. Good tip!

Hi thanks for the post.... Im reupholstering our lounge suite and I want to make the seat and arms more comfy by making the foam thicker...will I need to make the fabrics larger? Also the inner back of the chairs are uncomfortable- the upper part of it is thicker and flattens out on the bottom half of the inner back. Can i change it so it is the same thickness throughout? - thank you.

Hello Arieta, Yes you change anything you'd like to. You will have to measure the piece to get the new cut sizes. We do show this in the online tutorials on our website. Enjoy! Kim
