Another channel, House Bourbon, just threw this into his top whiskey blind as a late addition. He remarked that the bottle had really opened up enough to consider its inclusion (in the end i dont think it cracked his top 10 and unsure if he has a full review of it posted) But as with everything, tastes differ. I would have my ODG 16 in my regret list for sure but I remember you enjoying it a great deal. Here's to the New Year and thank you Cam for all the videos and lives of 2024 you gave us! Cheers!
@bwalsh1105 I got the OGD16 for $160 out the door and it hurts less but still doesn't feel worth it to me. Again, it's the personal palate. I sipped on some New Riff 8 year bourbon and rye tonight and just get more fulfillment out of those than I do the Old Grand-Dad.
You may have gotten an "off" bottle...mine is all the lovely balanced bourbon notes of an EHT BP Bourbon, with a li'l twist of rye. Very nice! But I only paid $160 for mine, which may have helped
They held this back for 2 years. The laser code is from 2022 from what I’ve heard. Maybe there’s something to that. Additionally, the distillation source is even more cryptic than the straight rye (which I like). Thanks for the honesty. That said, the retail on this is low. You won’t find it for that, but it’s not BT’s fault. I’d be a lot more disappointed at $500 than $100! I’d still buy it at retail bc I’m an EHT fanboy, but not for more than $150 if I got super lucky. Cheers!
I had a sample of the base EHT rye a few weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I recall it being a classic rye, very oily mouth feel, and a solid finish for 100 (?) proof.
I've definitely seen some other reviews that suggested this release was a bit of a miss from Buffalo Trace, which is rather surprising considering that they are known for being very consistent (and high quality) with their periodic releases. I don't think other reviewers have disliked it quite as strongly as you do (perhaps that's your strong dislike for grassy flavors in whiskey, a dislike which I share). Regardless, you know that we who watch and support you regularly appreciate the fact that you don't sugarcoat your thoughts on a whiskey! Knowing you dislike something just gives your viewers more information when we decide if something is worth chasing down! Obviously there are going to be others out there who love this whiskey, and that's great! They are just as right to love it as you are right to hate it.
100% agree. Buddy poured me a oz and after a sip I thought my palate was messed up. 2nd sip spit it back in the glass. Dog water for sure. Honestly this is concerning as the last new releases have been terrible.....Travellers and now EHTBP Rye. Dont have high expectations for Sazerac.
Cam…do we know the mashbill? Is this big brother of straight rye? I just watched FM review and he exclaimed how good it was. 90s score for him. Interesting as I love eht straight rye and could say that turned me into a rye lover!
I agree with you partially, but disagree with you partially on this whiskey. I'm not sensitive to that grassy note you get on BT products sometimes. Maybe I get a hint on the finish. There is certainly nothing signifying age coming off of this whiskey. No darkness or oak or tobacco or leather notes. I am reminded what Bob Dylan once said and is fresh on my mind because of "A Complete Unknown": "You can be beautiful or you can be ugly, but you can't be plain." I think this whiskey is plain. That is its sin. I had it with friends and we were talking about all of the ryes that we had just this year that were far better than this one.
Damn what a beatdown LOL. I didn't think it was that bad... wish you had a full bottle to let it open up.... But I really think comparing it side by side to this years Handy (which was very good) highlighted the "flaws" of EHTBP Rye and made those flaws go from bad to worse on your palate. Anyways, i def understand your disappointment. No one should pay more than $200 secondary for this bottle (I put it that high because its a Batch 1 collectors bottle).... but my most disappointing bottle was Makers Mark Cellar Aged 2024, was hoping for a repeat of 2023.
Lol, no I didn’t. Read the other 5 comments with folks saying the same thing. I had 2 dif samples, both the same, and I’m not alone in this opinion about this bottle.
You sure the guy who sent you a sample didn't try to pull one over on you and send the sample of some cheap whiskey he likes to "prove" its as good as ehtaylor barrel proof? What you are describing... sounds like when I put a barrel spiral in a bad, young whiskey and it doesn't work out.
I absolutely agree. It's just not very good. Its just a messy, poorly put together rye. With that being said, i highly recommend trying the Barrel Seagrass Grey Label 16yr @ 133 proof. I think it is the closest rivalry to THH.
I got a EHT Single Barrel that was such a disappointment. This bottle had an uncharacteristic high rye bitter note - maybe something from the barrel itself. I’d much rather have the Small Batch. I guess that is the fun of single barrels.
I’ll never trust a review from a sample… sorry, but we don’t even really know if that is what the person says it is, kinda like buying an open bottle on secondary…..
@@DrumsAndDrams I blinded it against THH with six people and they all picked the EHT. I like it so much that I bought a backup. I'm not normally a rye drinker and I don't come up with half a dozen tasting and smelling notes like whiskey tubers, but I know what I like and I know a drain pour. Everybody has a different pallet.
Don't apologize for honesty when reviewing a product.

You are NOT the only UA-camr to tear this one apart! This batch should have never been bottled!!!
Keeping it real. Keep it up!
Passed on the EHTBP Rye on the rumor it was flawed. Just grabbed a GTS 2024, so ending the year on a high note.
Absolutely got the better bottle. 24 gts is incredible
We need more videos like this. Solid review.

Ogd 16 was at least good whiskey. The price tag was just too much. Should’ve been 125$ max

Unicorn Auctions lists it as a 2022 so I think you’re spot on.
Call a spade a spade. Honesty is always crucial when discussing such expensive bottles.
Ive yet to see anybody giving the BT rye a positive review 😮
I was given a bottle for free, It was a positive experience and good whiskey for the price ;)
What are your thoughts on the regular EHT rye? Apologies if you already covered it, but honestly just curious.
