Nothing will ever replace Animated's original style or the impact the show had on me when it was airing. That being said anytime animated gets another day of acknowledgement actually keeps me going, its nice to see an old friend get another day in the sun. The fact that Slipstream has gotten multiple reincarnations alone shows how Animated's influence is still felt today.
There was only one person I wanted to hear from regarding this figure, and that was the number one TFA fan of all time. I was not disappointed. Especially by the tone of this video. It wasn’t a rant, or full of whining, it was a genuine attempt at sorting out feelings for a figure. All while maintaining the fun tone of TRDQ. Good stuff. Also does the theory that Legacy Bulkhead is in fact Animated Universe and not prime tickle anyone’s fancy?

To me he’s just G1 Bulkhead not Prime or Animated Bulkhead. edit: And a reason is that besides looks is because Mark I believe even said it was meant to be just a G1 Bulkhead and marketing decided that he should be and have “Prime Universe” attached to the figure.

Gavin feels EXACTLY what I feel just in my case it's Prime Arcee, I absolutely love her but man did that Legacy release upset me in ways I didn't even realise. However, I got lucky on eBay & managed to get the PRiD Deluxe Arcee for cheap which has been great & rather nostalgic in a way as I owned the BH version of her so it is really nice to have her back in my collection again.
I like it and feel this one is a far better G1-ification than Arcee, Bulkhead or Knock Out. This still feels like Prowl. It's got all the elements he had just run through a filter, unlike those toys who barely had any resemblance to the characters.
Legacy Arcee was technically reminiscent of her Prime design, but the sculpt and details were so deformed and watered down that it just felt like a minicon cosplaying as her. Bulkhead on the other head was a true G1 figure but I think it succeeded to better emulate the spirit of the character, thanks to an excellent head and nice body bulk. Plus the design was a nice blend between his Animated, Prime and Bayverse counterparts. As a "G1ification", it was a good result. This Prowl on the other hand is less of a G1ification and more of a homage to the character, I think
I feel like the main problem is the need for g1 ification. Like they never had to do that it's a multiverse story they can make the guys look like their universe's style and Noone would complain.
I'm definitely not a fan of Transformers Animated, but I totally respect the show for it's passion for the history and legacy of Transformers, and I admire the fans who have such a strong passion for it. Personally, I'm super excited to get this figure, because while Animated's style wasn't my cup of tea, I absolutely loved it's take on Prowl. His colours, his altmode, all fantastic. And of all the Animated characters that could have shown up in Legacy, I'm glad they chose Prowl. And even though I can fully agree that this is a step down from the original toy, I'm still stoked to pick this guy up, and that in some small way Animated will be represented on the shelves of my collection, even though it's one of the eras of Transformers I don't have a connection with.
@@Omabatfartsbruh I watched through the entire series one summer a few years ago. I can respect and appreciate what it did and the impact it's left on the fandom, but it wasn't my cup of tea. And that's what makes Transformers such a special franchise, in that it has such a variety of different series and continuities that it can appeal to lots of different fans with different tastes.
I feel ya gavin, the legacy armada releases make me wish they literally retooled the old armada molds with proper knees and elbows, instead of homogenizing everything within the line across series and making me pay $35 for a voyager
I don’t know, I think the Armada releases, and Override are basically perfect for the characters that they’re supposed to be. Yes, I do miss the minicons, yes, Starscream’s swords suck, but the figures themselves are as good as I think they could possibly be for their price points. …okay, Starscream’s QC is fucked, but a package refresh could fix that, since it’s not the design of the toy, that’s the problem, but how it was manufactured.
im sort of thankful the unicron trilogy designs are vaguely "g1-ish" enough to avoid too many drastic changes. other than starscream's wings being a bit broader the inaccuracies on the armada and cybertron guys dont feel as much like homogenization as, say, 90% of bulkhead. at least hot shot and override get to have rounded limbs. maybe i'm just coping by settling for less here
This is exactly how Prime fans felt when Bulkhead and Arcee were previewed, yeah. And that makes it even more galling that Hasbro did an additional design pass on Skyquake to make him look more like the Prime character... but didn't think to do the same with Animated Prowl.
Love it or hate it, Derek will be missed and either way he’s inspired you, me, us. He inspired everyone who watch animated which is why this feels so emotionally raw. Maybe
The thing I try to remember is that Legacy isn't replacing Animated, Prime, The Unicron Trilogy or whatever Those shows and figures still exist and they're not going anywhere. Tobey Maguire was still Spider-man after Andrew Garfield came along. They're just different versions of the same idea.

Mine arrived yesterday, though still haven't opened it. But I can understand the feeling here. As A version based on Animated Prowl, it does its job very well, but if you were hoping for THE Animated Prowl himself, then yeah, it doesn't quite hit it quite well. Think down the line they might go for Studio Series to make more show accurate versions with better engineering, albeit with a heftier price.
I was expecting a fun little toy review and got a gut bunch. Wyatt should go down as integral in the history of Transformers as a franchise, such a hero
Much like how Legacy Arcee was used to make a wonderful Road Rocket, I’m mostly interested in this mold to see what obscure character he can he retooled into.
Personally, I love this guy, and ill explain why, because I guess im going to get a bit emotional about it. It IS Prowl, no question about it, it isn't a half baked piece of plastic like Prime Arcee and Knockout. When I look at Legacy Prowl, it's a nice reminder to the good times of Animated, not a grim reminder that it isn't completely identical to the original design. It's a perfect blend of what was and what is, and we really shouldn't be picking it apart to complain that it isn't what it should be. Unlike the others, it owns this design because it's unique. It had so much care and love put into this particular bot, unlike Knockout who was just SS86 Jazz, or Arcee, whose body clearly wasn't designed with her in mind. And think about it. Wyatt put so much love, time and care into his Animated designs, and worked with the toy designers to make sure they were as close to the model as possible while still being able to transform. The love is still there, even after all this time. Is the figure perfect? Of course not, every figure has flaws. But the LOVE is still there, even if it looks different.
I’d have to agree with your take, even if I don’t mind Knockout and Arcee. Also like, not even the G1 characters are IDENTICAL to how they used to be, just closer than some of the others
man, I usually watch your videos and love the humor but the part where you contributed a few words to the show designer was so wholesome my eyes were more soaked than my bed as a child
I personally love how well it came out. Personally I'd change the head a little but I like it. It will never be the same as before but I've come to accept that.
Uhhh I’d look at the grid model if I were you Uhhh yeah they were going to go with an original head but.. it’s oddly wide so yeah I’m glad they gave him more if a helmet and hey he still has a chin so win lose win
I’m not sure if Hasbro’s ever done this, but I’d love it if instead of releasing G1ified toys of Animated characters, they just took the old molds and updated them with ankle tilts or whatever. Or just reissued them with no modification. The originals could use some improvement in some areas, but I’m not sure sacrificing their identity is worth it. That said, I’m still planning on picking the new Prowl up to go with Legacy Bulkhead for a G1 version of the Animated team.
Yeah, crazy how G1 and Beast Wars figures get reissued every other month, yet the Unicron Trilogy, Prime, Animated, and Classic Bayverse toys haven't been on shelves for at least a decade

The pursuit of a “unified” aesthetic in Legacy is a flawed one, in my opinion. Waters down anything it adapts into a flavorless grey sludge. If they didn’t shoehorn every design into a “G1” esque aesthetic and instead mixed and matched existing designs with aesthetics from the past (for example: something like Animated Prowl but through the lens of the Cybertron or Bayverse aesthetics). They aren’t weird enough with it, there’s room for so much more potential in Legacy than what’s currently being done imo
Wasn't quite prepared for a TRDQ episode to drop the breezy comedy vibes for a good chunk and just be so genuine for a bit. Was really interesting to dive into the more human element of it all. From the legacy of DJW himself to the designers currently working on the line, it's clear there are people who love Transformers working on it, even if these redesigns understandably miss the mark for some or even many. I personally have liked these redesigns. But the genuine dissatisfaction from those who cherish the original series so much also has me hoping we'll see some screen accurate designs at some point. Studio Series is starting to morph into the line more focused on screen accuracy as they branch out from the movies, so maybe it's about time for Studio Series Animated and Studio Series Prime?
Exactly how I feel both about his figure and Legacy as a whole put better than I ever could. The figures are fun, good... great even, but the uniform G1-ness of it all and lack of anything new, adventurous or exciting about it fills my heart with sadness. I always said Animated wouldn't fit the Legacy aesthetic... I hate being proved right.

Hasbro is obsessed with making everything G1 and it sucks. You say Transformers will always change, and they should, but Hasbro, like any corporation, hates change and individuality. It's a miracle that Earthspark's main characters are new guys. I count myself lucky that they left the Beast Wars and Unicron Trilogy aesthetics as they were. But Animated is also one of my favourite Transformers lines, and it's really crappy that they've decided that it would sell better if they stripped it of its beautiful, unique style.
Well I don’t come to this channel to feel emotions but darned if that isn’t what happened anyway. I feel similarly about this toy and it’s genuinely kinda nice to know that feeling is shared.
Frankly, I'm super impressed by the quality of those decade old Animated toys. I found an Animated Megatron at a thrift store about a year ago and he is on par with or even outperforms modern generations megatrons in articulation.
You know what Gavin, I've thought about it and I've played with them both a bit and honestly, aside from the looks, I think I like the new one more. The original nails the look, obviously, Animated toys look like they've been pulled right off your screen, we all know that, but in every other way... It's just done better, you know? It's got more articulation, it holds poses better, lord knows I'm fighting for my life trying to get the original standing up in even the simplest of the ways you're doing in this video. The mobility on his head makes him so expressive. Even the ninja star fits better in his hand than the old one's do. I just have a better time playing with it. And it really does fit in well with my other Generations toys - ER Optimus, Legacy Bulkhead, the closest third party Bumblebee I could get and now this Prowl are at the center of my hero shelves, and they look amazing together. Animated Ratchet is there as well, but as much as I love that design too, he looks out of place. I do understand what you're saying about the real legacy and the connection you have with the show and the timing of Derrick J Wyatt's passing. Animated was 'my' Transformers too, since I just missed Beast Wars and wasn't interested during the anime era. I love those characters and those designs. But those toys still exist, and they're still great, and from what I've heard I don't think they're even showing their physical age that much yet. This existing and being great in its own way doesn't diminish them.
Within these Generations lines, the big battle is not between the Autobots and Decepticons, but rather WHO the line is for and WHAT the objective is. It is a delicate line between the Transformers fans and the more casual buyers; Sometimes a figure strikes gold, while others struggle given the limitations imposed by the 'rules' of the line, like poor Prowl here, while Dragstrip is the winning figure for me.
Also, odd thing about the last comment regarding Legacy Arcee and to a lesser extent bulkhead and knockout, it’s a weird thing. I feel like people weren’t not fond of them because they were different but because they weren’t what they expected design wise and they didn’t like the changes but Skyquake’s reception seems to be much more positive among G1 and Prime fans alike. I genuinely don’t know why
I kinda like the ugly handlebars at the top of his robot mode. It reminds me of the Vernier jets on the Gundam MK-2 and the Hyaku Shiki from Zeta Gundam.

Yeah you kinda hit the nail on the head. I will still get it, but the excitement of "omg animated" has faded to more of a dull acceptance. Had planned a samurai armour add on and I just don't know anymore
I honnestly like this approach, both for Prime and Animated, for one simple reason : the original toys were fantastic. We have the original Prowl and he's great! making him again wouldn't be interesting, same for the others, but it can get hard. This feel you have with him is exactly how I felt about Knockout, sure the toy is good, better than the old deluxe maybe even, but it..ain't Knockout. Dude has none of the slick, pointy and cocky personnality of the character he's supposed to be.
some times you just cannot win, and this figure is one solid example of why everything about it is right, or right enough as it should be, nothing is done poorly or in a wrong way, it's a good figure, it gets the character, it gets the mood but it lacks what made TFA it's own thing; the disproportions, the exageration, the feeling that only the tv serie and a very selected few of the toys got and it's no one fault; it is not the original toy, and it should not be, it's another thing. but that's the problem itself, it's another thing a good thing, but another thing
This video resonated pretty well with me. I totally agree with the sentiment that this figure will not live up to the original, and how could it? DJW's work was truly unique and brilliant, and nothing could ever perfectly recreate what he did. But I'm glad this figure got made at the same time. I do really like the proportions of the body but the head does not speak to me. I modified my Legacy Bulkhead to look more like animated and I'll probably do the same here. This figure also means we're probably closer to a Lockdown and Lugnut as well, the latter being much more exciting for me. Although this may not be the most perfect representation I still think it's very quality and commendable.
for me, it’s the head that really flubs it. prowl had this long, thin bonce in animated, but they’ve applied the width of g1 prowl’s head to it (probably for a repaint down the line) and it just truly doesn’t work. he doesn’t look like he has a big Animated Chin, he looks like his mouth is too high up.
Honestly I don't really see the point in whining for over half the video's lenght about how special Animated was (and believe me, as someone who grew up on animated, I can appreciate it more than most). Of course it's not going to be the same as it was before, because that's how time works. Things move on, and I don't see how pinning the blame of how you feel about the passage of time on a toy meant to celebrate a unique moment in history. This didn't feel like a review of Legacy Prowl, it felt like an excuse to vent about how much better things were back in the day. Just a little dissapointed by that.
Excluding the final bit, yeah, this is the rectification I yearned for ever since 'Prime universe' stuff got revealed. Sure, the toys are great, as many people keep telling me, and I would've had no issue if they just didn't slap the 'prime universe' label on it. Because it would be easier to accept new version of a character than recieve it as a homage, that's basically saying "this is the best it'll get". Yea, It's just whining, but it's a bad feeling in the gut how people who like it try to make me be in the wrong for disagreeing with them, even comparing me to the whiners of geewunners.

Style of TF figures Kinda like the basic idea of Cyberverse, just have all the characters ALL THE TIME, and with how many animated version of TF characters Wyatt created (even ones that never made it into the show) seemingly just cause he loved the Transformers franchise so much, I think there's something to be said for this honoring DJWs legacy

I am happy for at least the acknowledgement of Animated's existence on Hasbro's end, but I do feel you with this. I don't hate the design, not in the slightest. I actually quite like it, but when comparing him to the original design it doesn't hold a candle. That being said, I'm still hoping for some of Animated's original characters to get Generations versions. I want Lugnut more than anything else.
Animated is my favourite show ever. It's what I grew up on. Being a little awkward child in school and coming home to watch the new adventures of Optimus and Co that my mum recorded for me helped me. Meeting Marty Isenberg at TFN in 2019 was an absolute treat, along with the season 4 script. But hearing about Wyatt's death hit me so hard. That man wasn't just an artist, he was Transformers: Animated. He kept breathing life into it, even years after it ended. He was divine. Now Prowl is nowhere near being my favourite Animated character, that has to go to Blackarachnia. From her design, to her character feeling like she had been left and abandoned by her friends and not being able to be herself, she means so much to me. Without Wyatt's art style and Summer's voice, Blackarachnia wouldn't be like she is. But seeing Animated get at least some love has got me so excited. I can't wait to pick Prowl up in Smyths like I did when Tesco stocked Transformers. I am mixed on this figure. He looks good, but doesn't feel like Prowl. I understand you Gavin, he's... odd
This new update just feels unnecessary. The animated series has like the one toyline that DOESNT need new takes. Most of them were perfect toys because they were designed with the animators to make sure they transformed EXACTLY like they did on the show. If they were going to do new animated toys, why not focus on characters who never got toys like Cosmos or Red alert? Personally, I think removing DJW’s iconic art style is kind of a slap in the face (especially considering DJW’s passing a while back). It’s like Hasbro precisely extracted all of the soul his designs had in exchange for your wallet. As a huge animated fan, I don’t like how they’re going about these “animated universe” figures and will probably only get them if they’re on a huge discount. (Sorry for the essay, I just have very strong feelings when it comes to how Hasbro treats animated).
Though I tend to mostly agree with the whole "G1 is the pinnacle of the designs for them!" Mentality, though, im not a fan of how that overrides creativity in favor of being stuck in a period not many people, myself included, experienced. Animated and the 07 films were my proper introduction to the franchise, and though I absolutely love legacy and legacy prowl, I do feel some of his uniqueness was lost in the translation of a unique design into a g1-ified redesign. That extends to the prime versions aswell, they don't look unique in a line that is all about what has been. But I do really love this prowl though, chefs kiss.
Ok so im an animated purist, I was introduced to the franchise by this show. As you say, mabe im a animated "geewunner" but it is hard for me. I was losing my shit when this dude was announced, but now that is possible for me to get it, I dont feel like trying out g1 versións of this. Maybe later down the line, since im way more exited for legacy armada stuff. This just feels odd. And also, R.I.P to the man himself, derrick will always be that dude who made my childhood so much better

Despite liking the figure, I do have to agree with your stance on the stylization of this figure and the Prime characters. Bulkhead is a great update to Bulkhead, but he just isn't Prime Bulkhead, Arcee is good but her waist is too floppy and could have used a more dynamic head sculpt, Knock-Out should have had his chest retooled to have the middle fold down and make it look a little more like his Prime counterpart, and Prowl definitely could have used a better concealed bike mode and a slightly tweaked face, maybe with sharper glasses and a smaller chevron on his head. The odd thing is, when I got him, I had the opposite experience of yours. I ended up getting stupid giddy over having a new Animated figure, let alone of a character I wanted to see get a modern update the most, that can go along with my Generations and Studio Series figures. Despite my optimism towards this figure, I do hope that Prime Skyquake is more in line with what Animated and Prime characters will look like in Legacy in the future and that Prowl was just a figure too late in production to change.
That’s how I felt when they first revealed Prime Legacy Bulkhead and Arcee…they just lack the soul of what made me love those characters. It’s the same thing here since I love Animated too. The G1nification of these designs just isn’t for me. But for what it’s worth I think the designers did a better job at keeping Animated Prowl a lot more faithful to the original, rather than Prime Arcee and especially Bulkhead
i know my opinion doesn’t matter (filthy prime fan) but i love arcee’s legacy toy, yes there are issues but the design is great. An update to my favorite arcee, and heaps better than earthrise or studio series. My issue with bulkhead is that he doesn’t feel like prime bulkhead. If they left tfp of the box for him, fine just a new version. But we got a generic bot with no personality, nothing bulkhead-ey. The big chunky guy is no more and its sad. Anyways good review, super funny as always
I mean the original toy will always be there and this is ment to be a g1 style take on the character, the fact the line feels homogenous means it's working to give it a conhesive style.
The proportions on this toy aren't as cartoony as I'd like, but one thing I will give it is that the crotch looks a little bit better. I mean, I get Prowl was pretty skinny in the show, but I don't recall his pelvis being a literal pencil.
This figure looks like a cool bike-former. But does it feel like animated Prowl? Ehhhhhhhhhhhh There’s a few animated designs I really want to see show up in legacy. I really want to see Blackarachnia and Lugnut. I think that Blackarachnia would be a pretty easy retool, and Lugnut would be cool regardless of how well the animated aesthetic is captured.

I've got similar feelings about Legacy Armada Starscream. Can't really pinpoint what it is - maybe it's because it feels like it has more IDW influence than Armada, but everything feels a bit off. Can't say I've got the connection that you've got with Prowl Gavin, here's hoping Animated gets something cool in the future.

Honestly.. I wish I'd managed to get more TF:A figures as a kid, but... I don't know, I feel like this figure is a good (emphasis on good, not Great.) way to get a great character from an amazing show. Not the definitive figure, by far. The original feels a whole lot better as a "Perfect" figure. Maybe one day, we'll get Masterpiece Animated, or.. Maybe not. Regardless. TF:A is still my favorite series. Rest in Peace Derrick J. Oh yeeeeah TFA Prowl's toy was great! I thought the Legacy toy looked good until you put them side by side. Maybe Legacy Prowl is just his younger, stumpier cousin Rowley or whatever.
It's a good idea, and a good toy, but it's very different from the original design, I get what they wanted to do, but in execution it just hasn't got the same feel. I appreciate what they're doing but I don't think we will ever get anything close to animated again. Maybe someday we could get a new series that has one major voice, one main mind behind it. But at the moment everything is so uniform that it doesn't feel like they have room for it
I absolutely agree with you Gavin. Animated was so cool because of how sleek and almost superhero like the proportions of the characters were (Animated's early title was even called "Transformers Heroes") so to see Animated Prowl return with those very generic G1 boxy proportions? It doesn't feel right. Like Hasbro sucked all the uniqueness out of the design. Now he looks like some random background character from that one G1 episode you don't remember. I can't say I'm excited at the rumored Animated Optimus that will be releasing later this year if he's going to look like every other G1 inspired Optimus Prime. It's a fine toy for what it is I'm sure, but he just doesn't feel like the character to me.
Not to be contrarian, but as someone who didn't grow up with Animated and doesn't have either toy in hand (yet) I think both figures look equally good in their own way. If Hasbro did reissues more often maybe the reaction wouldn't be so polarized.

I like it and feel this one is a far better G1-ification than Arcee, Bulkhead or Knock Out. This still feels like Prowl. It's got all the elements he had just run through a filter, unlike those toys who barely had any resemblance to the characters.
Legacy Knockout broke my heart.
Legacy Arcee was technically reminiscent of her Prime design, but the sculpt and details were so deformed and watered down that it just felt like a minicon cosplaying as her.
Bulkhead on the other head was a true G1 figure but I think it succeeded to better emulate the spirit of the character, thanks to an excellent head and nice body bulk. Plus the design was a nice blend between his Animated, Prime and Bayverse counterparts. As a "G1ification", it was a good result.
This Prowl on the other hand is less of a G1ification and more of a homage to the character, I think
I feel like the main problem is the need for g1 ification. Like they never had to do that it's a multiverse story they can make the guys look like their universe's style and Noone would complain.
I don’t even recognize Legacy “Knockout” as being Knockout. Maybe it’s his long lost brother Blockout or something.
The thing is, why give it that filter? Why must everything be G1?
I'm definitely not a fan of Transformers Animated, but I totally respect the show for it's passion for the history and legacy of Transformers, and I admire the fans who have such a strong passion for it. Personally, I'm super excited to get this figure, because while Animated's style wasn't my cup of tea, I absolutely loved it's take on Prowl. His colours, his altmode, all fantastic. And of all the Animated characters that could have shown up in Legacy, I'm glad they chose Prowl. And even though I can fully agree that this is a step down from the original toy, I'm still stoked to pick this guy up, and that in some small way Animated will be represented on the shelves of my collection, even though it's one of the eras of Transformers I don't have a connection with.

@@Omabatfartsbruh I watched through the entire series one summer a few years ago. I can respect and appreciate what it did and the impact it's left on the fandom, but it wasn't my cup of tea. And that's what makes Transformers such a special franchise, in that it has such a variety of different series and continuities that it can appeal to lots of different fans with different tastes.
I feel ya gavin, the legacy armada releases make me wish they literally retooled the old armada molds with proper knees and elbows, instead of homogenizing everything within the line across series and making me pay $35 for a voyager
I don’t know, I think the Armada releases, and Override are basically perfect for the characters that they’re supposed to be. Yes, I do miss the minicons, yes, Starscream’s swords suck, but the figures themselves are as good as I think they could possibly be for their price points.
…okay, Starscream’s QC is fucked, but a package refresh could fix that, since it’s not the design of the toy, that’s the problem, but how it was manufactured.
im sort of thankful the unicron trilogy designs are vaguely "g1-ish" enough to avoid too many drastic changes. other than starscream's wings being a bit broader the inaccuracies on the armada and cybertron guys dont feel as much like homogenization as, say, 90% of bulkhead. at least hot shot and override get to have rounded limbs. maybe i'm just coping by settling for less here

This is exactly how Prime fans felt when Bulkhead and Arcee were previewed, yeah. And that makes it even more galling that Hasbro did an additional design pass on Skyquake to make him look more like the Prime character... but didn't think to do the same with Animated Prowl.

Mine arrived yesterday, though still haven't opened it. But I can understand the feeling here. As A version based on Animated Prowl, it does its job very well, but if you were hoping for THE Animated Prowl himself, then yeah, it doesn't quite hit it quite well. Think down the line they might go for Studio Series to make more show accurate versions with better engineering, albeit with a heftier price.
I was expecting a fun little toy review and got a gut bunch. Wyatt should go down as integral in the history of Transformers as a franchise, such a hero

I'm glad it's a good toy, it reminds me of Popeye and I kinda want him on that basis alone.
Personally, I love this guy, and ill explain why, because I guess im going to get a bit emotional about it. It IS Prowl, no question about it, it isn't a half baked piece of plastic like Prime Arcee and Knockout. When I look at Legacy Prowl, it's a nice reminder to the good times of Animated, not a grim reminder that it isn't completely identical to the original design. It's a perfect blend of what was and what is, and we really shouldn't be picking it apart to complain that it isn't what it should be. Unlike the others, it owns this design because it's unique. It had so much care and love put into this particular bot, unlike Knockout who was just SS86 Jazz, or Arcee, whose body clearly wasn't designed with her in mind. And think about it. Wyatt put so much love, time and care into his Animated designs, and worked with the toy designers to make sure they were as close to the model as possible while still being able to transform. The love is still there, even after all this time. Is the figure perfect? Of course not, every figure has flaws. But the LOVE is still there, even if it looks different.

I’m not sure if Hasbro’s ever done this, but I’d love it if instead of releasing G1ified toys of Animated characters, they just took the old molds and updated them with ankle tilts or whatever. Or just reissued them with no modification. The originals could use some improvement in some areas, but I’m not sure sacrificing their identity is worth it.
That said, I’m still planning on picking the new Prowl up to go with Legacy Bulkhead for a G1 version of the Animated team.

The pursuit of a “unified” aesthetic in Legacy is a flawed one, in my opinion. Waters down anything it adapts into a flavorless grey sludge. If they didn’t shoehorn every design into a “G1” esque aesthetic and instead mixed and matched existing designs with aesthetics from the past (for example: something like Animated Prowl but through the lens of the Cybertron or Bayverse aesthetics). They aren’t weird enough with it, there’s room for so much more potential in Legacy than what’s currently being done imo

Wasn't quite prepared for a TRDQ episode to drop the breezy comedy vibes for a good chunk and just be so genuine for a bit. Was really interesting to dive into the more human element of it all. From the legacy of DJW himself to the designers currently working on the line, it's clear there are people who love Transformers working on it, even if these redesigns understandably miss the mark for some or even many. I personally have liked these redesigns. But the genuine dissatisfaction from those who cherish the original series so much also has me hoping we'll see some screen accurate designs at some point. Studio Series is starting to morph into the line more focused on screen accuracy as they branch out from the movies, so maybe it's about time for Studio Series Animated and Studio Series Prime?

Exactly how I feel both about his figure and Legacy as a whole put better than I ever could. The figures are fun, good... great even, but the uniform G1-ness of it all and lack of anything new, adventurous or exciting about it fills my heart with sadness. I always said Animated wouldn't fit the Legacy aesthetic... I hate being proved right.

Hasbro is obsessed with making everything G1 and it sucks. You say Transformers will always change, and they should, but Hasbro, like any corporation, hates change and individuality. It's a miracle that Earthspark's main characters are new guys. I count myself lucky that they left the Beast Wars and Unicron Trilogy aesthetics as they were. But Animated is also one of my favourite Transformers lines, and it's really crappy that they've decided that it would sell better if they stripped it of its beautiful, unique style.
We really need more Transformers Animated characters in the Legacy line and not to mention more Content that being Season 4.

Frankly, I'm super impressed by the quality of those decade old Animated toys. I found an Animated Megatron at a thrift store about a year ago and he is on par with or even outperforms modern generations megatrons in articulation.

You know what Gavin, I've thought about it and I've played with them both a bit and honestly, aside from the looks, I think I like the new one more. The original nails the look, obviously, Animated toys look like they've been pulled right off your screen, we all know that, but in every other way... It's just done better, you know? It's got more articulation, it holds poses better, lord knows I'm fighting for my life trying to get the original standing up in even the simplest of the ways you're doing in this video. The mobility on his head makes him so expressive. Even the ninja star fits better in his hand than the old one's do. I just have a better time playing with it.
And it really does fit in well with my other Generations toys - ER Optimus, Legacy Bulkhead, the closest third party Bumblebee I could get and now this Prowl are at the center of my hero shelves, and they look amazing together. Animated Ratchet is there as well, but as much as I love that design too, he looks out of place.
I do understand what you're saying about the real legacy and the connection you have with the show and the timing of Derrick J Wyatt's passing. Animated was 'my' Transformers too, since I just missed Beast Wars and wasn't interested during the anime era. I love those characters and those designs. But those toys still exist, and they're still great, and from what I've heard I don't think they're even showing their physical age that much yet. This existing and being great in its own way doesn't diminish them.

Within these Generations lines, the big battle is not between the Autobots and Decepticons, but rather WHO the line is for and WHAT the objective is.
It is a delicate line between the Transformers fans and the more casual buyers; Sometimes a figure strikes gold, while others struggle given the limitations imposed by the 'rules' of the line, like poor Prowl here, while Dragstrip is the winning figure for me.
Also, odd thing about the last comment regarding Legacy Arcee and to a lesser extent bulkhead and knockout, it’s a weird thing. I feel like people weren’t not fond of them because they were different but because they weren’t what they expected design wise and they didn’t like the changes but Skyquake’s reception seems to be much more positive among G1 and Prime fans alike.

Because Skyquake’s a far more faithful representation of his Prime design. And the new Leader Class is considered a better toy overall.
Animated is how you reimagine a Transformers series the right way. If Legacy Prowl’s head was a bit thinner, it would be better in my opinion.
I kinda like the ugly handlebars at the top of his robot mode. It reminds me of the Vernier jets on the Gundam MK-2 and the Hyaku Shiki from Zeta Gundam.

I honnestly like this approach, both for Prime and Animated, for one simple reason : the original toys were fantastic. We have the original Prowl and he's great! making him again wouldn't be interesting, same for the others, but it can get hard. This feel you have with him is exactly how I felt about Knockout, sure the toy is good, better than the old deluxe maybe even, but it..ain't Knockout. Dude has none of the slick, pointy and cocky personnality of the character he's supposed to be.

This video resonated pretty well with me. I totally agree with the sentiment that this figure will not live up to the original, and how could it? DJW's work was truly unique and brilliant, and nothing could ever perfectly recreate what he did. But I'm glad this figure got made at the same time. I do really like the proportions of the body but the head does not speak to me. I modified my Legacy Bulkhead to look more like animated and I'll probably do the same here. This figure also means we're probably closer to a Lockdown and Lugnut as well, the latter being much more exciting for me. Although this may not be the most perfect representation I still think it's very quality and commendable.
Animated Prowl is work of art, so it’s a shame Legacy dropped the ball. Perhaps I’ll wait for the inevitable repaint. Bulletbike or Road Pig maybe?

for me, it’s the head that really flubs it. prowl had this long, thin bonce in animated, but they’ve applied the width of g1 prowl’s head to it (probably for a repaint down the line) and it just truly doesn’t work. he doesn’t look like he has a big Animated Chin, he looks like his mouth is too high up.

Honestly I don't really see the point in whining for over half the video's lenght about how special Animated was (and believe me, as someone who grew up on animated, I can appreciate it more than most). Of course it's not going to be the same as it was before, because that's how time works. Things move on, and I don't see how pinning the blame of how you feel about the passage of time on a toy meant to celebrate a unique moment in history. This didn't feel like a review of Legacy Prowl, it felt like an excuse to vent about how much better things were back in the day. Just a little dissapointed by that.

Excluding the final bit, yeah, this is the rectification I yearned for ever since 'Prime universe' stuff got revealed. Sure, the toys are great, as many people keep telling me, and I would've had no issue if they just didn't slap the 'prime universe' label on it. Because it would be easier to accept new version of a character than recieve it as a homage, that's basically saying "this is the best it'll get". Yea, It's just whining, but it's a bad feeling in the gut how people who like it try to make me be in the wrong for disagreeing with them, even comparing me to the whiners of geewunners.
I get what you're saying but for me, I still have my old animated figures, nothing is gonna replace them and, part of me will always be a bit sad I'll never get to speak with DJW or get him to sign one of those figures

I am happy for at least the acknowledgement of Animated's existence on Hasbro's end, but I do feel you with this. I don't hate the design, not in the slightest. I actually quite like it, but when comparing him to the original design it doesn't hold a candle. That being said, I'm still hoping for some of Animated's original characters to get Generations versions. I want Lugnut more than anything else.
Animated is my favourite show ever. It's what I grew up on. Being a little awkward child in school and coming home to watch the new adventures of Optimus and Co that my mum recorded for me helped me. Meeting Marty Isenberg at TFN in 2019 was an absolute treat, along with the season 4 script. But hearing about Wyatt's death hit me so hard. That man wasn't just an artist, he was Transformers: Animated. He kept breathing life into it, even years after it ended. He was divine. Now Prowl is nowhere near being my favourite Animated character, that has to go to Blackarachnia. From her design, to her character feeling like she had been left and abandoned by her friends and not being able to be herself, she means so much to me. Without Wyatt's art style and Summer's voice, Blackarachnia wouldn't be like she is. But seeing Animated get at least some love has got me so excited. I can't wait to pick Prowl up in Smyths like I did when Tesco stocked Transformers. I am mixed on this figure. He looks good, but doesn't feel like Prowl. I understand you Gavin, he's... odd
This new update just feels unnecessary. The animated series has like the one toyline that DOESNT need new takes. Most of them were perfect toys because they were designed with the animators to make sure they transformed EXACTLY like they did on the show. If they were going to do new animated toys, why not focus on characters who never got toys like Cosmos or Red alert? Personally, I think removing DJW’s iconic art style is kind of a slap in the face (especially considering DJW’s passing a while back). It’s like Hasbro precisely extracted all of the soul his designs had in exchange for your wallet. As a huge animated fan, I don’t like how they’re going about these “animated universe” figures and will probably only get them if they’re on a huge discount. (Sorry for the essay, I just have very strong feelings when it comes to how Hasbro treats animated).
Though I tend to mostly agree with the whole "G1 is the pinnacle of the designs for them!" Mentality, though, im not a fan of how that overrides creativity in favor of being stuck in a period not many people, myself included, experienced. Animated and the 07 films were my proper introduction to the franchise, and though I absolutely love legacy and legacy prowl, I do feel some of his uniqueness was lost in the translation of a unique design into a g1-ified redesign. That extends to the prime versions aswell, they don't look unique in a line that is all about what has been.
But I do really love this prowl though, chefs kiss.

Ok so im an animated purist, I was introduced to the franchise by this show. As you say, mabe im a animated "geewunner" but it is hard for me. I was losing my shit when this dude was announced, but now that is possible for me to get it, I dont feel like trying out g1 versións of this. Maybe later down the line, since im way more exited for legacy armada stuff. This just feels odd. And also, R.I.P to the man himself, derrick will always be that dude who made my childhood so much better

Despite liking the figure, I do have to agree with your stance on the stylization of this figure and the Prime characters. Bulkhead is a great update to Bulkhead, but he just isn't Prime Bulkhead, Arcee is good but her waist is too floppy and could have used a more dynamic head sculpt, Knock-Out should have had his chest retooled to have the middle fold down and make it look a little more like his Prime counterpart, and Prowl definitely could have used a better concealed bike mode and a slightly tweaked face, maybe with sharper glasses and a smaller chevron on his head.
The odd thing is, when I got him, I had the opposite experience of yours. I ended up getting stupid giddy over having a new Animated figure, let alone of a character I wanted to see get a modern update the most, that can go along with my Generations and Studio Series figures.
Despite my optimism towards this figure, I do hope that Prime Skyquake is more in line with what Animated and Prime characters will look like in Legacy in the future and that Prowl was just a figure too late in production to change.
That’s how I felt when they first revealed Prime Legacy Bulkhead and Arcee…they just lack the soul of what made me love those characters. It’s the same thing here since I love Animated too. The G1nification of these designs just isn’t for me. But for what it’s worth I think the designers did a better job at keeping Animated Prowl a lot more faithful to the original, rather than Prime Arcee and especially Bulkhead

i know my opinion doesn’t matter (filthy prime fan) but i love arcee’s legacy toy, yes there are issues but the design is great. An update to my favorite arcee, and heaps better than earthrise or studio series. My issue with bulkhead is that he doesn’t feel like prime bulkhead. If they left tfp of the box for him, fine just a new version. But we got a generic bot with no personality, nothing bulkhead-ey. The big chunky guy is no more and its sad. Anyways good review, super funny as always

The proportions on this toy aren't as cartoony as I'd like, but one thing I will give it is that the crotch looks a little bit better. I mean, I get Prowl was pretty skinny in the show, but I don't recall his pelvis being a literal pencil.
At this point i'm a little affraid but still want some Beast Machnies love from Legacy.

There’s a few animated designs I really want to see show up in legacy. I really want to see Blackarachnia and Lugnut. I think that Blackarachnia would be a pretty easy retool, and Lugnut would be cool regardless of how well the animated aesthetic is captured.

I've got similar feelings about Legacy Armada Starscream. Can't really pinpoint what it is - maybe it's because it feels like it has more IDW influence than Armada, but everything feels a bit off. Can't say I've got the connection that you've got with Prowl Gavin, here's hoping Animated gets something cool in the future.

Honestly.. I wish I'd managed to get more TF:A figures as a kid, but... I don't know, I feel like this figure is a good (emphasis on good, not Great.) way to get a great character from an amazing show. Not the definitive figure, by far. The original feels a whole lot better as a "Perfect" figure. Maybe one day, we'll get Masterpiece Animated, or.. Maybe not. Regardless. TF:A is still my favorite series.

Oh yeeeeah TFA Prowl's toy was great! I thought the Legacy toy looked good until you put them side by side. Maybe Legacy Prowl is just his younger, stumpier cousin Rowley or whatever.

It's a good idea, and a good toy, but it's very different from the original design, I get what they wanted to do, but in execution it just hasn't got the same feel.
I appreciate what they're doing but I don't think we will ever get anything close to animated again.
Maybe someday we could get a new series that has one major voice, one main mind behind it. But at the moment everything is so uniform that it doesn't feel like they have room for it
I absolutely agree with you Gavin. Animated was so cool because of how sleek and almost superhero like the proportions of the characters were (Animated's early title was even called "Transformers Heroes") so to see Animated Prowl return with those very generic G1 boxy proportions? It doesn't feel right. Like Hasbro sucked all the uniqueness out of the design. Now he looks like some random background character from that one G1 episode you don't remember. I can't say I'm excited at the rumored Animated Optimus that will be releasing later this year if he's going to look like every other G1 inspired Optimus Prime. It's a fine toy for what it is I'm sure, but he just doesn't feel like the character to me.
Not to be contrarian, but as someone who didn't grow up with Animated and doesn't have either toy in hand (yet) I think both figures look equally good in their own way.
If Hasbro did reissues more often maybe the reaction wouldn't be so polarized.
