  • In this video I take a look at the Mahlkonig X54 Home Coffee Grinder. It is very much my first impression and in the coming weeks I will spend some time putting it through its paces.
For now this video is a run through the basic features of this grinder.
We’re celebrating ten years of coffee roasting throughout September and October so to celebrate this landmark we’re giving away one of these coffee grinders. To win you need to buy a bag of our 10th Anniversary coffee, Herbazu Tonio Barrantes and look for the secret code on the back of the bag. You can then enter this code on our competition page with a chance to win one of our weekly prizes as well as the Mahlkonig X54.
If there is something you would really like to know about this grinder, please let me know and I will look into it for my follow-up video.

I had to recalibrate it after receiving it and still need to set it around 01 for light roast beans and 02-03 for light espresso beans. Even then sometimes the shots come out so fast using a GS3 machine. I can’t say that I love this grinder… any thoughts? Thank you!

Interesting feedback thanks. I would describe our roasting as medium/light for espresso but well developed. I sit at around 04 and 05 even using our commercial machines. In my experience where a grinder won’t go fine enough to pull an espresso, the fault can sometimes lie with the coffee. Did you have a grinder before? If so how did that perform? I’ve always been wary of buying new on the market kit as there are sometimes teething problems but my model is doing well.

Have you heard of the Mahlkonig Vario? how does it compare? i live on the west coast of the United States. We have just decided on the Lelit Bianca , it seems to have all the feature we want. So we need a grinder too.

I’ve used the Mahlkonig Varionfor years and it’s been a good grinder. The x54 is a definite step up and just easier to use. The burrs are allowing me to draw more out of the coffee somehow. I think they’ve used their knowledge of the EK43 and Peak to create some new burrs.

Wich one do you prefer between Niche and X54 ? As price is pretty similar, choosing is difficult !

Check out UA-camr "Lifestyle Lab: Mahlkonig X54 Unboxing First Impressions". The guy has a Niche then he gets the Mahlkonig X54. hihi i hope the guy but a lottery ticket on that day. hihi

I think a lot of it comes down to how you want to use the grinder. The Niche does well as a single dose grinder, probably beating the Mahlkonig. So if you constantly change coffee then it makes sense to look at the Niche. If you drink espresso a lot and keep to the same coffee then arguably the X54 works better. Personally I prefer the burrs on the X54 as their design seems to draw more out of the coffee. It’s going to come down to personal preference which I think is a good thing.

Can you put it next to the oscar? I already have the oscar and wonder how it looks when paired with X54.

It would be a great option for pairing with the Oscar but only if you brew other methods as well such as cafetiere and filter. If you make espresso all of the time I’d advise an espresso specific grinder such as the MDH

I think they work well side by side. I have a photo here of them side by side if you can let me know where to send it? Drop me an email at info@carvetiicoffee.co.uk if that helps
