Unless, the Mazda speed protege, is modded, it's amazing, that it beat a car w/ at least 100 more H.P. Not sure which years, the 350z, had 278ish? H.P., and which years had 328 H.P... Maybe, the 350z, was a stick, and he had, lousy shifts ???

My friend, just picked up a 2009 3 and he swears his old Saturn, w/ 24 less H.P. has more punch...Not sayin' you're wrong.:):)..Just throwin' you some facts...Maybe the 350Z you beat, didn't know to get out the hole, being a stick...I always struggled, w/ my sticks :(:( Maybe he needed a Tune Up ?? Again, just throwing Facts and Thoughts...Good for your 3...I like Mazdas !! Peace :):):)
DAVID GEERLING I never said my 08 Mazda 3 was a MS3...what is wrong with people? The guy in the 350Z was racing me from about 50 mph roll. I watched the hood raise up while the 350z grabbed a lower gear probadly 2nd gear. I walked this guy so bad, as soon as he shifted into 3rd gear, the race was over, and I had beaten him by 2 car lenghts. I never got out of 2nd gear of the Autostick during this entire race. I could have run 2nd from 35 MPH all the way till 85MPH.. OEM specs are 85MPH is max in 2nd..but I have gone faster in 2nd. I could even downshift into 2nd from 3rd @ 75 mph, and if you think not, check out the specs for the car, it has a 2.0 direct injection, electric PS. drive by wire all stock.
DAVID GEERLING I also own a Blue 2003.5 MSP. The car dynoed over 220 WHP, with an intake, and cat back and a boost controller. I got over 40 hp with these 3 mods only. 170 HP is what the first 50 MP3s made in 2001..Those first 50 cars came with a J-spec engine and produced 170 WHP N/A. These cars are faster than a 350z because of weight and gearing. Gears can make a slow car fast. These MSPs are around 500 to 800 lbs lighter than the 350Z, and thats being conservative. Knowing that for each 100 lbs extra is equal to 10 WHP lost. Or it means the lighter car will perform like it has over 350HP. 600lbs=60 WHP or for each 100lbs you remove you will go .10 second quicker. This calculation formula changes once you're past 500lbs and times become faster and faster, being the less weight. This also works backwards, add 100lbs and lose a tenth of second off your overall time. Add 2 fat girls each weights 300lbs. Now your getting 600lbs added and going to lose 60 or more HP just from the added friction and drag from the added weight. I have a 88 RX7 with 280HP, car is 2165lbs. I run mid 12 seconds in the 1/4 mile @ over 120 MPH.. Also gearing has alot to do with acceleration. All Mazdaspeed Proteges and RX7s all have same gear sets 4:11 LSD and they also weight almost exactly the same. This is great for a baseline performance. This makes them capable of low 14 second ET, with no modifications, all stock.

Since your Intake, Cat back and Boost controller, only gave you 40 Extra Ponies...What else, got it up to 220 WHP ?? I would guess, it's the Protege w/ 170 H.P. ??? id say anything between 160whp-200whp for this msp, considering the fact that it dit great against a 350 z

I beat a new 350Z stick shift, in a stock 2008 Mazda3 Auto stick. I can pull over 80 mph in 2nd gear, 350Z had no clue..lol
