Tahus mask being used as a shield because of its power is cool, but I think the actual reason for the Hau is that it's Jallers mask, and Takanuva put Jallers mask on his speeder after he dies to the Rahkshi in the movie
There's a great episode of the TTV podcast where they're talking to the people behind the Bionicle Movie, and they were talking about how they had access to early designs for the Bionicle line to base their models off of and these prototype images really make some of the design choices add up.
I remember the prototype of Pewku. I was really looking forward to getting the green Lehvak Kal weapons pieces in green. Quite a shame those were not in the final version of the set.
it's really intresting to see more prototypes! also you forgot to mention thath in the makuta prototype there is a black vahi thath was originally glued on a nuva pakari also in the prototype.
The Rahkshi's prototype head is using a the forehead of Turaga Nuju's mask. Also worth noting: Prototype Makuta originally had a kitbashed mask that was comprised of the Vahi and Onua Nuva's mask (you can see both in the picture). This is also the same prototype the people working on the movie had when designing Makuta's appearance for the film. Explains some of the discrepancies between the set and CGI design (most notably the mask).
When I was a child, I thought the Kohlii stick could shoot the ball (I got into Bionicle in 2007, I thought projectiles were always a staple to the series). Was disappointed when I found out otherwise in 2017.
As weird as it might sound, I think my favorite part of that prototype Jaller is how the upper leg pieces are clearly painted yellow, I don’t know why but that just amuses me to know end.
A lot of prototype pieces and recolours are just cut glued and painted. That's why a lot of bionicle pieces share similar textures. It's far easier to just slap a few bits together to get the rough shape of what you're testing out.
Yep, the prototype kanohi Rode is one of my absolute favorite examples of that. Something about the painted technic pieces on Jaller just amuses me for reasons not even I’m aware of.
Funny thing about that prototype Teridax? It never sold. I was in contact with the seller at the time (even got some of the images used in this vid!) and the listing got taken down for reasons I'm unsure of.
Interestingly there's this one unused promotional image that showed the Matorans with Slizer arms instead of the Bohrok arms. Also if you look at the movie concept art the original plan for the Rahkshi was that they were going to have Kraana instead of Kraata.
So we're not going to speculate on that milky claw behind that disk? It's clearly part of some kind of rahi, like a mini crab version of the Fikou Spider or something, but it's still there ripe for speculation. And what about the fact that there were some pretty decent 3D printers back in the early 2000s? LEGO was a big company, they could afford those types of machines at the time, but wow!
Yea, companies usually have earlier access to machinery than commoners, probably because they cost much more to produce and maintain and all that. Not really that surprising.
@@funnyfoxbiome It's not so much that they had them, although even early 2000s still seems pretty early even though conceptually they would have been around longer, but it's more just the quality of them. You can still see the lines, but the overall resolution is still pretty good.
Baseless speculation time: I'd imagine a possible reason the prototype Rahkshi feet were all grey could have been that TLG were still deciding whether they could afford to produce them in more than one colour. I imagine molding a big specialised part like that is expensive enough in one colour, let alone six.
Rakhkshi was simply made on a 3D printer now. This can be seen in the details. We have not seen parts of this quality before in prototypes from 2002 (the year the kits were developed). We mostly saw parts made of clay or pieces of different parts glued together. But here it’s obvious that they printed it recently and pass it off as 20-year-old whiskey😂
3d printers existed in 2002. The entire concept of 3d printing was already thought up in the 1950s. The reason it wasn't commonplace for people to have 3d printers until recently is that such machinery was expensive to produce and maintain. Similar to how computers had existed for a couple of decades until being compacted enough to be installed at homes. The rahkshi could of course still be fake despite this, but not because it is 3d printed.
@@jakubwitkowski2964no it was common practice when doing prototypes for the masks especially, they just grab a piece and put another thing to it to get a rough idea of what they are going for. Makuta prototype mask was Onua and Vahi mask merged together. Until they finalized the concept.

That was Jaller's mask though so it was powerless but it was more symbolic.
@@Mate397 yes it was

9:13 : the strange piece is the middle part of the rakshi 3 parts upper torso :)

I'm still deeply disappointed that the Kohli ball piece wasn't actually a ball.
I remember having the bird one along with Jaller. So many sets over the years that I have forgotten about now a days.

Those "pincers" are Lehvak-kal's shield pieces though, as for the Hau that's not Tahu's but Jaller's.

Another thing i noticed about takanuvas vehicle is that it used a mctoran arm over the mask area.

I wish Bionicle was still made
Cool one of my fav biotubers hearted

Oh my god, imagine if we got those hand pieces in gold...

hey that ice rahkshi looks 3d printed
Just speculating, but the green probably allowed them to experiment with replacing it with different colors in programs like photoshop
Hmm... the close up photos of the Rakshi seemed weird to me... kinda like 3d printed texture, but not really...
If I remember correctly a lot of the prototypes were made with some sort of early version of 3d printing
Surprised you didn't mention that the silver prototype rahskhi head is a cut up Nuju mask
8:45 there's a black vahi in the middle
I wonder if theye planed to swap masks for onua and makuta i mean theye look simialair specialy the first gen onua mask and makuta (well obside down)
