I used to remember having a VHS recording that had a severe tracking issue and a speed locking issue, but that was a long time ago. It was originally an episode of America's Funniest Home Videos that was recorded on a Magnavox TV/DVD player/VCR Hi-Fi stereo VHS recorder, and I guess that throughout the years, my Sanyo VWM-800 Hi-Fi stereo VCR that I got from my local Salvation Army thrift store three to four years ago couldn't lock onto the tape speed. It wasn't my VCR, it was the tape and the VCR that it was originally recorded off from.

That is a weird kind of damage... Most tapes that have damage will just have a visible line running from top to bottom and not much wow and flutter. This tape has HUGE amounts of wow and flutter.

Is it bad for the VCR to play a damaged tape? I have some tape with some damaged parts, but they are playable. I tried them in more than one VCR, and they can get through them without eating the tape, without the picture being bad after passing that part. I had a few damaged tape-parts that weren't playable: the VCR turned off when reached that part, ate the tape again or the whole picture was white even on good tapes (but then it cleared by itself). But I cut those out. To be honest, I "like" damaged but playable parts. So, if the damaged tape plays in a way I wrote in the first half of this comment, then it won't damage the heads?
I think if the actual structural interety of the tape is fine, you should be alright. I believe the main issue that causes players to eat tapes ( and themselves) is the fact that the tape becomes elastic over years of neglect and becomes jammed when played at the speed VCRs play them at. My advice is to try them on a VCR you don't care about as much first to see if it gets eaten, and try to watch it so you don't break the VCR itself.
@@CJRussell I have already tried them in several VCRs and they play fine despite they are damaged (OK, at the damaged places there are lines in the picture, but when the VCR gets over this part, the picture does not remain white).
@@viktorianagy5043 It very well may be an issue that the head is dirty. Do you have any dry video head cleaner tapes? I tried that on my VCR and that cleared up my audio issues with it
@@CJRussell Heads can't be dirty, because, as I said, the picture is good on good parts of the tapes. (Dirty head means bad pic even on good tape; is it true?) Only a short part of some tapes is damaged. I remember that some were eaten in the past, some not eaten, but I damaged them when I opened their case. (Now I can open cassettes without damaging the tape; it was at the time when I was just learning how to do it.) I don't have cleaning cassettes, and I've read they're not recommended, because they are dangerous to the heads.
I know why the VHS tape is broken. And honestly the tape isn't fixable because of this. From research, I think the VHS could've have grown mold in some parts of the tape and also have dust marks all over it. The dust marks can make the lasers inside the VHS player think there's no source or frame there. It could also be a mildly tangled tape, like some of the frames aren't correctly in place (I guess?) Always make sure to check if your VHS is clean before using.
