I did some of this in Shanghai. I saw a nice little art piece for 650. I said I only have 100 take it or leave it. After him laughinag and saying that's silly I started walking away and he accepted. I probably could have gone even lower still.
lol im from beijing and dat place is full of fake stuffs. also theirs prices is 5x higher to foreigners. so if they ask u 200yaun for a shirt. just go 40 yuan directly. they can still earn money . trust me lol.
I'm so glad you know to suggest 10% of the asking price. I've been there and watched other videos who say 50%. Holy crap! Don't get ripped off aiming for that!!! One of the easiest suggestions I was able to do is telling them I was a volunteer, unpaid English teacher. Toss in some Chinese phrases, you'll get the best deals. Make friends with the shop keepers too, they do work together sometimes and will even put in a good word to lower their competitors profits lol. Also, flirt it up and try to find shop keepers who are drunk, they are really fun to bargain with.
OMG. this brings back memories. It is a sport of endurance and mental toughness. After 2 hrs I was drained. It was like fighting with your bf/gf. My advice is to the amount that you feel you would not mind if it becomes damaged after a month.
I went to the silk market in 2008, it was EPIC! I bought a few things, including a wii remote (which was real and worked) and it was way cheaper than back home. Its something like 8 floors, great time.
Try learning a few basic phrases in chinese, usually those considered to be tourists will never get the best prices, speaking a bit of the language will gain you far more respect and it automatically makes bargaining so much easier.
You'll get the best prices if you learn to speak a little Mandarin. Two things: 1: you can shop wherever you want and 2: they will love that you speak even a little bit of their native tongue.
yah i enjoy bargaining just recently i got a $40 airsoft gun for $22 at the flea market, ever since then i want to keep going back too see what kind of other deals i can get :D
I'll tell you one thing that I love about doing business with Chinese people. Even if you bargain them down they always deliver on their word. I only like to hire Chinese when I comes to labor . They work at a reasonable price , show up in time and take pride in their work.
Haha, I was there over the summer for two months. What I did was 1) speak Chinese, 2) kept the number the same, even when they say "go higher". Also, Silk Street Market is an expensive place to shop. What I have done is exploring other shops in other cities, get the idea of price first, then decide the price to bargain. If you decided to buy jade there, go for 10 yuan. A traditional Chinese dress, 65-75 yuan.
ok, im finding myself watching this one a day atleast until i go to china again :P its so funny! and u r lucky u found really nice people!! alot of the people i went to in beijing were kinda mean and if u walked away they didnt even care.
He he. I went there two weeks ago. I got a jacket "worth" 140 according to the seller but I bargain it so it only cost 10. My tip: Decide what you will pay before you buy! I works very well. I wanted to pay 50 for a football shirt and shorts that the seller wanted 500 for....
Great video, I laughed my ass off. Are the name brand items they sell knock offs, or are they just sold cheaper there since they're manufactured in China?
very nice video.. LOVE it most when they finally agreed to sell at a much lower price and managed to smile and even joke about it.. there still is a certain level of respect for customers with a somewhat decent manner, ... try the same thing in Vietnam and you will be so sorry.... you will be cursed and told to get... f**k... and much much more... and yes i am speaking from being a Vietnamese background for I would be told to F- off myself if i tried... Vietnamese Retailers + wholesalers sure have a lot more to learn... Go Guangzhou. can't wait to pay a visit
Now you can see how bad I.P theft is. Entire shopping malls of knock off’s! If you work for, or own a licensed trademark brand you can now see the enormous problem. I understand people need to wear clothes and use goods. But you don’t NEED a Coach bag and Oakley’s!
easiest way to stick to a price....think about how much u can buy it at home...and half that price! if that price isnt 10% of what they are asking for then u gotta work around it
My god, in the beginning i though you guys could be smart with pricing, but the worst part is you have been barging well, but they ripped you off 😂 next time anyone is going there, take your cellphone and go to taobao.com where you can check aaaaaal prices. Those shoes around 3:30 where around 80-110rmb and you payed more than 400 hahaha
Dude those chinese salespeople had really damn good english. Last time I went to the pearl and silk markets, they couldn't communicate in english worth a damn.
Dishonesty is a huge problem in China. Im really not a fan of bargaining. Even if you reduce the original price you can guarantee that as a laowai you'll be paying more. I am currently in the tourist hub of Yangshuo, Guangxi and its endemic here. Just greedy people trying to make more money from naive westerners. I recommend getting a Chinese friend to just buy things for you because even if your Chinese is good and you can bargain... they will try it.
These girls have quite good English, so I would say its easier bargaining with them than in other parts of China because they can't pretend to not understand. I can see the fun side of bargaining- it can 'jazz up' proceedings a bit, but nevertheless it can be easy to be ripped off. In a much more provincial Chinese city like Yongzhou, Hunan (where I taught for 4 months) its innevitable.
if ur chinese and u can speak chinese trust me. I have been to beijing. trust me i can speak perfect mando and it works always. Always bargain white folks always bargain
Some of them will grab on to your arm as hard as they can and not let you go until you buy it. They'll even start crying, but it's all just an act. ALWAYS go lower than the price you were willing to buy it at. It's all really fun, though.
Where is the fun and satisfaction in this? Customers need to walk and vendors need to get a fat lip for the attitude. Disrespect works both ways in the Silk Market.
i am sure if we pay the asking price, it is still really cheap... why do foreigners always feel the need to bargain wherever they go,,, but back home,, prices are set and they will pay top prices without moaning.. can be a laugh, but if serious shopping,, ??? who needs the stress..
There are so many people walking around in this mall. Why do they focus only the visitors? Are they racists? Don't give them the chance to treat you as an alien.
first off just to let you know i am Chinese so i know from experience if all the store owners are trying to get as much money from you as possible how does anything get sold because most Chinese people are pretty damn stingy
aww i love chinese ppl they r so sweet but not when it comes to money hehe... amazing how they even hold customers by hand... i'd be so turned on if they touch me like that.. hard to say no to such desperate people, i'd also feel sorry for them.
I did some of this in Shanghai. I saw a nice little art piece for 650. I said I only have 100 take it or leave it. After him laughinag and saying that's silly I started walking away and he accepted. I probably could have gone even lower still.
Shoulda kept walking and taught him a lesson
"Are you feeeevvveeerrr?!" Hahaha, that's hilarious.
This was one of the most memorable & entertaining parts of my trip to Beijing.
lol im from beijing and dat place is full of fake stuffs. also theirs prices is 5x higher to foreigners. so if they ask u 200yaun for a shirt. just go 40 yuan directly. they can still earn money . trust me lol.
Thank you for your honesty Chen Wu. A very respectable comment. I hope life in Beijing is treating you well.
The price has to include the sales persons' mutil-language service.
the first girl is funny, he punches the number and pauses and she says are you ok, its always a lot of fun in these places.
by the way, the item we bargain for was "silk", well decorated table panel...
I'm so glad you know to suggest 10% of the asking price. I've been there and watched other videos who say 50%. Holy crap! Don't get ripped off aiming for that!!!

wow..thks for the tip n hope it wil work..by the way how much discount did u manage to bargain...
OMG. this brings back memories. It is a sport of endurance and mental toughness. After 2 hrs I was drained. It was like fighting with your bf/gf. My advice is to the amount that you feel you would not mind if it becomes damaged after a month.
Hahahaha. This is so hilarious!! That girl is really cute, I've never seen any sales clerk like her in Chinalol
Bruh why they sound so rude to me lol.
If I had to bargain with them, my social anxiety will freaking attack me and letting me have a mental breakdown
I went to the silk market in 2008, it was EPIC! I bought a few things, including a wii remote (which was real and worked) and it was way cheaper than back home. Its something like 8 floors, great time.

that girl is actually sweet.
True that
No
3:11 "oh my gutsss" 😆
hahah love her "I'm not tough, I'm a very sweet girl"t
yah i enjoy bargaining just recently i got a $40 airsoft gun for $22 at the flea market, ever since then i want to keep going back too see what kind of other deals i can get :D
@salpey1 Yen is japanese money...300 yuan is actually 40-50 dollars
I'll tell you one thing that I love about doing business with Chinese people.

Absolutly true video. Had the same in Shanghai. The best way to have a good price is just starting wolking away.
Yeah, this is truly an art form more than anything else.
ok, im finding myself watching this one a day atleast until i go to china again :P its so funny!
and u r lucky u found really nice people!! alot of the people i went to in beijing were kinda mean and if u walked away they didnt even care.
Good video!
Absolutely agree - tested by me > Bought stuffs like a BOSS.
Just "walk away" lol it does really work in china, I know lol
No, (walk away) it always work in my country also 😂 not only china
ok, pleeaasse? (guy in yellow shirt)
so funny, i can't wait until i go!!!!!
Ohh mai Gat.........
just so u know, that shirt is only worth 2 RMB in China , so even if u bargain bk and forth, it's still profitable for the seller.
you boys did very well i got a pair of jordan sneakers from 1200yuan to 100, got it all the way down.
1:22 And your wife
can hand wash hahaha
"are you wanna kill me?"
lololololololo
"i don't even want this shirt"
"but if you want it, how much?"
lolololololololololol
u can bargain in shanghai or anywhere from china. good luck
Azadum mostly fakes
That would get extremely frustrating. Every single item is a knock off, that’s why everything is so cheap.
Those calculators are really powerful 😂
very nice video.. "why are you so stingy?!" "ah you wanna killah meeh?" haha...priceless
She says the same thing to this day every time he gets home from a 12 hour shift.
People say he's not such a happy guy as he used to be.
im stingy on my cloth , so i can treat the ladies right !! :D
Leo Messi AND IT'S MMMMIIINNNEEE
I am so looking forward to bargaining when I go to Beijing next year.
... you look forward to getting ripped off? OMFG. have a great time dummy. lololol.
How about you don't become a sucker for prices? China? What's the difference with those markets than the ones in Manhattan for instance?
You should have seen my Dad haggling with the locals over a motorbike rental in Bali. You would have been on my side.
Now you can see how bad I.P theft is. Entire shopping malls of knock off’s! If you work for, or own a licensed trademark brand you can now see the enormous problem. I understand people need to wear clothes and use goods. But you don’t NEED a Coach bag and Oakley’s!
hilarious for watching this, this is a culture literally in my hometown
easiest way to stick to a price....think about how much u can buy it at home...and half that price! if that price isnt 10% of what they are asking for then u gotta work around it
These sellers speak better English than Zhang Ziyi
My god, in the beginning i though you guys could be smart with pricing, but the worst part is you have been barging well, but they ripped you off 😂 next time anyone is going there, take your cellphone and go to taobao.com where you can check aaaaaal prices. Those shoes around 3:30 where around 80-110rmb and you payed more than 400 hahaha
Can you bargain for the girl also?
hahahahaha..... it happened to me too when i went to this market!
I am currently in the tourist hub of Yangshuo, Guangxi and its endemic here.

im not going above 3 ''omg :'('' that was hilarious
im goin to beijing soon... god looks so funny lol
I can't bargain with salesperson in china , It may be embarrassing for me to do it......................
Same here.........TAKE MY MONEY!😰
These girls have quite good English, so I would say its easier bargaining with them than in other parts of China because they can't pretend to not understand.
I can see the fun side of bargaining- it can 'jazz up' proceedings a bit, but nevertheless it can be easy to be ripped off. In a much more provincial Chinese city like Yongzhou, Hunan (where I taught for 4 months) its innevitable.
The shirt should have cost about 30 yuan less than the 60 he payed.
CHINESE COPIES 2012 FEB Prices - Tshirts in China no more than 60RMB each! Ties30RMB and Watches 300RMB..... TRUTH!
400 is still expensive
Best to remember the 1/10th of price rule... AND STICK TO IT/NO EXCEPTIONS.
you have no feelings dude. these people really need this money to.
i got to buy one of those shirts for 17rmb lol
that's not tips, that's common sense guys...those are basic bargaining skills...
I loved bargaining in fake markets in Beijing. Spent over 250 yuan there and got fake beats, and nikes haha
if ur chinese and u can speak chinese trust me. I have been to beijing. trust me i can speak perfect mando and it works always. Always bargain white folks always bargain
cool...bets of luck
lol the 2 shopkeepers disliked this
its such a tiring process LOL
The chicks are kinda cute & funny. I bought some cheap stuff there but never got the best price.
the chinese guy with the yellow shirt: OH MY GAAAAD :D hahaahahah
i laugh so hard when i watch this video.
I miss doing this, actually a fun part of living in BJ
it's so much easier to bargain if you look asian, just based on my experience.
as i watch this, i worry they might end up fighting. Bargaining always seems a too scary thing to me. I'm Chinese, btw. LOL
bargaining game
easy: chinese
medium: other asian
ultra hard: white boy
I helped a friend bargain from 360, drop down to 50 yuan. The lady said" the person is hard to bargain,I want to kill myself" all in chinese.
i want to go to XD that was so funny!
What money are we talking here?
Some of them will grab on to your arm as hard as they can and not let you go until you buy it. They'll even start crying, but it's all just an act. ALWAYS go lower than the price you were willing to buy it at. It's all really fun, though.
Punch 'em in the mouth and give them something to really cry about when you leave the place.
Where is the fun and satisfaction in this? Customers need to walk and vendors need to get a fat lip for the attitude. Disrespect works both ways in the Silk Market.
I would say 50% cheaper lar..
this shit is hilarious. thank god ur not bargaining for food cause you'd probably have sliver in it.
btw thx for the great tips
keep up the good work
i am sure if we pay the asking price, it is still really cheap...
why do foreigners always feel the need to bargain wherever they go,,,
but back home,, prices are set and they will pay top prices without moaning..
can be a laugh, but if serious shopping,, ??? who needs the stress..
Lol I suck at bargaining. When I was in Beijing, a guy sold me a fucking rubber thumb and a piece of cloth for 200 yuan. 200 YUAN!!
they still got 50% profit!
Very funny.
Why bargaining in china? Price are low.
Kjell Wennerholm its not. they usually inflate the price 10-20 times that the retail price to tourist.
There are so many people walking around in this mall.
Why do they focus only the visitors? Are they racists?
Don't give them the chance to treat you as an alien.
What a brutal waste of time and stress effort and energy. Let's argue about money.
This is sooooo 90s
first off just to let you know i am Chinese so i know from experience
if all the store owners are trying to get as much money from you as possible how does anything get sold because most Chinese people are pretty damn stingy
Thats a good quality u can washing machine and ur wife can handwash it
YOUR WIFE CAN HAND WASH IT FOR YOU OMG LOOL!!!
oh my gotttt !!! lmao :) :)
Hahahaha 😂 😂 😂
Are U OK?
as a Chinese local I never go to such places. full of fake and cheating. waste of time.
Very good bargaining and those chinese are friendly too. Haha..
aww i love chinese ppl they r so sweet but not when it comes to money hehe... amazing how they even hold customers by hand... i'd be so turned on if they touch me like that.. hard to say no to such desperate people, i'd also feel sorry for them.
@gus2673 hahaha thats what they want you to think... they probably make more than the average american im not even kidding
