I very much prefer the version where the Captain starts and we go clockwise. it makes it harder but more fun. Because the captain is not influenced by who wanted to go first
FWIW, the original French rules say that 1/ the captain goes first, and 2/ you win as long as at least one unicorn remains. The captain going first makes it a bit harder, since the extreme cannot just blast through. However, you win as long as you have one unicorn, so that balances out I think. Myself, I think I prefer the French rules.
I get why the game is played the way it's played, but I'd like to see it played where everyone wrote their answers down then everyone revealed them and the judge decides the order. It would force everyone to come up with an original answer instead of just modifying an existing answer, which to me, seems like a way of "gaming the system"...it's very gamery to just take someone else's answer and add a modifier to it. But I get it, there's a lot of fun to that, and it creates a meta too, so I get it. But the pure gamer in me would prefer to rank 5-7 answers rather than 3 answers and 2-3 modified answers...which seems more like an easy-mode version.
I agree. When I first heard about this game, I thought everyone would have to write their answers down. It would reduce the downtime and the captain won't forget everyone's responses.
I thought about something similar. So one person could say 5 bricks, and the next player could say 8 bricks or 3 bricks. Basically you could easily modify your answer to make it slightly better or worse than a preceding answer rather than coming up with something original.
Agreed. We're going to use use the equipment from another party game, "Just One" to allow people to write down their answers and then turn them all around at once. Easy to move them around to rank them, too, and then everyone puts their card next to their slate and we turn them over one at a time. Very fun.
Speaking the answers aloud is a more social experience, which must be what they are aiming for. Part of the joy is acting and getting real time credit for your jokes. It's also less fiddly than dry erase, which would ruin the game for me.
@@saintsalieri I agree, but I also get what people say about it feeling like "easy mode". My house rule would be that players have to give their answers in clockwise order with the captain going last.
Things I never expected on GameNight!: A two-somethings one-something else reference. Zoinks, Dave! This looks like one of the rare games my family would actually play. I look forward to the English release. It seems like it has that same "The Mind" magic where you feel really good when you get the ordering right, but aren't ever too angry when you get it wrong.
my favourite game! with The Crew! I have played with all player numbers from 4 to 10. We managed to win at 10! even though I thought it would be impossible! :-)
I have no earthly idea how Mike nailed his Cap-ten guesses in the 2nd game. It sounded like 5, 5.5, 5.75, 6, and 6.25 to me. And not in the order he guessed! Very impressive!
Reminds me of a Jackbox game. It gives me that vibe anyway, an in-person version of a Jackbox game. Looks like a great party game with higher player count...not sure it would shine as well with lower player count.
Thanks guys for the playthrough 😃 Would it be possible to at least not make a sound when showing the Gamegenic banners on the bottom while playing? It is distracting and I always have to rewind the video to get the rules explanation part I missed.
I think you should wait for everyone to come up with an idea and then tell them all one after another without that huge pauses because I had problems remembering your answers as well. Of course you could change or calibrate your ideas before saying them aloud but it could still prevent the pauses.
I think in this game players should have to write down their answers or just go around the table starting with the captain. With giving your answer when you're ready, players with middle numbers will just wait for the players with high or low numbers to go. I think this has no chance of winning the Spiel award.
BGG received English card translations from the original publisher, Cocktail Games. The English version of Top Ten was released by Exploding Kittens in January 2024, and it's called That Escalted Quickly: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/410382 -WEM
@@boardgamegeek Thank you for your reply. I have been looking for an original version in English. I actually bought the exploding kittens version. But it is not as nice. Slight changes in the rules and cheaper materials. For the same price as the original better version, of course. So I ended up buying the original version in German :)
Unfortunately it's not out in an English edition yet. Our copy was from Germany with some translations from the Spiel des Jahres jury. I believe it is coming from a US publisher soon. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
@mianova2662 I believe the US publisher that is doing the English edition has it slated for next year. Unfortunately we have to wait until their version is released. Thanks for the note and for watching. -Lincoln
Cocktail Games has not yet announced the licensee for an English-language edition of Top Ten, so any copies you found at the moment would be in another language. -WEM
In the times I've played this, people get creative the more they play. That's a lot of fun of the game. So letting them start in this manner is fine and sometimes they come up with fun answers. My comments about the answer water in the discussion is an example of this. That was our first round and things got better and more fun as we played. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
@@boardgamegeekOh, cool! This Thursday is keeping to get better and because I'm living in Sweden (it's evening here) I have something to look forward to in the weekend!
Grilled cheese is lower than tuna sandwich. You can only really discuss the bread in the picture of the grilled cheese. You can talk about bread and condiments on the tuna sandwich. Top 10 does seem backwards. Should be worst place in 10 and best place at 1.
That's an interesting comment, and shows how this game works, but is hard because we put our own experience on it. I had tuna sandwich below grilled cheese just because it would take more effort/energy to make it, and one is served cold whereas the other is hot. Doesn't mean I'm right, I'm just saying that's the beauty of the rules. :-)
I also think that fans of this game might want to checkout WAVELENGTH which is another game that has been featured on GameNight and has a similar theme. ua-cam.com/video/Lx4y0zOI58M/v-deo.html
I don’t get the need, none of the other board game content creators I watch are so forceful with their ads. BGG seems to be trying to suck every penny they can from their users. Makes me wish there was a good alternative.
Wow, this has been my favorite place to watch playthroughs for five years.... and these ADVERTISEMENTS are going to drive me away real quick. An absolutely horrible, short-sighted decision. Why stop there? Put ads on the player's shirts. Have them drinking and eating advertised products. Come on, let's completely ruin this channel!
Chuck I am sorry that they frustrate you. We have never had any sponsorships on our show and resisted them for a long time. But this partnership is the best possible situation for us. Gamegenic does not expect us to feature any specific games and want us to continue what we are doing. The only thing they want from us is to show how many sleeves are needed for the game, feature their products and show some ads. Our show has never made any profit other than the extremely small amount of money UA-cam provides us from their random ads, that are infinitely more profitable for UA-cam. We also are not monetizing GameNight videos so there should no longer be the random breaks UA-cam inserts. Plus Gamegenic makes some amazing products. I hope you understand our situation. Thanks for the note and for watching.-Lincoln
It's really not that bad. They are easy to skip through if your not interested, but I love game night and of this helps fund them and keep them producing this great content I'm all for it. It is far better than other ways of doing it and it really doesn't effect much at all.
So much fun! And so great to see Candice back at the Game Night table!
Mike's second time as Cap Ten was simply phenomenal!

That said, it's great seeing the game on stream, since it does not have an English version yet and is basically unknown over the pond. Thanks for that
I think my family would love this one, thanks!
And taking a bottle of wine to a friend's house is totally a 1 or 2, not a 7! Hehe
Mike really was amazing as capten!

I was just amazed at Dave's guesses in the practice round. Great job!

I play a good amount of Jackbox where you need to read & know the players (metagaming). Some luck, some skill.
Mike's second round was amazing 😊👍🏾👍🏾someone else commented that this game reminded them of "The Mind" and I totally get it, how fun!

The rankings feel backwards to me. Least useful (etc) ought to be 10, I feel. Every top ten list saves the favorite for the #1 spot

I'm ok with the ads, it makes sense. But the volume though, it is too loud.
