What about these inverter generators with the ignition module just bolted to the outside of the motor with a positive and negative wire coming from the kill switch?
will this work on a. v twin Kohler courage that has an intermittent misfire/dead miss?
what if the coil is ok but the wire that holds the coil is loose?
Your channel is hands down, the best on YT for teaching, advising and methodical problem solving. Thanks Steve.
Don't forget there are still a lot of older engines out there with points that should be checked before replacing the coil.
Thats right, good good
And, across those points is a capacitor (Condenser), which also can fail, either shorted - which will mean no spark, or open/dramatically changed in value, which can lead to very weak spark.
What is the "points"
That's a good point.
Your point?
Simple episodes like this are more "reinforcement" as to why I am a very proud subscriber!
I feel exactly the same and for the same reason I'm also a proud supporter TK.
Great tip about how to isolate a coil. Something I did not know. Thanks again April and Steve, you both are a delight. And the way you present your information makes me feel a bit like I'm standing on the other side of your counter and you are talking to me personally. I am sure other regular viewers feel the same. Always, Thumbs Up!
I have learned more about small engines from your channel than anywhere else. I guess I have been fortunate in that in my 58 years, other than having to rebuild one carburetor on an old push mower and replacing the deteriorated fuel lines on my chainsaw, I have never had any troubles with my small engines. Other parts of the machines have worn out while the engines were still going. Proper and timely maintenance go a looong way toward ensuring trouble free performance.
In the early 2000's, a friend of mine raced Pocketbike competition, in the so-called Proto class.
I helped him with the technique (former car mechanic) before and during the races.
In the Proto class we were allowed unlimited tuning, only the cylinder capacity was not allowed to exceed 50cc. In terms of ignition, we gained a lot of experience back then, and also learned from the mistakes of other riders. We had noticed that the gap between the magneto coil and flywheel was very important. We and others always thought that this gap should be as small as possible, until one day we adjusted this gap with the thinnest paper we could find. The engine sounded more powerful (and also reacted more strongly to the throttle), but the maximum rpm was suddenly more than 2000 rpm lower (normally we had around 15000 rpm, and then suddenly only around 13000 rpm). What we then noticed was that the magneto coil and flywheel were burning hot, and that the plastic of the magneto coil started to smell. Afterwards we adjusted the gap back as before, but we still didn't get back to 15000 rpm, and at high revs the engine started to stutter. After a long search, we replaced the magneto coil, which took away the stuttering, but we still didn't get back to 15000 rpm. When we eventually also replaced the flywheel, we reached 17000 rpm. When we did tests afterwards with the old flywheel and the new one, it turned out that the magnet of the old one had lost strength due to the extreme heat.
Afterwards we learned that the extreme heat development has to do with so-called "Eddy current" which magnets can develop, and that a too small magneto coil gap acts as a brake, and that after a certain time, this causes permanent damage to the magneto coil and flywheel. Afterwards we simply folded print paper double as a gauge and we have not encountered that problem again. The gap also determines the ignition timing to a small extent. With a smaller gap, the spark comes earlier.
I was just wondering about whether or not leaning towards a smaller or larger gap made a difference. TY 4 sharing
Another thing to try in regards to ignition module diagnosis is corrosion where it is mounted to the block and not getting a correct grounding to the laminations,it is rare but does happen, had a few in the early 2000s on the Stihl MS 660, Thanks again April and Steve, well done
Good one. Straight up simple.
Perfect timing discovered no spark yesterday 12.5 Kohler add the Saloon method 2 day with Steve’s guidance ! Lucky Me ! 😊
Thank you Steve and April...stay safe 🙂
Thanks guys! Did not know about that. This is why Steve is the man!👏👏
Great advice Steve. That will save money for your viewers. Thanks.
Right on Steve that's how I do it the only other thing you do suggest it's just double-check the gap between the flywheel make sure nothing's come loose or the Gap hasn't changed as long as you're good that's exactly what I
Thanks, Steve and April! You two are awesome 👌
Thanks Steve, learned something new today!!!
Thanks Steve, now that was pretty informative, I did not know that you could do that. What a great tip
Really enjoying your 30 days of questions, Steve! You have a great channel, thanks for sharing your expertise with us. 👍👍
Exactly , so easy 👍 liking the 30 day deal. 👏🇨🇦Also check with a know good plug and that the wire end wasn’t pulled off plug inside the boot
Love these videos. Rock on, Stevie!
Keep him on track, April.
Yes Steve, I missed the other days prior. Working a Cud Cadet XT1 with a no spark condition. I cleaned all the rust off them both to include the grounding points. Set the air gap and still nothing. I've not pulled the ground of yet to verify. I also checked the key way just to make sure it didn't jump time and not spark when it's supposed to.
Sheer Brilliance, that is such a fantastic simple and easy tip to do, thanks so much Steve and April 👍👌👏
Thanks for a great teaching.
Thank you very much for the information.
Good simple advice!!
You are a great partnership and your videos always rock🙏
Steve and April our small engine saviors!
Loving this series
Great advice didn't know you could test that way
Great info, and I look forward to the full video on this subject! Cheers to you both!
Good advice again Steve 👍
Thank You’ll for information and advice
Happy you’ll take time to train us All 😊
Didn't know this Steve. Thank you for the share!
Great Videos, keep them coming. I learn a lot every time I watch one of these! This time I was struggling with a older 14hp Kawasaki motor FC420V/AS10 on a John Deere LK172 that did not have a spark. When I first tried testing it with this method I pulled the wire directly off the coil and still didn't get a spark and thought the coil was bad because this ignition circuit has an Ignitor Module in it which still has to stay connected (I disconnected when pulling the wire off the coil). I saw another video specific to my motor that showed disconnecting the kill wire before the ignitor so the ignitor module was still connected to the coil. The actual problem was the ignitor module, which was screwed to a shroud rather than directly to the motor. Problem was resolved when I jumpered case ground to the ignition module mounting screw.
Loved the question today, definitely can save money with your explanation SteveO! Cheers 🍻 Steve and April Out
Thanks April/Steve. Great information. I was thinking like Mato P commented. I guess my equipment is dated. (points are fouled).
As a guy I knew used to say, in an automotive context: "There are mechanics, and there are parts replacers."
Which one are you !
@@TripGibson Pretty much the latter, I'm afraid. But I continue to strive.
Awesome tip! and you've saved some folks some money for sure!
If you don't mind me interjecting, you touched on it on last video about the air gap. If a mounting screw vibrates loose you could lose the gap and not work too. Thanks for taking the time to share.
Thanks
Thank you again!
Another great bit of information.
So easy. Thanks, Steve.
No worries!
Steve, rust on that coil where the 2 points pass the flywheel sometimes get rusty enough that the intensity of the spark is reduced. I have seen this several times. Take off the ignition module and sand those 2 points and for me it has worked..... sometimes
great tip .....thumbs up !!
I was getting ready to buy a new coil,disconnected the wire,started on first pull,thank you,thank you👍
Glad I could help
I always check the gap on the ignition module. I had a small 2 cycle engine that had spark and would start and run but it was very hard to get started and would die and acted like it ran out of fuel. I re gapped the module closer and it starts on the first pull and runs like new.
@@holleyman1970 business cards are free and everywhere
If it's an old engine with points under the flywheel, then those need to be cleaned!
Points and condensers should be cleaned using file 13..🤣
@@vapinbachelor289 That depends. my old Stihl 028AV has points and condenser, but I wouldn't think of upgrading to electronic ignition. It would spoil the original state of a collectible engine. For most folks, yes, upgrade to electronic: hotter spark and faster starts guaranteed.
Steve, I replaced the cylinder/Piston on my MS 311 due to running it lean caused by leaky crank seals. I replaced the coil with a brand new Stihl part as well, and now have a NO SPARK condition! I tried disconnecting the ground wire as you outlined in your video... still no spark. I traced the yellow wire back looking for a short, and it all looks good. I am at a loss...
Spark tester shows spark yet to weak to fire engine. Any multi meter readings to confirm weak module ? Thanks for the Vids ! I learn a lot . Nice to see April in this series .
Thank you for posting your video. I followed your instructions and found let I did not need a Ignition module.
Glad it helped
Answering 30 questions in one day is insane! I’m sure you both took a long nap after this marathon😂
Wow did nit know that. Thanks Steve
Steve also check plug cap ! had faulty ones of them too when I thought module was faulty
Q: Steve, should I change my module?
A: Have you sanded the rust off the flywheel?
Came here just to find that comment!!
Woah pump your breaks bud. You answered this yesterday. You said you highly
Recommended polishing your flywheel. You dementia is setting in deep. /s
@Farmer Wayne 🤣😂🤣😂🤣
I sanded, nothing happened
Learned this one from mower medic1. Corrosion on the coil where it is spaced from the flywheel could be a problem. He recommended sanding that area if corrosion is present.
Nice one Steve and April, think you’ve just solved the problem I have. Thanks 🇬🇧
Glad to help
Don’t forget to check the coil mounting posts for corrosion. Clean them up, reset coil gap and recheck for spark. I have had this a couple of times.
Same here. After cleaning the mounting surfaces and setting the gap with a business card, I was cautious to not over tighten the mounting screws into the aluminum housing for fear of stripping out, but I was under tightened. When the flywheel passed under the magnets, the gap closed and I had no spark.
Again I saved the day. Ty
Thsnks brother !!!!!! 👍👍👍👍👍
Hello Steve, I just watched this episode. so, the issue I'm having is with Americas Sweetheart John Deere... he has a Japanese Heart. that won't start. (No Spark)
Back Story: my sone gave me a JD RX-73 riding mower. It ran briefly and they would not start. so, he and a "Mower Mechanic" worked on it and it won't start. I am not a dummy to small engines. and I taught my son well. He ended up giving me the mower after replacing the coil & Plug. thinking surely, he over looked something I tore into it. This is a Kawasaki 9 hp motor (Model FC290V). Two things strike me as odd about it. first it has an Igniter....I've not seen that or had issue with on ever. so, I replaced it. My Son replaced the coil, so I Olhmed it out seemed ok but I replaced it anyway because I have noticed an up tik in new parts being bad from the git-go.(Oh BTW, amazon takes back coils) still no spark. the Flywheel is rusty... LOL because it's cast iron. and that happens I know. HOWEVER, the flywheel has a replaceable magnet. (Huh wth why is that?) I did the screwdriver test on the magnet and compared to other mowers, Pressure washer motors and seems fine. still no spark. What I did find odd was on this coil, there was no real adjustment for gap. so, I measured it at .015. still won't spark
In closing two coils, a new igniter, two spark plugs, and with the ground terminal disconnected still no spark. it defies mechanical common sense. replacing the motor is too expensive, when I can pick up another used riding mower for $500 running or not.
What say You?
Steve can you check the resistance of your coil with a multimeter?
That may tell you if it's definitely bad but not necessarily definitely good 😁
Love the videos & content! Question: What if the wire from the coil to the spark plug has an open circuit? There would still be no spark with a good coil. I would check the continuity between the spark plug and the coil/ignition module as a primary test.
I have an old Stihl 015 that had this issue and had to reconnect the wire from the module to the spring that connects to the spark plug. Problem solved.
Greetings,
Ordered my coil today...less than $20 on Amazon. Yes, hope it works. BTW, had a metal rivet get stuck to the magnets. May have caused damage.
Thanks
Chief Ken Bauer, USAF (Ret)
It worked for me thank you 🙏
You're welcome!
thanks Professor Steve !!
My pleasure!
Love ladies getting involved in their husbands work, keep it up April!
Unless it's an old engine with points. Keep up the good work.
thank you for info... any show on testing ignition igniter.?
Another good job with this video guys. Big fan here.
Got my gen running, thanks.
Great to hear!
Awesome video God Bless you and your family
Thank You...
Good advice...Or use your Multimeter to check resistance and continuity.
Agreed. Steve presented a method that is quick and simple and works. I don't necessarily just look for a just replace this part so I'm with you on the multimeter. Something to add is that the coil and wire and spark plug boot CAN be replaced as individual parts. The multimeter will help you get down to the specific fault. Many people look at how many settings are on the meter and hear words regarding electrical theory and get intimidated. Truth is using the right tools will save you money.
@@cedrichollowell856 True comment.. Keep your options open. Thanks for sharing.
With the old-school ignition coils, the ones tied to points and condenser (I'm working on one right now, on my old Stihl 028AV chainsaw) the primary and secondary coils within the coil CAN be checked with a multimeter. Today's solid state ignition modules cannot be so easily checked because of the electronic components inside. Just follow Steve's advice: disconnect the grounding conductor and spin the engine. You'll either see a nice hot spark or you won't.
i was having trouble starting my stihl MS181 and decided to check the plug and coil, no spark at plug but coil tested ok. When i pulled the plug lead out of the retaining clip i found that the green kill wire and the black one were both stripped as if the plastic cover had been stripped back wit a knife rather than worn looked rather odd as i had owned my saw since about 2016 i had not lent it to anyone nor had it been back in for repair , anyway i separated the wires and taped up the bare ones and replaced them in the clip except for the plug lead which i put beside the clip. i replaced everything and it started the first time. and since it has started better than since new. i dont know how the wires became bare but i imagine what was happening was that with the wires being bare they interfering with each other and the plug lead. I have now ordered a new wiring harness, we'll see
I've replaced the ignition coil the main thing is to put it on the correct way otherwise it will make it Miss fire the other thing is the spark plug might be cracked
Also possible that bad connection in sparkplug boot. Should test resistance with multimeter.
Great hot tip questions
Thank You...
Be a good idea to do a more in depth on this one ./Multi meter etc
I'm working on an older Husqvarna weed eater in which nearly all the insulation covering the wires that go to the start/stop switch has fell off. No spark. I'm hoping that replacing these wires will cure the problem. You have to remove a bunch of screws & separate the motor from the shaft to even see the coil.
That would be a magic bit of advice for me if I was desperate. I have a great way of finding out what the problem is. I take whatever machine it is to my favourite small engine repair shop. It's really weird. They fix things!
Hilarious, I have never heard that one before
Good to know! Thanks, Steve. Now to remember it. My mind is a steel trap... with a broken spring. 🤣 But typing that should help me to remember it now. 👍
Tried that myself.... Doesn't always work lol
thank you this video helped me!
You're welcome!
Ya gotta make sure the iron bars have a good ground to the block, i.e., the mounting screws. If it's corroded under the coil and not making good contact with the block you will also get a no spark or very week spark issue.
Thanks for this.
Genius thank you very much for this video
You're welcome!
I had a coil I thought was bad but it turned out to be a bad connector to the spark plug. Some of the new motors have some porcelain in the metal connector that goes open
Use a ohm meter to check primary and secondary i bought a brand new coil last year primary open your right good quick test for sure have you friend hold the plug and pull it over if she doesn't jump 2 feet it's bad if her hair stands up it's good
Great as always like to watch Steve great guy
Be aware , sometimes they only fail when they are hot , but run ok when cool.
Yes. Intermittent problems are the real head wreckers .
That's what I fear I have going on. After using my Shindy eb910rt for a while, it starts to bog down. RPM might go up for a bit and then back down. I wait until it's cool, and then it's good again. Someone else suggested fuel tank vent but if my son unscrews the fuel cap a little bit while I'm running it, there's no change. Could be fuel filter, I guess.
Steve! I have a jonsered 920 it’s unbelievable hard to pull. Would like to see a video how to put a decompression valve on it.
Learn something new everyday!
How do you check ohms on a coil?
Hey Steve, can you show how to replace the intake boot on a Stihl 017? Thank you
Could incorrect air gap be a problem? Check resistance on primary/secondary windings.
I said it a few years ago and I will say it again, Steve you rock
Thank You...
Anyway to test a coil that functions but is on its way out, ie weaker spark, intermittant spark fail etc? Basic spark test the best method? I suspect my oem Kohler twin coils are headed in that direction, I did notice with two identical test lights hooked up that one side showed a much stronger spark than the other when running with both cylinders hooked up to test lights
Thank you for the video I have a F525 and I can't get no spark at all I try to unplug the ground wire like you said I still have no spark it is a John Deere part and like you say they are expensive and I'm going to try another coil okay thank you for the video and if you give me any other ideas like what is underneath the flywheel that looks like a ninja star what is that somebody told me that was bad thank you
I had the same problem. No spark. Good coil and spark plug. It turned out that the coil was not 10 thousands of an inch from the flywheel magnet. Easy fix!
The first thing I'd do is clean the rust off the flywheel...😁...lol.
Just watch day 23 on coils,I had a few where the mounts were corroded, and it had no spark
That's me throwing parts at my weed Wacker. Great stuff Steve. Will try this one.
