“Brooklyn broke” is an expression/slang for a person who is rich but dresses like a “poor person” because it’s cool (think: the Brooklyn hipster asthetic). To be “Brooklyn broke” is to be a rich person dressing like a “normal person” (beanies, jeans, flannel, etc). Jake Gyllenhaal has been, in the past, known for that aesthetic in his lifestyle (and he lived/lives in Brooklyn).

The crumpled up piece of paper line is one of my favorites. When you write on paper and get frustrated and crumple it up and throw it on the ground, what you wrote is still there and that paper will “remember” it even though you tossed it aside. If you pick the paper back up and uncrumple it and try to smooth it out, it will never be completely flat again. It will have creases and dents no matter how hard you try to fix it. Such a perfect analogy for a relationship or person. What you do or say to someone will stay with them and becomes a part of who they are. They will never fully be as they were before you even after trying for years to “smooth” themselves out. It just becomes part of their story.

The thing I love most about Taylor is how beautiful of a picture she paints. It’s literally like a movie. You can literally see it happening as she sings. And how swifties can see that in her is the best thing ever. Bc she’s a songwriter. Yes she can sing, but she writes these songs like they’re stories. It’s magic.

"I'll forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" feels so devastating to me personally. Whenever I would spend a long enough time apart from a toxic person, memories of good times would cause me to romanticize our time together. I would bring them back into my life, only to be hurt all over again, and the cycle repeats...

Hi Violet, it is frustrating that the comments and the subsequent comments to the comments are not easily linked together. Perhaps it was another comment that I made which caused confusion. I knew about Taylor’s 21st Birthday, in which she was horribly let down by that man, who doesn’t even deserve for us to call by name.
I commented on the reference you made to “22” and how I never associated them before.
This is one of the reasons why I am so grateful for the Swiftie community. I’m still a new Swiftie. I began to fall in love with all things Taylor, on Jan 1, 2022. I’ve been alternating between deep dives and becoming more fluent in Taylor’s catalog since then. I love it when Swifties bring up points like you did with “22”.
Thank you for getting back to me.
Gosh, I must have listened to the both versions of “All too well”, and the short movie at least a hundred times, and still, at the first freaking chords, my eyes always well up. Taylor is a phenomena that I do not believe the world has EVER seen before and I dare say, won’t ever again!
PS i love ur name. are you a pisces? cool folk. i’m obviously also a water sign. I personally think that pisces are more intuitive and we are both feisty as well. 😁

Anyway, to this day I am still finding easter eggs in Taylor's music videos. In fact, I just connect the dots with "Look What You Made Me Do" MV, her in the cage singing you locked me out and threw a feast, anyway someone mentioned Karlie Kloss. I then remembered that Taylor once let Karlie stay at her house and Karlie had a party there while Taylor was gone. Tailor lifting those motorcycles in that same MV was Taylor's way of saying she is the reason Big Machine is where they are. But in the end of course, he sold Big Machine, Scott knew she was his bread and butter. Anyway, I am always glad to help out, even though I have been a fan since the beginning, I am still learning new things. I have always had strong intuitions, and that has always helped me throughout life.

She had another song on Red (“Begin Again”)about dating someone after Jake Gyllenhaal where she says “i think it’s strange you think I’m funny because he never did”. It’s a great song but it’s sad that a 21/22 yr old felt that way.

I didn't go back and read all the comments so I may be repeating what someone else already said. When the Red album was first released Swifties fell deeply in love with the original version of All Too Well. Taylor was surprised at how quickly it became a favorite and how strongly people resonated with the lyrics. At one point Taylor mentioned the original version was 10 minutes long but she had to cut it down to a reasonable length. For years upon years upon years Swifties have talked about and asked about and begged to hear the 10 minute version. When Taylor re-recorded Red not only did she bless us with the 10 minute version but we got an amazing short film out of it too. All Too Well was my favorite song on Red years and years ago and it still remains one of my top 10 Taylor Songs. Thank you for another intelligent reaction. And as usual I love how you pay attention to the lyrics. Have the loveliest of days!

Also, very interesting possible interpretation of “lovers stay my age” as being stunted because of trauma. I think lots of us interpret “I get older but your lovers stay my age” as a callback to earlier in the song when “you said if we had been closer in age, it would have been fine, and that made me want to die.” So Gyllenhaal’s excuse for breaking up with Taylor was that they were too far apart in age but he proceeded to date multiple women younger or the same age as Taylor. As of 2024, he is dating Jeanne Cardieu who is 28 (he is 43). When they started dating, she was 22 (just 1 year older than Taylor was when SHE dated Jake FOURTEEN YEARS AGO). So…it’s not a *great* look for him.

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 2 місяці тому +1

Yeah... But it's also BS cause he dated women than himself before he dated Taylor and he dated women older than he was after Taylor too.
And he only started dating again officially like a year and a bit after Red came out... So technically Taylor couldn't have known who and how old his next girlfriend was going to be.
It's a great line... And it has some truth for sure... But toxic Swifties treat it and far too many other lines in songs they are gospel... And to be fair to Gyllenhaal... He's been with Jeanne for 6 years now. He seems to be fairly serious about it 🤷‍♀️
It's frustrating because Taylor keeps telling her fans that songs like these are written in the heat of the moment, and that often extreme lyrics are how she felt right then... But they may not be fair or accurate because they are only her peraeption of a two-sided moment or relationship.
It is an incredible snapshot of an extreme feeling during that time though and it was absolutely valid for her to feel that way.

@karinrommel5925 agreed. I think it also speaks to how, especially when you are young, it's easy to convince yourself (or be gaslit into thinking) that the problems were "not that bad" or even your fault. That it could work if some change is made. The positives can hold so much weight that we forget just how bad the negatives were until we are back in that situation again and remember how low they made us feel.

She wrote several songs that are most likely about Jake. For the petty Taylor (who is awesome) song, listen to the live version of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" from the 1989 Tour and then the music video. Jake hates pop music, so she literally set out to make a pop tune that would get stuck in people's heads and get played everywhere.... so he couldn't escape it. "The Moment I Knew" is about her 21st birthday and Jake not showing up.

Saeed doesn't know the rest of the songs about Jake on Red where she describes how on again, off again they were. And the lyrics of this song only indicate that they broke up and got back together-ish once... And not even for how long that might have happened.

The chords in this song are very repetitive until the final verse “and i was never good at telling jokes..” where she flips from C-G-Am-F to C-Am-F-G. For me the repetition is to explain that she was not imagining things despite the gaslighting; the chord change represents the change in her view of things. She now understands that he was making fun of her for not being funny (i was never good at telling jokes) but in fact she sees what is really funny which is him being with younger people even though he claimed that the reason for their breakup was the age difference. She sees herself broken after a relationship that felt like a war. She thought Jake was her soulmate (maybe they even talked about it; “sacred prayer i was there”) and she asks whether the twin flame (the relationship with a soulmate) paints him blue (sad) and if he was as hurt as her afterwards.
This song is so honestly vulnerable and relatable for many people.

Taylor has written several songs about this relationship (most of the Red album). It's very interesting how the songs connect to each other. It'd be cool if you listened to them!
To complement All Too Well, aside from the obvious (short film), I'd reccomend listening to "The Moment I Knew", it'll be very enlightening regarding the "it's supposed to be fun, turning 21" line. I think you'd really enjoy the album too!
Songs that are most likely about her relationship with Jake:
    1- State of Grace
    2- Red
3- I Knew You Were Trouble*
    4- Treacherous*
    5- All Too Well
    7- I Almost Do
8- We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together
    10- The Last Time
12- Sad Beautiful Tragic (not sure about this one actually)
    17- The moment I knew (!!!!!)
    18- Come back... Be here*
*these are also believed to be about Harry Styles (as you can imagine, there's no consensus).
Also, I only listed the Original Deluxe album, but there are also Vault tracks. I would highlight three you should listen in this context: Better Man, Babe and I Bet You Think About Me (the last one is SO Jake really, you'll understand it better after the short film).
Fun fact: Red TV is the only rerecording that got two music videos (I Bet You Think About Me and All Too Well Short Film). The fans always joke about Red being her favorite child.

Great reaction Saeed, thank you 😊 I don't think you over a analysed at all. The lyrics definitely danced around that imagery and she was definitely ambiguous about whether it was about her own virginity or not for 10 years (it wasn't in the end) ... So you weren't imagining things 😂
I think you got emotional because that is around the time in the song that she is coming to the final stages of her grief.
Around that time in the song when she wonders if she will ever be her old self again connects so intuitively to be with any kind of depression or grief from any kind of time period of mental struggles.
I think that line "I'd like to be my old self again, but I'm still trying to find it" is probably my personal favourite from the song.
I connect to it personally on so much more than just the level of a break up. It really speaks to me and she emotes it so well with her vocal and the instrumentals and the production on that segment too.
It really just is a masterpiece of a song 😉

14:04 “then you call me up again just to break me like a promise. So casually cruel in the name of being honest.” This hits me HARD. Once had a longtime boyfriend call me up a year after we broke up (on good terms) just to tell me he had cheated on me when we dated, and that’s really why he’d wanted to break up. He just wanted to get it off his conscience and “be honest.” I was like “….. thanks for that totally unnecessary slap in the face. I’m gonna go spiral now, thanks for the honesty!” 😭

The scarf was real, but it was navy blue, gray and red. They were photographed walking together with Taylor wearing it, after it was over Jake was photographed wearing it. Since Taylor's album was called Red, the scarf became red. Taylor dated John Mayer before Jake, the songs from that awful relationship sound like he was her first. But Jake emotionally broke her.

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 2 місяці тому +9

Yeah... I'm not sure that's fair... Jake emotionally broke her THEN... John Mayer left her with so much PTSD that she wrote songs about the trauma on Midnights AND TTPD 😭😭😭
I heard that she always said that Jake wasn't a bad person. He was just a terrible boyfriend. Mayer traumatised her. And he's done it to many other exes (Jessica Simpson, Jennifer Aniston, Jennifer Love Hewitt, etc.).

@@Cmyers16 Taylor dated John Mayer before Jake. I doubt if John and Taylor were only playing cards and writing songs all during that relationship. I think that some fan made up the scenario that the scarf was not a scarf and other fans just ran with it. Being the person that John Mayer was/is, it seems unlikely that their relationship was platonic especially since he was 32 and she was 19 years old.

@@vidsorama2 I think the lines in Dear John, “I took the matches before fire could catch me,” is about that she’s left the relationship before they fully had sex.

      @vidsorama2 2 місяці тому +2

@@susansather7763 Opinions vary. Only the two of them know for sure. With John's personality and record of relationships, a platonic dating relationship with a much younger woman seems unlikely. I thought that the the line about fire not catching her meant that he did not get the chance to destroy her mentally and emotionally the way that he had done with other young women who dated him. It appears that her "WCS" hindsight trauma surfaced after she wrote "Dear John". I'm just glad that she got out of both toxic relationships with a willingness to still be open to love.

The 21st birthday is one of the most important ones in the U.S. because it’s when you can legally drink. Years 16, 18, and 21 are big ones. That age is especially significant in this song because he ruined such a right of passage for her. Her dad watched her missing out on experiencing what should have been one of the most fun nights of her life and when he said it’s supposed to be fun turning 21, I feel like he’s both pointing out how unhealthy the relationship is and how she should be out there enjoying that carefree time between childhood and full adulthood. But instead she’s being held back from living in the present because she’s stuck trying to be the person an older man wants. But he didn’t even have the decency to show up to an extremely important celebration of her life after promising he would. Missing any birthday party would’ve been bad, but it being the 21st adds a lot of context to how deeply it hurt her. And her dad. I can’t imagine watching my kid go through that situation and just wanting them to be young and happy for as long as possible. She also dated John Mayer when she was 19 and he was 32, so this isn’t the first time they would’ve watched a man almost as close to their age as their daughter’s steal her youth and happiness from her.
I’m not sure what the scarf metaphor is about, but I don’t think it’s virginity. Or at least not in the traditional sense. There’s a line in “The Manuscript” (about John Mayer) from TTPD that implies that they probably had a physical relationship. I dislike the entire idea of virginity and I feel like Taylor probably does too. I think the scarf is more about emotional connection. Maybe a level of emotional connection that made the physical one the most significant for her up to that point? Who knows. But the rest of the song feels so deep and poetic that it seems reductive (maybe even crass?) for it to simply refer to an outdated construct like virginity. I know she wrote it a long time ago, but even in 2010 I feel like that would be a little out of character for her.

Anyways on the part about Jake missing her 21st b day party ....after that there's a lyric video called "the moment I knew" which is a continuation of that event and will give more context to what happened. It's also an amazing song with lots of tea. U may wanna react to that next if ur not going to do the short film but th short film will put that all into perspective to where it will make more sense. It also has a scene that I won't spoil and actress Sadie sink and actor Dylan Obrein as Jake. "I forget about you long enough to forget why I needed to" to me means that she has accepted the loss of the relationship, she has gone through the grieving process and started to move on with her life, and that's when he comes back and wants to rekindle it. She has gotten some distance from the pain, but he shows up and re-opens the wounds and reminds her of how much pain he caused.
It reminds me of a line in the song "Renegade" by Big Red Machine that she features on. The song is about trying to love someone who is not in a place mentally/emotionally where they can be a good partner in a relationship. The line is: "You fire off missils 'cause you hate yourself, but do you know you're demolishing me? And then you squeeze my hand as I'm about to leave". I can say that it is a shitty and selfish thing to do, to not let a person - that you can't love - to move on, but I have done that myself and can't really throw stones. Well, maybe I can just admit to being a shitty and selfish person sometimes.

From the Genius website for the phrase Brooklyn broke my skin and bones and her being a soldier returning half her weight:
“While this line could be geographically alluding, it could also be referring to his ways of making her insecure and speaking down on her (especially through their age gap). Throughout the entirety of the Red album(s), she has made it clear that he made her insecure in the relationship. There’s a popular saying “sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” It’s clear he put her through some sort of verbal abuse, so Taylor’s saying his words did in fact hurt her. He broke her spirit and appearance down.
This is not the only time she’s used the phrase “skin and bones” in this album, either. In Treacherous, she sings
All we are is skin and bones
    Trained to get along
While before the two of them seemed to be connected through this “treacherous” relationship, in the end it was her who was the broken one.
Taylor has also spoken out about her unhealthy relationship with food which began around this time and another way to describe someone who is very slim is that they are skin and bone. She could be further hinting at the breakdown of the relationship pushing her further towards those unhelpful habits.”

She talks about leaving her innocence behind and someone not “calling it what it was” which is why this short relationship had such a harsh impact on her. She also talked in the end about “holding my lifeless frame” and I think that’s a glimpse into how she felt used and empty in the end. She thought he loved her and saw a future with her so she gave away something she couldn’t get back and it’s haunting her.

No, The Manuscript is about John Mayer. Many contextual clues back up this argument and there are none to back up the song being about Jake.
One if John Mayer's biggest hit songs is Slow Dancing In A Burning Room. In The Manuscript, she literally has a line, "and the slow dance, was alive with the spark"... Which is also connected to "Sparks Fly" and the imagery from the bridge of Dear John (both songs about John Mayer).
She's also never said on any song that her relationship with Jake traumatised her. But she definitely said on 3 songs that her relationship with Mayer did.

@@emmavink I completely disagree! In the manuscript she’s talking about a man who is older then her, “in the age of him she wished she was 30 (the age Jake was when they dated)
      “Then the actors
Were hitting their marks” is a reference to her writing and filming All too well the short film.
      “And the slow dance
      Was alight with the sparks
      And the tears fell
In synchronicity with the score” is referring to the actors dancing in the kitchen in the refrigerator light. And the line and the tears fell.. is referring to the scene when Sadie is lying in bed crying and the tears feel in synchronicity with the music, with Taylor’s directions.
The song is about her doing the short film and the re-recordings and not a bit older and with more experience look at her work and earlier recordings with another person and
      “And at last
She knew what the agony had been for” she says “The only thing that's left is the manuscript” The only manuscript we know of is the manuscript for All too well short film. But at the end of the song she talks about her music. She’s saying that she’s finally realizing that even though she’s been through toxic and bad relationships, relationships that has hurt her, broke her. Yet, because of these relationships, her experiences she created music. Different eras full of music. Music about her stories. But that now the stories aren’t hers anymore.

@@josefinasoderholm6488 generally, that is what The Manuscript is about. Yes. But it is NOT about Jake Gyllenhaal.
She has not one ONE SONG ever expressed concern that she was "too young" or that her relationship with Gyllenhaal was ever inappropriate. Gyllenhaal was NOT 30 for the 2 months they were together. He was 29. Mayer was 32 when they were together.
Taylor wrote 3 entire songs where she says that Mayer love bombed, groomed and traumatised her (Dear John, Would've Could've Should've, and The Manuscript).
And she IS NOT sleeping in her mother's bed in the short story. She's sleeping in her own bed.
The actors are not specific to the short film at all. They are the actors in her life. Like the entire Manuscript is the script OF HER LIFE. Not of a music video at all.
Hint: she's directed far more than one music video.
Also, on Would've Could've Should've, she makes it VERY clear that what Mayer did to her has affected every relationship she ever had after him. Even with Gyllenhaal.
She's never once said she regrets having been with Gyllenhaal. The opposite is true. She made sure she'd remember him by releasing a 10 minute breakdown of what happened.
Versus Dear John, Would've Could've Should've, and The Manuscript where we hardly get any real physical imagery at all except for them comparing licences, and him trying to make her believe the huge age gap was ok.
The age gap between Mayer and Taylor was 13 years. The Manuscript is Track 31... 13 in reverse.
I don't have to shoe norm her lyrics to make one disjointed argument work. You can't ignore the amount of context clues you are ignoring.

@@emmavink So it’s about All too well, but not about Jake Gyllenhaal? 😊
But it’s ok, you can choose to believe that it’s about John Mayer. But you won’t convince me of that. (Or the many many people who like me think it’s about Jake Gyllenhaal and All too well.) And why would Taylor make another song about John saying that it wasn’t right of him to start a relationship with her when it was this big age-gap when she’s already have Dear-John and would’ve could’ve should’ve? And if Sayed listens to it he will get to make his own mind up

    • @emmavink
      @emmavink 2 місяці тому

@@josefinasoderholm6488 no. It's not about All Too Well in any way. I very clearly said so. There is no SPECIFIC reference to All Too Well alone that can't be equally applied to any of her other work and work just as well in the context of the lyrics.
You can try to dodge the Slow Dancing In A Burning Room reference all you want to. She mirrors that title virtually directly on The Manuscript. She literally also references Sparks Fly and Dear John lyrics.
They don't even do a slow dance in the refrigerator light on the All Too Well short film 🥴

@@SaeedReacts. I would suggest reacting to Dear John and Would've Could've Should've in the same video.
It's a continuation of the same story about 13 years apart. Very powerful, but the way they speak to each other over the years makes for a holistic experience of that incident in her life.

Brooklyn broke is used to describe someone who has a lot of $ but, dress like they don't. Ya know...vintage Levi's & T's, a toboggan or baseball cap, etc. Very much Jake's style back then. I think Jake also lived in Brooklyn so, has a double meaning in this song if so.😊
