It seems there's some mistakes in the first map because the holy roman empire encompassed northern italy in the late 10th century, France was still eastern francia until 987 and the duchy of brittany was independant
@@robert-surcouf There are a lot of issues in this video, of these the ones I caught were: - I believe Scania was part of Denmark at this point, if I recall we even found some of Harald's forts there. - Harald was not converted to Christianity by Otto II, as he had already converted by 965 at the latest, we know this due to the Large Jelling Stone. - Svend's (Sweyn) mother was likely not Gunhild, as she possibly didn't exist. She is only mentioned in the later medieval sources. From the runestones though, we know of a queen Tove, who was the daughter of an Oborite king, she is more likely to be Svend's mother. - The ring forts were likely not meant to subdue Danish nobles, recent research suggests they were made in preparation for Harald's second war with the HRE. - Danish vassalship to the HRE in the 10th century is similarily a hotly contested point. Most Danish historians believe this idea spawned with Adam of Bremen, who had political reasons to write such a history. - We have absolutely no real evidence of Hardeknud, Sigurd Worm-In-The-Eye or Ragnar Lothbrok ever existing, this lineage can be disregarded as nothing but myth. - Svend being renamed Otto is similarily an invention of Adam of Bremen, HistoryMarche seems to fall into a common paradox here, where they recognize the 965 baptism date, but also believe Otto II converted Harald, both of these cannot be true, but one is supported by the runestones, the other is not. - We have no evidence of churches built in this time to my knowledge. They are likely referring to the trinity church which Adam claims Harald built, in an effort to build him up as a saintly king. - Adam of Bremen's writings are extremely notorious for being outright propaganda for the Bishophric of Hamborg-Bremen. - Harald already controlled Norway by 965, as the Large Jelling Stone tells us - It is unclear if the first war resulted in the loss of Hedeby, sources do claim a fort was built in the area. - I have no idea where they are getting the sources for Svend's pre-king raids from. I'd like to read them. - We have absolutely no evidence that the Joms Vikings ever existed. - The account that Harald disowned Svend is likely false. Svend likely ended up rebelling, less out of a personal grievance and more out of pressure from the nobility, who were tired of his wars with Germany and wanted to focus on raiding. - The video implies that Harald controlled Dublin and several British Islands as part of his kingdom, I can't say for sure he didn't, but I don't think that is the case. They were certainly Norse holdings, but I don't think they swore allegiance to the Danish crown. - Harald didn't found Roskilde, this is another lie from Adam of Bremen, so he could claim that he built the trinity church there. We don't know where his body ended up. - The fight in Norway was undertaken by Harald, not the Joms Vikings, who as mentioned, likely never existed. All in all, it's an interesting video, with good production quality, but it uses very outdated research and trusts medieval second-hand sources way too much.

In 986 the coastal line to the north sea (now Schleswig-Holstein) looked completely different, same is true for the netherlands. There have been two major floods (1219 and 1362) that washed away nearly 1000 square kilometer of coast...
Great video thanks! Will you bring back more Crusades battles?
Smashed that subscribe button a long time ago, my dear Historymarche
So this is the era that Vinland saga takes inspiration from, amazing!
The fight around the 28 minute mark is the opening scene of s1 haha
Eric the Victorious and Sweyn would start a trend that would prove to be a constant back and forth for nearly 800 years 😂
Fascinating.
HAD to click. Once i researched Bluetooth - surprised learning the electronics named for a real man.
Athelred the Unready, what a name!
Your usual excellent work, thanks mister.
It was an informative and magnificent historical coverage episode shared by an excellent ( History Marche) channel....thanks for sharing
I'm Danish. Honestly, not a good video this one. Several things are wrong, and some intricate details to spice up the story that no one has ever known before, and would be impossible to know of today.
Which part of the video was wrong?
@@kristianjohansen5561 Dane here. He is right. First off southern Sweden was Danish. Actually Danish homeland along with sealand. Jutland was added later. Also The whole ragnar ancestory is just myths and shouldnt be used in this way. There are lot of made up things in this documentary. Its not terrible, just lacklustering and more entertainment than research.
@@TheBarser Geeze, it seems every pop-historian on youtube gets crap wrong. I'm tempted to give up youtube and just read books now.
@iqwrjwqioprwjriopqrjpqowir a good indication is the way its presented. I hate to say it, but its the classic American documentary style 😅.
For me history and documentaries should heavily rely on facts, but it seems lots of people prefer entertainment
@@TheBarser I'll keep that in mind. I'm tempted to learn German one of these days, so I can watch European documentaries and read German books. I skimmed a couple of French/German documentaries and it looked pretty good, so I'm tempted to take the plunge
Please do the battle of chaeronea 86bc. And a series about sulla
Living on the then highway between Jellinge and Aarhus (Aros) they recently dug up a Viking grave of the elite with horse and lots of treasurers, dated to last half of the 900s. I now better understand the society and struggle he must have faced about 1075 ago at the very spot I sit writing this. Just amazing.
Time to rewatch Vinland Saga once more
bluetooth and forkbeard, viking names go hard
Thanks for another excellent video
Please consider doing Montgisard and Navas de Tolosa. Thanks!
So excited for a Cnute series!
For the algo. 👍
I haven't seen the whole video yet, but an interesting fact about Sweyn is that Swansea in Wales is named after him.
in the end , the invetion of bluetooth was delayed for another 1008 years
Great! More Scandinavian history!
I'm wondering where from you get location of Jomsborg.
Most historicians are claiming that it was placed on the island of Wolin - modern days NW of Poland. Not on Dannish island as you pointed.
Palnatoke he mentioned in the video, was most llikely the man who founded Jomsborg in Wolin. But Palnatoke did indeed live in Fyn as he mentioned in the video as he was a folk hero from Fyn.
@@kristianjohansen5561 Palnatoki was rather appointed chief of Jomsborg. To found a city in this times, were needed huge resources and followers. Most likely the person which did it, was Bluetooth himself. :)
@@tomaszbojarski5165 According to available but scarce sources, it was Palnatoke who founded Jomsborg, or he was atleast a huge part of it
@@kristianjohansen5561souces and so opinions are divided at this point :)
But thanks for discussion :)
Have a nice day!
Very nice video, full of facts often left out.
However, the map of Sweden could be revised for a future video with some additional facts. For example adding Bleyking, Småland and the eastern Götaland all existing south of Sweden at the time.
Great video as always. Could you put your sources in the description like you normally do, I often enjoy reading them. Perhaps you forgot to include them this time.
A lot of reaearchers have suggested that Forkbeard is most likely a mistranslation. His name can also mean “Double edged”. That he got his name from using a double edged axe would make more sense.
Or that he was two-faced because he was nominally Christian but continued the Pagan lifestyle?
@@Tom_Quixote no, there's no translation of Tvienskegg that has any resemblance to two-faced.
For a long time, the vast majority of vikings converted to Christianity for practical reason only, while still holding on to their Norse religion.
@@Tom_Quixote ps, in case you haven't heard of it before:
Tveinskegg can be pronounced two ways.
Tvein - skegg = twin-beard.
tveinsk - egg = twin blade/edge.
For the algorithm! Great video guys!!
It's wild to consider that, as a species, we actually verge on the cusp of insanity. No other species on this planet goes out of its way to control, kill and obliterate its own kind.
Maybe ants but I like to think we are more than one step above ants.
I'm hoping the day comes where the rationale for warfare becomes obsolete.
Until then... great video once more HistoryMarche! More please! 😉
Great vid thanks 👍
being danish and nicknamed harald bluetooth in highschool i had to watch this, broke a front tooth as a kid and the temporary tooth i got did get this dark bluish color to it, hence the nickname..
i submit to the will of the great Norse gods and marvel at the saga I just witnessed. That is to say thumbs up on this one.
Bluetooth on your phone is actually named after Harald Bluetooth. The Bluetooth symbol is in old danish runes, it's a H and a B. Our current king, who's one of the only 178 frogmen in 30 years, is in direct bloodline with Ragnar, Gorm the old etc.
We're ruled by a frog...
More Viking history please 🔨⚡
You should make a video game you could contact creative assembly to help and just do historical battles with pre set army’s that are historically accurate
Amazing!
great video
wow amazing history!
Hi, this video is entertaining, but historical evidence is missing. Please provide citations from reliable sources.
Isefjord and Roskilde fjord, is where all my ancestors on my fathers side is from.
They're tough farmers and prone to fights, as soon as they spot someone from the neighboring villages 😅
Very interesting.
A sacrificial comment to the capricious algorithm and our esteemed host History Marche.
Olaf Tryggvason met a hermit on Isles of Scilly (Syllingar)was told sail to Norway and on arrival he would be King. It's also not known well but the vikings were the allies of the Cornish against the Anglo Saxon English. It's good to see that your map shows Cornwall not part of England.😅
Sound is too high-pitched and noisy, is there any problem with recording equipment?
Troll of Jom was at this battle
I like that you portray Scania as independent on the map, and shifted at that point in time. Small attention to detail. The East-Gothians may take some offense for being labelled Swedes, however.
