Try sanding the stick high enough above the lines, and then carefully clean all grit and filings away. then the fluid should stick in the scratches to tell you how far up ;the stick it goes. a lot of sticks have etching on them for that reason.
If it's hard to read, place a piece of white paper behind it then touch the paper to the dipstick, it will leave a mark on the paper where the oil level comes to.
Knipex cobra in actual use! There are so many reviews on brand new tools . It's good to get an opinion from someone who uses the tools!
I’ve never heard of that before, learn something every day on your channel 🙋🏻♂️
Cat looked like a barn owl, sitting on that post. And all that dipstick activity reminded me to top up my windscreen washer, so thanks for that! 😄
The dye was the best thing you could have done. Great tip for others!
I think so, we will see how long the color shows up, the deere people says its permanent,
Interesting vid - we'll see how that dye holds up - Adorable kitty - out little one that passed looks just like yours; she's jump up on the top of an open door and balance there for the longest time - first time I couldn't find her - some do love high places :) Thanks for sharing...
thanks, appreciate you watching,
as I came this morning she had another mouse on the front porch, mid evil torture
When servicing hydraulic industrial spray painting equipment, (we face the same issue due to the light viscosity of the hydraulic oil used), when we're on site, after initially drying off the dipstick and taking care inserting/removing the dipstick we simply rest the dipstick against one of our fingers. Wet spot = oil. Dry spot = no oil. 😎
Last minute it has a "true detective"'s vibe feeling...Love it
One way of seeing the level would be to make a wooden stick the same length as the dipstick and use that use for dipping the tank you would not be able to leave it in the tank as the fluid would attack the wood but something like that would be able to be stored easily and just used when you wanted to check the level.
Real fine sand paper. Some others discussed this too. Scuff it up a bit. Might help too. Use a UV light to find potential leaks or bad hoses. Dye stains evrything. Changing empliments is now gonna be real messy.
Nathan if you scuff the dipstick on one side it will help with reading it.
I've done this with chrome dipsticks and it helps. 😊
Gotta Love that Cat of yours....You weren’t kiddin when you said that Cat hangs out with you all day..😊
Knipex are fantastic pliers, been using them for years!!
Put baby powder on the dipstick when you dry it off. then check it. The oil will remove the baby powder from the level down and it won't hurt the system at all. Old navy trick when sounding fuel tanks.
Pull the dipstick, give it a good rub down with a clean rag and reinsert it, take it out and sprinkle a little floor dry on the stick and it only sticks to the oily part of the rod. Clean it off really well and reinsert it. Old greasemonkey trick.
Mama Cat makes for a great supervisor. She’s on the job!! 😂😂
I simply dust the bottom of the dip stick with talcum powder (only takes a tiny amount). This is an old oilfield trick gaugers have been using in applications where the condensate/oil tends to be crystal clear. Also works well when gauging water tanks.
As always, I enjoy the visits...
Great information
Nice hack. Thanks for sharing. I'm gonna do mine👍
I draw a line in Black Sharpie. It contrasts when covered with oil. I like the dye idea.
Well I learned something tonight. Would have never thought of that. I got your email on the Gatlinburg log.
Really hope you get your hands on it. I enjoy your videos. Thanks
I'll be driving through Tennessee today, just half way across the state from you
The Poor Man nice blow the horn when you get close 😁
@@nathanelliott9013 I'm over in Chattanooga I'm not sure you'd hear it
Thanks, sharing!
thanks for watching,
Wouldn't help with leaks, but you can also dust the dipstick with something to read it. Just have to wipe it clean really well before reinserting. I've used activated charcoal powder, but I don't know how many people have that lying around.
A file or a dremel grinder will give you a surface finish on the side of the dip stick that will make it easier to see the fluid . You don't have to go crazy with the grinder.
Thanks
Mama cat doing a red tail hawk impression.
Good luck with the dye. You might have made future repair work a messier job. But, Momma Cat is on her throne and seeing to all that she purveys. She rules! Nathan, you are just one of her subjects. Cats are like that. You don't own them, they own you!
5 year warranty on the machine, the mess will be on the service guys, 😀
Never tried the dye. I use a shot of carb cleaner on the dipstick and then a Sharpie. Lasts a good while. Works great.
Hardnox good idea 👍👍
Just touch the dip stick with paper from top to bottom, no problem reading off the paper. You should probably clean dipstick first than dip back in, and then use paper to touch from above max then slowly move down, waiting for paper to saturate. Only way to get accurate reading i think.
Thanks. You are right, it's really hard if not impossible to read the guage
agreed, this isnt the perfect fix but makes him 100 times better to read and the only solution other than painting the dip stick, if that would even work on that slick metal gauge,
thanks for watching,
All of my Kubotas have sight glasses for hydraulic/transmission fluid. Lucky me 👍
That was a good tip thanks for that I'll have to go get me some hydraulic die I run a Kubota 7800
never saw a pole cat that color before might be valueable,, nice walnut log hope ya get it,, thank you for the video
I see you have a pole cat
yes sir, she likes the high ground,
what about laying the dipstick on a piece for white paper towel. the fluid transfer should be move visible that way
In England we can buy red hydraulic oil, don’t know if you can over there ! 👍
I wonder if that is leak detector dye. If you have a black light shine it on the fluid and see if it fluoresces.
Take the shine off the dip stick and it will be easier to read. Please use a box wrench on that dip stick bolt- it will last a lot longer and not get chewed up!
I agree I wondering at the beginning why the paint on the bolt was so chewed up. Even better use a ring spanner or ratcheting ring spanner, leave it in the storage box, only use it for that job and you will never have to go looking for a shifter/vice grips/channel lock pliers again. It is a small price to pay as all of these multipurpose tools, even with care, eventually damage the bolt.
Just a thought ... I wonder if you can have the dipstick anodized.
Nice job 👍
thanks 👍
Nice work shop hack. Just one question.. would the dip stick get stained with the red after awhile? If so, it would always read full. Your thoughts?
👎. Thanks for watching
Good tip
James thanks buddy
Man, what an annoying little problem. Glad you found a fix.
Paint the stick between the lines & be done with it. That little bit of paint would never hurt anything. I would rather have that than have my warranty denied because I introduced a non-approved fluid.
Nathan, have You sent out an email with the subject title "A very special walnut log"???
Dated Today!
If you dip your stick with machinist blueing it with will make your oil easier to see also.
Keith Dunn thanks. Another good tip
What Would Be Wrong With Adding Two Bottles Of The Die Do You Think That Would Help . Just A Thought
Any time I change a filter that hangs down like that I fill it with the oil that you are using.
TRACE OIL = we used it in our refrigeration compressors systems on the ships. Look like the John Deere stuff.
👍
I wonder if that dye would permanently stain the sight glass on my Deere? I'll have to contact them. It's hard to read even with a sight glass.
good question, I went to the local deere dealer first to get this stuff but they didn't have it in stock, ebay got it to me in 3 days, 7$ I think, 12$ when added shipping,
Sand the dipstick so it's not shiny be much easier to read the fluid level
Add ATF free red dye & it's a better fluid for alot less money.
👍👍👍
I bet I can guess what kind of trees are going to catch on the next video
Whew. I was thinking mama cat wasn't gonna make it in the video. Sure seems like that dipstick should be easier to read.
Did I just see a Pole Cat ( usually said about an animal like a skunk) But sure enough I saw one!!!!! A putty Cat!!!!!!!!!!! Get Fluid but may two would be more colorful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I use John Deere hydraulic oil for that very reason comes already dyed
Good to know 👍👍
Think I may be just bad to the bone! Bin telling mechanics my dip stick too short n don’t reach the oil no more could I have longer one...get varied responses
Why Mahindra it is Indian made?
A seven dollar insurance policy. Yep, good value.
I think you should NOT be cranking down on that hydraulic fill cap with pliers of any kind unless Mahindra is different that the tractors with which I have experience. Hand firm only. The tranny case should not be pressurized, the cap seal is to keep dirt and water out. The tranny case is vented somewhere anyway. Consult manual or dealership. I have considered the dye, but if I have put a strip of 100 grit sand paper on the table saw table and then drag one surface of the dipper over that to make lines of scratches across the dipper, then the oil shows.
hello Rooster, per Mahindra you are suppose to tighten the cap with pliers. this was showed to me when I bought the tractor by the mechanic that gets them ready for delivery,
the sand paper would probably work also, but this dye also helps to see any leaks that might happen down the road as well, and for 7$ it was an easy decision
thanks for watching,
@@OutoftheWoods0623Goo deal, then. Carry on!
Let’s hope Mahindra will still honour their warranty after using an aftermarket product from their competition...😳
checked with dealer before using, I am already a step ahead of your comment,
@7:00 Mamma Cat thinks she's an owl. :)
That's frustrating! Probably should of bought a JD 🤓
well John Deere may also have the same issue not sure, never owned one of those green machines,
my New Holland Tractor has same issue, and for most people it's not a big deal and it's not for me either I just like to make things better if possible.
I own a JD 4105 , no issues with this problem. Just messing with you. Send cooler weather to Southern Oklahoma, North Texas 🤓
shewwww maybe I need to go Green lol,
@@OutoftheWoods0623, my only regret, is not getting a cab JD tractor. My neck of the woods is a beating on summer heat, and insects, dust. But there high as a cat's back 🤓
yes a cab tractor is in my future in a few years,
I just lay my dipstick flat on a paper towel.
TheGhung Fu tried that. Didn’t work for me too good
@@nathanelliott9013 That die is good stuff. A buddy of mine is a contractor and puts it in his new equipment, mainly so he can spot leaks easy out on the job.
Never start the tractor while standing on the ground beside the tractor NEVER !
This thing. Will only start in neutral and with the parking brake engaged. No danger here.
