For those who are concerned....I am feeling better from Covid. I'm on day 4 now and feel about 50% better. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers! Catch me live later today on facebook.com/stoneyridgefarmer
So happy you are feeling better I was sick for about 5 weeks I had terrible thick mucus and not matter what I did it would not come up or go down god bless you and continued in the feeling better department
What I do on my center link I add a quick link with the double sided thread with the long nut usually used to connect to chains. And I have it there to no my reference and also to hang a weight off of it so Incase a snap it won't snap and whip away
I always paint the hooks and the center with high viz rattle can paint. Because I’m always in the dark or the snow or the mud and they are the parts of the chain I’m usually looking for.
I use kitty litter jugs because of the location of the handle on the jug. It’s located more on top of the jug and helps level out the weight when carrying. Great tip, I started doing this a couple years ago after seeing it on another channel and have been very happy with such a simple hack!
I ran a crew truck with a large assortment of chains. We would stamp the hooks with the length. I also like to run some with a slip hook on one end and a grab hook on the other. My collection of chains in the shop is in a square kitty litter bucket. They work great and the square design doesn't waste space like a traditional pail.
I've been using square pails for all my chains including my tire chains for about thirty years now. And when snow season is over I spray the chains down with penetrating oil or spray.
Lol. Genius. Just watching this makes me think of the dozens or even hundreds of times I’ve gone and pulled out a chain that was laying in a pile and had it falling all over the place and having to get all rusty because the floor was wet.
excellent idea that I have been using for years. I'm amazed others haven't figured it out yet. Almost anything in a 1 gallon size will hold a fair sized chain. You just need to find the right one for you. I got the idea from an old guy who kept his chains in a 5 gallon bucket and got tired of fishing around for the ends. I mentioned he should just put the hooks on the lip... and presto... everything was organized!
That trick for chain storage as been round for many a year cut a hole in the flatter ones to drop them in and hook the hooks on the cut great work mr stoney farm
Yeah, works good. I like to use an old 5-gallon oil bucket. Same deal, holds a couple chains. Leave a little residual oil in there to keep the rust down. Good channel, like your content.
Good Idea. I have always used different sized buckets depending on size and length of chain. Keeping some oil on them helps to prevent any rusting as well.
Great idea for chain that's not too large or too heavy. Some of the chains I use are a heavier gauge 50 feet long and weigh in at 80 lbs each. For those, I use a steel 5 gal oil buckets with a section cut out of the lid. The smaller chains I have in my 4x4s will definitely benefit from this. Thanks!
i like the use for old oil jugs i have boat anchor chains that would be good for but i always use those shaker jugs to put sand and salt in for putting in car when you need traction in snow and for shaking on walkways
Great tip Josh! I also use plastic coffee cans with the lids for my fencing needs (stapes, nails, wire, etc.) they fit into a back pack which works great when repairs are needed on the back side of the property where I can’t get to very easy.
Small trash can bag over the top will keep the rain out and prevent rusting. Great idea about using old the old large plastic jugs and drilling holes in the bottom. We have 10, 33 gallon trash cans we put yard trash, leaves etc in and I drilled holes in the bottom of each one to prevent rain collecting in those.
Great tip Josh. I will gathering up all our containers soon. Another idea before you cut the holes in the bottom, pour a two leader of cola in there to get the loose rust off, and it should eliminate orange stained gloves.
Josh it’s always a good idea to pour some used motor oil (about quart) in the jugs. Give the jugs a little shake to coat the chain. Keeps chains from rusting. I use old chemical jugs as the opening is bigger.
Glad you're feeling better Josh. Great video on a simple "farm hack" because I'm sure there are many people who can benefit from it 🤠👍 Thanks for sharing!
I use a 5 gallon bucket, it holds all my chains so they are always in one place when I need them. I don't use them very often and this method works well for me. If I were to need just one chain in a particular place I would definitely use this jug method. I'm thinking this would work well for my chain fall.
5 gallon bucket won't fit in the average truck tool box or storage box on a trailer....that's why this works great. Buckets work for sure...but this is a great way to shrink the size of your storage container...and reuse something that would go in the recycle bin or trash
I do close to same thing but I use old cat litter containers and keep 1 old oil jug to emerge chains into oil when needed to keep them flexible then let them drip dry back into a oil change container before use
Mine are leaky battered old galvanized buckets. Hang the first hook on the rim, pay the chain in, and the hook the second hook on the rim. Doubling over not required. I can hang one on my 3 point quick hitch hooks. Drainage is essential.
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer they are probably just a 12 qt. pails and my chains are long enough to fill them. Helpers have run them over and with a little hammering they are ready to return to service. For truck bed containers a tether with a carabiner to a tie down eye is a good idea. Secure your loads everybody!
It's the simple things that are often overlooked! 👍 I just started using a 5 gallon bucket last year. Same concept place the hooks on the edge of the bucket. Hope you get back to your normal self soon! 👍😁
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer That’s not a problem for me, as I only put them away dry. I agree you have a great idea and if I used chains on a regular basis, I would probably adopt your storage method. Thanks
That seems like a cool idea. But for me here in the central valley of California, I store old engine oil in the plastic oil jugs and they don't last very long in the sun. For my chains, binders hitches, draw bars, etc. I built a rack with pipe and rebar. My cousin built a large rack back when we were growing up on the dairy. Everything is hanging up and visible. It worked for us and it works for me now. Except I need to expand it now. I hope you are feeling better. And keep up the good work. I love watching your adventures.
Great video, atleast I'm not the only one who stores there chains in jugs!, I normally use large cat litter jugs or the 2.5 gallon oil jugs, even gives you room to put a chain binder in with the chain too.
Cool....many ways to skin a cat for sure....most tools come in bags now..I remember when dewalt tools had a hard case back when I got my first 18v in 1999....still going strong!
The handle portion of the jug should fit nicely on the chain-holder uprights of my logging winch. Sometime i hang bar oil by the handle on these uprights either side.
Fabulous idea! So why HAVEN'T I been doing that all along? Well, 1) I don't have jugs like that around, 2) I don't have that many chains to store, and almost never need to transport them anyway, and 3) apparently, I'm just not that smart -- lol! Great content, as always!
I use a small lunch box cooler to put my chain small sledgehammer and the receiver hitch all in the same box don't forget to drill a hole in the bottom of the cooler for water to drain out
I use long boxes made from pallet wood, keeps them dry and I can hang them from a peg on the wall out of the way. The soft wood absorbs a spray of oil and helps stop the links from rusting. I paint the hooks different colours according to the chain length, so I'm not loading the wrong ones out or worrying about putting them back in the right container. Glad you are feeling a bit better 🙂
I use an empty kitty litter pail. Kitty litter is heavy so the plastic is much thicker, plus you can still use the lid to keep the chain, and your vehicle clean. Small pail for the smaller chain, large pail for the large chain, plus they won't tip over like a jug will. Put a zip tie on the center link and you won't have to keep measuring for the middle of the chain.
How is with all the chains i have laying around and i seriously haven't thought about using old oil containers. Thanks man! It's cool when a person can Repurpose something like that, like i use filing cabinets that my company literally had thrown away and i got permission to dig them out of the scrap bin. And man i have many of them filled with odds and ends, so when i leave this realm my sons get all my stuff. P.s. Good to hear you're feeling better, and you sound at peace with things.
I swear I think you put one of those hooks on the chain upside down. 😂😂😂 Yup, that a great idea. I'll be keep my chain like that from now on. Awesome!!! Look like you're feeling better too. Great!!!
For those who are concerned....I am feeling better from Covid. I'm on day 4 now and feel about 50% better. Thanks for all of your thoughts and prayers! Catch me live later today on facebook.com/stoneyridgefarmer
Yes we been praying, Lisa
Good to hear...
Round 2 for you?
Sorry to hear Josh. Is this your second go round with COVID?
So happy you are feeling better I was sick for about 5 weeks I had terrible thick mucus and not matter what I did it would not come up or go down god bless you and continued in the feeling better department
Mark/paint the center link of the chain. knowing the center point comes in handy for more then just storage.
great idea!
I use a piece of wire for this as it doesn't wear off.
Your comment is great. We paint the coast guard’s anchor chains to identify shot lengths. Thanks
I use kitty litter jugs because of the location of the handle on the jug. It’s located more on top of the jug and helps level out the weight when carrying. Great tip, I started doing this a couple years ago after seeing it on another channel and have been very happy with such a simple hack!
Spraypaint the midpoint of chains. It makes rigging easier as well. Attach chain the same length on both ends to load and put hook on painted link.
That is a good clever idea, have a tip for you put a zip tie / cable tie on the centre link and trim flush for quick finding of centre
or a shot of spray paint right
I ran a crew truck with a large assortment of chains. We would stamp the hooks with the length. I also like to run some with a slip hook on one end and a grab hook on the other. My collection of chains in the shop is in a square kitty litter bucket. They work great and the square design doesn't waste space like a traditional pail.
great idea for sure!
I use an old metal tool box to hold my chain but those plastic jugs look like a great new way. Left over oil in the jug can't hurt the chain at all.
I've been using square pails for all my chains including my tire chains for about thirty years now. And when snow season is over I spray the chains down with penetrating oil or spray.
Hi Josh, So glad that You are feeling better! Hope that it won't be long before You are past that CRUD! Prayers up & BLESSED BE! Batman
Lol. Genius. Just watching this makes me think of the dozens or even hundreds of times I’ve gone and pulled out a chain that was laying in a pile and had it falling all over the place and having to get all rusty because the floor was wet.

That's how I do it. 5 gallon bucket hooks on the lip. Thing is so heavy it never moves out of it's spot in the truck.
You're right - this is a great hack that I think I'll have to use...and I hate hitting my knee (or shin) on the trailer hitch too!
Love that tip. Glad you are feeling better. Appreciate your dedication..
Glad your feeling better...
At the VERY moment I thought about weep holes you mentioned cutting holes. Great video!
That trick for chain storage as been round for many a year cut a hole in the flatter ones to drop them in and hook the hooks on the cut great work mr stoney farm
yessir...I'm quite certain I'm not the first to try this...I saw it in the back of a friends work truck about a year ago!
Yeah, works good. I like to use an old 5-gallon oil bucket. Same deal, holds a couple chains. Leave a little residual oil in there to keep the rust down. Good channel, like your content.
tough to store a 5 gallon bucket in your tool box though....try this you'll love it
yeah oil bucket is better
Now you've got me hunting down plastic jugs!!! LOL
Two years later....I found this amazing video!!!
Tks mate!
Regards!
bam! Glad ya saw it!
Great idea, hole to drain water is a great idea too
Good Idea.
I have always used different sized buckets depending on size and length of chain. Keeping some oil on them helps to prevent any rusting as well.
Great Hack. Praying your feeling better today.
have any storade hacks for binders and straps
Great video can’t believe I’ve never tried this but definitely will be trying it on my farm now ! And as always keep the great videos coming!

i use a milk creat on my 4 wheeler.make`s easy access when u need the chair a lot,luv your idea,if u do not have to use the chain much.awesome
Crazy Great to see you feeling better!!!!
Great idea Josh. Good to see your feeling better. 👍🇺🇸
i like the use for old oil jugs i have boat anchor chains that would be good for but i always use those shaker jugs to put sand and salt in for putting in car when you need traction in snow and for shaking on walkways
You could also spray some oil in the container after you put the chain for long term storage.
Exactly what I was looking for, for my newly acquired chain. Simple but effective!
I use the narrow mouth hooks on chain so they can hook back to the chain. The hooks you used are for lifting.
Nice Tip. I’m constantly fighting chains.
You can also get frosting buckets from bakeries. Great for those bigger chains!
Excellent tip. I’ve never seen anyone do this before, and it’s genius! -Chad
Wish someone would have shown me this years ago can’t believe I never thought of it awesome
Great tip Josh! I also use plastic coffee cans with the lids for my fencing needs (stapes, nails, wire, etc.) they fit into a back pack which works great when repairs are needed on the back side of the property where I can’t get to very easy.
Nice hack ...been usin buckets
I like using those rectangular YELLOW cat litter buckets, not just for chain but other storage needs
Same

Like Dylan McDonnell stated below, those 3 Gallon or 5ish Gallon Cat Litter Containers work real well!
Awesome video! Love what your doing with the farm
Glad you enjoy it! Many more to come....hopefully I beat this darn covid mess!
Always a pleasure , Merry Christmas
Josh it’s always a good idea to pour some used motor oil (about quart) in the jugs. Give the jugs a little shake to coat the chain. Keeps chains from rusting. I use old chemical jugs as the opening is bigger.
lol....use them chains...and they won't rust up on ya bhhahhaha
Great tip. Loved it. I'll start saving my old jugs.
Beautiful idea Josh, clever idea man.
That is a fantastic idea Josh, the next kitty litter jug I get my pull chain will get a new home. And I bet my friends will like this idea too.
Glad you're feeling better Josh. Great video on a simple "farm hack" because I'm sure there are many people who can benefit from it 🤠👍 Thanks for sharing!
Great idea, can't believe this is the first I've ever seen this
Thanks for the idea I think I'll use one the tall Folgers coffee can.
awe...but no handle

Love this hack... nice way to recycle👍
Glad to hear your feeling better..
😆 bloopers.. n ouchie
Have a good day ❄❄❄
Yep that’s the best tip I’ve seen in awhile… thank you
Greetings from Reno, Nevada.
This does work good. Dad and I have been using gallon paint cans for years. Just flatten the rim on each side for the hooks.
Hi.... Josh, thank you for showing your video homestead 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 bye 👋 👕🐔🐓🐥🐕🐄🐐🐖🌱🏡🎥👍👍👍
Mine are leaky battered old galvanized buckets. Hang the first hook on the rim, pay the chain in, and the hook the second hook on the rim. Doubling over not required. I can hang one on my 3 point quick hitch hooks. Drainage is essential.
yeppers...this is just a more compact way of doing it
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer they are probably just a 12 qt. pails and my chains are long enough to fill them. Helpers have run them over and with a little hammering they are ready to return to service. I use a couple of milk crates, they hold several chains and the flat sides give you a great place to place the hooks
That’s what I use...
It's the simple things that are often overlooked! 👍 I just started using a 5 gallon bucket last year. Same concept place the hooks on the edge of the bucket. Hope you get back to your normal self soon! 👍😁
I keep my G70 5/16” chains in a $5 ammo can from harbor freight. Fits perfect, easy to carry, keeps them out of the weather.
ammo can holds moisture...this allows the chain to breath a bit more so ya don't have to reach in the can and grab a wet rusty chain my brotha
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer That’s not a problem for me, as I only put them away dry. I agree you have a great idea and if I used chains on a regular basis, I would probably adopt your storage method. Thanks
Thanks for the idea
Great idea. Glad you’re feeling better
A "Grab" hook on one end, and a "Slip" hook on the other end makes a more useful chain.
Stoney Ridge Farmer get well soon
Great storage hack. Wish I'd thought of that long ago!
Great video
I found a Tym tractor in North Carolina they will deliver it to VA for 600 dollars thank you for the information love your channel.
there ya go!
Hey Josh thank you for the video I thought it was an excellent idea and I hope that you get well soon
thanks scott I'm on the mend buddy! Thank goodness!
Thk u. Sharing this here in Arkansas
when I was in the line division, of my squadron, in the Navy. 3 tie down chains were all I could carry at one time.
That's a brilliant idea. Put a bit of motor oil in there and not have to worry about a rusty chain either.
I would love to see a walk around of that Toyota hidden behind that truck your working out of!
take a few mins and watch some more stoney ridge vids....you'll see it used alot
Super video Josh I would never thought of doing that doing now thanks for sharing this information 🇺🇲 WOOOOOO 🇺🇲

good tip for sure i feel kinda dumb now lol. Time to replace the 5 gal bucket and the milk crate I am usin now. Thanks for the tip
I use a dewalt case has carry handle and seals.
