I love imagining Morrissey hearing it for the first time. Like Johnny writes the coolest riff ever and Moz is just like "guys guys I know exactly what to sing over this"
Playing that riff and singing at the same time is insane *Edit* : I put up a video of me attempting to play and sing this if you want to check it out 😬
I love your videos! Also I think he’s just strumming the chords to it while social plays the picking melody but either way he’s a damn beast bro!! Love Johnny!
@@morgancoady4943 cheers Morgan! Yeah I did wonder actually if that was the case haha. He's doing a good job then because I looked closely and couldn't tell that he wasn't playing the riff still
Agree that this is Marr's most beautiful, technically challenging riff. It looks like he's strumming while singing - so either Doviak is playing the riff, or they've looped Johnny.
One of the best songs ever written and one of my all time favourites, such beautifully melodic guitar parts painting their own picture with characteristics, dynamics and wonderful, lovely, warm guitar tone written and played in an amazing style like no other great guitarists and songwriters who have gone before and graced us with their music. To think Johnny was 21/22yrs old when he wrote this masterpiece and was recorded for the album The Queen Is Dead released in 1986, amazing to write at such a young age. I’ve played the guitar for over 30yrs myself and I am a good guitarist and songwriter and would be ecstatic if I’d of written a song as good as this even now at the ripe old age of 47!
My home town!! Met him in jumbo records and he signed my album and he gave me a hug and said thank you for the support! Great chat with him, what a bloke he is!
It’s almost touching that he sings Morrissey’s lyrics even though he supposedly hated them and hated that Morrissey wrote such ridiculously trivial lyrics to what Johnny considered one of his best songs. Supposedly he felt his music on this song deserved lyrics with more gravitas than the mockery Morrissey wrote, but here he is 40 yrs later singing them the way Mozz wrote them.
One of the best under rated guitar songs ever written . I wish he played this song on the killers tour in Philly 2022. Love Johnny Marr , a very true humble British gentleman and amazing musician 🎸 . He can also sing 🎤 with the best of them too.
Qué pasada!!! No tengo palabras. Gracias por compartir. Me encanta esta melodía y me encanta el estilo con que la toca. Un vídeo bien grabado para captar tan mágico momento. Gracias ❤️
Just found this straight after watching the Smiths last (and only) live performance of it, Johnny Marr is some kind of god. Never knew it until recently, glad I've discovered the path to enlightenment ✌️
Brilliant . I’ve never heard Jonny, sing this before, which got me thinking with all the COVID misery, isn’t about time they had a reunion? Life really is too short. Come on boys, give us something to look forward to.
I’d love to agree, The Smiths we’re huge for me back in the day but I’d struggle with Morrissey a bit now. Better to leave the memories where they are I feel.
I know there is literally no way the four of them could ever reunite but I thought maybe the two of them should get together and do an album. But after the stuff that's gone on in the Press recently between the two of them, that's obviously not ever going to happen. And anyway, you can find guitarists that can imitate Johnny Marr at this point, but I just don't know how many bass players are out there that could come up with bass lines like Andy, that stuff was brilliant... so I guess Morrissey figured hr might as well just stick with his own bandmates and he clearly has no interest in being friends with Johnny again. Johnny said something interesting a handful of years ago. He made the allusion that he has reached out to Morrissey on numerous occasions but that he was not reciprocated so he finally just stopped reaching out. I don't really know exactly what that means. I do know that the two of them had to collaborate and sign off on the greatest hits thing that was put out a decade or so ago. But I do not know if they even met in person for that
@@davidtaylor4975 I'm aware of all the great guitarist that were before and after. But Johnny stands out. A completely different approach. An apreggiated melodic style of playing that just cant be emulated. He can play all types of different guitar styles, and he has. But he chooses not to. He doesn't need to shred. Its not the notes he plays, but the notes he doesn't play. The guy is brilliant. My opinion, anyways.
It was before the pandemic and I was dining out with 5 friends near Dalston Kingsland station in London. One of them had to take a night bus just outside the station so we waited for it with him. A 149 bus came but it wasn't my friend's so we kept talking - Johnny zoomed past through our circle to catch it but we did not recognise him until he was in and the indoor lights lit him. We then started to shout "JOHNNY! JOHNNY! " while there were queuing passengers but he just smiled coyly as the bus left
Probably the best melody of electric guitar melted with bass sound of all Smith production - it’s my favorite and it just soothes my ears as much as my soul - ❤️ - I don’t even bother “Maurice”’s voice is not there to play around this crazy soul sound

FINALLY! So happy to see him perform his magnum opus. Literally the most beautiful song ever written, instrumentally speaking.
My favorite from the smiths. The best song of them and the álbum TQID.
Just one little bit missing, otherwise perfection.
Too bad Morrissey wrote such naff lyrics for it.

Marr is a genius. Went to see him at a small venue couple of years back best gig I've ever been to.
One of the absolute best riffs in rock...
Got to be the defining Smiths song for me, this whole album is still relevant even today and its getting on for being 40yrs old in a few more yrs.
There really is a beautiful ebb and flow to Marr's playing. Like gentle, sparkly waves.
Goosebumps..what a genius.
One of the most touching and emotional melodies ever written, definitively unique and timeless.
Hands down my favorite Smiths song. Mostly because of that beautiful guitar riff.

I was thinking the exact same thing! But the truth is, if he doesn't play The Smiths songs half the people not into it and be there and he knows it.
There has been plenty of interviews where he stated he backed Morrisey with his lyrics. He was actually fine with Morriseys lyrics on this song.
Love this thank you for pointing it out 💓
It's just rumour though
The lyrics are great imo, the mundane repetition makes the final ‘send me your pillow’ verse so much more impactful
