Morrissey - Sydney - December 11 2023

- The Smiths were my favourite band. They probably still are (although it’s hard having a favourite band who haven’t recorded anything in 36 years). So I’d never pass up the opportunity of seeing Morrissey live. I find his solo material inconsistent, although there have been enough great songs to easily fill a concert many times over. Love him or hate him (and there are plenty in both categories), Morrissey is an iconic figure. At the beginning of the show he struck me as being a little unwell, and I feared we’d get a shortened performance. But perhaps he was just feeling the heat (Sydney had been very hot the previous few days), and as the songs progressed, he seemed to pick up, drawing his energy from the crowd. In the end we actually got one more song than his previous shows, 20 in total. I recorded nine, although not the nine I’d originally planned on:
Suedehead (00:13)
How Soon Is Now? (04:45)
Irish Blood, English Heart (09:35)
Girlfriend in a Coma (12:17)
Our Frank (14:21)
Jack the Ripper (17:50)
Please, Please, Please Let Me Get What I Want (22:10)
Everyday Is Like Sunday (26:37)
Sweet and Tender Hooligan (30:32)
This was my third time seeing Morrissey but the first time I’ve tried videoing one of his performances. It was far from an easy experience. A camera malfunction and a significantly rearranged setlist kept me on my toes, causing me to miss a couple of the songs I’d really hoped to record, and most noticeable with this upload, the beginning of “How Soon is Now?”. Still, all things being considered, I think I’ve caught much of the excitement of what some of his diehard fans online are saying was the best concert of this tour.

my favourite artist of all time! I was there and it was an awesome show! What a night! My 6th time seeing him!
It was a brilliant night. So good to see Morrissey again. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.
Catherine then you know what he says at the end of every day is like Sunday... Restero', cerchero'?
I’ve also seen him 6 times.
1990s - Wembley Arena
2014 - Alexandra Palace
2020 - Leeds Arena
2022 - London Palladium
2022 - Brixton Academy
2023 - Troxy, London
Nobody like him.
❤ mr Stephen Patrick Morrissey we love you so much and we love your music please when you going to release the new album when we going to see you again on a concert I’m listening to music from 1984 and every year you just getting better and better unbelievable you are the best thank you so much make us very happy and this is unbelievable. Second generation of my kids to music it’s amazing thank you.
Read yesterday that Morrissey has finally bought the rights to the 'new' album so it should be final released soon. Good news.
Oh I’m so sickened oh I’m so sickened now. What a performer! ❤MOZ
MAGIDTRAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Morrissey is eternal . Fantastic.
The drummer is amazing!!!
I mean, omg!!
I thought the whole band was very good, but yes, the drummer does have a certain appeal.
This guy is ageing like a very fine British wine, so glad he's still out there doing it. PS: love the photo of Germaine Greer on the bass drum.
Not sure if "ageing like a very fine British wine" is suppose to be a compliment (LOL) but I'll assume it is. Yes, he's still going strong. Let's hope he can finally release his new album soon. I hadn't notice Germaine on the drum kit. I'll have to take a closer look.
It's a compliment. @@Peter_LiveMusic
@@richalderson6069 👍🎼🙃
Fine British wine?? Is there such a thing?? 😂😂😂
@@DanHunterSportsWriter Yes, it's called Morrissey. Drink it and it makes you quite happily intoxicated.
Charismatic. Great stage presence.❤🎉❤
There certainly is something about him.
The greatest of the greatest
Thank you Peter.
👍
One of the masterpiece in this world, thanks God you exist.
Great footage! The sound is really good! 🙌🏽
Thanks very much. It was a great concert in a beautiful theatre.
Thank you for posting.
I find Morriissey’s solo work to be beyond anything ever in terms of smarts and even musical quality.
It dawned on me recently that Low in High School is the soundtrack for so much these days and his writing will stand head and shoulders above anything ever in eternity. Really who or what can top it if one is actually paying attention
His song writing skills are sometimes lost in all the other 'chatter' around him. Yet, they speak to people like few other songs do.
wow..thx u!..its a labour of love recording your fav artist..again thx u and keep it up..;-)
I really do enjoy videoing concerts. I like the creative challenge. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you friend!!!
You're most welcome. It was a terrific performance.
Nice one Peter. Sounded great and a good performance - a bit of Morriseymania going on at the end there with a couple of fans... lol - I seen The Smiths in the Carlisle Market Hall in 1984, sneaked in through the side doors while the doormen weren't looking.
Everything is better when it's free, though they were good.
Very jealous of you seeing The Smiths (and for free). They never toured Australia. And stupidly I didn't see Johnny Marr when he was last here. This was a great show (although I was frustrated by the greatly changed song order).
Also, thanks for recording some of Moz’s commentary. He made some cracking remarks!
No problem. I usually like to record a little commentary and include it in my videos if appropriate. I missed the controversial comments he made about Princess Diana. Actually, I didn't find them controversial at all but the media decided (without any context) that they were.
Thank you, great video of such a unique singer. At the time I was much more into The Cure and alikes, but How Soon Is Now is one of my all time favourites ever since I heard it.
My love of The Cure predates my love of The Smiths. I saw The Cure in Sydney in 1980. Sadly, The Smiths never came to Australia. So many great Smith's songs. Thanks for commenting.
Bravissimo. tanti ricordi positivi e tanta nostalgia.🤝
Sì, tanti ricordi meravigliosi. Grazie per il commento
Morrissey will be here in Brazil in February. I've been following the shows on this tour online to get a feel for what I can expect if I go to the show. Unfortunately, according to the tour's setlist, songs like "I Know its over" (my favorite) will not be played, nor will The Boy With the Thorn in His Side and There Is a Light That Never Goes Out. I'm sad about that. Despite this, the setlist of his solo work is impeccable. All my favorite songs from his career were included. As I live far from São Paulo and Brazil is huge, I haven't decided to buy a ticket yet. But this show excited me. Thank you for sharing your experience. Hug from a Brazilian fan.
Yes, so many wonderful Smiths songs not included, but of course, it's not a Smiths concert (if only). However, as you say plenty of other great songs from his solo career. When expensive travel costs are involved it's always a bit of a risk arranging to see Morrissey. Numerous dates on this Asia/Australia/NZ tour were cancelled. If you can tie your visit to São Paulo to something else as well, then it might be a risk worth taking. Still wonderful seeing Morrissey live. I hope you do get to see him. Thanks for commenting.
Same here. I was about to buy a ticket for Brasilia. I’d already booked a hotel (I live in the Curitiba area, but the concert in Sao Paulo was scheduled for a weekday), gave it some more thought, and gave up. Then… the concerts in Brazil were postponed. There’s always the “Morrissey Risk” to deal with.
This is fantastic! I was there, and your footage really captures the vibe. I have been a Smiths fan since the beginning, and I have been lucky enough to have met Morrissey and seen him in concert a few times. This concert was great (and my 18 y.o. daughter loved it, and is currently learning some of the guitar riffs). Thanks for uploading.
Yes, a great night. I always hope to capture something of the feeling of a performance. Very difficult to do of course, Nothing is like actually being there. But I am happy how this turned out. Thanks for commenting.
great. again peak of his job. best band.
Wonderful concert. I thought his new band were very good.
I love him is my super favorite singer his funny his fun hi love to be loved by his fans I mean he is special spectacular I whach his videos every day I never tire watching I saw him in Washington DC October 18 I don’t missed any second him I love this wonderful funny man Gods bless him always what talent person
Wow!
Indeed !!!
Jesus! This guy kicks ass!
He's a good ass kicker, and there are plenty who need it. 😂 He's also great in concert.
our favorite actor !
Excellent view and sound/image quality. Thanks a lot for this.
Thanks very much. I try very hard to get a good seat for both visual and sound quality. I learnt early on that being right at the front doesn't usually get you the best recorded sound. But then being any further back means you have to contend with all the heads in front of you. It's always a bit of a balance getting the right place. It would have been great to have gotten a few close up shots of Morrissey but I think the better quality sound makes up for that. Thanks for commenting.
@@Peter_LiveMusic Absolutely! I think it's perfect as it is: very clear view, amazing sound and picture and it's still very close. Recordings from the first few rows are usually quite bad in every aspect. You can see him very close from there, true, but everything else is bad as far as video recordings go. Here on the other hand everything works great, you can see the whole band, not just him and aside from the better quality in sound you get a much better view of the stage.
Thanks a lot for sharing it.
No words to describe musical perfection … Mozz is just God 🙏 love you so much and forever …
❤ FABULOUS ❤ I was there on the 10th but couldn’t scalp a ticket for the 11th 😭 YET HERE IT IS! 🎉 Thank you so much - great job in editing ❤
I shouldn't tell you this now but I had a spare ticket - sorry. It was a terrific night. Thanks for your kind words.

Yes, it was a terrific night and a great way for me to end my concerts for 2023. Thanks for commenting.
What nights?
@@Peter_LiveMusicPS what is he saying at the end of Everyday is Like Sunday- cerchero? Is it Spanish?
@@julianaferrone8734 Sorry, I don't know what he's saying but I was wondering myself. You need to ask one of the many Spanish speakers who has posted comments here.
@@Peter_LiveMusic how many times did you see him
He sounds so great still!! ❤️🔥
Indeed he does !!!
Thanks for sharing. I was in the nosebleed section on night 1. Still very very brilliant. 6th time seeing him and hopefully more to come xx
Yes, very much hoping for more to come. But first a new album. Glad you enjoyed the concert. Thanks for commenting.
I'll tell you what.. My wife got us tickets for one of the shows Caesars Palace in LV last summer and it was a great show. But this show in Australia. Kind of like that show last week from Japan looks terrific! He's into a crowds into it. Everybody's into it. What else do you want?
It was a terrific performance and the audience loved him (of course). I did feel it started off a little 'slow' (maybe that was just me) but it certainly soon built. Thanks for commenting.
I Love You.
awesome!
Thank you for uploading ....
Hope you enjoyed it. Thanks for commenting.
Thank you for posting, was unable to get to recent NY shows here!
Hope you enjoyed it. Not the same as getting to an actual show of course, but at least a glimpse of what it was like. Thanks for commenting.

Great video many thanks for posting he was great in Liverpool UK this year

W MOZ! Thanks for this video.
You're very welcome 👍
w morrissey. un saluto a tutti da Palermo, Sicilia, italia.😊😊
👋
Really miss the old band.
How Soon Is Now? must have been a highlight , it sounds incredible!! That track was years ahead of its time, because it sounds as exciting today as it did in the 80s!!
Minha gente vcs não tem noção o quanto eu amo essa canção linda da minha vida ,eu amooooooooo
What would the world be like without this kind of talent? It’s coming one day and we’ll all be wishing we were there.
Lo esperamos en Bs As no canceles x fa !!!!!
🤞
Morrissey❤
How soon is now, was my theme song from the 80s
It's such a great song, and I think says a lot to a lot of people. It's interesting reading how Johnny came up with the music. It's really unlike any of their other songs.
Great footage, I was at second Sydney show. It made my year that he played Jack the Ripper 👏
It was a great night and a terrific version of Jack the Ripper. Morrissey and the band were in great form. Glad you like my video and thanks for commenting.
everyday is like sunday.
Loving all the handshakes! No Boz playing this show?
I wanna see the face of the person who got his shirt…they probably passed out! How I wish I was at the concert! Amazing! ❤️🔥
Bien, bien , bieeeeeeeeeeen!!!!!
Seems like yesterday that I saw moz in Adelaide last tour. He doesn't look really any older tbh. Band looks completely different.
I last saw him in Wollongong in 2016. He hasn't changed much. However, it is a new band. I thought they were very good but I've seem quite a bit of online discussion with fans preferring the old band.
viva Moz !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Apparently he really wasn’t feeling well. He cancelled the shows here in Los Angeles in January
He cancelled NZ straight after this. Yes, I hear he has medical advice to take things easy. Hope he feels better soon.
'Glamorous glue' jeans?
That thrashmetal rendition of Sweet and tender hooligan brings out the excitement in the fans and the worst in the bouncers(security?) They obviously did not read the memo on how Morrissey fans behave during his concerts. It's hard to watch.😢
I rather like the effect/excitement but I can't help think that it was somewhat staged. Firstly, there were no GA tickets on sale to the public so I can only assume that they went out to some fan group. Secondly, there were no attempts to breach the stage until the encore when numerous people got up. Finally, those who were grabbed by security were not dragged off to the side, which is what usually happens, but were returned to where they originally were. Very thoughtful of security. Maybe I'm completely wrong, but I get the impression that those diehard fans with special tickets were told to stay off the stage with the exception of the last song. I'm sure someone will tell me if I am wrong.
As for the 'thrashmetal rendition', a little of that is my fault. I failed to turn my sound recorder on, so all the sound is from my camera. With loud music, the camera compresses the sound, thus adding some distortion. It normally really annoys me which is why I have the much better, seperate sound recorder. But in this case, I don't mind it. I think it adds to the frantic energy of the last song.
@@Peter_LiveMusic all in all a fair point I suppose, i have not been to any gigs since 2014. I am in mainland Europe.
I have no clue about this gig and ticket allocation and other than the usual stage invaders that to a certain extent I believe were always allowed and appreciated by Morrissey.
As for the thrasmetal version of Sweet and tender hooligan. I referred to the speed and guitar playing. That could have been Slash of guns &roses playing. Or a revised version by Megadeth or slayer. The subtleness( is that a word?)is gone. The video is very much appreciated. The sound wasvfine by me Thanks from Amsterdam🙋
@@gsgacc 👍
Yes, I am one of those diehard fans. Certain people get regular handshakes and are treated much less harshly than a random person they've never seen before at his gigs if they attempt a stage invasion.
@@mozzerianmisanthrope406 Did you get to shake his hand? Must have been terrific right up front.
I hate The Hits. The B-sides are where his material shines.
Mixed blood American heart.
He’s such a drama queen
went half around he world to see this thanks for the upload my video is shit compared to this! Thanks
Maybe, but your videos are what you saw. No one else's video can remind you of the experience anywhere near as much as your own do. Hope you enjoyed the Sydney show and the travel was worth it. Thanks for commenting.
*Good for him to actually complete a booked tour in Australia. I can't remember the year (maybe 90s/early 2000s), but he came, got 'ill' and left without honoring the dates*
But he actually didn't. The first gig of the tour in Perth was cancelled on the day!!!
Morrissey's cancellations are infamous. If you're a fan it's a risk you just have to take. I probably wouldn't make expensive travel/accommodation plans to see him. Thankfully, a Sydney show only involves a couple of hours drive for me. No good ranting and raving about his no-shows. That's just Morrissey. Anyway, needless-to-say, I'm very glad this concert went ahead. A great night.
@@Peter_LiveMusic exactly the reason I didn’t bother travelling from regional NSW to Melbourne or Sydney. Have seen Moz 6 times so wasn’t too sad about missing out.
Learnt this lesson in Auckland yesterday.
@@PiggoNZ Yes, I felt very sorry for all his NZ fans, especially those travelling from other parts of the country. He certainly doesn't endear himself to those who miss out.
