This dude is one of the greatest drummers of this era. It amazes me that a lot of people who are versed in his genre of music don't know of him. Man I wish the audio was better in this video. That's one of my favorite solos. Quick but powerful.
Do you realize how hard it is to record a drum set with a single, omni mic….Let alone that had no gain adjustments, because it's part of a camera? Granted a more professional group would have recorded the sound through the board, give them a break, great for having to compress all the clipping out of it!
SgtMantis well when you get some access to plutonium and install a flux capacitor in your no doubt tricked out whip, with all its bells and whistles since you a pimp, maybe you can go back in time 10 years and help a brother upgrade his equipment
I love how EVERYTHING he plays is composed beautifully to be complimentative to the music, not just to make himself look good... Which as any drummer knows, he is. Being humble and dedicated to his craft is just another reason he's such an amazing drummer.
@Aweattack It's not the fact that this is the "best solo in the world", because Danny does much more. It's the fact that this song is a classic Tool song and fans love how the dynamic level builds up into this solo BECAUSE there aren't necessarily any Tool songs with a mini drum solo like this. And just to see him do it perfect over and over makes it consistent, recognizable, enjoyable, and it JUST...PLAIN....ROCKS
I have just discovered Danny Carey... He just has the most amazing offbeat weird drumming. It is awesome! If Satan was to have a drummer, I am pretty sure it would be Danny Carey... he's got such a twisted drumming style that sounds fantastically technical and like nothing I have heard of
@@Sc0ttPrian a solo is: "a piece or a section of a piece played or sung featuring a single performer, who may be performing completely alone or supported by an accompanying instrument." In this case, Danny Carey is playing the drum solo from the Tool song Forty Six & 2 with guitar and bass accompaniment.
This footage is from Tool's concert in Ottawa 24/08/2002. Danny Carey filmed his whole performance but for some reason this is the only part that was publised on youtube.
I love how it sounds so god damn good, but it still has this rushed, urgent feel to it. Almost like he is being inspired but he can't physically move fast enough to play what he hears. Fucking amazing!
The more you listen to them the more you realize how unique their sound is! Plain & simple - there is nothing that even comes remotely close,, I honestly don't care what genre people want to label it as.
Anyone who has been to a Tool show, back me up! Its the only show where a drum kit gets a enthusiastic cheer and round of applause when its on stage by itself. So freakin cool.
@patriota54 I like their music, thanks to this post i would've never discovered them. although i don't understand the language the music is to my liking! Thanks!
You know, every time I watch a Tool video I just end up liking them more. Notice that no matter where the lighting ends up, he knows exactly what to hit and where it is? If more bands were like Tool, the world would be a better place.....
I sat at John Henry's in Eugene Or. and talked with Danny when he played with pigmy love circus. It was a small venue so it was real personal, and only like 50 people in the crowd. Anyways, he was such a genuinely nice person, and totally humble. It is rare nowadays to find nice musicians, so much ego involved...but Danny is truly a kind human being.
danny is taking drumming one level up. as it has been correctly said, he combines his superhuman technique with a spirituality that so few have done in the past. every beat and every rhythm of his drumming is there, because it has to be. no more, no less. just perfect, flawless, almost mathematic playing. also, if you like, search for a vid with lateralus and the fibonacci sequence, applied to the drums and lyrics. you will be AMAZED of how many things lie under their phenomenal music.
Danny truely puts forth some of the greatest ammounts of effort into his drumming. He takes his drumming spiritually too. Which to me makes him a far better drummer than most. To a person who devotes his time and life into a drum kit truely is the best.
It's quite clear that the video was originally high quality and got lowered by being rewritten to another format or lower quality. An HD clip exists somewhere.
@tsoparGR Very true. He reminds me of Nicko from Iron Maiden. Nick was one of the first drumers that did more than just play a steady beat, he played leads that were just as intricate as the guitars.
Loving all the comments here. I've been a Rock & Roll fan since the late 60s / early 70s. I'm a guitar freak. always have been... always will be. My Dad was a guitarist. STILL, I've been a TOOL fan since the first time I heard Sober (which was tardy to the party!). Mid 90s?? Anyway, Tool is the FIRST band that I've EVER loved in this order: Drums, Maynard (love you, Maynard), Bass, Guitar. And the 'degree' of love I have from one component to the next.. you couldn't fit a blade of grass through.
The fact is that Danny Carey should be thought of as a composer for percussion, not just a drummer. Same goes for the whole band, but I think Danny in particular. That's the great thing about his drum 'solos', that they're an integral part of the music composed not to be showy, but for dramatic effect through the development of ideas. The fact that they f'in rock does help.
His kit is placed perfectly with mathematician, following the "circle theory" mixed with the "golden proportion" mixed with a theory called " the theory of the equator".
exactly, he plays just whats right for the music. He's a team player, the song as a whole is the important thing not his own ego. I've heard so many people say they can play it but I'm damn sure they couldn't write it.
Here are my personal favorites. I'm not saying they're the greatest, they're just my favorites at the moment. In no particular order: Danny Carey (Tool) Tim Alexander (Primus) Martin Lopez (Opeth) Jeff Eber (Dysrhythmia) Tomas Haake (Meshuggah)
Also, he never does anything that subtracts from the sound. Many players are great technical drummers, but terrible musicians. That's why most drummers aren't the songwriters. Carey truly understands music, every single thing he does adds to the song, it's never about his drums, it's always about the song. I've heard people say "the stuff he plays really isn't that hard". And that's because the song doesn't always call for complexity. But simple or complex, he's ALWAYS perfect.
Danny Carey and Mike Portnoy are like the only CURRENT drummers that I strive to be like. They're both so amazingly technical and just generally skilled at the drums. I've tried playing both Tool and Dream Theater songs, and with both, I end up just sitting there listening to the technicality of it all. If anyone can find LIVING drummers better, I'd love to see them. (This does exclude Bonham AND Buddy Rich)
@tiernan1309 This is also why there aren't many recordings of his solos on youtube - or at least where the camera is this close. All other instances where the camera is this close is the same case as this video. Also, don't forget to have garlic, silver bullets, wooden stakes, apparition-capturing thermuses and etc as these videos are often the cause of many mysterious deaths from the result of supernatural means.
I dont hear 7/8 very often and I listen to a lot of music. I would say the ones I hear most from bands other than Tool are 4/4, 5/8, 3/4, and 3/8. Tools probably used anytime signature you can think of. Though the main chorus riff to Lateralus can be counted as 3 measures of 8/8, Tool breaks it down to 9/8, 8/8, and 7/8 because they're cool like that. This solo is in 7/8 which is pretty gutsy and awesome to do.
to me he is the best ever after Bonham, say whatever you want. He has mixed perfectly power, creativity, complexity together with a supreme sense of music. Probably Tool wouldn't have been who they are without Danny and without Tool he probably wouldn't have had the right chance to grow and show all of his talent.
I think it was pretty damned cool of Danny Carey to let someone stand over his shoulder and video record him playing (live) and let someone post it on youtube
Too bad it was recorded on an easy bake oven
Have you ever seen a 2005 camera quality? Iphones didn't even exist back then bro...

It's in HD, the cameras can't handle the savage

At least vic firth put out a good video 🙏💯

Hes a real artist. He puts so much emotion in his play... you can hear this in the music.
When I read "solo" in the title I wasn't expecting it to be referencing the lonely pixel of this video.
