Just followed this tutorial and my shower floor came out beautiful. Thank you so much for the excellent step by step instructions. I followed them to a tee, silicone next then job is complete. 😊
I’m not complaining about your work. Just wanted to ask…. Ok… all tile leaks through the grout. That’s why the shower pan is super critical. So when you tile over tile. You need to make sure the moisture that gets below the tile can flow to the drain and then allow the grout to dry out. Otherwise the grout will stay wet all the time causing mold. Did you make sure to add new weep holes at the new drain. I build custom homes and remodel homes. The number one issue I find is wet shower pains, moldy grout and tile due to poor shower pan drainage. So. Now when water makes its way through your new grout. It hits the new water barrier. It will run towards the low spots which should be your drain. However when it hits the new piece of black pipe installed it cannot get into the drain, there are no weep holes. So the grout will become saturated with water and never fully denoting used regularly.
I've seen many shower pan failiars also. I say most of the cases depend on the home owners. If the clean and seal the tiles regularly they will never have an issue. I clean and maintain mine. It really is amazing to goof proof it. But honestly I didn't bother making weeping holes and bs . It's too much overthinking here for a small tile shower floor that has all the fancy waterproofing stuff under it . When I use this shower every day. I always notice that my grout dosent even get wet let alon having mold in it. If u watch the video again you will see I used that grout additive . It literally made it water repellent 100 percent. You can see the water from in to small balls when it hits the grout here. I do not ever worry about weeping holes or water getting in or under this grout. All the best . Thanks for watching and the comments. I really appreciate you and people like you.
Great job, I know they sell a kit for raising your drain for $6 or $7, but it’s so exact and your drain opening must be exactly 3 3/8” center to center for the screws to align. Your way of cutting PVC outside the screw holes is much simpler and the idea of cutting the new PVC drain is brilliant. 😊 Thank You.
hi a very informative video. When finishing off the corners with silicone, I would suggest first tooling off the silicone with your finger first, then spraying it with water, followed by a spray of soapy water and then another tooling off with your fingers. If you spray the silicone before tooling it off, you prevent the silicone sticking to the tiles on the feather edges of the bead and mould will establish in these areas. cheers

This is an excellent video, possibly the best on this subject (I haven't watched them all...) and I send the link to everybody who asks me about tiling over tile in the shower. Even homeowners who won't do the work need to know how to do it to demand the best result from the installers they hire. Hello! Awesome video exactly what I needed . Question though, I’m using similar stone, shouldn’t they be sealed prior to grouting so a file doesn’t get into stone??? Thanks!!
I have another question at the end of the video you use soapy water and then you silicone around the edge. First does the silicone really adhere good when you do that second will the silicone end up getting moldy after a short time because of the pain to clean after
@thomasdicostanzo417 I applied the selicon and made sure it's applied evenly , you have to make sure that the corners are bone dry when u apply the selicon. I applied soapy water on the selicon that was applied so I can clean it easier with my finger. The bottom of the selicon never meets the soapy water. It's just applied on the top surface so it doesn't get smeared on the tiles when I wipe the excess.
At the end you can see pocket between pebble this is better to use epoxy grout in my opinion because once the sealer will fade then the grout can change color (stain) and if too much humidity then mold could appear.
I know this is a year old video but I figure I'll try. I have the same issue and want to tile over top. Only problem is the drain is a linear type that can't be adjusted up or down. Its a Schluter system so the drain has a flange that is under the schluter. Any ideas how to extend some kind of drain?
You won't be able to unfortunately. I know what exact type of drain you have . This will not work in your case. You have to redo the whole shower base.
Since you raised your drain with the drain extender, wouldn't the water that seeps into the grout pool against the raised drain pipe? Pebble stone tiles require a lot of grout meaning its very porous. Any water that gets below the grout will be find its way down toward the raised drain pipe and not be able to escape. I think you need to use an epoxy based grout which is 100% water resistant. I've never worked with pebble tiles but it sure seems like a lot of grout to fill the spaces. I have no idea how water resistant the sealer is. I figured the sealer was just to prevent stains.
This is one of the best sellers when you pour water on the surface of this tile the water just rolls away it forms a small water balls immediately and goes right in the drain. The type of drain system that you're talking is extremely different from what we have here. This type of drain does not have any weeping holes on the bottom of it.
Thank you for this! Quick question - If the tile type is not that where it is sealed, will water seep through and create a mold issue in between layers?
hi, thanks for watching if ur tile is porcellen you must seal the grout only. its very important to seal the grout so it dosent get dirty and also not allow the water to go bellow the tiles.
Question. My shower walls are concrete block. Should I tile the floor all the way to touching the walls or leave a gap for expansion and fill the gap with silicone ? Thanks great video
Thanks for watching, I honestly have not seen a singel concrete shower wall in my life , concrete is very pours and it absorbs water like a sponge I don't know why or how come u have concrete walls to begin with!
@@renovationschool8818 I live in Florida and all homes here are pretty much concrete block . Yes interior walls have Sheetrock over them . However this shower was built out in the garage and all walls are concrete (heavily painted). Was built in the 1960s and has worked fine that way. Anyway my plan is to completely TILE the inside of the shower walls anyway . Starting with tiling over the floor.
Wow that's very interesting U can differently tile over it but make sure to apply redguard or some type of waterproofing membrane before u tile it because if the water leakes through the tiles or grout lines you don't want to have mold issues.
We have an old and slightly discolored shower pan in place that is still sound. Do you think these techniques would work in my case ? I love the look of the change you made.
If you have a metal or fiberglass shower pan no do not do this on it. But but if it's tiled and your towels are not too shiny then you can do this on it
Thanks for watching It's best to redo your shower base or water finds its way there and you will deal with mold later if you do this job. In my case the slope was perfect.

Thanks for watching 😊
I know this is a year old video but I figure I'll try. I have the same issue and want to tile over top. Only problem is the drain is a linear type that can't be adjusted up or down. Its a Schluter system so the drain has a flange that is under the schluter. Any ideas how to extend some kind of drain?
You won't be able to unfortunately. I know what exact type of drain you have . This will not work in your case. You have to redo the whole shower base.
Great video! Am going to try it! Question: do you have suggestion for painting a shower that is tiled? The walls?
Thanks for watching, I highly suggest not to use any kind of paint on shower tiles.
Tough as tile paint can be used. It's a very good product
@@henryfalgout53 it has lots of fume, it dosen't go on very even.
Job Well Done.
Thanks for watching 🙂
Good vid
If you have no leaks but want to improve the flow of water toward the drain, can you use tile over tile to change the slope?
Depending on the type of tile and drain yes
Depending on the type of tile and drain you can do it for sure as you saw it on this video
Geez, having to knife out all that thinset before grouting seems like such a pain.....but it turned out great!
LOVED the video EXCEPT the very annoying music in the background! It was very informative but really annoying. Good job on the tile
Thanks for watching 😊
I'm sorry about that music 😔

Thank you for this! Quick question - If the tile type is not that where it is sealed, will water seep through and create a mold issue in between layers?
hi, thanks for watching
if ur tile is porcellen you must seal the grout only. its very important to seal the grout so it dosent get dirty and also not allow the water to go bellow the tiles.
Wow that's very interesting
U can differently tile over it but make sure to apply redguard or some type of waterproofing membrane before u tile it because if the water leakes through the tiles or grout lines you don't want to have mold issues.
We have an old and slightly discolored shower pan in place that is still sound. Do you think these techniques would work in my case ? I love the look of the change you made.
If you have a metal or fiberglass shower pan no do not do this on it. But but if it's tiled and your towels are not too shiny then you can do this on it
Awesome job
Thanks for watching 🙂
Great work. How often do you have to apply the sealer for the stones?
Thanks for watching, it depends on the usage
I normally seal them once a year.
Thanks for watching
It depends on the usage
I normally see them once a year
It will depend on the brand of sealer. The directions will provide the details as to how often to reapply the sealer.
Great video! The people did I a bad work in my bathroom floor so I ha ve uneven tiles and I have puddles . Can I tile over tile?
Thanks for watching
It's best to redo your shower base or water finds its way there and you will deal with mold later if you do this job.
In my case the slope was perfect.
Thank you
