  • Was "Roadies" as accurate is it claimed to be?
"Roadies" was a 2016 Showtime series created by Cameron Crowe that was cancelled after one season, but was promoted as a fictional drama that shows an accurate depiction of life for roadies on tour.
To try something different, I sat down and watched the first episode to see how accurate it really was, what (if anything) it got right, and gave my thoughts and experiences on how life on the road really is compared to what was shown in the first episode.

I have worked in arenas for many many years and i have never seen a backstage area as empty as some of these scenes show. There are constantly dozens of both road crews and venue staff everywhere! Thanks for doing videos like this and helping to educate those that aren't in the industry to see what its really like

I didn't even think about that until I was editing this. Yeah, it seemed like a closed off ghost town in a lot of scenes, and normally people are EVERYWHERE. Haha. Good call.

I once saw a small band that probably did the entire booking themself. And during their Tour they booked a venue for 500+ people ish, while other tour stops were in the smallest clubs or even bars. So in the end they had this huge stage for themself with maybe 20 guests and the only staff was one employee of the venue doing entrance and barkeeping... Talking about an empty venue 😅

As someone who is not connected to the music industry in any way, other than buying records and CDs and going to a show/ concert about every 30 years, this was very entertaining for me. Getting a condensed version of the actual show (in which I most likely wouldn't be too interested in by it's own) in combination with the inside knowledge was just the right mixture. And the facial expression when the microphone scene happened was just hilarious.

Two gripes I remember having with this show. 1. - It's ten episodes but you barely see anybody roadie-ing. 2. They work for an arena level band, but you never ONCE hear any of their music. The show Nashville would feature at least one original song every episode. It was feasible to hear at a little of the band's music

Being that it's a TV series, the vast majority of it is going to be drama, and cliche', stereotypes of bands on the road that are long in the past.
However, having a modern take on the show is informative and entertaining.

Thinking about the scene where the opening act is yelling at the tour manager…I was working a one off outdoor show on a local college campus. The SGA brought in a fairly known band for the start of the school year welcome back event. Part of this event was for a campus band to open the show. I think there was some type of contest or they were studying in the music program. An afternoon thunderstorm caused a delay which was made up by shortening the opener from 25 mins to 15 minutes. The girl who fronted the band went ballistic and screamed at everyone in monitor world and including the headliners monitor engineer. Her rant went for about 5 minutes and included a bunch of garbage about her contract and how none of us would be allowed back on the campus. Her band never set foot on the stage.

  • @ReubenAotearoa.

To clarify something you casually mentioned: so on a big tour would the supporting acts bring their own techs? Is there a difference between the main support which often a pretty big band in their own right (eg: Melvins supporting Tool - who blew them out of the water - or Down with the Dio Sabbath tour), less well known bands doing the full tour, or local bands just doing at most 3 or 4 gigs in their town/region? How does that all work: they wait for the headliner to do their thing and do what they can when they do?

    • @TankTheTech
      @TankTheTech  Рік тому +2

There are production schedules that are made in advance that each band will get, including what time they should show up at the venue and what time their soundcheck is. But, what you stated, "wait for the headliner to do their thing and do what they can when they do" is pretty accurate. The headlining band basically gets full reign of control with how they want to set up the stage, and every band works around it. And most bands on tour at a club level or bigger would have their own techs. Sometimes a tour manager would double as a front of house engineer or something like that, but most bands carry as many people as they can, and there is definitely an order to which you usually hire people. Sound engineers are usually the first type of crew a band would start bringing out, as well as Tour Managers and Merchandise Managers.

The artist had specifically requested the metal detector becaused hed been shot at on his bus at a previous show

There is a Roadie story about how someone got an idea to put laser pointers on spotlights to help the spot operators preset before they open the shutter on the light. Well, an artist is on stage during the intro song in the dark before the show starts and gets a bunch of red laser dots start showing up on him. He drops behind the floor monitor and the stage lights come up. After the show some people got a major ear full. No one told him about the lasers and the spotlights belonged to the venue.

Thanks a ton, Tank! A tiny, little dream came true. How often had I asked myself: "What would Tank think of this show". I must admit, I am a fan of Cameron Crowes' work since "Almost famous" and I really like most of the stuff he did. I watched this show two or three times over the past years, just because for me, it is a feelgood show. I know that this show is not a documentary about roadie life, so your remarks are very valuable. But, I watched enough concerts, even followed my favourite band on their whole tour through Germany (Spock's Beard in 2000 in 6 cities), talked much with the band, their roadies and engineers, even got to know the busdriver quite well, so I am aware that this show can't be as accurate as it maybe should be, for the sake of production, drama and plot. It would be quite boring to watch every case unloaded, and later loaded again...
One could argue that this show is very softened regarding the business aspect of touring life. But over the years I realized that the overall motive of Crowe's work is family, a very romantic, a very southern "Blood is thicker than water" point of view. So with Crowe as a director it is quite obvious that you'll get a somewhat romanticized version of this theme, and I am pretty sure that he mixed in some of his own anecdotes from his experiences in the 70ies rock era in this show, things like you mentioned "This won't happen today, anymore".
If Michael Moore would have done this show, that would be a different beast...
Anyway, enough rambling, I personally would really enjoy some more episodes "Roadies by Tank" especially Ep. 03 "The Bryce Newman Letter" and Ep. 08 "The All Night Bus Ride", the first hilarious and funny, the latter a great trip down memory lane (accurate or made-up: doesn't matter, it's pure joy to watch).

This is coming from the band angle more than the roadie angle but it’s very related and relatable and seems like a good place to drop a little kindness to help make the world go around. Coming from the words of a friend who has enjoyed a pretty privileged musical career, one great piece of advice I can give to support bands is be humble and efficient. On the first day, maybe even few days do not be surprised if you get no proper soundcheck. Stay humble, get in there, do your best with the gig, live the experience as if your life depended upon it. Be nice to the road crew - that should be pretty obvious. There may be a rider on the tour for you, there may not be. Stay humble, get in there, do your best and make the most of it. Along the way things will probably open up, a bit of help here, a bit there - consideration for a wedge monitor, a little more space for you on stage, something approaching a rider, getting looked after.. stay humble and be good. Enjoy the experience, be punctual, thoughtful, professional.. in short don’t f**k around acting like the GOAT (unless you can REALLY back that up - Van Halen on the Sabbath tour spring to mind, and they probably still remained somewhat humble in spite of circumstances) and you stand a good chance of being remembered by the headline band with kindness.. and kindness, good words, good deeds get around. Again my mate has enjoyed some G R E A T support gigs owing to such a professional attitude. Good luck!

Good video and insight. I’m glad you didn’t censor yourself this time because that actually bothers me for some reason I can’t explain in some of the videos I watch on UA-cam, including yours. The song says “fuck” and that isn’t censored so why should you be?

I really enjoyed this show. Despite the glamorizing for Hollywood productions it was a fun show with some actual feeling. For the most part, there was good chemistry between characters.
All of my experiences were more grueling and exhausting that the show's stories, so it was nice to see a more positive version. LOL

14:40 yea I think thats in every company. same where I work at. ^^ // 17:10 yea nowadays the backstage area is literally the most boring place of the entire concert. hooking up probably dont happen, but I know some girls who were quite forceful in becoming friends with crew and bandmembers. the hooking up part didnt work out but becoming friends actually did work out they got along with bands and singers, traveled some cities in their tourbus, visited them in the states. or got phonenumbers from others. its easy when you have your charms and look pretty. on the other hand I noticed as a guy from a band thought it was a hook up and he did a move, they acted like he was sexually harassing them. thats why these bands+fan relationships are very dangerous, and I agree that people wont do stuff like that these days. // 27:14 I once saw the bus driver of danko jones in europe sitting at the merch . yea no idea when they sleep maybe he couldnt sleep that day or they had a day off afterwards dunno. I really enjoyed this video as I dont wanna see the entire show in full xD 30min per episodes with your commentary is good enough.

    Hi Tank
I thought it was an entertaining video from your behalf and I think your reaction was more accurate than the TV show. I was a local stage hand for 14yrs and agree with all the things you pointed out that weren't accurate.
I haven't watched the series, so don't know how it pans out but I'm sure there will be more things that the tv show got wrong that you will be able to point out. Debunk the myths of the backstage environment and roadie lifestyle for those who have no idea and believe all of the folklore and hype.

Regarding that hookup intro, I used to own an expedited freight company and I gave a chance to a driver who'd done some jail time after being the driver on a Bare Naked Ladies tour. He evidently got hooked up with a groupie who he was assured was screened and of age, only to find out she wasn't. Smh

I wished I could have been a Groupie.
I always had to work or go to sleep
The only fun Tours I did were with Phish and AC/DC and Ricky Martin.
The others are full of stressed out people that don't like their jobs.
I think a lot of people get the job and it's tough living on a Submarine with 6 or 8 other people.
The only privacy you get is in your bunk or the occasional hotel room.
I became a Trucker because you have your own world living in the Truck.
Which is very peaceful and not to stressful.

I pay zero attention to critic score on Rotten Maters. They’re 100% driven by money/politics. Audience score is all that matters and 86 is a really good score.

Seemed fun, but I can definitely see why it only lasted one season. And no matter what the marketing says, you can never go into something that's not explicitly a documentary expecting it to be an accurate representation. Marketers lie. About everything. It's pointless to ever take a statement like that at face value, there's artistic license in everything. Even band of brothers changed stuff everyone knew about to make the series work better.

I really don't like the attitude towards opening acts. Of course you can't always be on schedule and the headliner is a priority when soundcheck time is very short. But if the headliners are just being assholes the opening act's manager should have every right to be mad. The other bands and their crew are also there to do their job.
It can also be a really bad thing for the opening act if people think they suck because they sound and look bad after being pushed around, not being able to sound check, setup the stage and gear properly etc.

I have to add one thing: I like this show despite the fact that, imho, Luke Wilson is a complete miscast. This guy shold have spent half his life in the touring business? I don't buy it. Way too slick, way too pretty, type mother-in-laws darling. Noah Taylor, the road manager "Dick" in Almost Famous was way more credible...

lets discuss the elephant in the room that no one is saying for political correctness reason. There are rarely any female roadies. at least ones that do actual physical labor. I have seen many women traveling with the bands but they are usually girlfriends/wives or groupies . there may be actual female roadies here and there but they are statistically insignificant.
