I was too nervous to take out my filter sock section (on my 180.5). I ended up just dropping an extra tunze refugium light in each and using it to extend my fuge!
I have seen a several sump videos for salt water aquariums now. And i am amazed how little biological media is added in these sumps. They all rely on Skimmers and mechanical filtration and sometimes a refugium. Everybody claims that cannister filters are nitrate factories But they are usually filled with way more biological filter media thus having a better chance on a full cycle. And even than you should do regular waterchanges. (Perhaps with longer intervals.) With all the spare space in these sumps i would definitely feel like adding way more biological media. Eheim substrate pro, seachem matrix or any other sintered glass/ pumice stone media. Now its just a lot of unused space that costs a lot of money only not to have equipment in the tank. Eventhough still there are always powerheads/wavemakers and an overflow box. So without visible technique is impossible. So why wouldnt an internal skimmer and a big cannister filter like the Oase Biomaster 850 cant do the same ? Saves a lot of money i think. Am i missing something ?
I look forward to seeing how you modified your sump. I have the same tank and used the Klir Di4 filter roller and converted the Ato into a fuge. I have details on my build thread but if I post a link UA-cam will delete my comment. If you want to see it let me know. Good video I enjoyed it.
Good info, thanks... wondering if you could have found a more compact roller filter that would fit in the filter sock area, so as not to remove the baffle?
I had been recently thinking of drilling out my WB 25g Mini Peninsula right behind the overflow and adding a sump. But I'm a little too inexperienced so I think I would have to just buy a new WB system..
Alex, what's your thoughts with waterbox if you were to buy now ? Knowing there is no UK support or shops who sell no more ? I'm stuck between getting a 60.2 or a red sea 170 as a upgrade to my 18inch cube for abit of extra water/ tank space but just don't know now
@@ReefDork 👌 and it wouldn't worrie you waterbox is only a distributor in the UK now ? That's my only put off at the moment. I prefer the waterbox to the red sea if I'm honest
I get lazy with swapping them out so they just clog and become a trap for all sorts of rubbish. They're also awkward to clean properly and I don't like putting them in my washing machine. Plus they're most effective when you swap them out 2+ times a week which is too much hassle
That pipework is horrendous. The valve will stiffen over time and you'll require so much energy to turn it that you'll break the pipe work, probably at the base of the tank thus needing a complete strip down. This is solved by putting 1 or more pipe clips so that the pipe NEVER moves when you're turning the valve. Very basic stuff.
Here are the modifications I've made to my Waterbox sump - ua-cam.com/video/EoyhnQ-W_no/v-deo.html
Completely agree with you on the filter socks, manufacturers need to move with the times 🤦♂️

I am looking at getting a Waterbox 130.4 so this is very helpful, thank you!

There's one that goes in a filter sock holder but I think it has very low flow capacity. I personally wanted the extra sump space too 🙂

Hi, how come there was quite a bit of debris/ detritus in the return pump section?
It's from the live rock I added before I had the Clarisea - I just haven't given it a good clean yet.

Not much to choose between the two - I'd be happy buying either

I wish they still sold the frag 55.2
Does the roller sock smell at all?
Nope! I've only had this a month or so but I've had an X Filter for around two years and it doesn't smell at all 🙂
hey paul
Bearing in mind one of these are made in china, £4£ which is better, red sea or waterbox?
I think Red Sea are better build quality with a better sump layout. But the Waterbox plumbing is much much better.
@@ReefDork Cheers. Better stand, tank or both?

@@ReefDork Agree on the plumbing for waterbox. Valves are much cleaner and the manifold as standard on the larger tanks is really nice.
Why don’t you like filter socks?

Not your best vid, but love the others
Fair enough. I think there was enough food for thought there myself.
Can't be producing Oscar fodder every week lol
Not a dig at your comment btw
