I've been thinking about getting a saltwater aquarium for a decade. Now that I have two little kids, I'm closer than ever to getting one for entertainment and education purposes. Quite frankly, this is one of the most helpful manufacturer videos I've ever seen. Usually manufacture videos are simple advertisements for their product and not educational. Thank you for that.
The water level in the chamber holding the return pump is first to be affected by the evaporation. You want your ATO there. For example, if you block the intake with your hand while the pump is still running, you'll see the pump chamber's water level quickly decline before the rest of the chambers since it's now just expelling whatever water is left back there. You have to see the layout of the chambers in the back to understand how the water flow works. - Adding a heater in the return chamber next to the pump is risky. If the water level would ever get low enough to expose most or all of heater to open air it could overheat and nuke your tank. You would have to not top off the water for DAYS for that to happen though.
Only the water in the saltwater evaporates, the salt stays in the aquarium. Left untouched, or replaced with salt water this will increase salinity. RODI water is just replacing the evaporated water.
@@bentonbaker oh yeah I know, but I as they was doing it manually, how do they know where to fill up to without an auto top to show where the water level should be? I know the auto top offs have a sensor or float to initiate refilling RODI But isn’t there risky of lowering the salinity if manually filling too much RODI?
@@darkphoenx3930ah, gotcha! with the water volume in the tank vs the water's height in the return pump chamber, even eyeballing it won't make that big of a salinity swing. We're talking about the ten thousandths or hundred thousandths decimal place. Insignificant if you ask me.
@@bentonbaker thanks! That’s a relief to know, I have just got my first 20gallon tank and I’m weighing up what is priority for start up. I don’t feel so weary of manual top up to start with now :)
@@darkphoenx3930 ATOs make life so much easier though, especially if you have to leave for a couple days. Although it's not necessary it's the first thing I would get after the essentials!
What is the correct order of the filter material in the central chamber? I have seen in another video that you first put the charcoal under the sponge and in this video you put the charcoal on top. Can you tell me which is the correct order? Thank you!
Don’t buy from these ppl. Terrible customer service. We received a tank a month ago. Had it set up for two weeks and heard the tank crack and watched the crack grow from the outside of the tank called customer service wrote in a claim and they told us it was just a scratch and they weren’t replacing the tank now we are out $1300 with a month old tank that we can’t use. Terrible terrible business. Stay away
This is helpful, it reminds me how much maintenance there is with a saltwater aquarium and now sensitive the creatures are to water quality.
Love the way you repeat the acclimation process for everything
Easy and straightforward! Loved this video!

This video was well made! Not going to lie!
Thank you!
this is gold! thanks Jess!
Thanks for the kind words and tuning in!
Such great dimensions on this aquarium.
Awesome explanation Jess. Ty
Thanks for tuning in!
Absolutely Amazing Video. Wish they had this when I first started the hobby. But is this actually a Waterbox 20???
VERY HELPFUL, NICE VIDEO
Great information. Thanks!
Our pleasure!
I’m buyin’ this next year.
Hi, looking forward to buy it next week, i have a question: will the Tunze Doc 9001 Nano skimmer fit in the back chamber? Thank you very much!
Only video regarding coral additions that have not given instruction regarding coral dipping.
why only add water to the return chamber? does that water level always stay constant? so a heater would go there as well?

why would the bio balls not be used in a reef aquarium?
That Jolly heater can keep that tank warm?
We don't need to much heat here in florida
No skimmer?
Hi! don't need an additional skimmer?
Not necessary, but is ideal
I’m confused at the “return pump” evaporation. Is this an “auto top off” and if so, when refilling with RODI water, won’t this affect salinity levels?

Nitrate can also be broken down/used by… drumroll… plants ;)

She's not very interactive with her subscribers 😂
Thick medium and fine sponges, then charcoal, then biological media then buffer
Why not use the plastic bio media?
Because there is more filtration in the rock and sand opposed to smooth plastic.
Typically those are used for Freshwater
why cant bio media be used in a reef setup
We recommend it for freshwater, as with Saltwater we recommend live sand and rock
I wish you had them in stock 😞
Soon!
20 watt heater ?????? You may want to delete that you need a 100 watt heater for that volume!!!!! Jess says it around :35
Dont use those Sicce heaters. They dont have auto shut off. Will burn your fish alive
I don’t see a protein skimmer. I thought this was the heart of any salt water aquarium. And 4 times the dripping advise is a little bit excessive.
It’s a simple setup or low tech. If you don’t have a PS, you just need to do more water changes.
But enjoyable
Thanks for tuning in:)
Word of warning, the return pumps they provide are awful cheap and extremely loud

Lol so mach time you need 4a reef tank
the tank is too expensive
