    I'm always happy to hear others extolling the virtues of Brandon Routh's ability to play Christopher Reeve's version of Superman/Clark. He clearly studied hard to get both characters as close to what we all expected as he could. Such a shame the rest of the movie doesn't do his performance justice.

      But mimicing Reeves is quite enough if a better alternative isn't found.
      Cavill's Superman comes off as arrogant, slumsy, and reckless, even if the actor himself seems like a nice guy.
      Routh has the charm, the classical elegance, and the messianic purity of Reeves's Superman, even if he was just trained to mimic it.
      Honestly the Routh route would be far better than the horseshit that BvS & Justice League showed us.
      If hollywood can't find a new classical gentleman with muscles, Routh is perfectly fine.
      I like the texture, materials, and the color of the Routh suite, and the better logo, but it should lose the underwear, the excessive use of the logos, and gain a tiny bit of microdetail ideas from the Cavill suit.
      I haven't seen any Arrowverse 2019/2020 season episodes yet, but the quasi Kingdom Come Superman still looks better than Man of Steel.
      That makes two Routh Superman variants be better than a Cavill one thanks to DCEU overall production design incompetence.

    • @TheDawnofVanlife
      @TheDawnofVanlife 5 років тому +25

      @@rudolphantler6309 I concur. But I think the failure of Man of Steel is less Cavil and more bad writing and bad direction. They wanted to do a Superman movie in the mood of a Batman movie. And there's a reason people who love Superman love him over Batman and people who love Batman love him over Superman. Humans are different and instead of embracing the differences of the two types of fans, it tried to capture the audience of Dark Knight with "Man of Steel" instead of just making a good Superman movie.

      Olufolarin Oduntan it was the writings fault. The closest cavil ever got to play the Superman he even wanted was in justice league... he even said it in an interview he doesn’t feel happy with how they have made Superman. At least Superman returns captures the character and embraces it instead of trying to make him batman which is clearly what Warner brothers were going for. It makes Brandon a much better Superman because of the writting. What’s funny though is cavil auditioned for Superman reruns but was turned down because they wanted to make this movie apart of Christopher reeves films. And they needed a actor that looked like him, It’s Superman 5 but technically Superman 3 because it ignores Superman 4 and 5. It’s a big homage and a beautiful made movie in my eyes. S

    This movie still has the BEST Superman save ever: the plane scene. Chills to this day. It got a lot about Superman right in a number of ways. The inherent goodness and nigh infallibility of his being. He felt like a savior. The dead beat dad subplot really messed things up, as well as a bevy of other issues, but I loved the aesthetic of the world, as well as the suit. Everything felt Rockwellian in a way, which fits Supes so well.

    One thing I never hear people mention when discussing this movie is how ugly it is. It’s one of the first movies to ever be shot digitally, on the Thompson Viper Filmstream camera (David Fincher’s ZODIAC was shot on the same system). This was before RED Cinema cameras, and you can tell - everything is muddy and tan and lacks vibrancy. Fincher managed to make ZODIAC look nominally better than SUPERMAN RETURNS, but there’s a reason this camera system didn’t stick around. It’s hideous to look at this 1080p-mastered brown mess of a movie.

    I still like this movie. It's Superman with no need for dark edges which was becoming all the rage at the time. The airplane sequence is great, his flight with Lois does all the nostalgia you can handle and they have good chemistry. And the Superman/Lex confrontation on the island is perfect. Superman, weakened by Kryptonite, being dragged by his face by Luthor's henchmen, and he's screaming "I'M STILL SUPERMAN! I'M STILL SUPERMAN!" It's good stuff. I think the plot with the child, and with Richard being a decent guy and not the usual "why is she with this creep?!" guy was an odd choice that needed a sequel to suss out, and I think that hurt this as it ended up needing to stand alone without anything to follow it.
    Compared to Man of Steel (high bar being set here), it was a loving, faithful adaptation and it wasn't 2 hours of Supes leveling Metropolis without a care in the world and then turning into a murderer before the credits rolled. I'd say in hindsight (with the DCEU), the film ends up looking better, not worse. Problematic, needing some tightening of pace, but a good flick.

    Part of the reason I love "Man of Steel" so much is because "Superman Returns," which was the direct predecessor, time-wise, to "Man of Steel," lowered my expectations of ever seeing a great Superman flick ever again in my life, to such a depressing degree, that when I walked in to see a different Superman origin story, in 2012, I fully expected that I was wasting my money.
    Instead, I loved it! And I feel I have to thank Brandon Routh, and "Superman Returns," for lowering my expectations enough that I was able to actually enjoy "Man of Steel" as a far superior version of the Superman I was force-fed as a child growing up in the 80's. Not that those first two Donner Superman films were terrible. They certainly were not. But they are also, inextricably, stuck in their time. They are so terribly dated that it was past time we got a more "modern" Superman. Now we have that.
    For all the crap thrown at DCEU nowadays, we at least got a better Superman. And I can't wait until the inevitable next Superman film finally comes out! Because it will. And Superman, for as strong as he is, always brings the strongest villains to the table. And that's what the DCEU really needs. The BEST evil, for the best good to battle against.
