I'm terrified these are going to go from "unknown" to "underrated" to "overvalued" within the next few years, since that's the trajectory of every other underrated car.
They already are over valued. You can't find one in decent running condition and good cosmetically for under $8500-$10000 at least the 2.5 Gen anyways. Why is it that when I like a certain vehicle or anything really everyone else has to like the same thing. Trying to get your hands on one is almost impossible when everyone keeps buying them up. They are not special anymore because everyone is driving these things around and certainly not worth 9000 - 10000 with 250000+ Miles on them.
I don’t care what anybody says I loved this generation Montero, and from everything I’ve read online they’re super reliable on past 200,000 miles. If I made more money I’d get this as a secondary vehicle to use when the weather is inclement or on trips especially. Your video really shows the off-road capabilities this thing has also!
Nice video! Great buy, mate, you won't regret it. I've bought the exact same car, even same colour, 3 years ago with only 80k miles. Beautiful condition. Me and my wife use it to overland here in New Zealand. Upgraded the suspension with 2inch OME, and changed to Maxxis AT tyres. Added a roof platform and rooftop tent, house battery in the back, and fridge (removed 3rd row seats). It takes us everywhere, with such a nice ride. Good luck with your build - please share a link if you're recording your progress. Have fun!!
I had one. I’m looking forward to buying another. For those curious, they’re incredibly well built. I lost mine to an unfortunate roll over. Once over and back on the wheels, of course totaled, but the structure of the cabin was so sound that if it weren’t for a flat tire i could have driven it home. The doors all opened after the roll as well.
Glad to see u like the Montero. Welcome to the three diamond world. Would love to see u get together with other WA Montero guys to show the different gens and overall capabilities of the platform.
Monteros are the only vehicle I've used personally for the last 30 plus years. I've owned at least one of all three generations that came into the U.S. . My current truck is a 2003 Limited. These are amazing vehicles and far more capable than most stock off roaders. But it's how durable they are that really sold me on the brand. Just do the regular stuff, timing belts, oil changes, etc. and you'll love it!
I have owned 7 Pajeros. Now I have mk3 with the 3.2 liter Diesel engine. I have driven millions of kilometers on rough roads all over East Africa. Extremely good cars especially the mk2 version.
My wife is Colombian and loves a good 4x4 and is accustomed to them. We've come across some online for sale with nothing but Grand Parent miles on them. Only thing is getting parts and mechanical repairs at shops that are familiar with working on them

Have a 3.2lt diesel Generation 4 in Australia the same just updated, goes like a rally car. Robust and reliable for sure, mine is 2012. Since I bought it the last 3 services (once a year) was $350 each. Hey, and this is Australia ..... the roads are crap...even in the city.
Sweet ride. The 2nd gen Montero SR comes with a factory air locker, and all gen 2s fit 33x11 MT tires stock. That rear suspension is super nice though, I can't think of anything else that is IRS and has a real low range and room for overlanding. Sorry VW the Touarge is too small, and the low range isn't very much of a gear change.
Just came across this video on the Mitsubishi... Here in Australia we had the 1st,2nd and 3rd Gen... Still heaps of all Gens on the road today... Though the first gen are getting harder to find. They are a fantastic vehicle, over engineering made for a strong off road vehicle, just look at Dakar. Great see you modifying one. 👍🚙🇦🇺

@William Perri from my experience I have very little wrong happen with the engine itself. Some weird probably one off stuff. It was from the Mid-west so a lot salt. I had the alignment pin shear off the timing gear. So the engine ran but the belts stopped spinning. Then I had the crank sensor break apart while driving. Other than that nothing notable. Most everything I have read says the same thing keep up on your maintenance and it will go forever. Mitsubishi used the same motor in most of their vehicles. The 3.5 in the sport is the same one in the Montero. It is an interference engine so make sure the timing belt is new or change it if you buy one and have no record of it being changed. I am closing in on 300k miles and it goes. The transmission is pretty solid I haven't had any problems with it at all. Shifts strong every time. The only thing I would say negativity about owning any Mitsubishi is the lack of aftermarket support. Ironman 4x4 is the only US based dealer of lift kits, other than that you are stuck with ordering from Australia. You aren't going to pick something out at your local 4x4 shop for armor or bumpers either. Everything thing is either custom made or order from overseas.
I own a 99 Montero SR. When I first bought it in 2010. The salesman was telling me something about the great history of this thing but I was not paying attention. Two years later, because of my lack of knowledge of maintenance in this thing,I had electrical problems (it really needs an OEM alternator) Mitsubishi or denso. I let it sit for 8 years. during the pandemic. I decided to get it running again just so could sell it for about 1000 dollars. But after much research and discovery of the MMUSA group I realized how valuable and rare mine was and relearned the history of my 99. Any way it has been over a year and over 10,0000 miles since I got mine running again. And I can't tell you how good this thing sounds and rides even after sitting for so long. I did have to clean out the gas tank and replace the fuel pump

It's called a Shogun in the UK 👍👍👍. I love my 2005 3.2did it really is an awesome piece of kit for the price. I had a MK2 2.8 before this and it had a front locker so was a little better off road but as I use my truck as a daily driver it's 80% of the time on tarmac and it's better than the MK2 there by quite a margin. Mine has an OME 2"lift and more aggressive tyres and that's it 👍👍👍 love it.
Yeah, I’ve had my eye on them for years and passed on some I probably shouldn’t have, mostly due to aftermarket support. Ha ha, so now I have two Nissan Xterra’s, an 08 Off Road and an 014 S, and not much aftermarket support with them either, but they’ve been🤔pretty much bulletproof. The 08 Off Road has 183k on the clock. The 014 has only 47K and no issues with either so far in 7 + years of ownership.
There are still a few of all the Montero examples running around the US. . The old square body ones tend to really hold up well for work rigs, you see them around in the deserts and mountains where things don't rust away very quickly.
I believe they might have in other countries. Up until 2002 they had limited slip in the rear. 03 and newer No Limited slip but a great traction control system which seems to work even better.
I sold it to build the S10. I loved mine. After 02 they don’t have limited slip rear ends but have traction control. That is the biggest difference in performance. The newer ones have better looking body panels too.
Thanks, you should get one. It was a great truck. I unfortunately sold it to build the S10 rock lander I have been building the last 6 months. Wish I could keep all the project, but funds and space are limited.
The 3.8 v6 is a better option. The 3.2 did is ok until that electro mechanical diesel pump fails. That is an expensive rebuild, because not many people can do it.
the Montero/Pajero/Shogun whatever you call her she has a Pedigree of a champion the queen of Dakar and the records and Guinness to back it up. Under rated in America cause Americans don't know anything beyond their jeeps.
Great rig Kelly.nearly same powertrain/runninggear that I have in my 99 L400 minus the solid rear axle. I’d totally bring it back to the states if I was to stay another year over here in Okinawa.
Because of this video i bought one. Beefed it up with some big ass tires and accessories. It now looks like the batman tank rolling down the street 🤘🏽

The xterra was the other one I was looking into getting. The montero just had more features I was looking for.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 and it “appears” you found a “mo” plusher one to turn into a very nice Overlander. 😉
Come to Nepal.. U'll see each gen still on the road..
There are still a few of all the Montero examples running around the US. . The old square body ones tend to really hold up well for work rigs, you see them around in the deserts and mountains where things don't rust away very quickly.
How many miles did it have on it when purchased?
What happened with this Montero? Do you have any update on it?
I unfortunately sold it to fund the S10 build I am currently working on.
I have a 2003 Mitsubishi Montero Ltd. Her name is Esmeralda, and she is a badass.
In had a nissan Murano and it was a BEAST in the snow. Would have loved trying the deep stuff in it lol.
There is something to be said for modern traction control for sure. 🤟🏻
Do any models of the 3rd gen come factory with front or rear diff lockers?
I believe they might have in other countries. Up until 2002 they had limited slip in the rear. 03 and newer No Limited slip but a great traction control system which seems to work even better.
Woohooo I own a 3rd gen... It's a hidden sleeper.
I am thinking to buy one and as I am doing my research, 2001-2002 are one of the worst years to purchase. Do you still have your car.
I sold it to build the S10. I loved mine. After 02 they don’t have limited slip rear ends but have traction control. That is the biggest difference in performance. The newer ones have better looking body panels too.
Nothing wrong with the 2001. I love mine
After watching it I decided to buy one:) I am wondering how many miles on your 2001 Montero?
Nice🤟🏻 mine has 210k on it.
Love it! What happened to this build? I kinda want one!
Thanks, you should get one. It was a great truck. I unfortunately sold it to build the S10 rock lander I have been building the last 6 months. Wish I could keep all the project, but funds and space are limited.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 the s10 build is fire! Keep it up!
Thanks 👍🏻
The 3.8 v6 is a better option. The 3.2 did is ok until that electro mechanical diesel pump fails. That is an expensive rebuild, because not many people can do it.
I wonder if its cheap to own and easy to work on?
OMG it’s Nate from DIRTY BEARD BUILDS, isn’t that right?
You mean Dirt lifestyle… 😂
Well, I'm just super excited 😏
Me too👊🏻
1997 Montero sr are also very underated.. as the 97 endeavor
I’m thinking about picking one up
the Montero/Pajero/Shogun whatever you call her she has a Pedigree of a champion the queen of Dakar and the records and Guinness to back it up. Under rated in America cause Americans don't know anything beyond their jeeps.
Haha, yup very true
Looking at a 2001 right now, anything to watch out for? I'm not a mechanic.
This is going to be too cool!
Love the montero
What do you guys think of a Jeep Commander as an overland build
Going to be sick
Hell yea🤟🏻
Looks like Oregon🎉❤
My father still has his 2005 limited. Only owner. Approaching 200k miles
What year xls had the 4.90?
And how is is the swap?
Not sure the years, but once I get the lift and 33’s, sliders, bumpers, winch ect… it will be on my list to do.
I can't decide between the montero or the grand vitara
Montero all the way 🤟🏻
In the UK its known as a Shogun!
🎉 i have a 2005 and lifted, even with highway tires at 45psi will still crawl almost anything ❤ #locker
Is this good as a daily driver?
Yes, very comfortable on and off road.
@@MuddyBeards4X4 you think they would last till 300k miles? Thinking of getting one today.. I found a 2003 20th year edition
Great rig Kelly.nearly same powertrain/runninggear that I have in my 99 L400 minus the solid rear axle. I’d totally bring it back to the states if I was to stay another year over here in Okinawa.
Nice, all great platforms
I love this channel
Thanks
Got a 06 6 years ago.
Montero😍
Hey build a bumper like the rock army bumper it will look sweet
I am more of rock crawler, tube bumper kinda guy. I will have to build a solid winch mount and build a tube bumper around it.
Me too, wanna build one for an Xterra? LOL
@@MuddyBeards4X4 cool bro patiently waiting till you drop the next video
I loved my montero until i couldnt figure out how to fix the problems it had.
Welcome to the Pajero family. If you need any tips on this car just ask.
Thanks👊🏻
I want to buy this. 2015 version though. I'll be needing tips from you

Sure what would you like to learn.
Better to avoid the DPF model.
Where you interested in the diesel or petrol.
@@olamabambi4193 This generation is the monocoque/unibody Pajero right?
Compare it to a Trooper. Both are built tough and underrated.
