    I was about to buy a Subaru Forester when the mechanic pulled up with a 2001 montero limited. I went for a test ride and I was instantly hooked. Comfortable, big windows, just my all time favorite ride. I’m at 187000 miles and counting. I’ve put some money into it including the inevitable timing belt/water pump, all new suspension parts, tie rods, spark plugs, ignition coils etc but I never once regret it. I’m always happy when I pull away from the curb. I’ve driven cross country many times and what a pleasure! I hope to have my baby for a long time!

    One of the most genuinely capable off-roaders ever made, with interiors way more luxurious than any competitor they were positioned against. Massive 9.5" differentials and super reliable drivelines. I have now had 4 (Gen 1, Gen 2 and 2x Gen 4s) and managed to buy one of the last true Pajero Exceeds to ever be sold new in 2021. The models with IFS and IRS are actually better off-road than the ones before it. It makes it incredibly capable up deeply rutted tracks because the diff is tucked up so high. I've walked it up tracks with just 33s and a lift kit following Nissan Patrols on 35s and put it in places you'd never believe. Not once have they ever had any serious mechanical problems whatsoever. You're gonna love it!

      4xoverland doesn't agree and his experience is quite big.

    • @karlfriedrich7758
      @karlfriedrich7758 2 роки тому +20

      @@perpelle 4xoverland is an extremely biased individual. He makes the most loaded reviews I've ever seen and he has a specific distaste for Mitsubishi. That review on the Pajero was the most dramatic nonsense I have ever seen from a reviewer. I'll address his points as a person has owned nearly every generation of Pajero over 10 years, had Land Rover Defenders in our family in Africa and elsewhere for 30 years as well as several other 4WDs such as Nissans and Isuzus. I've seen the places owners have put them in, including knowing friends and users who have taken their Pajeros on expedition through Africa, hardcore trips through Australia and who rally them professionally:
      "I smashed the sump when I rammed the car into the bottom of a dune. That car has less clearance than I thought and that sump guard is incredibly weak"
      This is absolutely asinine for someone with his supposed 'experience'...I mean really... He self-admitted to ramming into the dune harder than any other car that trip. The Pajero had no suspension lift whatsoever. The factory guards (including the sump guard) on pretty much ANY 4x4 from the factory are weak. That's why there is an aftermarket for these components. I have a mix of 8mm alloy and 4mm steel guards covering all the major components and have literally slammed the whole car onto a boulder under the fuel tank, run over a truck's steel fender that flew off in front of me, and hit the sump and aftermarket transmission guards countless times on rocks and stumps with absolutely no damage other than small dents in the guards. He's comparing a 1.5mm pressed steel factory rock deflector against the aftermarket standard 4mm guards..... Do Land Cruisers and Defenders come with 4mm guards from the factory or do they come with flimsy stock guards? Amateur rally competitors fit commonly available 3" rally suspension lifts from ORAM, larger tyres and bash plates and jump them >1m off the ground with no issues. So yes, maybe slamming your stock vehicle into the bottom of a dune at high speed isn't the best idea without modifying it first...
      "The back middle seat is so uncomfortable"
      Barely anyone uses it, the middle seat in most cars including his gift-from-God Land Cruisers are only intended to fit a 5th person for a short time and aren't meant to be as comfortable as the two main side seats. I can tell you from experience that a Defender seat, regardless of whichever seat you pick is uncomfortable. It feels like a plank. The driving position is terrible and you're constantly hitting your elbow on the door when turning the steering wheel while the handbrake is under your leg the whole time, yet he absolutely loves Defenders and glosses over any of that doesn't he. Many Landcruiser 79 owners change their front seats out as one of the things they do.
      "The rear bumper kept scooping sand."
      Yes, that's a known weakness. The solution? Fit a towbar (it takes up the gap between the body and the bumper and doesn't affect the clearance). I've had that on both my Gen 4s in sand and deep mud and never experienced that. Or even better there are also bash plates available aftermarket to solve that very issue for

    Time to change the radiator, it's got that telltale brown color of the aging plastic. I swapped mine when I did the timing belt job, but the aging plastic is starting to get brittle now, so don't ignore it. I too think the Montero's are overlooked and are great trucks. Soon, when others figure that out, they will start to climb in price like some of the others have already done.

    I absolutely love my 3rd gen Montero! I got mine for 3500 in mint condition with 135k miles on it, zero leaks and zero issues. All I’ve done to it is add some proper off-road tires and there isn’t anything it can’t handle. It comes with a Locking center diff and limited slip differentials front and rear. Ive even had to tow my friends Tacoma that was all tricked out, it couldn’t keep up with my 20 year old stock rig. I pulled the 3rd row seat out and there’s room for a full size jack, my camping gear and an air compressor with room to spare and it’s all tucked away out of sight. I would say it’s probably one of the most underrated 4x4 platforms out there.

    A few tips-You can also completely remove the third row seat without tools and use that space for more storage. You can remove the factory 6 disc CD changer and move the climate controls to the location of the CD player and this allows the installation of a more modern double din infotainment system in the place of the (still excellent) factory single din Infinity stereo. Big game changer for making this awesome rig more modern. Keep up on keeping the cooling system on point. Run a can of Seafoam through the gas tank 4 or 5 times a year. Bilstein 4600's are perfect for these. If the sunroof stops working, its not the motor failing, there are 3 bolts that hold the motor to the roof, they are notorious for falling out, just reinstall and loctite them and then look up the calibration procedure which is easy and youre set. For the front seats and the crappy leather, Amazon has a bottom cushion cover that is somewhat close to the original color, a little lighter, but definitely doable. The paint in this color (Viking White Pearl/ Sudan Beige) will hold up really well, clay bar, buff and polish, then ceramic coat it and you'll be amazed at how it pops, especially the pearl at night.Other than these things, they are very durable and wont leave you stranded. I have a Gen 2 as well, with 210k on it and its not running right now. Both are great rides.

    Love these vehicles, so versatile. We've been using them (called Shogun here in the UK) for work and family for years, had 8 of them. All of them have towed on a daily basis and we tend to run them up to about 300,000 miles without major problems. Rust is the big killer of these. So long as you service them properly, keep the fluids fresh (esp A/T fluid) they will go on forever. We have the diesel ones here which suit a life of hard work. Super Select 4WD is brilliant, they are far better off road than they should be with such limited front wheel travel. The short wheelbase versions even better with a much better departure angle.

    Man I love these things. Even preferred it over the Landcruiser Prado which it competed against. In India where I'm from it came with a 3.2 litre 5 cylinder diesel which put out roughly 200hp but a lot more torque and for the broken roads here it was perfect. You wouldn't even feel the bumps, the suspension just soaked it all up, no need to slow down at all and it drove way better than the Prado(Lexus GX in the US) being fully independent all round. Its pretty popular in the middle East too and reliable as well. Mitsubishi really dropped the ball unceremoniously killing off all their hallowed brands like the Lancer Evo, the Pajero/Montero, Eclipse, Galant etc. As Nathan says, 12 time Dakar winner, the Evo rally cars were also killing it in the Asia Pacific Rally championship well into the 2010s too. All that pedigree simply squandered off by the shitty management deciding to focus on shitty small cars. And how did that work out for them?? Look where they are now. The company is just a shadow of its former self and was barely hanging on by a thread when it was finally bought by the Renault-Nissan alliance. But they're also having their fair share of problems now too so Mitsubishi is just hanging in limbo while all this crap sorts itself out. At least their commercial truck business is doing decent owing to their popularity in Asia. 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

    Great job on the video Nathan. I owned the 2002 Montero for 6 years and loved it too. Compared to many SUVs of today it was better at many things, size, luxury, off over land driving. I really believe that vehicle would still sell well today it updated with more fuel efficient engine (no CVT). It was a great vehicle and I still miss having it today. I must say that it is truly a shame how Mitsubishi has fumbled the ball on so many of their iconic vehicles.

    I would just like the comment on the quality of the audio during what looks like a wind storm. No buffeting or anything, came out great. Also, I think Mitsubishi is all but done in the US. Their current vehicles are ok, but the dealer network is tiny, and there is always this risk of them just pulling out entirely which would leave new buyers high and dry.

    I have an '03 and they are beasts offroad. I gave mine 31.5 inch tires and a 2 inch lift for a little bit of clearance and it is can do just about anything. These trucks are amazing. They can fit 33 inch tires stock and are stout enough to handle that size tire without breaking cv joints. You will end up on 3 wheels a lot when "four wheeling" but the traction control system will always keep you rolling forward and the stiff and balanced chassis makes those wheels lifts relatively drama free.
