  • The Gary Fisher bike that I have been working has V brakes. Both sets of brakes were rubbing on one side. The adjustment is very easy. I made a quick video to show how to repair this.

I'm an avid bike rider, but don't have much experience repairing my bike, and am constantly taking it in to get fixed, because of how much I ride. You, sir, saved me a trip in and probably another $30. Thank you for your efforts!

Thank you. I struggled over a week trying to adjust v brakes on different bikes I'm working on, at a Scottish high school recycling project. Didn't believe your advice would work but fixed a bmx and mountain bike with a wee group of 14 year olds this morning. A proud moment for teamwork and following your simple instructions.

You, sir, have just got yourself a new subscriber. I was washing my bike and giving it some tlc when all the sudden after I put the rear wheel back on, the brakes were about a half inch away from the rim on one side and practically glued to the rim on the other side. I spent about a half hour trying to fix it, but to no avail. Then I just so happen to watch this and PRESTO. My brakes are feeling great now.
Gotta admit, I feel pretty dumb for not knowing such a simple thing. But hey, live and learn. Thanks for the video, keep more coming!

Thanks! 30 seconds in and three minutes taking a look at my bike I was able to fix the problem. For me, I just didn't have my wheel centered. Thanks for starting off with the obvious for those of us that sometimes forget about the small stuff.

  • @wombat5628

All the other videos I watched immediately address how to center the pads, until I saw your video @0:17 when you advise to first release the skewer to make sure the wheel is centered. I did it and, sure enough, the wheel was not centered (after the bike fell on its side today). After I re-tightening the skewer, the brake pads became symmetric and no more rubbing! It's not the brake pads problem and it saved me from unnecessary hassle of dissembling the brake! Thank you!

Thx again RJ here why my bike rim was rubbing..I was at a yard sale and my Giant Mt Bike fell over breaking the rear derailer in half..I didn't realize it and started to ride my bike jamming the chain in the spoke/wheel. I had to pull hard to get the chain out..and I bent the wheel. I had multiple issue..I paid the bike shop to instal a new derailer. 50.00 and my back wheel was catching..I followed your directions which helped alot and then I realized it was only catching around the area of 8 spokes..so I trued the wheel up,,and fixed it..I had begun having break issues when I switched my mt handle bars for cruise bars..the cruise bars saved my wrist but the cable housing was shorter...It's working but I ordered some cable housing and plan to fix that issue as well. I love your videos...very helpful and down to earth..Chuck

Thank You !!! Your fix it video is to the point as the title says, Brakes Rubbing On One Side. Mentioning to check the tire to be centered correctly as the the first step was pro advice. Your instructions about adjusting the screws in 1/2 & 1/4 turns & alternating from 1 side to the other was more pro advice. I watched 5 bad videos before I found RJ The Bike Guy. The other videos went on talking about things that was a waste of time and off the subject. You saved me 10-14 days of wait time from a bike shop and saved me money. RJ The Bike Guy is my go to video channel for bike repair! I will subscribe and ring the bell.

thanks, I've seen some videos make this over complicated. Your example was quick and to the point. It worked to a point on my son's bike. I also oiled the pivots where the springs are, which maybe a factor. Having said all that, I think this brake design is flawed, after all the adjustment, there is always a lazy side that does not pull in properly. Do you agree?

  • @iBeSupicious

Legit took half a second and the back of a knife to fix my bike. Thank you. I was getting ready to rip it apart and reset everything but all I needed was to touch one screw.
Haven't taken it for a ride yet but i've been press press press pressing the brakes to see if they go back to the touching position and they have not.

My back brake was dragging on the left of the wheel like it seemed as if it was spring loaded to and this happened after I adjusted the cable because the brake handle was going all the way in when I tried to stop. Once I followed what you were saying, I could actually see when I adjusted the screw on the side that seemed to pull towards the wheel that it was moving away. It took me a couple of tries but, once I saw both sides of the brake opening and closing evenly after following what you said, it looked like it was working right. Thanks so much for your great tutorial video!

There are three little holes in my case where you can add / remove tension of the spring by actually placing one end of it in them. (hope this makes sense) Thanks for making all these great videos. They are very informative.
