23-Year-Old Co-Pilot Jumps or Falls Before Emergency Landing

- Twenty-three-year-old co-pilot Charles Hew Crooks was found dead after exiting a plane making an emergency landing. He and an unidentified pilot took off about 90 miles from Raleigh, North Carolina, when the plane suddenly lost a wheel. After the dramatic emergency landing, the pilot reportedly told police his co-pilot had jumped or fallen from the plane. Crooks' body was found in a backyard 20 miles from the airport. It's theorized that the co-pilot slipped out of the rear cargo door.

Something serious wrong with this, you just don't jump or fall out of an aircraft at 4000 feet. Nothing was mentioned about that until the plane was on the ground from the second pilot. This really needs to be investigated more.

I'd imagine he was trying to see or thought he could assess the damaged gear, likely causing him to fall out. Given his age, he may have unfortunately overestimated his abilities, and the pilot may not have immediately known that he had fallen out.
That makes sense! Definitely a possibility
This is the first thing that crossed my mind, only way this makes some sense to me
The problem with that theory, is that this particular plane, has a fixed tricycle style gear. And the pilot had reported the right wheel was missing…. Yet still no mention of the missing pilot. I was able to look up the flight path and see their altitude and airspeed. They went from 13,000 ft, to 2,000 ft in just over a minute. If he were performing an emergency decent, that’s understandable. However, and emergency decent is performed in a left hand spiral. They descended straight and level. When they did do a few laps, it was at the same altitude, not changing. There’s something very fishy going on. (Pilot here btw)
I am thinking the same thing.
I would land a plane on its body before ever trying to fix a stuck gear mid flight
He fell. I wish people would stop saying he jumped. He didn’t. The plane was a jump plane with a ramp in the back. He fell out of the opening. RIP.😢

@@TheFrenchPug that the "plausible" answer I can think of. I don't know the ins and outs of aircraft protocol, but if the pilot said stay in your seat, co-pilot disobeyed a direct order. They attempted to land at another airport, had a hard landing and did a go-around (where they basically abort the landing and get back airborne). They damaged the landing gear on right side and decided to divert to Raleigh, likely because it has crash vehicles and longer runway.
This plane has a ramp door on the back. I'm going to put my money on what happened was - he was trying to inspect the landing gear for damage and fell out the back of the plane. Probably trying to look out the back cargo door or a side door and was pulled out of the aircraft. Odd event nevertheless.
I'm assuming he would communicate his reasoning to the pilot before he left the flight deck. Hopefully the pilot will give a statement and clarification soon. Your explanation is logical and presents a realistic possibility thinking from a pilot's perspective.
That or the landing door just opened and to help the already unsteady landing he tried to close it but was pulled out

Nothing suspicious. Checking up on damaged landing gear, on THIS PARTICULAR PLANE, involves lowering the rear ramp in mid air and checking it visually, USUALLY strapping in with a restraining belt, which he didn't, and got sucked out. The other pilot DID SAY on the radio that he lost his other pilot. We can only hope perhaps that the poor guy got knocked out from the start of the fall.
Where did you get the information that the pilot stated on the radio that he lost Crooks ?
This is a very rational and plausible explanation for the missing pilot. It makes perfect sense that he was trying to view the underside of the plane. The only other question remaining for me is why were they trying to extend the landing gear so far from the destination airport in the first place?
@@cindywoodbury385 The landing gear is fixed. It's always down.
@@swerne01 Thank you. This is a very sad ending to the flight.
The pilot probably thought his co-pilot was still trying to fix the gear, not knowing that he had actually fallen out.
To all the "aviation experts" in the comments who probably never left the ground or spent a moment around anything thats not a commercial airliner. Not everything is foul play. Mistakes happen and if the co pilot wasn't in his seat the other pilot was too focused on bringing the plane down. It's a plane used for skydiving they're setup different than the average puddle jumper or jet liner. The Co pilot could have fallen out if for whatever reason they had the door open and he was in the rear of the plane. I doubt at 4000 feet though it was an intentional jump more likely he slipped and either tried to hold on or he fell out at that high. I highly doubt after having one aborted landing pass and on his way to make another landing the pilot got out of his seat got anywhere away from the controls on a damaged plane and threw his Co pilot out. Wait for more information comes out before you start damning a man who just brought a broken plane down safely for everyone else
That’s mob mentality for you
Idk I fly and one of my first thoughts were “wonder if he was pushed/thrown out.”
Depending on if the plane has any form of auto pilot, it wouldn’t have been that hard to do. I fly a plane from the 70s that has fully integrated autopilot. It’s really not hard to imagine, as much as I hope that isn’t the case there’s always doubt.

Right. It just kinda feels weird he didn't notice his co pilot disappear
Agreed. This should warrant an investigation.
@Anime Op in order for the copilot to exit the plane the door would need to open. When you're that high up and open a door in the side of your plane you're going to know it! It would be incredibly noisy, cold and windy. Not something you can accidentally fail to notice, even in an emergency.
What kinda plane was this bcus if it one of those small ass planes yeah I would notice a whole human being missing
Okay I rewatched the vid it's not a small plane but It still feels weird that the guy just goes missing and might have "panicked" and jumped. Any common sense would say take a like 65ish % over 0% survival chance
FAA guy: "I cant imagine any pilot jumping out of their plane"
Trevor Jacobs:
Probably thought he could resolve or observe the landing gear issue from the hatch but lost his grip
Most likely reason.
The drop zone told them the wheel had fallen off. So then why is he farting about at the back looking for something they both know is not there? In addition you can clearly see the gear, or where it was if you stick your head out of the cockpit side window.
And how was he going to resolve it? I have yet to find a plane, any plane that carries a spare tyre or wheel, and if this one did he would need arms 20 feet long to stand a fighting chance of even touching the axel let alone putting a wheel on it into a 140 knot wind
So as you can see there is some unresolved stuff and some impracticalities here...
There is a lot of assuming and guessing going on, but anyone who flies would know he was most likely attempting a visual assessment of the landing gear, which can be dangerous. It is most likely he fell, not jumped.
That thought only occurred to me after watching this video and seeing the door used for parachute jumping. It would also make sense that he and the pilot talked about it before trying it. The initial report we saw didn't mention anything about the wheel - just unknown difficulties led to emergency landing. So by now there really should be no mystery unless the pilot isn't talking.
Why would he check and risk his life when they could have made a low pass so the controlers in the tower can inspect if the wheel is there or not? This is pretty crazy story...
@@The_Touring_Jedi why would he check? Because he thought it a simple task, because he didn't see a risk or a danger, because like so many young people he considered himself bulletproof and the thought of falling out just never occurred to him.
@@ElmerGLue I was not debating that it is/is not suspicious. We should have known from the outset from the pilot himself who oddly said nothing to air traffic control. I mean, he did say there were two on the plane. So that would underline the onset of any suspicion, for me. My comment merely intended to say that I find it easily plausible the young man would be checking the condition of the wheel given how this video represents the plane in question. No insult or challenge meant to you.
It’s the FAA they only make theories on malfunctions and human errors and even both of those have conclusions. It’s the FAA they know what happened they don’t make theories they’re leaving it to the people to do it for a reason
It’s very sad when someone dies shortly after earning that hardwork career.
What makes me the most suspicious is the calmness of the pilot. Even if the plane was fine, if the pilot goes missing from the plane and the pilot notices, he'd definitey radio the tower.
I mean, isin't a pilot's job to stay calm always to handle the situation as gentle as possible?
@codey morganti Calm is one thing. Not even mentioning it is quite another thing. So he either didn't know he lost his pilot before landing or there's a lot more to this story than we're hearing so far.
I doubt the other pilot threw him out or killed him… while he was flying… what’s suspicious? Tragic for sure but it’s not some conspiracy.
It could be suspicious if there was 3 people in the plane but the pilot??? You’re cooked.
I knew you’d get the “it’s a pilot’s job to stay calm” remarks. If I’m suddenly missing my copilot, I’m at least putting some annunciation in my voice while saying “there were two people on board.” Something is not right here.
I have many skydives out of this exact plane. I suspect that they opened the tailgate exit in flight to inspect the missing wheel. But standing on the ramp of this plane is very disorienting as the ramp angle is fairly steep. There's also nothing to actually hold onto as you walk down the ramp. On top of this, unless the pilot in command slowed the plane down significantly, there would be a severe blast of air when sticking your head or torso out to view the wheel.
My condolences to family and friends, never forget that life is short and tomorrow is never guaranteed.
Just want to say... I absolutely loved this comment.
@@denissepadilla809 yes. needed this explaination. I thought the same. so sad
I was looking for this comment, I don't think it was suspicious, just a terrible accident.
Came to leave the same comment, but without the working knowledge of the plan. Very sad if this is what happened.
I doubt the pilot wanted to take a look at the landing gear. What would be the need? Suppose he could see the landing gear, now what? Not to mentioned in cases where the state of the landing gear is unknown, the plane could do a low fly over at the airport so the tower can see if the landing gear looks like is down.
To me, this seems incredibly suspicious
Was the door open? This sounds incredibly weird and suspicious… the pilot did not jump out. That makes no sense as a landing gear issue is not nearly that big of a problem like a loss of engine could potentially be in a remote area (a 16yo pilot on her first ever solo flight landed without a wheel many years back!). The dude would have to have fallen or he pushed…. And to have fallen, the door would have to already be open. Why on earth would the door be open?
Isn’t it obvious to get some air of course

In a separate video, it covers how the pilot DID IN FACT report it to ATC. That was not mentioned in this video for some odd reason.
Yes, I listened to the whole ATC conversation. The pilot DID call ATC and tell them what happened. He circled on scene whilst talking to ATC (the vid even shows his flight path) so they could mark his location to find the body of the person that exited the aircraft. People make wild speculation before knowing the whole truth.
How incredibly awful! Something is not right. I hope they investigate for further details.
nothing to investigate. He went back to check the landing gear and fell out trying to fix it. No pilot's gonna jump out of a airplane that's flying fine because they can land without landing gear. The plane will be trashed, but everyone on board is extremely likely to live.

Very Sad yes but I would venture to say many do not live to get to see their dreams come true even old people.
that is an insult to Crook , when you imply that Crook voluntarily jumped out of the plane , shame on Inside Edition
details I got from somewhere else is that they flew a load of skydivers earlier from a smaller airport...when they came to land they had a hard landing, bounced and executed a go around....then realized they had lost the whole right gear (plane has fixed gear)....then the pilot requested a landing at the larger airport....
There's the missing piece of information we didn't see before. The plane was used for parachute jumping and had a door. So he might have tried to open the door to get a look at the wheel which led to the accidental death. It makes better sense now. This video filled in the details.
@Freelance Philosopher Obviously to confirm whether or not they had lost a wheel. Why would you find that so unlikely?
I suspect that the man who jumped out did just that: *jumped* out, as opposed to falling out. Maybe the pilot was his friend and accepted to haul him so that he could skydive on his own or something. After they realize one of the gears hadn’t dropped, the guy decides that he’ll jump out anyway, and why not, better one soul on board in the event of a fatal crash than two. The plane crash lands and the pilot survives, but unfortunately, the other guy’s parachute fails, something which the pilot couldn’t have known.
I agree with other commenters. I would imagine that he may have been trying to visually inspect the missing wheel and fell out.
Imagine enjoying the nice sun outside when some guy literally drops out of the sky and falls to his death in your own backyard. That is traumatizing, for the parents of him, and the people that lived there.
I’d just yell out OOOHHH that’s gotta hurt!
A while back I lived in SW London under one of the flight paths to Heathrow. Every few years someone would fall out of an undercarriage well as the wheels came down and splat in the neighbourhood. Last one I recall came all the way from Nairobi. He was frozen solid.
I used to live by an airport that does a ton of skydives and like 6 years ago one of them landed on my roof. My buddy and I were hanging out inside and heard the thud, went out and the dude literally said "do you guys have a ladder?"
His leg got scraped up but he was fine. Was pretty surreal and random.

I've read different accounts of this talk the pilot had with "authorities". One account says the pilot stated Crooks "leaped" out of the airplane. Another has it the pilot said Crooks "jumped" out of the airplane. Now your account says the pilot's words were he "jumped or had fallen" Which is it? Who was this "authority" the pilot spoke to, when and where did they speak, and what exactly does the "authority" say the words were? Does the pilot claim he saw Crooks leave the aircraft? This is starting to remind me of the multitude of inaccuracies after the Uvalde tragedy.
Exactly. No one has heard (publicly at least) the recording of exactly what the pilot said to ATC. When ATC called 911 his intent was to inform them that the co- pilot had left the plane while still in the air. He could have easily mis-spoken and used the word "jumped" when he had been told "fallen" or "exited" or "left" etc. I hate stuff like this when the sensational is painted over the "news" story to bait readers. (this also pertains to a huge percentage of postings on UA-cam)
No way he just jumped. NO WAY! Strange the pilot was so unaware. The whole thing is incredible.
Many experts agree for now that the copilot accidentally fell while inspecting the landing gear on the rear ramp that is usually used for skydivers.

No shot your co pilot falls from 4000ft elevation and you don’t make contact with him or notice him missing THE ENTIRE LANDING, suspicious pilot for sure
I couldn’t do this interview if it were my boy, but everyone grieves differently.
Makes the whole story seem fishy.
Praying for his mom and dad
what is that gonna do?
I suspect he was trying to get a closer look at the faulty wheel, then slipped and fell. Heartbreaking!
Mis Condolencias.🙏🏻
How terrible vfor this family to have to go thru this they need a lot of support and comfort😇👍👨⚕️doing what he loved ✈️🛩😭
He was found about 5 miles from my house. There's a video floating around that caught the sound of him falling into the trees before he hit the ground, caught on a security cam.
The pilot just sounds too calm. Why was there no mention of the incident on the radio convo?
Way to calm.
Probably didn't know he was gone, too busy concentrating on landing.
I'd say hecwent to the rear door to see if he could fix the problem, lost his grip and fell.
It doesn’t look like a big plane. I don’t see how the pilot could not know he was gone before landing.
@@LordBrittish if he was flying and operating controls he was quite busy. makes perfect sense.
He was trying to focus on landing without dying as well. Once the adrenaline wore off- that’s when reality sets in.
I seen s skydiving instructor do the same thing. Yes he had s parachute but he had a tandem and injured the person trying to leave the plane from the back over other people and out the door. The pilot simply turn off the malfunctioning alarm turned around and landed the plane without incident.. the jumper has been jumping for decades. People can truly be mental.
I wonder if he opened that door looking to see about the wheel, maybe even thought he could somehow force the wheel down.
The pilot may have thought he was still in the back of the plane while still doing the emergency landing.
Poor guys should have left well enough alone and just went with whatever happens.
Rather suspicious circumstances. The audio the pilot states two onboard!! Time will tell.
That would be the only logical guess that he was trying to get a view of the underside of the plane.
Was just thinking that! He could have been inspecting the wheel and attempted to deploy it and got sucked out the jump door. Horrible tragedy.
Sure, or this was a set-up and the pilot pushed him.
@@christophdollis1955 how tf would he push him if he's flying the damn plane
This just sounds so insane and kind boggling.. His family needs the absolute truth to be known!
My prayers with the family.ay god bless them
that won't help anyone, or get you god points.
Story doesn't mention they tried to land once, hit hard and decided to go around again. After the hard hit, the gear was busted. Still would like to know why the guy fell though later on. Unlikely to be suicide as they attempted one landing and he hadn't tried to suicide by then, same with foul play. Most likely accident.
Yes, they busted the landing gear and then the guy fell out while trying to inspect and repair the wheel. It happens.
Very suspicious. I hope the truth comes out.
He was checking the failed gear and didn't consider safety precautions. Nothing suspicious about it.
@@toupac3195 and doesn't report it till he lands? I mean, the plane isn't that large - he could look over his shoulder and see the back hatch
@@moosesnWoop have you ever heard of a "sterile cockpit" during an emergency? Focus is tunnel vision. Yes, they should have coordinated safety procedures if he was going to check the gear, but adrenaline is a foggy subject.
@@toupac3195 Yes I know, but the way the reporter said it, as though the Pilot didn't mention it. Had to rewatch the video to realise that he did call ATC but the audio was held back, probably for investigation.
And yes, if he the pilot is trying to maintain AS, alt etc. as well as run through the manuals etc. he would be focused on that "trusting" the co-pilot to "check" out if he can see the wheel from the back for eg.
Thoughts and prayers to the Co pilot, that he has a speedy recovery, that's a bad fall
He’s dead mate!!
In the picture of the plane after the landing you can see the back ramp of the plane is at least partially down. The landing gear issue would be too much of a coincidence to not be the catalyst, if they knew they had a gear issue I could believe he was trying to get a look at it from the back and they just hit a little turbulence and out the door he could have gone.
My thoughts exactly
Seems pretty straightforward, why is anybody questioning that?
@@seanarmstrong7767 I've been surprised by that too. Everything I see is a statement that he jumped or fell. There's nothing that would suggest he jumped but they just don't seem to want to make that assertion.
Passive aggressive homicide: spread the word.
@@meritorioustechnate9455 Hmmm, That's intriguing. It sounds like pure speculation but certainly not outside the realm of possibility. I've been wondering why they're still so ambiguous about the whole thing.
No way any pilot ditches a plane, especially near residential areas. He definitely slipped or there was foul play of some sort.
sometimes its the effect of drinking too much coffee.
This incident is very suspicious. What a horrible way to die!
Occams Razor. He checked on the wheel without notifying the other person and accidentally fell to his death. (Accidents do happen and sure enough crazier things have happened) Im sure they both were seasoned enough not to worry about each others actions due to trust, so some silence from the other wouldn't cause suspicions or alarm.
Plot twist ..They were air dropping cocaine to drop zones and lost a fixed wheel
Rest in peace Charlie. Fly high 🙏
Just heard the recordings. The man said he jumped out
He fell. He didn’t jump. He was trying to see if the wheel was down and fell. Horrible loss😢.
he was also a great guy. i had a really small conversation with him in a discord server but i feel honoured to have it
he probably went back over by the back hatch to go check on the right landing gear possibly with no harness on, maybe they hit some turbulence or something and he fell :(
Very strange incident!
BEST OF WISHES TO HIM AND HIS FAMILY!!!
Odd comment to make over a tragic death ☠️
Cant really wish a dead man
I pray the family gets truthful answers to this young man’s death. Sending love & prayers to all 🙏🏽❤️
This is a PSA to take your passion to the next level
The way they make it sound like a conspiracy is just shameful! Most likely he went to view the landing gear and something happened. RIP young man.
The fact that the pilot kept saying "we" as he was talking to ATC tells me he's lying. If a pilot brings a student pilot up to fly for a lesson, there's absolutely no way the student pilot could get up from the copilot seat and walk back to the tail without the pilot noticing. Also since they had no jumpers they would've had ZERO reason to open the tail hatch UNLESS the copilot was being trained how to use it in flight, in which case he would need to be seated upfront and watching what knobs and switches the pilot uses.
This was murder I think.
These poor parents. 🙏
How could parents be this calm
This story really highlights the lack of research and the sensationalist and/or bizarre slant that inside edition likes to put on things. Everyone who has an interest in aviation has been following this story and understands that the most likely scenario is that he went to the back of the plane to look at the condition of the wheel.
That wasn't even mentioned here. And there is just no possibility he deliberately jumped, so they shouldn't have even given that scenario any air time.
Yes, and with that type of plane you have to open it to check the wheel. There's 100% chance that is what happened and yet the video leaves almost 100% of its viewers oblivious to that fact.
Inside Edition is notorious for sensationalizing headlines and leaving out essential/relevant information to the most obvious follow-up questions.
Thank you for explaining this. I know very little about aviation, so your comment really helped me. Shame on this news channel and any others who sensationalize this :(
Sounds like some serious foul play... something does not add up here...
I was a flight engineer on C130s in the military. There is no way that a trained pilot just decided to exit the craft IN FLIGHT because of failed landing gear. Nope. Investigate the other pilot.
Everyone giving props early, we still have p clue what actually happened, a fight? Argument? Something drastic MAY have happened, let's hope that it's a clean story this time though, and I feel for the family and for the person that mysteriously fell from the aircraft
It's pretty clear he was checking on the status of the landing gear and went whoops, if the entire gear is gone, you can lower it and land on 2 wheels, if just the wheel is gone, then it can catapult when the gear digs in, so you have to land on the belly, which damages the aircraft, so he was most likely leaning out the rear cargo hatch to get a view of the gear and figured he didn't need a safety harness for some reason or another.
@@HicSvntDracones Nothing is clear.
So the pilot had already said, they were going to put it down on its belly. And unless the young copilot had experience with the landing gear, you would think he wouldn't have been doing that. And why didn't the pilot mention he was inspecting the gear?. We have all seen enough times in our life, where people were doing things with planes, that they prefer nobody know about. So I will wait until all the info is out.
🙏 prayers for Charlie's family
Wow. The pilot jumped or slipped or fell, and the co-pilot landed the craft? Why the heck would the pilot have jumped?
This is so sad, regardless of how it happened. Those poor people who found Crooks! Praying for them for Crooks' family and friends, and the pilot. Why was the pilot not identified? I wonder if law enforcement is keeping his name out of the media.
Edit: I rewatched this clip because I was confused. Co-pilot died, pilot lived but isn't identified here. So sad, and I can understand now why the pilot's name is out of the press, if it still is. He's probably devastated. :(
dude probably was CIA. Didn't want civvie investigators sniffing around him or whatever documents
