UPS Driver Collapses at Front Door From Severe Heat

- As record-high temperatures continue across the nation, there's a new concern for UPS delivery drivers. In Arizona, a UPS driver struggled to make it onto the front porch of a house. He then collapses and lies down for a moment to recover. The UPS worker slowly gets back up and reaches for the doorbell before stumbling back to his non air-conditioned truck. UPS says the driver is fine, adding "our package delivery vehicles make frequent stops, making air conditioning ineffective."
"He's fine."
That's all you need to know about how much UPS cares about their workers.
That made me upset. If anything happens to him, they will replace him

Absolutely!
Exactly! I saw that response and was like "wtf????"
I wouldn’t doubt that UPS is going to find a reason to let him go in the future for giving them bad publicity. Those jobs they’ll work you to death and hire the next man on death row
What did you want, a suit telling everyone on live tv that the man had been thoroughly examined by a doctor, and declared fit and well? Violate the man's privacy and health information just for YOUR curiosity?
As a mechanic, I can promise you that making frequent stops would not cause the AC to be ineffective. It might slightly reduce its effects. But the bottom line is that UPS doesn’t want to buy trucks equipped with AC and they don’t want to pay for the extra gas costs of running that AC
Exactly !…pathetic
It has nothing to do with the cost of gas or buying vehicles with a/c. It has everything to do with maintenance . These vehicles have to be pulled out of service to maintain and replacements have to be available. These guys make $35/hr and know what their getting into. I should know, I did it 15 years. If you can't run with the big dogs, stay in the hub. You have to start hydrating the night before and then all day. Water and Salt will save your life!

I used to work for a major package delivery company. The trucks don't have AC, and they aren't insulated. You add the heat from the sun, the physical activity, and the engine, and you find the limits of the human body quick. I've had to on multiple occasions cobble together a water mist system out of a beverage cooler and a battery powered pump to hose myself down and cool off. Before that, I was dumping bottles of water over myself and chugging down liquids just to keep up with the heat. I can only imagine how bad it much be in the desert sun.
Heat exhaustion happens in the military all the time and it’s brutal.
I’m curious how do military people in training deal with this? Or Do they not train for today or do they do it indoors?

Well, instructions on how to recognize and deal with it obvious. One other thing is after an excersize, everybody has to turn over their water bottle. If you have way more water come out than the rest, you get yelled at.
After I passed to the reserves that happened to me twice, I forget to drink when I'm busy. And yes that has messed with me on a few occasions. We had a patrol during deployment where I was dehydrated. I'd drank a lot when I realised, but you don't undo dehydration in half an hour or so. Spent most of that afternoon battling the tendency to vomit and trying not to pass out.

As a former Amazon driver, this is normal. Heat stroke was a daily issue with most drivers. Ups says ac is pointless because of the frequent stops, but that’s not true. It helps a lot!
What they mean is its expensive to install AC in all their vehicles and they'd rather have workers die than do that.
I create entertaining videos as well 🤠
Right, in a situation like this the driver can't even find spot to cool off so it would be much safer and boost the morale of the drivers to have a cool air conditioned truck they can use to cool off momentarily as go to their next stop.

UPS worker: **literally on fire**
UPS higher ups: his fine
This pretty much sums up how America treats service workers.
A worker almost collapses from heat exhaustion and all the company says is “he’s fine”
I never knew that those trucks didn't have a/c. I always thought the drivers kept the door open as a way to save a little time between multiple stops. UPS is a HUGE company. There HAS to be a way to protect these drivers. I'm gonna make it a point to have an ice chest on my porch w/bottled water in it from here on out. This is insane
@Velma Scarborough girl I have an idea, sorry didn't mean to bother but I had no choice but to tell everyone to drink some cold water, on the rocks that way the heat will go away.😷
"air conditioning isnt effective" is such a lie. If you live where its hot you know that just having the AC blowing on you makes a huge difference, even if the cab stays 120 degree. Not to mention they dont offer any means of cooling. They could also add fans and misters to the trucks; but they dont because they dont care about the drivers.
I believe some new tesla model X have cooling built directly into seats. If they can do that then it should be mandatory for working vehicles like ups.
Get little bottle Gatorade, it’s good for heat and has electrolytes. This is the best way to take care of the delivery men, the heat and the change in the earth is god.
@@frankdatank2570 That's UPS speak for "Protecting our profits is more important to us. Air conditioning would cost too much money."

This is a human rights issue. And UPS should've been held accountable for this a long time ago. I quickly learned how UPS employees suffer compared to other delivery services.

I agree. My uncle worked with other delivery companies and experienced much better pay, respect, and working conditions compared to what he had at UPS.

I’m surprised we as a country aren’t looking after these poor guys. What horrible work conditions.

It's absolutely ridiculous that UPS And USPS trucks have no air. A/C is effective no matter how many stops the truck makes.
And they can take a break, and they might not need a break if the can account for a couple seconds to the open and close door
Black people worked for free for 400 years in the hot 🥵 sun ☀️ during slavery they didn’t complain plus they faced being tortured raped or killed on a daily basis.

absolutely, at least in the front where the driver sits. The doors can stay closed. This is horrible.
It may use more gas but at least they can cook off a few degrees and make it to the next stop

Poor guy :( I hope he's doing better and left that job
Cried watching this. “He’s fine.” How could a company have so little compassion?? He’s shaking! He’s passed out! Very dangerous
"He's fine" is just a summary. They do have Public Relations Departments you know.
The should have fired him and docked his last paycheque
Capitalism, baby.
Human life is just an asset and easily replaced like a broken light. Low investment for highest return.
That's not all that the company has to say about it.
Probably hungover
He definitely wasn't "fine" as UPS put it. You can look at his fingers and tell they were locked up from cramps. Buddy was definitely suffering from a heat related event. Absolutely ridiculous. A policy should be put in place regarding temperatures and operations. If safety is paramount then it should be done immediately.
if it's like USPS, the supervision PUSHES you allot, discouraging anything that "slows" the route. I'm glad I'm retired, can drink water, or beer lol, anytime.
They'd only admit he isn't fine if he died. He was likely fighting heat stroke.
Agreed. Now, some possible solutions to this would be to change working hours to minimize sun time, or to reduce hours overall and delay packages. Companies will use this type of disruption as a good excuse to automate deliveries via drones (which is already being tested and ongoing in places like China). Then, no delays so the company wins and the consumers also 'win' in the short term, but millions lose their jobs. Thank you capitalism.
If it’s like usps. He’s not. He has until tomorrow to get it together
UPS should be fined...
that "And perhaps our future" at the end made me shook, im still young so i am experiencing it getting worse and worse
I gave a delivery driver cold water bottle and seeing the gratefulness in his eyes made me want to give out more to every delivery driver. Its tough out there, hope they stay safe!

He drinks over 8 bottles of water a day every single day as well.
Tell him to get some Pedialyte powders to mix with his water for the electrolytes. Just trying to help him out.

I do package delivery by van and and air conditioning does not work with frequent stops we do. Ends up just eating up gas. So we balance it out with adjusting delivery times to early morning or early to late evening to make it tolerable. But that takes a lot greater planning and is still tough to do but that's the job.

I hope this young UPS driver takes care of himself. My dad was a USPS carrier for 45 years and he also had an incident like this of passing out in someone's door way they had to call 911 and took him to the hospital. Last year weather was amazing
I had this very same thing happen to me in Texas, as my assigned vehicle malfunctioned and exceeded temperatures of 140 degrees inside. I was in the hospital for 3 days. I had to retire early because of it. No compensation either. They threw me to the trash.

Given they dont exactly have an easy means of refilling their water either. It is actually quite the task. But thanks so much for thinking about other people and their struggles that you've never experienced in your precious little life, Ryan.
On top of the fact that water doesn't provide all the minerals lost by the body when we sweat, meaning you'd need to have another supplement as well for electrolytes, gatorade may seem like an obvious easy choice, but its not exactly cheap and its loaded with sugars.
