      Ila Yazzie im on the same boat. Im talking with a recruiter now. The process takes about a year from the time of application to COT. What i found out is that flight nursing is a position in the Reserves and Air National Guard. It's the most time consuming because other than your 1 weekend a month, you have to do a certain amount of flight hours per quarter in addition to your weekends. Your first year is alot of training even though your in the reserves. Im still going to go for it. Recruiters just aren't good at responding back

    WOW! Love your truth and candid point of view. I am an active duty 1Lt, and I came in after 6 years as a civilian nurse. The 1st thing I noticed was the fact the we do not scan meds! lol - Along with many other things you mentioned :) I will say that it does get better, and it is worth it in the long run for most people :) I wish everyone had more of a civilian background though, because it is interesting the level of expertise that is expected with "new" nurse officers. It does not mirror civilian nursing... but I digress :) I am grateful for this time and for the role I have :). Thanks for being bold enough to share!!!

      Wow great comment! Thank you so much for your input and for watching! I agree I wish people would have more civilian experience before coming in as well! Glad to know it gets better lol

    I’m pending my acceptance into the Air Force HPSP Medical Core for DO. Even though the nursing realm is totally different, your videos definitely give me perspective. My dad is a retired Army nurse after nearly 30 years of service, but he started out enlisted as a combat medic. He received all of the leadership experience he needed to take on being a medical officer when it was time. The crunched expectation to learn is definitely stressful and something to consider. Those extra responsibilities are killer. But the military takes care of so many civilian inconveniences. For me, it balances out, but it is something we have to think about thoroughly before making a decision. And your coworkers advice is on point!

    Thank you for your video! I was previously enlisted in the US Army as a medic and now am in nursing school with two semesters left. This was such a great video, Jay! You are absolutely right about possibly not having the time as an enlisted member to go to nursing school at any time. I am an enlisted member and I am actually separating from the AF this year so that I can start nursing school. I work on the flight line and attending a Traditional BSN program full time ontop of working full time, volunteering, AND maintaining my fitness would just be extremely stressful for me. I started following you on IG and subscribed to you here because I thought about applying to the NECP and commissioning as a nurse but then I decided that I wanted to be a civilian nurse instead. I still enjoy watching your videos and I think you should definitely continue to talk about your life as an AF nurse because they're super informative and there are very, very, very few AF officers on YT, let alone AF nurses.

    Have you ever thought about going guard/reserves? You can have the freedom of civilian jobs/satisfaction and get the "fun" part of military nursing from responding to natural disasters, deploying, much more flexibility and control of your career. There are maybe 7 AF hospitals conus as you know and many are used for training. I was AD inn the medical field, intrested inn doing NECP, but leadership was not supportive of my education, therefore transitioned to guard to complete courses for nursing school. I have seen both sides and all the nurses in my unit are so happy that they transitioned or remained guard/reserves. Plus each unit has different missions, so you can find what works best for you whether you want to continue clinical nursing or do flight, cerfp, or any other options.

    Hair and make-up, bomb. I'm surprised they don't scan meds, WOW! You mentioned being floated down to the ER. Is there a noticeable difference in a civilian hospital and a military one? Do they admit most patients or transfer them to an OSH? Do they have a 24-hour observation unit? Do they turn pts. away who are not current/former servicemen? Anyways, have a good one!

    • @JayQuinn92

    • @josh_tes

      You will need to go through a civilian nursing program at a university. From there you will need to pass the NCLEX and get your RN (Registered Nurse) License. After that you will be a Nurse, you can then join the military specifically Airforce as a Nurse. You may be able to get the military to pay for Nursing school if you sign a contract with them saying youll go in after you graduate. The same goes for any Nursing specialty. Whether you want to be a RN, CRNA, Nurse Practitioner....you have to achieve that outside of the military and then go in as that. You got this!

    • @lindawinegar1311
      @lindawinegar1311 4 роки тому

      Get your nursing degree first. A two year nursing program at a local community college is a good start. Look for a program that has good clinical experience. You can then bridge over to a BSN or a BSN/MSN. Most civilian hospitals have tuition assistance. Working a Two-Day-Alternative would help with est a predictable schedule. I did this for my BSN and MBA. I wish I had received my MSN instead since it would better prepare me for teaching in a two year program in my senior years.

    Hey just found this video thank you very informative ..... I think I’m older so my views and experience are very different but I’ve been a civilian nurse for 10 years . I understand the frustration you may be going through but with that being said maybe since I’m old, but I think that when you join the military as a nurse you understand that you are there to serve your country and sometimes during times of war circumstances are not ideal and you have to just roll with the punches and get it done. I’ve worked many many years as an emergency room nurse and things get crazy and ugly and you have to perform your duty to the best of your ability . And anyone who isn’t ready for that may need to reconsider 👵🏽🤷🏽‍♀️I’m 36 and thinking of joining the navy reserve and have understand that. Thank you again and look forward to your Videos

      It was not stopped in 2016 when I signed my contract. It has since stopped since I’ve been in. Everyone who signed was still eligible and received their payment

      Jay Quinn That makes sense. I’m applying to the NECP (Nurse enlisted commissioning program) and I’ve been trying to find videos about nurses in the Air Force. Though you weren’t prior enlisted I enjoy your videos and they’re very informative. I do want to ask how did they or you choose what speciality you’ll perform as a nurse?

    • @JayQuinn92
      @JayQuinn92  5 років тому

      Thank you. Oh ok! I was able to choose ICU because I had prior experience in the ICU as a civilian so I qualified for that speciality code.

    Do you have to go to nursing and graduate before being a nurse in the AF? Or can they train you like other jobs in the AF?

    Hello, I am in the process of putting in my package to go officer as an RN now. I am really wondering how the student loan situation is. I know you said its not a fast process but I am wondering how long does it actually take for them to start paying on your loan? how much do they pay per year? and how do they disperse the payments? I am also wondering what the pay is like start as 2nd LT. Because it looks extremely low compared to what you could make as a civilian so I am just really worried about that too.

    • @JayQuinn92
      @JayQuinn92  4 роки тому +1

      shannieelala It took over a year for my loans to be paid and they pay in one lump sum to your lender. You don’t touch the money. You can see pay charts online but i did take a cut in pay when I joined. You are paid salary based not hourly in the military. You will “break even” and then some the more you move up in rank. It does help with the BAH and etc.

    2nd Lt as a charge nurse....in house supervisor? Aren't charge nurses mainly 1st Lts and Capts? Plus, making a comparison of an in house supervisor as a chief nurse on steroids is not an accurate description. CN are Lt Cols and not floor nurses and handle the careers of all nurses in the Medical Group. As for Captains, they do work as staff nurses however, the additional time is used for additional duties. It is not until you are a senior Capt to Maj where you are more of an Admin role such as element leader and flight commander. Please don't give false information or fluffed up information on nursing in the military.

    • @JayQuinn92
      @JayQuinn92  6 років тому

      No they are not just 1st Lts. I wouldn’t say I was a charge nurse if I wasn’t acting in that role. I have a charge nurse and I’ve also been the house supervisor!

    I have a question. I'm currently in the Marine Corps and I want to become a Nurse afterwards. Should I start to get my pre reqs out the way with TA? Also what are military friendly schools? Also could I get my degree and become a nurse in the Air Force or Army? What is the process? Any tips are appreciated. Thanks

    • @JayQuinn92
      @JayQuinn92  6 років тому +1

      David Williams Yes get prerequisites out of the way. Look for yellow ribbon schools, those are the military friendly ones. Once you have your BSN you can join the army navy or Air Force Nurse Corp. Just go and talk to a health professions recruiter to start the process

    • @TheDwilliams1000
      @TheDwilliams1000 6 років тому

      Jay Quinn ok. I might go a different route. I'm 25 now I'll be 27 when I leave the Marines in 2020. I will get my ADN, work then my BSN

      You can pay them if you want or put them in deferment. It’s up to you, they continue to incur interest as all loans do though
