  • This showcases a rarely known or seen game that took place on July 22, 1992 in Monte Carlo just before the start of the 1992 Summer Olympics.
    Michael Jordan calls it the greatest game he has ever played. And it also served as the moment that Magic Johnson and Larry Bird verbally gave up "their thrown" to the new King of Basketball: Michael Jordan.

    I had the great pleasure of meeting Magic at a charity event in Los Angeles years ago.
    Walked up to introduce myself "I'm from Boston".
    First words with that mile wide Magic smile-- "Oh no:" then he laughed as he knew I was just messin' with him.
    We talked for a bit, told him how much we miss you guys, Kareem, Worthy, Scott and all the love we have for ya'll..
    He said "I know, whenever I'm visiting Boston I get it from all over the place.."
    He's a great guy. I carry a great memory of him.

      How? Lebron going back to Cleveland is about as close to this era as you are ever gonna get. Lebron took up the challenge to be the greatest by going back to Cleveland I think. Everyone said he would never be the greatest if he played with guys like Wade his whole career. He went back to the Cavs and he's going to win there too. I grew during the MJ era and the Bad Boys were my team, but Lebron is the greatest player ever.

    This scrimmage is something I always wanted to see and would buy the DVD of this in a heartbeat. You guys have to remember that while these guys like MJ and Magic we're legends, they carried a lot of that old school playground pride and didn't take no nonsense on the court. Sure there was smiles like we see on these guys, but they all achieved the greatness they got by working their asses off. MJ, Magic and the others going at each other is really no different than you going at it with your brother, cousin or friend on the court. Sure you love each other, but when your on that court playing each other and it starts to get real intense, it's on and the love is gone baby haha. But the upside of it is that it brings the absolute best of you because neither one of you want to lose and feel humiliated so that drives you to be the best you can be. Basic the same thing with MJ and Magic. There was hugs and smiles, but it wasn't all hugs and smiles during those infamous scrimmages. But I'm also sure it built up a strong level of respect and admiration among these hall of legends as well. It's one thing when you play each other several times during the season, but it's another thing when you train with each other, live with each other, practice with and against each other and play together. I think it's healthy for Magic and MJ to have that attitude and approach on the court, there's no signs of letting up or showing weakness, as a leader you can't show weakness on the court. I don't think Magic or MJ would have had nearly the success they had in their careers with that kind of mentality and leadership, do you?

    this game, one of the very rare instances, where magic's antics distanced him from his teammates, and mj's tenacity galvanized his teammates. magic talking shit to mj made his teammates uncomfortable because they knew they'd ultimately be the ones that would have to man up toe to toe with mj, not magic. magic should have rubbed it in mj's face the way he had done for the previous ten years. by hi-fiving his teammates as they outplayed the other team.

Good job. Melo and Paul may not be first ballot either, if at all. There are all-stars, superstars and first ballot HOFs. Nowadays, because of the 10th place trophy culture we live in, everyone is a "superstar" which is sad. Which of course you have taken to a new level calling everyone first ballot. Gerrard Steven '92 would beat the 2012 since the '92 team had better big men but if you're talking about positions from pg-sf, then the 2012 could hold their own. 2008 has a better chance of ousting the '92 team since most of their key players were at their prime compared to Bird and Magic who were at their twilight of their careers.

    • @danielmarkulic9399

    • @jimhoover7345

      In what world could the 2012 team ever beat the 92 team. You really think that yhe 2012 team had anyone that could match up with jordan? Besides that basketball today is soft. The players are soft. No one and i mean no one (in my 37 years have i ever seen anyone that wanted to not only win but wanted to make sure there was no way in hell that you could ever beat them) than magic,bird, and jordan

  • @RossMonster
    @RossMonster 10 років тому +31

    Ridiculous. Just ridiculous. They had the greatest PG of all time (Magic), the greatest SG (Jordan), the greatest SF (Bird), and arguably the great PF (Malone is debatable with Duncan and Barkley). The only position I wouldn't make a case for is center, and that's because I think it belongs to Hakeem Olajuwon for his incredible post-moves and staunch defense. A team like that will never happen again.

    • @dojoma630
      @dojoma630 10 років тому +19

      Hakeem Olajuwon was NOT an American citizen at that time. Therefore could not be on the team.

      I agree with what you said, but Bird was well past his prime (he retired in 1992 actually). So while I agree that they had the best at their positions, Bird (and Magic) were past their prime, well past their prime.

    • @Omnicronimous
      @Omnicronimous 10 років тому

      Thierry Gomez Yep. And both Bird and Magic were better than anyone else on that team when they were in their prime.

    • @Omnicronimous
      @Omnicronimous 10 років тому +3

      TL N Bird was a SF. He started a lot of games at PF in the early '80s until McHale started at PF. But as soon as McHale came in off the bench Bird always slid into the SF position for most of the rest of the game. Then again, there were times when he played every position. Overall though, his primary role was as a small forward. McHale was the main Power Forward.

    Did anyone notice that the game Mccallum referred to here, and on his book, "the Dream Team," is different from the one MJ and Magic referred to on the documentary aired on NBATV? For one thing, according to Mccallum (www.si.com/more-sports/2012/07/24/usa-basketball-game-nobody-saw), Laettner was on Magic's team and made the first assist of the game resulting Barkley's first 2 points. This is different from the documentary as both MJ and Magic denied having Laettner on their team.
    Anyone else picked up this up? Just curious. :)

      laettner was an alternate. 5 on 5. beyond the ten, the last two, bird laying on his stomach with a stack of towels rolled up under his chin, and laettner giving guys a breather, for both teams, until it got really competitive and no one wanted to sub out for him.

  • @vitalijus3

    • @twowheelseatingmeals-motoj8080
      @twowheelseatingmeals-motoj8080 7 років тому

      It wasnt that. Without a doubt they wanted I.T to be on the team he is a straight up G on the court. But the problem was that Michael had a strict condition that he would not play if Isaiah was on the team, so of course at the time who was the golden boy of the NBA? Certainly not Isaiah, its a no brainer who you would pick. Isaiah or Michael.

    • @simplysimple7628
      @simplysimple7628 4 роки тому +2

      Laettner had to be there. That’s the rules. Had to have one non professional player on the team and laettner was the best in collegiate ball at that time. I still believe that mullin should’ve been out and dominique should’ve been in. Isiah definitely deserved a spot but they had that thing with MJ, pipp. Hakeem wasn’t a U.S citizen yet so he couldn’t benon the team but no doubt should’ve been on that team. Imagine the committee that had to choose this team?!?! Talk about tough......🤦🏽‍♂️😳

  • @korgond
    @korgond 8 років тому

    Hakeem Olajuwan should have been one of the centers of this team. He has been mostly referring the best center of all time, but why they didn't take him to the dream team, remained a mystery.

    • @alexh8613
      @alexh8613 8 років тому

      +manfred edilson If you compared Olajuwon's career with Ewing and Robinson's careers up until 1992, Olajuwon was the best of the three. The problem is that during the Summer of 92, Olajuwon was going through serious trade talks with the Rockets. The Rockets were accusing him of faking injuries and the Olajuwon was accusing the Rockets of caring more about making money, than putting together a winning team.
      That being said, it didn't matter, because Olajuwon didn't become an American citizen until April of 1993. So he was ineligible to play for the American team.

    • @pyeuneu
      @pyeuneu 8 років тому

      Alex H he really wasnt the best of three. Robinson was thought to be the best as he won rookie of the year, defensive player of the year i think and took spurs into a strong contender while rockets were sub 500 team. And ewings knicks were always a contender too. 94-96 olajuwon lifted himself above 2.

    Biggest tragedy ever committed to this game is that this Dream team didn't play against Europe's Dream team, or Yugoslavia.
    That is the best game that never was... Cause Yugoslavia felt apart.
    Sometimes i imagine what would that be like, them playing against Petrović, Kukoč, Radja, Danilović, Divac, Djordjević, Obradović, Paspalj... And many other players that after played for independent countries of former Yugoslavia... I imagine.
