Replacing the seals on a Bosh CP-1 High Pressure fuel pump, car won't start

  • Car was running with little power, especially up hills, after a month of this, car wouldn't start.
    Checked these basics first. Car needs Air, Fuel and compression to run.
    ** Air Side **
    - air filter not blocked (Run without filter in, see if it's better)
    - Turbo turns freely, and not worn.
    - air pipes/manifold not blocked, or leaking
    - MAP and MAF sensors working as they should do (volt meter, or OBD)
    - Check glow plugs all come on and resistance 0.8 to 1.2 Ohm. (my other video)
    - Check glow plugs aren't loose (no/low compression)
    - Check crank sensor pick-up
    - Check fuel pressure sensor
    ** Fuel side **
    - Low pressure pump working (listen for it Pos 1 & 2 of ignition)
    - Fuel filter not blocked, or full of water (usually a drain underneath)
    - Fuel in High Pressure rail
    - Injectors fire (my other video)
    - injector fuel return test (leak down test)
    Anything else?
    A few of you want these details...

    Capping the open pipes is VERY important. You could also brush loose dirt away with a shop vac to get rid of the bulk crud. Then get the whole pump into a wash tank to remove 95% of the loose crud that will be into every gap. It won't be the whole job but makes the later deep cleaning much easier.

    ** Tip 1 ** - When you take the out the pump retaining screws, hold a magnet stick close by to catch the screws rather than drop them into the bowels of the engine bay.
    ** Tip 2 ** - A one size too small Torx bit will often appear to fit but will slip and chew the crew head. ALWAYS try the next size up as very likely to fit snugly and can't slip.

    @7:04 This is the reason you should clean the entire outer body casing before commencing. Small micro particles that can be transferred is a no no. No particles ought be on the inside anyhow, so do take care its an awful lot of work to get it wrong. Good illustration video in both respects neg and pos = Perfect.

      It will all be washed off in the ultrasonic bath, but an external bulk clean makes later deep cleaning much easier. I would fully wash the whole lot, probably in stages so cylinder parts can't get mixed up.

    Wasnt that leaky, should have seen one on my jeep, you could see the diesel seeping from under heads when cold. Whole engine soaked in diesel. Hopefully it wont leak anymore and HOPEFULLY no gunk got into the hoses. I used ultrasonic washed on the body and all the components before assembly. Anyway, fuel hoses have some kinda brow/rusty film on the inside (took a swab wit a qtip). Also... the pumps shaft had some corrosion residue (no pits), and that tells you much about fuel quality and water in it... Now, imagine what would circulate in the system if you had metal fuel tank (mines plastic).... Anyways, how did it go? Pump seals did it for you? I dont think the seals alone can cause crank/no start, at least not as long as the air doesnt get inside the system. And if it does get in, then you would have a MASSIVE leak.

      I was very carefull with it when the pump was in the car and no tubes connected. Plus, before the finally connecting the HP pipe, I turned the engine over with the High Pressure outlet not connected to anything. This way it pumped fuel all the way through, but not into the common pressure rail, which obviously has no filter and goes straight to th injectors.

    Hi there! Great video Alan! Maybe you guys can help me with an issue. I replaced the seals on the Bosch CP1 cause I had a mayor diesel leak. After doing so, the engine fired up right away and I tested the car and everything seemed fine. The issue is that now, while I accelerate at full throttle, the car enters into LIMP mode and dies on me, you can turn the key off-on and the car will start immediately and I can resume driving... This didn't happened before. If someone knows what could be my issue or is there any part of the pump I should replace please let me know. Any help is much appreciated. Cheers!

      This wont help Edgard but any changes to the fuel system need the engine ECU settings to be reset. MutiECUScan and the appropriate OBD cables allow you to look at the ECU parameters and reset to suit new parts.

    Hi, can this pump make a ticking noise? Mine is working fine but the engine makes a ticking noise, only accelerating (injectors have been refurbished) .
    Thanks

    • @alanmann
      @alanmann  Місяць тому +1

      No expert - but a light ticking noise is usually injectors - there is a check valve in the pump, which could be worn and give a similar sound. Try putting a screwdriver on the pump, and rest the handle on your ear, and see if the sound is louder in your ear. Kind of a stethoscope teqnique. Otherwise, ticking sounds can be you cam/valve lifters not pressurising with oil. (can't remember this engine that well anymore) Hope that helps.

      @@alanmannhi, the valve you are talking about is mounted on the rail on may car(320cdi w210). I’ll change it this week to see if it make any difference.

      @@cloatza89 Check your oil pressure (if you can) - especially when doing higher revs - If the oil lamp on the dashboard flickers on, then probably a blocked sump pickup.

    Could this be the reason for no start when warm ? The seals might expand when up to temperature there for it lets in air causing it to turn but not start?

    • @marcinn6312
      @marcinn6312 2 роки тому

      Exactly opposite. The diesel leaks out and air gets in when cold. When up to temp seals expand and tighten the seal, no leaks. I could literally see diesel seepeing out from under the head on my jeep when cold. Hot - no prob. So, no start when cold, the longer the car sits the more air in system, the longer crank. That is... if theres no electric pump in tank. Jeep doesnt have one, has low pressure pump at the front of the block, above HP pump, that sucks fuel from tank. You get air in, good luck starting it.

      Just loosen the metal pipe from the pump to the common rail. As soon as 1 drop comes out, the pressure will be gone. Or wait 5 mins or more after stopping the engine. Pressure drops by itself.

    Can you go into more detail about flushing the pump through with diesel at the end. Which pipes do i leave off. Or do you connect them all but leave it unattached frm the engine?

    • @alanmann
      @alanmann  7 років тому +2

      connect the 2 plastic pipes from the fuel filter. Leave off the metal one going to the high pressure fuel rail. (optional - take out the glow plugs to make turning the engine over easier) Find a way to collect the fuel coming out of the metal pipe on the pump. Use a rubber tube, angle a plastic bottle. Lets loads pump through. I think I disconnected the pipe from the High pressure bar, loosened it at the pump end, moved the end around for easy access, then tighted it back up at the pump (if that makes sense) it was easy to collect the fuel into a clean bottle and put back into the tank. Let plenty flow through, you don't want any dirt getting to the injectors.

    • @alanmann
      @alanmann  6 років тому +2

      just leave off the metal one, that connects to the common rail. If you remove your glow plugs, you can turn the engine longer without flattening the battery. I did it for a minute I think. You don't any rubbish getting to the injectors, EVER :)

      @@dagurorarinsson2827 it is physically the same pump on a w203 although a c200 will most likely require more pressure than a Corsa so in that sense it may be a different spec but anyhow, Mercedes can supply the HP pump seal kits. Be careful though - on a Mercedes, the HP pump creates a venturi effect in the tank that draws fuel from one side to the other, if the HP pump is weak the car might appear to start and run OK but say on 1/4 tank of fuel (maybe 100 miles range) it will appear to run out of fuel.
