    This comments section in a nutshell;
    "It's solid state, so it's automatically shit."
    "Who in the fuck would spend 2k+ on a solid state amp?"
    That probably covers everything.

      Nope - Helix, Axe FX, Kemper...pro quality solid state. I use an Orange CR60 as my gigging amp...lots of very good solid state. This sounds like ACTUAL shit. Really terrible.

      and we can expect a new incarnation of the Legacy probably, too. Steve does really well about updating his amp pretty well, which is nice. But even if he doesn't, the Legacy III is still stupid versatile and a killer amp for the price.

    £2200... for a boss head... plus another grand for a 212.... that chappers says can only do high gain rock/metal.
    So I'd basically have to walk past;
    The axe fx 2's
    The kempers
    The mesa's
    The Marshalls
    The Engls
    The friedmans
    The EVHs
    The Revvs
    And pretty much every other well known and loved heads and Cabs, to spend more... on a boss ....
    But it's OK... it has an emulated Di out.

    I think it sounds great. It's very versatile amp and must be bulletproof as any boss product. Price is on the high side yeah, but find me one amp with all these features. I wish more companies would invest in the boutique SS guitar amplifier (not cheap modellers).

      for cleans and bass, solid state all day long. for mild breakup, tubes still have the edge. can you play with solid state? of course. a good guitar player will make anything sound good. but this solid state is trying to emulate tube and as far as I'm concerned it's not doing a very good job especially if you charge 2500. I have a feeling they'll drop the price in a few months if not discontinue altogether. their 1500 dollar solid state blues cube 'tour' on the other hand is a very good sounding product and the price is approachable.

    • @nextmove
      @nextmove 6 років тому +2

      I've had my tube amp 30 years. Never had an issue. Never had a tube go bad at a show....ever ! For my taste this amp sounds (on here at least) extremely compressed and full of sizzle . It's just not to my taste at all, others may like it but I couldn't live with this. For this kind of cash you could buy a nice HiWatt

  • @neuk01642
    @neuk01642 8 років тому +31

    I don't know if it's the mic'ing of the cabs, the cab's themselves or the amp but it sounds really hollow and thin. I mean all the frequencies are there but it just sounds like the 10 watt practice amp I had when I first bought a guitar... just don't think I'm hearing £2.2k worth of amp... even for a modelling amp... The Kemper with the built in amp sounds better, the AxFX sounds better, the Line 6 Helix sounds better... and all of them are cheaper

    • @neuk01642
      @neuk01642 8 років тому

      I'm using pretty shit hot B&W headphones so I know it's not them. I don't know. it just got louder but didn't seem to add any heft to the tone was just thin and loud or thin and quiet...

    • @KevinSPeace
      @KevinSPeace 8 років тому

      I was thinking the EXACT same thing. The frequencies are there, this review just makes it sound like it lacks balls. I am a Fractal Axe Fx II owner running FRFR and listening to it thru the same speakers that i am listening to THIS, there is no compare. I mean, I understand you have the way that UA-cam squashes and compresses, maybe its just bad mic placement, maybe their in the room tone sounded WAY much better than they realized was recording and in the end, it just wasnt feasible to re-record .... who knows, but it doesn't make me even want to go listen to one.

    • @roguejellybean2651
      @roguejellybean2651 8 років тому +11

    • @neuk01642
      @neuk01642 8 років тому +5

      Yeah I toyed with the idea of the Helix but Andertons had the JVM205 on offer for a while so I did that instead. Turns out I'm a hot glass man. Love those El34's man... Helix is top quality but if I was going modelling and had that to spend I'd probably go Kemper Power Amp and get a FRFR cab built to order... but my heart is rooted in Friedman... the BE100, or the Butterslax... just biblical!

      Worth a look. Mind you Seymour Duncan and D'marzio (pretty sure I've got that wrong), do pretty good pick ups as well.

    The way you describe this creates the tonal characteristics is exactly how the Fractal Audio guys have been doing it all along. looking at every component within the circuit to see how it affects the sound. They look at how the component acts under different conditions, to accurately recreate the sound of the original amp, plus make the dials act like they do on the original

    Without trying to be too dismissive, seems that The Captain is struggling to justify this thing and you can see why. For me there are just too many better solutions that do what this does (and many that do more or do it better) at much less money. Can't see Boss selling many of these. Probably end up as a bit of collectors item in a few years.

      I really don't care for these modern digital amps either. I'm more of a fan of the old analogue transistor amps, like B.B. King's Lab Series, or the famous Roland Jazz Chorus - genuine classics - although they're better at clean tones than distortion. Old Randalls sound pretty good too. Of course, nothing can truly replace a great old Vox, Fender, Marshall or Orange valve amp, or a modern Friedman, Blackstar or Victory for that matter.

    Stupidly overpriced for an amp that sounds extremely characterless. People shell out money for tube amps for the real deal, why would people shell out MORE money for an amp that tries to sound like a tube amp but just plain isn't?

    • @chrisbeal5491
      @chrisbeal5491 8 років тому

      Definitely true, you can get an all tube Marshall Dsl 40c for around 700 dollars and it's killer. Just swap out the speaker, but that's whatever your personal taste is. Although, Boss's new tech savvy idea with this amp is pretty impressive.

    • @theoryofthrash
      @theoryofthrash 8 років тому +3

      It is a neat idea, and the higher wattages do sound sick, it's just that if I was looking to spend over 2 grand I wouldn't spend it on an emulator imo

      Yeah man, shelling out that much cash for a solid state amp, no matter what it is, just doesn't sound right. 100% agree

    • @bmxriderforlife1234
      @bmxriderforlife1234 6 років тому

      it doesnt matter what the technology behind the amp is. its value.
      if i brought you a solid state amp that could perfectly recreate any amp (not just get close like a kemper) but literally perfectly copy the sound and everything else thats important of any amp you wanted.
      well then.
      if it was like a cross between a kemper and AXE FX with all the good of both but drop all the bad plus make it even better. then itd be worth the price.
      you go tube because we like the way it colors sound. but not all tubes are created equal. and not every tube amp comes out the same.
      for an amp thats only supposed to do so many things then fine that works. but look at high end headphone amps. solid state is the way to go. tubes arent as clean.
      and if you can replicate the distortion perfectly and even adjust it to create new sounds then who the fuck cares.
      just doesnt seem like anyone has put the effort in whilst having a large enough budget.

      What makes digital or tube worth it, but not solid state? I'd argue it's worth it if it sounds amazing, and if they used quality components. My issue with spending that much on a solid state amp would be resale value. There's definitely a solid state stigma thanks to the crazy amount of terrible sounding, and cheaply made, solid state amps over the years. It's nice knowing you can pick up a good tube amp, and then when you're ready to try something new, get most your money back from it.

      Judge an amp by its abilities/tone, not by its technology. That said,this amp is worth £1000 max IMO.

      Hahaha.....realize that tubes are virtually worthless (money wise)? Those things were in everything in ye olde days. Every cheaps-ass radio in the 70’s had tubes. It’s ridiculous that we pay so much for ancient tech....they’re essentially not much more dificult to make than lightbulbs...
      There are brilliant solid state hifi amps costing tens of thousands of dollars....the transistors are a fraction of the cost of the amp, same with a tube amp...it’s not the tubes you are paying for. It’s the whole package. So why are there so little expensive solid state amps for guitar? Because no guitarists are willing to pay for it.....

    When I first saw this video, I was totally perplexed how they could justify selling a solid state amp for upwards of $3k, but I was at a Local Sam Ash yesterday looking at the boss Katana amp series and a sales rep from Roland/Boss was there and he gave some perspective. He said the Waza amp served a twofold marketing purposes directly related to the Katana series-1) it was proof of concept for their new, more organic sounding solid state modeling, onboard cab simulation, and power amp output staging and 2) it introduced the market to Boss as an amplifier manufacturer as apposed to an effect pedal maker. So they didn’t intend to sell many of these anyway. Interesting plan, and honestly it seems to have worked because the Katana series is amazing and they seem to be flying off the shelves everywhere!
