It makes me wonder if it was because he knew he was going to die then. Cuz if you notice he keeps throwing the bones and maybe the bones kept coming back with the same fate. So instead of running from his fate, he decided to meet it. Then again if you think about it, if you've been hearing about this thing doing all this murdering throughout the city, there's no point in running because he will find you. You might as well stay in and face it.

It’s a great scene in atmosphere and execution, and I always loved how the Predator didn’t just shoot King Willie or sneak up on him. He had the upper hand all along of course, but wanted a face-to-face confrontation with a respectable adversary, no gadgets.

Good observation on your part. City Hunter code name "GhosT" was younger, taller and way more blood thirsty aggressive in his hunt execution as opposed to the methodical Jungle Hunter. He was the prototype for the Berserker strain of Predators as well. However he did not heed the warnings of the Elder Predators who warned him his reckless abandon in putting himself in harms way would be his undoing. In his face off against the underestimated Mike Harrigan their warnings came true.

Under the "code of honor of combat" with the Predators, the Predator would only use a weapon in relation to what the "Prey" would use ie if you use a gun on him the Predator would use his ballistic weapon. If the "Prey" use a blade the Predator would use a blade.

For those that didn’t understand why he was “playing with bones, It’s fortune telling called cleromancy, it’s practiced using a handful of small animal bones (often known as "Throwing the Bones"). From this he claimed to gain knowledge of the future and other hidden events. It was supposedly through this fortune-telling that he became aware of the other-worldly nature of the City Hunter stalking Los Angeles, believing the creature to be a "demon" who could not be stopped in its quest for blood. Everytime you throw bones, you’re rewriting a different future but this time, everytime he threw bones, it always came back exactly the same, something he mentions never happens.

the coldness of this scene is what sells it. you don't even get to see the fight king willie put up because it doesn't matter. his death, his place as nothing more than a trophy, is such a foregone conclusion that you only see the process of the predator cleaning his trophy before mounting it on his case. you're told that willie was worthy to be a trophy, but he was REDUCED to just being a trophy in the eyes of the viewer.
without directly telling you, the film shows the audience just what the predator is. he's a big game hunter. he's a sport hunter. the coldness of that demonstration, the way the film robs you of the fun part and shows you the horrifying part, it reduces humans in the eyes of the audience to just being game for this thing to hunt.
this scene was amazing because of how efficiently it made that clear to the audience. there was to be no glorious battle, only a demonstration of your place on HIS food chain. and you're not even food, you're a trophy.

Can I just say that director Stephen Hopkins actually did a great job directing this film? I *_love_* the 1:08 - 1:17 scene of the invisible Predator stomping through the pond with the lightning sparking over him, combined with Alan Silvestri's suspenseful score. I believe Hopkins deserves more loving despite all the flack professional critics had been giving him.

I agree, that's such an awesome sequence. The choir singing gives it an otherworldly vibe, quite Biblical actually. King Willie is probably quoting the Jewish Bible, as he's talking about God's Holy Mountain. He truly believes the Predator to be a demon. After all, the Predator 'falls' from heaven when he enters Willie's domain, and the demon emerges out of the darkness, treading water, which represents the force of chaos in Biblical symbolism. There's an inconsistency where the Predator's cloaking device turns off because of the contact with the water, but then in the next shot, it's still invisible. Perhaps, if done on purpose, it means that from Willie's perspective, the entity is still a mysterious unknown. A dual world, and the Pred's uncloaked form can only be seen in the upside down reflection in water, i.e. on the other side. A brief fight is implied, and Willie's final death cries blend over into the shot of his severed head being carried away by the Predator, giving the impression that the already dead and decapitated Willie is still screaming in agony, and his tormented soul is being taken back to the beyond. I think it's cool how this whole scene is presented as if the Predator is indeed a demonic being. The sequence is rather unique in all the Predator movies, and it's quite brilliant.

As soon as King Willie heard the brick falling from the roof, he already knew it was the predator and didn't even hesitate to look back to his men to call for back up since it's only been mere seconds since Harrigan walked away.

This opus II, is as good as predator I.
He keeps the spirit of true warriors, which is not pure gratuitous violence, but a confrontation as much physical and technical, as spiritual and mystical.
      Outside, look at...
In all the battles shown, the one who "takes us to the gut", the one who most symbolizes the universal function of the predator, is the one who opposes King Willy and the predator.
      Why?
Because this fight, this fight for life against a fight for the trophy, the glory, is between two true warriors, who face each other, in two opposite visions of existence.
King Willy is a vile, malignant, cruel, greedy, without any empathy, killer who has always struggled to impose himself in a hard world.
But he’s doing it for the wrong reasons, carrying death on innocent people, because he’s afraid of death actually.
The predator, on the other hand, kills because spiritually he embodies an opposite force, which fights against what is most destructive for life. And he brags about it.
These two fighters are surprisingly similar, both in their attitudes and in their physical attributes.
And if, the predator shows him so much respect, we see him when he polishes his skull, it is because for this fight, King Willy was forced to overcome what he has more anchored in him: the fear of death...
In a sense, for the king, this fight is a redemption. He knows that he will not win against THE OTHER, but against HIMSELF.
That is why we see nothing of the progress of this fight.
That is why we see nothing of the progress of this fight.
For it is safer on the mystical, spiritual, universal planes than in this fight.
The EVIL ONE cannot defeat the RIGHTEOUS, for the evil one knows that he is not following the path that preaches the love of life, necessary for the maintenance of life.
This struggle is in fact internal, and the king won it, only because he exceeds his fear of death. His face expresses it quite well...
This "invisible" fight is therefore a fight that the king leads against himself.

I don't remember how old I was when I first watched it, early teens most likely, but the two Predators movies were just about the most intense my childhood cinema experience ever got. Made the first Terminator (another "adult" film I was a big fan of at the time) look like Barney the Dinosaur in comparison. This part pushed the bar even farther than the first (even though the trauma from seeing the skinned CIA agents is still there in my head) because here there were boobs and coke as well. I think I was shaking with fear for at least half the entire runtime.

He starred in a 70s Amicus horror film called "the Beast Must Die" where he played a wealthy big game hunter who brought a group of people to his private island, believing one of them was a werewolf that he intended to hunt. 10 Little Indians meets the Most Dangerous Game meets blaxploitation.

The anticipation, the suspense of a man staying behind, alone in some god-forgotten dead-end where no one can hear your scream, the atmosphere, the music, all comes together.
