CLOUD UP 1 Vs VIK 1 - Naturehike Budget One-man Tent Reviews

  • Towards the end of last year, I managed to pick up a couple of budget-priced solo tents to review - the Cloud Up 1 and the Vik 1 both from Naturehike. Now, at last, is the first impression tent off!
    I purchased my very first One Man Tent - the one man version of the Cloud Up. I also managed to find another one man tent by the good folk at Naturehike, The Vik 1, and thought it would be a great idea to have a look at them together.
    Interested in either of these tents, or any of the other gear / tents mentioned in this video, then you can find links below!

    I have the latest version of the VIK 1 and there are a couple of differences I noticed. 1- the pole tension on my tent is just right all around. I did see where the tent you set up has extreme tension on the end. 2- The roof vents were changed on the latest version due to the issues you were having. on my tent the vents must be opened from the outside, but they do stay wide and open. As far as use, for central North Carolina in the US this tent is quite good for colder weather. I have used it twice so far and the first time was in very damp cool conditions. I have found the tent to be quite dry in the rain. Condensation was present, but quite manageable considering I was waking up in very dense fog and rain. The pros for me are light weight, easy to set up and enough room to sit up in. if you are over five feet nine inches tall you may be a little cramped in this tent. The cons are I am not entirely confident how this tent will hold up in the wind, and the light color is not so great at night when there is a full moon. Compared to my Lanshan 1 this tent is a little heavier, but also a little roomier. If I had to pick one or the other, for cold weather I will go with the VIK 1 and use my Lanshan 1 in summer time. If are interested, I have posted some images in my blog. www.flickr.com/photos/soleful2001/albums/72157688966469750 I would also like to mention that I enjoy your channel and look forward to more videos.

      Thanks very much. I would love to test out some goochy gear, but its good to know you can still get out and enjoy the wild camping experience without forking out £600 for a tent. Its not like I'm arctic camping! And yeah, I should have been doing plenty of charity walks by now, will hope to get some organised before the year is out. Even if the Himalaya's is cancelled, I will still do some fundraising for both Hospiscare and the NHS, so watch this space, and also follow us on Facebook for more details. Hello! You just got yourself a new subscriber, I love all your reviews, straight to the point and reasonable, actually talking about things that matter to users instead of advertisement dribble or poor quality home reviews.
    I've been researching which tent to get and really wrestling with it, and your videos just kept popping up again and again for the tents I was searching and were very helpful.
    Right now I'm debating whether to get a lanshan or a VIK. Both seem like the best priced while also being very low weight. A comparision would be cool (but not necessary... I'm already subscribed lol). Totally get it if you dont though, doing a comparison of every tent you own with each other would probably take you forever.

    I think orange Cloud Up is made of polyester. A bit heavier than nylon but also thicker and maybe more durable. I have Cloud Up 1 green (polyester), newest version. Yes, it's narrow but ok for one or two nights. Polyester version has much thicker floor and can be used without groundsheet. Nylon version has only 20D nylon floor and will tear and wear without groundsheet.

    • @SummitOrNothing
      @SummitOrNothing  4 роки тому +3

      Oh, Ok. Thanks for the info. I have just had a little look into it and actually what they are saying is the orange and green are the same material - 210T Polyester, and the grey and maroon are 20D silNylon. I didn't think the floor felt much different in this one than it did in my green, but either way, I always like to use the footprint for extra durability any way. Thanks for watching!

    If its quick you're looking for, try a quecha pop up tent from Decathlon. Cheap, quick to set up, plenty of room inside and no condensation. In good weather i dont even bother pegging it out. It stands alone with no pegs but in windy conditions it would probably take off if not pegged out. A few downsides...
    1. No vestibule, but i put my dd superlight tarp up if i need coverage on an outside space.
    2. At 2.4kg, its not suitable for superlight carry.
    3. The shape when packed is disc like so wont fit in a rucksack, but can be bungeed to the outside of your rucksack or can be carried seperately as the bag for it has a carry strap.
    I have an all terrain (except mountaineering proper 😏) trolley so i love it.

      @JasperJanssen 4 роки тому

      Summit Or Nothing I assume your issue with the vents is mostly because of how terrible you put it up. That is definitely not how the foot end of the poles is supposed to look. PS: besides the too-early and way-too-tight pegging out of the vestibules, also definitely don’t clip the spreader pole in before you’ve clipped the entire main pole and then equalized the tension on that one.

    Is the cloud up 1 even with its single pole side considered free standing? Would you consider the cloud up 1 over the vik 1 in 20d since they are the same weight double wall vs single?

    thanks for posting something about the Vik 1 .... i’ve been looking at that for a while now .... be interested to see you use it for a camp should work great .... oh btw the door over the vestibule converts into a sort of awning using trekking poles .... check out the naturehike site for the details. Managed to get a local hike in with the wife (which i Vlogged shameless self plug sorry 😄) but backpacking and camping is on hold at the moment here in michigan .... itching to get out though have a great three day hike planned backpacking and fishing together should be awesome 👍👍 stay distanced, stay patient and stay healthy Trev ... atb Dave Mc

      No shame in plugging, Dave - its great that you managed to get out during this crisis. I am about thirty minutes from Dartmoor on foot, but haven't really left the house yet - I might before too long but don't want to upset people... or meet people either haha. Hi Trev! Thanks for all the comprehensive reviews on all the gear so far, really appreciate them!
    Is there any chance you could offer me some details on the physical dimensions of the packed Vik tent? I'm looking for the folded/collapsed poles length and the volume of the tent skin when lightly compressed by hand in a stuff sack. (say comparing it to a 1.5kg standard flour pack or other UK reference :D )
    Keep them coming and enjoy the summertime, looks like we're going to have a sunny season!

      @SummitOrNothing  4 роки тому

      Sorry for late reply, somehow didnt see this comment come in. The pack is roughly about 400mm x120mm x120mm if that helps at all . The poles are about 400mm, and not sure about how far this will compress down.

    Interesting. Looks like an older model of the Vik1. Mine doesn’t have the poles coming through the the skin on the air vents. I think in heavier weather those holes will be perfect for rain to stream through. Mine also came with a foot print. The vik1 is definitely not a tent for taller people. I think the second vestibule is a massive missed opportunity, they should simply have made it a larger enclosed floor space. I get my 42l backpack in with me though (I’m 1.73cm). Bring a cloth to wipe down the inside, condensation can potentially be an issue. Having said that, I have pitched mine close to the ocean and had no issues. Not a terrible little tent, could be more stealthy which would make it a Bivy alternative. I would not buy it again though. Save your money and buy good quality lightweight gear, you will eventually in any case. Gear is part of the fun of hobbies like hiking.

    • @SummitOrNothing
      @SummitOrNothing  4 роки тому +1

      Cheers for the feedback, Wynand. Its an interesting looking tent, but yes, this version does seem to have many flaws. I thought the same with the window holes, but I cannot see how the tent will breath so I reckon there will be just as much moisture inside even without the rain. And yeah, having a closed off vestibule seems a bit strange. Still, will have to get out in it and see at some point! Cheers for watching!
